On Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013 at 7:16 a.m. detectives from the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office were asked to assist the Superior Police Department with a shooting investigation. Detectives responded to Superior and met with their officers for a briefing. The detectives were told, the 40-year-old male victim had been severely beaten and had a single gunshot wound to his neck. The victim was transported to a level one trauma hospital in Phoenix. The victim immediately had to go in to surgery for the gunshot wound. The victim’s truck was also found burned in the desert several miles away. PCSO Detectives were able to learn through interviews,

the shooting victim was also the victim of a robbery several days prior. Detectives learned after the robbery, the victim was warned by the suspects involved he needed to leave town. On Oct. 26 shortly before 3 a.m., two females showed up at the victim’s residence and offered to sell him methamphetamines. The victim left his residence in the 1700 block of S. Quail Dr. in Superior with the two females. The victim drove his truck with the individuals to a location in Superior. Once at the location, the victim was shot in the neck and later beaten by several of the suspects who had previously robbed him. After being beaten and shot, the suspects stole the victim’s vehicle. The victim walked home and a friend called 9-1-1. FLORENCE, AZ (11/7/13) – On Monday, a trial date of January 6, 2014 was set for Antonio Ramirez, a 39-year-old Superior man, accused of making threats against Kennedy Elementary and Superior Junior/Senior High School employees. On May 10, law enforcement apprehended Ramirez after Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles filed a Direct Complaint and Petition for Arrest Warrant against him. The

Pinal County Attorney’s Probable Cause statement alleges that on November 17, 2011, Ramirez left a voice mail message at Kennedy Elementary School threatening to burn them and that on April 24, 2013, he made a threat against a school employee stating he would blow her up, everyone at her residence, and both Kennedy Elementary and Superior Junior/Senior High Schools. Due to the nature of the threats, normal

operation of the school was disrupted. According to the Petition for Arrest warrant and the County Attorney’s Complaint, Ramirez faces three - class 6 felony counts for the alleged incidents and is being held on a $100,000 cash bond. Specifically, he is accused of two counts of interfering with the peaceful conduct of an educational institution and one count of interfering with an educational

institution. Ramirez is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. “Removing violent offenders from our streets and seeking justice remain my top priorities. I continue to work proactively with law enforcement to create safer communities and if even the threat of violence exists, I assure my full commitment to removing that threat,” stated Pinal County Attorney Voyles.

By Nina CrowderSuperior Sun After months of consideration, the Superior Council last week narrowly voted to end nego-tiations with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office for police coverage for the town. Instead the town will now seek to hire a new chief of police to head the small town department. Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu was in at-tendance and spoke to the council following the vote. “We would be happy to support you in the process of a selection committee and have a committee advise the council about who it will be to rebuild your police department,” he said. He urged them to advertise immediately for a new chief. PCSO, he said, had assigned Sgt. Pat Ramirez to Superior to act in the capacity of chief. “Pat Ramirez will immediately report back to the Sheriff’s Office and we will con-tinue support in ways that we can,” he added. “But this is your responsibility and I appreci-ate the fact that you finally made a decision.” Councilwoman Mila Besich Lira, who made the motion, thanked Ramirez and the Sheriff’s Office for their support during the time of transition. “One of my reasonings,” Besich Lira said, “was I don’t think our residency should be

taxed twice because we are paying for prop-erty taxes to fund the Sheriff’s Office and we would be paying for your services twice. That is one of the major reasons I voted for this. I really appreciate what you have done and I think this will help us in making decisions in finding a Chief of Police that will take us to the level we need to be at.” Councilman Gilbert Aguilar, who voted against the motion, said, “I really hope all of you are happy. You know we have a gang problem here and you people don’t see it. There are problems here. We continue to have problems, but it’s fine. When they break into your place or they hurt you, don’t cry.” Aguilar walked out of the meeting after his comment. Councilman Michael Alonzo commented that the townspeople need to be proactive and help the town solve its crime problem. He suggest-ed community watch programs and helping the town make a stand. Sgt. Ramirez told the council that it has a way to go to bring the department up to modern standards and spoke at length about a recent shooting and countless crimes that go unreported because victims are afraid. Besides officers, he said, there is a need for equipment, vehicles, dispatchers, training, digital cameras,

Superior Council ends negotiations with the sheriff, will seek new chief of police

digital recorders, scanners, policy/procedures need to be updated and many countless other items. Alonzo, Besich Lira, Vice Mayor Olga Lopez and Councilman Steve Estatico voted in favor of ending negotiations. Mayor Jayme Valen-zuela, Aguilar and Councilman John Tameron

voted against the motion. The next regular meeting of the Superior Town Council will be held Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Superior Senior Center. Mayor Valenzuela and the Town Council Members encourage members of the commu-nity to attend.

