ParkingThe Conservatory admission desk validates tickets for free parking in the Civic Center Parking Garage across from our entrance at Jefferson and Calhoun St. Metered parking is available on nearby streets; it is free on evenings and weekends. Bus and hand-icap accessible parking is available in the Conser-vatory’s Calhoun Street driveway.

Extended Holiday HoursNovember 22 - December 21The Conservatory will stay open until 8:00 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday evenings for five weeks, from Thanksgiving through the week before Christmas. Enjoy an extra evening downtown to visit the botanical gardens done up in lights for the holidays. The gift shop will also be open until 8:00 p.m. The Conservatory will continue Thurs-day evening hours after Christmas.

Gift Shop Extend your garden visit or shop without visiting the gardens! The Conservatory gift shop offers an array of unique and educational toys, clothing, books, plants, home décor, and garden accesso-ries perfect for home, souvenir, or gift-giving. We have new items arriving specifically with holiday decorating and gifting in mind. The gift shop is open during public hours Tuesday through Sun-day; Conservatory admission is not required.

Conservatory MembershipsConservatory memberships make great gifts in a holiday card or as a stocking stuffer. Memberships allow free admission anytime during public hours, including special events, and are valid for a year from the date of purchase. In addition, members receive a 10% discount in the Conservatory Gift Shop and Sales Garden as well as reciprocal ben-efits at 325 other gardens around the country. Individual membership $35; Family or Grand-parents membership $50. You may also consider our Add-a-Guest option ($15) which allows you to bring any other person with you whenever you visit. Holiday Kick-Off PartyWednesday, November 21, 5:00-9:00 p.m.Enjoy hot chocolate and a cookie, meet Mrs. Claus, and get a free professional-quality photo with Santa. You can also meet two live reindeer that know all about the North Pole. This year the Fort Wayne Youtheatre will be performing Christmas carols during the first hour of the event. The gar-dens are decorated for the holidays, and you won’t want to miss the animated light show outdoors. Be sure to participate in the Fort Wayne Downtown Lighting Ceremony either before or after your visit to our beautiful holiday garden and displays. Garden in LightsNovember 21-January 6We’ve decorated all through the gardens, indoors and out. Enjoy beautiful poinsettias in the Victo-rian Christmas garden, ornaments and lights in the Tropical and Desert Houses, and an illuminated outdoor display of lights and synchronized holi-day music. Especially effective during our evening hours on Thursday and Friday nights for five weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the gardens are lovely throughout the holidays and provide a tremendous backdrop for family photos, special outings, and guest entertainment. Make the most of your visit as you enjoy Fort Wayne’s treasured public garden. Our gift shop will also be open during public hours for holiday shopping. Spon-sored by PBS 39 and Majic 95.1 FM.

“Victorian Holiday” Christmas ExhibitNovember 20-January 6

Botanical Conservatory, 1100 S. Calhoun St. The holiday season is replete with tradition. This year, the Conservatory is drawing on the old-fashioned sensibilities of the Victorian era. A 12-foot-tall poinsettia tree takes center stage in our village plaza lined with shops. Peek into store windows. Take photos in a parlor decorated with greens and handcrafted ornaments. Explore the customs that brought this holiday to life for families at the turn of the last century. A display of vintage postcard images will help to capture the sentiments of yesteryear. Victorian era arti-facts will be on loan from The History Center. This exhibit is sponsored by the Auer Foundation, WAJI Majic 95.1 and PBS39.

Carolers at the ConservatoryThursday, December 6, 6:00-7:00 p.m.As a tradition, on the first Thursday in the month of December, we are happy to provide music to get you in the spirit of the holidays for only $1. This year we are pleased to have an exceptional quartet of vocal artists caroling in our ‘Victorian Holiday’ themed showcase garden from Purdue University Fort Wayne School of Music. They will break mid-way through the hour and then pick back up with more era appropriate favorites. Join us a for an extraordinary experience you won’t want to miss!

