PREPARATION:This piece is MDF wood so I have not sealed it, I just basecoated it with Burlap. Repeat as needed. Spat-ter with Light Buttermilk. Add designs using stencils, stamps, or objects you have on hand. It’s mostly for background interest so don’t get bogged down with perfection. Use Light Buttermilk. When dry, trace your pattern on. Basecoat the ice skate and candy canes Warm White. Repeat for good coverage.

ICE SKATE:Start your shading with Dove Grey (thin). Float some of your shading areas with Colonial Blue (thin). I always say thin to start with because you can add more. Taking away for me means I have to basecoat again and start over. Build your shading, and also highlights. Float the eyelets in with Dove Grey and then Asphaltum (thin). The outside outline is Dove Grey with a small amount of Asphaltum added to it. The outline closest to the shoe lace is just Asphaltum. At this stage, you will probably need to basecoat the shoe laces back in. Shade with Dove Grey and also thin Asphaltum for more contrast. The end of the shoe lace is Dove Grey, shaded Asphaltum, and high-lighted Warm White. The sole to the ice skate is Sable Brown, shaded Asphaltum.

BLADE:This is basecoated Warm White, shaded Grey Sky. The darker shading on the inner edge is Slate Grey.

Hint:Using your Glaze Wash brush sideloaded in Tradi-tional Burnt Umber, fl oat shading around the ice skate and candy canes. Repeat if needed but start with thin fl oating fi rst. Bring this out into the background about an inch and a half. Repeat this until you are happy with it because the next step on the background will be the gumdrops and stroke leaves.

CANDY CANES:These have already been basecoated Warm white. The red stripes are Santa Red. Repeat. The leaves on the plain candy canes are Foliage Green, shaded Plantation Pine. The stems are Plantation Pine. The eyes on the faces are a sideloaded fl oat fi rst using

Dark Chocolate. Without cleaning your brush, pick up Lamp Black and fl oat over the Dark Chocolate not covering it completely. Add a Warm white highlight dot to each. The cheeks are fl oated in fi rst with Poodleskirt Pink. The smile line is Boysenberry Pink. Float a stron-ger pink on their cheeks by adding Boysenberry Pink to Poodleskirt Pink. This color is for their lower lip and the two that have little oval noses. The snowman’s nose is Burnt Orange. Float Uniform Blue (thin) on one side of the candy canes. Float Cranberry Wine over the broad red bands to bring back the red to them. The thin lines and dots on the candy canes are Santa Red. Add a Warm White highlight line on the canes that are red and white.

RED GUMDROPS:I like to use a small fl at brush and load one side or just the corner in paint and tap my colors in. Start with Cot-ton Candy on the highlight side. As you move to the darker side, begin picking up Santa Red and fi nish. Tap these colors back and forth to get a variation of colors. Pick up Warm White and add some extra highlights to the highlight area. If you need more contrast on the shaded areas add a little Cranberry Wine to Santa Red.

GREEN GUMDROP:Start your gumdrop with Leaf Green, picking up Pista-chio Mint for the highlight area. Work back and forth for a variation of color. Add Warm White to the high-light area. Pick up Leaf Green plus a small amount of Hauser Dark Green and add some shading.

GREENS:Dirty brush the stroke leaves using Foliage Green, Hauser Medium Green, and Plantation Pine.

DETAIL:Add Warm White snowfl akes, and scuff some snow under the blade of the skate. Use Grey Sky and Warm White for the snow.

DETAIL:Float Traditional Burnt Umber (thin) around the outside of the jar. Use your Glaze Wash brush. When dry, fl oat Antique Maroon in a few places for extra color. Very carefully dry brush Light Buttermilk inside this shading to resemble a hint of a jar.

LID:Basecoat Antique Maroon. Dry brush the center area Burnt Sienna and then Terra Cotta. Float Lamp Black to form the creases in the lid.

FINISH:Spray varnish several times, allowing to dry in between sprays.
