Language and Word Study• Focus: Develop children’s

language and word study knowledge and skills. Students explore intricacies of language across the genres. Investigate meaning and structure of words and the conventions and forms of written language.

• 20% of the ELA Block K-3 (120 minute minimum, 90 of these minutes are uniterrupted )

• Integrated into the ELA Block 4-5 (minimum of 90 uninterrupted minutes)

• Early Literacy Concepts - very early understandings related to how written language or print is organized and used- how it works

• Phonological Awareness - awareness of words, rhyming words, onsets and rimes, syllables, and individual sounds

• Letter Knowledge - ability to recognize and label the graphic symbols of language

• Letter Sound Relationships - recognizing the corresponding sound if a specific letter when that letter is seen or heard

• Spelling Patterns• High Frequency Words• Word Meaning and Vocabulary• Word Structure• Word Solving Actions - to use a

range of strategies to take words apart and understand their meaning
