1. Living part of the nail structure. Sometimes referred to as the root of the nail. Nourished by a large supply of blood vessels. New cells divide to produce the nail.

2. Visible part of the nail and made up of hundreds of layers. Attached to the finger by the nail bed. It is dead and has no nerves or blood supply.

3. Part of the nail that extends beyond the finger tip. Can be filed into shape.

4. Lies at the edge of the nail bed and just beneath the free edge. It has a seal that protects the nail from infection.

5. Lies underneath the nail plate. Has a series of ridges and grooves.

6. The visible part of the matrix. The very pale pink area at the

base of the nail. Mainly only visible on the thumbs.

7. Formed from thickened stratum corneum. Has two parts: the

eponychium and the perionychium.
