Functional skills are those core elements of English, maths and ICT that provide individuals with the essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life and at work.

GCSE and functional skills

• The new GCSE criteria do not feature a structural change to the qualifications, and therefore will not require that learners pass level 2 functional skills assessments before they can achieve

grades A* - C

• New GCSE specifications will require learners to demonstrate functionality as part of their GCSE

• New school report card is likely include a requirement to report on FS

• It is still strongly recommended that all learners in schools take the functional skills qualifications