Suzuki Strings Holiday ConcertSunday, December 16, 2:00-2:45 p.m.Visit the Conservatory gardens and enjoy this spe-cial concert offered by the accomplished students of Fort Wayne Suzuki. Children ages 4 to 18 will play folk songs, classical melodies, and holiday favorites on violin and cello. The Suzuki Method of instruction, also known as the “mother tongue method,” is based on the premise that music is learned like a language: children first hear the music and then learn to read and write it. Children develop the ability to “speak” music like a language and are able to play dozens of songs by memory. You can hear for yourself the results as local Suzuki students play music with holiday ear appeal. Con-cert is included with regular Conservatory admis-sion. Breakfast with Santa!Saturday, December 1, 9:00-10:00 am Yes, Santa eats break-fast and you can join him! Sign up for a special VIP breakfast before he makes his final list of who has been naughty and nice. Breakfast will include pancakes, sausages, eggs and fresh fruit, milk or juice for the kids and coffee for the adults. There will be children’s activities and time allotted to take pictures of your little ones in our “Victorian Holiday” exhibit before we open to the public. Holiday Decorating

Decorate a Gingerbread HouseCelebrate the beginning of the Christmas season by decorating your very own gingerbread dream house. Roll up your sleeves and dive into creat-ing your own masterpiece for all your family to admire! You will be given a pre-assembled ginger-bread house, icing and an assortment of candy. A cardboard flat will be provided to take home your decorated house. This class is for children 6 years and older, teens and adults. Paint a Poinsettia Feeling like you want to paint something, but not wanting to take on a huge project, then we have just the craft for you. Join homemaker Vicki Hoffman as she walks you through the process of creating a beautiful ornament to hang on your tree. Learn the techniques of shading and adding color to enhance your festive flower. “Hundred Acre Wood” Winter ExhibitJanuary 12-April 21This winter, come in from the cold to discover the enchanting world of Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends. You’ll find Eeyore, Rabbit, Piglet and Pooh Bear have made their homes quite comfortably in the Botanical Conservatory’s Showcase Garden. You can relive or be intro-duced to the imaginative stories of A.A. Milne from his books Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner as you play in our version of the Hundred Acre Wood. But watch out for Heffalumps! Hands-on learning stations in the Discovery Gallery help you explore how this literature connects to everyday life. Sponsored by Fun 101.7 and Majic 95.1 FM.

Pooh Day Saturday, February 9, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.Go on your own “expotition” in the enchanted land of the Hundred Acre Wood at the Botanical Conservatory during our winter “Pooh Day” event! You can take part in activities, win at games, and make crafts, all inspired by A. A. Milne’s residents of the Hundred Acre Wood. Make your own Tigger, Winnie-the-Pooh, or Eeyore to take home! Find the Heffalump, jump like Kanga and Roo in the obstacle course, or test your knowledge of the Wood’s inhabi-tants in our scavenger hunt! You can even take home a character balloon crafted by a local balloon artist. You’ll expend some energy in our exhibit bouncing like Tigger and practicing your exercises, too. The Great Train ConnectionSaturday, February 23, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Sunday, February 24, 12:00-4:00 p.m.At the turn of the 20th century, Fort Wayne was a major railroad town, connected to every major city by rail. Climb aboard this weekend to get a good look at local railroad history and enjoy the thrill of model trains. Throughout this two-day event, model railroad clubs will run their G-scale, HO gauge, and N gauge trains in tabletop displays, while history buffs share their stories and explain the artifacts they have carefully accumulated and preserved. You’ll also hear about the historical reclamation of one of the last surviving steam engines in the world, the 765. Get connected to Fort Wayne through its history! Garden Close-Up: Tiny Pines!Saturday, February 23, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.Tired of the “winter blahs”? Then come explore the Hundred Acre Wood at the Botanical Con-servatory to brighten your day! During our Great Train Connection on February 23 we’ll consider Pooh Bear’s Six Pine Trees, where he and Piglet chased a Woozle. Test your knowledge of pines, spruces, and firs and learn to make your own model “pine” tree. When you visit the Botanical Conservatory on the fourth Saturday, you always get a closer look at our gardens with an explor-atory walk, hands-on activity or demonstration. We highlight a different garden each month so you can make new discoveries through fun, educational activities. Included in your regular Conservatory admission, so drop in!

