OVERVIEWThis course will introduce and provide non-technical people with the basics of a substation and all the general components that are inside a substation. General issues that are involved in the construction, operation and maintenance of substations and switchyards, and detailed safety awareness will be discussed. It will allow people who are not substation design engineers to know enough to oversee various aspects of a substation and will allow strong oversight of contractors and various substation projects.

LEARNING OUTCOMES• Explore the electric utility system reviewing the components and their function• Review the different types of substations and their applications• List the components of a substation discussing their purpose and function• Discuss examples of non-substation equipment and their use and relationship to stations• Review the most common causes of and remedies for substation faults• Discuss substation hazards and safety practices• Acquire an understanding of the different types of substation drawings and diagrams

WHO SHOULD ATTEND• Maintenance and operations staff• Transmission and distribution contractors• Engineering and design consultants• Non-electrical engineers• Transmission and distribution operators
