About The Netherlands

The Netherlands is about 41,000 square kilome-tres in area, and has a population of around 16 million. With a rich cultural heritage, the country boasts many of history‘s most famous names in the fields of art, literature, philosophy and science. It also has a long history of inter-national trade, forging links with countries across the world from as early as 1600, bringing together new knowledge, skills, business and ideas. The warm welcome we give to the rest of the world has earned us a well-deserved reputa-tion for openness in business, as well as cultural and social life.

Holland, or The Netherlands? The country’s formal name is ‘Nederland’ (The Netherlands), meaning the ‘low country’ or the ‘lowlands’. ‘Low’ because much of the land is at or below sea level. Holland is in fact the name of the western part of the country which is the most heavily populated of all the provinces, encom-passing Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. However, Holland is also commonly (and mistakenly) used to refer to The Netherlands as a whole, including all 12 provinces that make up the country.

The south of The Netherlands borders on Belgium and Germany, with the rest of Europe within easy reach by car or the country’s excel-lent public transport system. Our multinational population presents a rich mix of different cultures, each characterised by the tolerance for which the Dutch are famous. When you study in the south of the country, you will quickly learn that we have so much more to offer than wind-mills, tulips, cheese and clogs. Of course you should take time to explore those aspects too!

Eindhoven has a youthful dynamic aura and a warm heart. By population Eindhoven is the fifth largest city in The Netherlands, with about 200,000 residents, and is the largest city in the south of The Netherlands.

The city is a trend-setting centre of innovation and technology. The claim that Eindhoven is ‘leading in technology’ is more than just a slogan. Forty per cent of all Dutch spending on research & development takes place in this region. So it’s no surprise that Eindhoven and the surrounding region is officially referred to as ‘Brainport’. But of course there are also cross-border links with the neighbouring countries. Eindhoven is a nice student town, which combines its dynamic character with a cosy atmosphere, many typical student bars and cafes and a number of interesting museums. These elements and the easy-going southern character of the people help you to feel at home in this town that makes studying a lot more appealing.

Study programme

Sinuo Li, IBMS student from China

Studying at Fontys is a fantastic experience for me. It is quite different from what I was used to. Fontys focuses on training students’ communication skills, leadership, cooperation, ability of analyzing and dealing with problems, etc. The most interesting and

important thing for me is doing business

projects in a group and learning what you

can’t learn from books! If you want to be

an entrepreneur, this is the kind of expe-

rience you need. Also, in the project group,

you make friends and learn from each other.

I totally enjoy studying at Fontys, and stu-

dying in The Netherlands.

In 2010 the International Business programme

in Eindhoven has received a special quality

award for the international features of the

programme

Educational system

Next to state of the art knowledge, a specific training programme gives you the appropriate skills to act as a professional consultant.

In semester 7 you have the opportunity to study specific topics of Management or Marketing offered at an advanced level. Another option could be to prepare for your future Master’s study by following the minor Academic Orientation

The individual graduation project is the master proof of your IBMS programme. This project will take place in semester 8. During your internship in an international company that is based in The Netherlands or abroad, you will write a final thesis on a specific assignment usually in the field of international marketing and/or manage-ment. This is your opportunity to show that you are ready to become a Bachelor of Business Administration.

Project-based learning

To enable you to do so, the school has developed a system of project-based learning, in which you carry out a number of projects dealing with different aspects of the international marketing and management practice. In groups of approxi-mately six students, you execute the tasks and assignments connected with the projects. In doing so, you learn to search and study the relevant literature, to look for the required information (desk research) and to execute field research, if necessary. By working in teams, you learn how to co-operate, how to participate in meetings, to plan activities and to execute them according to the plan. You learn to develop your leadership skills and to control the quality of the products and processes involved. Finally, you learn how to present your results to the lecturers and/or companies. In addition to the projects you are trained in specific skills. The skills training focuses on improving business communication skills, professional skills and management skills.

Dinara SadvakassovaIBMS student from Kazakhstan

I did not regret studying IBMS for one

minute. I have changed my attitudes, gained

priceless experiences and I improved skills like

communication and problem solving. I have

learned a lot about the business environment,

about how to work in projects with a group

of people, how to organise, and how to

implement knowledge in real life. The lectures

are very motivating. After my education, I

want to start my own business in Kazakhstan.