Sweetheart Orchid DisplayFebruary 5-24 Public hours: Tues-Sat 10 am-5-pm, Sun 12-4, Thurs ‘til 8 pmMake a date for the Botanical Conservatory and bring your sweetie down in February to enjoy our Hundred Acre Wood exhibit, lovely indoor gardens, and a special display of orchids. Take a moment with camera or cell phone to capture a photo of your darling under the orchid arbor planted with a cascade of striking Cattleyas, fra-grant Dendrobiums, dainty Oncidiums, and moth-like Phalaenopsis against a backdrop of a lush Tropical Garden. Couple’s Forest Bathing Walk (Shinrin-Yoku)In honor of Valentine’s Day, the Conservatory is offering a ‘Couple’s Walk’, that is, a couple’s “forest bathing” walk. Take this Saturday morning to rediscover your inner child and your connec-tion with the natural world and each other. Shin-rin-Yoku, or forest bathing, is the experience of immersing oneself in the sensory gifts of nature. This can be done in a forest setting, gardens and parks. The benefits are not only a greater sense of well-being, but a boost in immune function and ready access to lower stress hormones and boosts in serotonin levels. Being relaxed, revitalized, and better equipped to handle the stresses of daily living are the goals of this forest bathing walk. Instructor Christy Thomson is a life-long resident of northeast IN. $1 Night Insight: Send a CardThursday, February 7, 6:00-7:00 p.m.Did you know the first recorded handwritten letter was from the Persian Queen Atossa around 500 BC? That the stamped letter we know today came into being during the reign of Queen Victoria in 1840? Join us at the Conservatory to learn more about the history of sending things and take a min-ute to decorate a card for a friend in honor of National Send a Card to a Friend Day. You bring the address and we will provide the stamp!

Sweetheart SachetBring a girl friend to make a craft and take your mind off these dark, cold days of winter. The Con-servatory is offering a morning workshop where you create your own sweetheart sachet. Plant & Go: WinterShowcase Exhibit Opening DayJanuary 12, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.Calling all gardeners and gardeners-to-be! Visit the Botanical Conservatory on the first day of each new Showcase Garden exhibit to participate in a hands-on learning experience with plants. This month we’re giving out an acorn, seed of the English oak tree. As you may know, Piglet’s favorite food is “haycorns” so we can each plant one so we’ll have plenty to share. Plant & Go will feature four different plants every year, coinciding with the start of each seasonal garden exhibit: Jan-uary, April, July, and November. Pot up a seedling, plantlet, seed, or bulb, learn care instructions and fun plant facts, and take your new plant baby home to nurture. (While supplies last.) Included in regu-lar Conservatory admission, so drop in!

Roddy Dammeyer: Art Exhibit of TravelingOil Paintings November-DecemberPublic Reception: November 4, 1:00-3:00 p.m.Roddy (Rodka) Dammeyer feels as though she was born with a paintbrush in her hand. A native of Fort Wayne, Roddy inherited her love for art from her father, a commercial artist who went on to creating fine art after retirement. While Roddy did not become fully invested in art until her retirement, she did take art classes through high school and college. Currently she is involved with the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Fort Wayne Art League, Fort Wayne Artists Guild, the Artlink of Fort Wayne, Charlevoix Circle of Arts, Boyne Arts Collective, the Freshwater Gallery, and Jordan River Arts Council. She prefers oil painting but has worked in a plethora of artistic media. Roddy loves the texture of oils and gets most of her inspiration from nature. She does some work in studios, but prefers to paint en plein aire.