Superior - Another month of school has gone by and the children are progressing daily. As their minds become filled with new information, through the many books and fun activities completed, they show progress in expressive language, conver-sation and personal growth.

Most recently, the children participated in a “Silly Dress Up Day” walking field trip. Many of the children wore their costumes. It was also their first “Father-hood Activity.” The children bonded with their fathers, building upon their ongoing relationship with their father, male/female

role models in their family. The children were escorted by their “fathers” along with staff and volunteers to the Superior Senior Citizen’s Center. The children sang finger play songs, read “The Nightmare In My Closet” story book and paraded in their costumes while interacting with the

Senior Citizens. The children also participated in photo event with their father, or family member attending. At the end of their walking field trip, the children relaxed on the circle time carpet in costume, while reflecting on the day’s events.

The VFW Post in Superior hosted their annual Veterans Day ceremony and luncheon on Monday. The annual event included the remem-brance of the veterans from Superior who died in ser-vice, the presentation of the wreaths and also the POW/MIA table. Commander Art Reyna

opened the ceremony and introduced Mike Urquijo who remained as the Master of Ceremonies. Urquijo thanked all of the mem-bers for assisting with the event and introduced the three guest speakers that were chosen for the event. Guest speakers were Mila Besich Lira, Superior Town

VFW celebrates Veterans DayCouncilmember, Patrick O’Donnell, Superintendent, Superior Unified School District, and Chris Naggy with the Superior Fire De-partment. Besich Lira spoke about the sacrifices made by the service members and their families. She spoke of how in a moment’s notice a service members life can change. O’Donnell spoke of how hard it often is to work away from those we love, but it is often the right thing to do. Naggy spoke of vol-unteerism and how the VFW has been instrumental in fighting for veterans. Naggy encouraged everyone to continue to volunteer in their community. He spoke of war times when volunteers were necessary for the success of the battle. Frank Rabago sang the Star Spangled Banner and to end the ceremony he sang Wind Beneath My Wings. Between the song and the heartwarm-ing speeches there was not a dry eye in the room. Every-one in attendance took time to remember those who have served and continue to serve. Following the ceremony the VFW Ladies Auxiliary prepared a pot luck lunch for the veterans and guest of the ceremony.

By Andrew LuberdaSuperior Sun The Panthers’ girls’ basketball team will return four starters from last year’s team after losing only two seniors. According to head coach Manuel Ortega, seniors Kiara Romero and Mariza Padilla, junior Cierra Navarrette and sophomore Gabby Salcido

are the returning starters. Ortega said he expects all the players on the team to contribute and believes the depth on the team will provide an opportunity for success. He detailed some other keys for achieving success this season in an email to the Superior Sun. “(We need) to build chemistry with each

play as a team to make every (player) better. We have to work hard and become a very tight knit group. We have to look for each other and develop a good bond.” The players on the team will be held accountable on and off the court, according to Coach Ortega. He expects his players “to be respectful, hard-working, responsible,

and present themselves with class and dignity.” Ortega said the roster in not finalized at this time but hopes to announce the team later this week. The Panthers open their season on November 26, 2013 versus Globe at Superior High School. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Pastor’s CornerBy Rev. Dennis Van Gorp Family Life Christian Center Mary, in her song of worship and thanksgiving (Luke 1:47,48) says: “My God is mindful of the humble state of His servant.” The Scriptures tell us that God is everywhere pres-ent, He sees everything and knows everything. God sees each one of us, everyday – 24/7! He knows what our minds think and what we sense, feel and know in our heart. He understands us completely, better than we know ourselves. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that Jesus was tempted in every way, just as we are – but without sinning. Sometimes, we say that no one understands what we are going through or experienc-ing. But Jesus does, so we can take all our problems to Him. None of life’s problems are beyond His grace and under-standing. His love is so great, that He always wants to help us in our daily difficulties. As Mary said, God knows what you are going through. Pray and ask for His help to get you through the current storm or situation that you find yourself in. He always hears and answers our prayers. Don’t forget to say ‘thank you’ when He steps in to help. You will have made your life easier by trust-ing in the Lord.

For the last seven years Superior Fire Department has committed itself to making sure that every child in Superior has a toy for Christmas. The department needs your help to make sure the tradition can continue. Santa will drive around town for six hours, stopping every time a child comes out to greet him. Every child that comes out to see Santa receives a toy. The Fire Truck that carries Santa is outfitted with over 5,000 Christmas lights and a snow machine. Your donation of $2-$5 toys, gift card, or check will ensure that no child who comes out to see Santa will be disappointed. Larger toys will be distributed through the Angel Tree program. The difficult economy has made your support even more important. You can drop donations at the Superior Fire Department, or mail them to: Superior Fire Department, 236 Golf Course Rd., Superior, AZ 85173 The Superior Firefighters would like to give a heart felt thank you to everyone who donated last year. None of this would be possible without your continued support.