Terrible Orchestra Get the violin you played in high school out of the attic and come join the fun! We are starting an “orchestra” for adults (2+ years of experience is preferred) that just want to have fun making music. Music arrangements will be provided to get the musical muscles active again. Beginning PotteryPottery is one of the most ancient arts. Excava-tions in the Near East have revealed that primi-tive fired-clay vessels were made there more than 8,000 years ago. You will learn both hand building and wheel throwing techniques, how to prepare clay, select a design, and various glazing tech-niques. Every student will create six unique pieces to take home (a cylinder, vase and bowl by wheel and a coiled creamer, slabbed box and your own creation by hand). Return of the Rag Rug Rag rug making is just one of many “forgotten skills of self-sufficiency” used by pioneers on the frontier. And, like many others, it has returned more as a hobby or craft, than a necessity. The rag rug is made from long strips of fabric that are braided, coiled and sewn into a flat spiral. They can be solid color, multi-colored, circular, square, left with ragged edges or seamed for a neater fin-ish. They are a great way to use fabric scraps and, as the pioneers can attest, they make great rugs. For a denim rug you will need to bring 5 pairs of worn out jeans. For the rag rug, you will need to bring old clothes, sheets or long scraps of fabric. Also, please bring to class, if you can: a portable sewing machine, thread, scissors, a seam ripper, a quilting mat, a quilting acrylic ruler and a rotary cutter. Birdwatching on Our Urban RiversSundays, December 9, January 13, February 102:00-3:00 p.m.Lawton Park Trailhead, Clinton and 4th StreetsWinter is a great time of year for beginning birders to start in this fascinating and rewarding hobby! Our urban rivers feature a huge variety of bird species (even bald eagles!) and provide fantastic vantage points—you’ll be an avid birder before long! We will continue our partnership with Cor-nell University Ornithology Lab, tracking and col-lecting data on urban birds, and sharing our new found knowledge with them. This guided urban hike is open to all ages and experience levels. We’ll share birding tricks and trips, as you enjoy the diverse bird life along our rivers- and maybe spot some winter migrators while we’re out! We will spend the first few minutes of each program learning some basics about birdwatching and how to use binoculars (we have a few pairs of binoculars and bird guides to share if you don’t have your own). Each participant will receive a Riverfront life list. This program is free and no pre-registration is necessary. Terrible Orchestra Get the violin you played in high school out of the attic and come join the fun! We are starting an “orchestra” for adults (2+ years of experience is preferred) that just want to have fun making music. Music arrangements will be provided to get the musical muscles active again. Modeled after the Scottish Really Terrible Orchestra, a group of friends who just wanted to get together and play, this class will have some instruction as well as “rehearsal” time as a group. Nouvelle Annee: A French Garrison 1759Saturday, January 26, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.Experience a winter with the French of Fort Miamis. Re-enactors from “Les Habitants et Marines du Post ed Miamis” will spend the weekend living in the Fort, which will be open for visitors on Satur-day. Their goal is to recreate actual events which occurred in and around what is now Fort Wayne in the year 1757. They do so by examining let-ters written by the French commanders of what was then known as Fort Miamis and then attempt to recreate those events. Mail call, military drills, scouting, cooking and sewing will be some of the events taking place during the event.

1812 Winter Garrison Saturday, February 23, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.A winter posting at a frontier Fort was never an easy task. Soldiers had to chop wood to stay warm and cook their own meals. Natives were always around in 1812 and many could not be trusted to be friendly. Visit with the soldiers and feel what it was like to live in a frontier Fort during the winter.

Refund PolicyRefunds will be processed upon request for pavilion reservations, recreation classes, leagues, and other programs in accordance with the following policy:

1. Full refunds will be made upon cancellation of a class or activity by the Parks and Rec-reation Department.

2. Full refunds less a processing and handling fee of $5 or 10% (whichever is greater) will be granted to individuals and/or teams if requested one business day before the program begins.

3. Refunds requested less than one business day prior to the beginning of a program or activity may be granted only for illness or medical reasons. These refunds will be pro-rated and issued in the form of a credit to your account with us, which may then be applied to a future purchase.

4. The outdoor wedding fee is not refund-able; however, the event may be resched-uled within 364 days for a charge of 20% of the rental fee.

5. Refunds for cancelled pavilion reservations shall be granted as follows:

• 6 or more months notice - Refund minus deposit or transfer with a $5 or 10% (whichever is greater) processing fee.• 3-5 months notice - Refund minus deposit and 20% processing fee or transfer with a 20% processing fee• 1-2 months notice - No refund.
