Foundation Giving Hits Record £3.3bn in Fourth Year of Growth Foundation giving reached £3.3bn in the last financial year, according to new research published by the Association of Charitable Foundations (ACF). The figures for 2016/17 represent a 10.9% increase on last year’s record. Assets also reached a new high of £65bn while income hit £3.7bn. The findings come from Foundation Giving Trends 2018, the latest edition of the annual report on the finances and funding of the top 300 UK independent charitable foundations by grant-making. 63% of foundations increased their grant-making in real terms in 2016/17 on the back of growth in income and/or assets. Income from donations and investments both grew by around 10%, while average asset growth of 5% shrank to 2.5% after excluding the giant Wellcome Trust. The report also details trends among family foundations and corporate foundations. Family foundation giving totalled more than £2bn, while corporate foundation giving shrank slightly this year to £228m.

#iwillWeek 2018 #iwillWeek runs from 12th to 16th November to further empower and celebrate the stories of young people, by enabling them to describe the impact they’re having on communities and causes they care so much about. #iwillWeek 2018 provides the space and forum for young people to tell stories of youth social action. Find out how to get involved here. What engaging in #iwillWeek 2018 can look like 1. Share a blog or let young people take over your social media: Young people can

be invited to author a piece of content, ideally articulating their own impact or the impact of youth social action on the community. This could be a news story with local media interest, a website post, a blog or even a letter to a local MP or community leader. Or hand over your newsletter or social media channels to young people during the week

Page 8: Funding News is produced by East Sussex County Council · reports on how the arts, libraries and museums sector have developed since 2010. Find out more. East Sussex County Council

8

2. Produce a film: Create a film – short or long – with young people talking about the positive impact they have had on their communities. They could also be invited shoot, storyboard or even direct the films. Armed with smartphones this could be a relatively swift way to get multiple perspectives and could enhance written content – new or old

3. Host an event: Hosting an event may also be a choice you make. Inviting young

people to lead the event as well as share their stories can really elevate the impact of youth social action. Perhaps it also makes sense to invite the wider community, your local MP or other community leaders to learn about the role young people have taken on through their volunteering, fundraising or campaigning. Or you may be interested in holding a Big Lunch to start conversations about the difference young people can make in improving their communities.

#iwillWeek is adding resources to help you take part. Meantime, if you have any queries or suggestions regarding #iwillWeek 2018 they’d love to hear from you – get in touch with them by email and they encourage people to sign up to their Newsletter Email: [email protected]

The Home Office has been working closely with voluntary and community organisations across the UK representing the needs of potentially vulnerable EU citizens. The grant will help these organisations to both inform vulnerable individuals about the need to apply for settled status and support them to complete their applications to protect their status as the UK exits the EU. The Home Office recently announced the next phase of the rollout of the EU Settlement Scheme. From 15th November to 21st December 2018 the private test phase will be extended to include vulnerable people with additional support needs with the involvement of a small number of local authorities and community organisations. The scheme will be fully open by March 2019. Information on the new fund will be published as soon as it is available.

Providing funding for projects that prevent hate crime is one of the actions included in the UK Government’s hate crime action plan. Grants of £75,000 are now available for projects that commence from 1st April 2019 and are completed by 31st March 2020. They expect to fund eight motivated and creative community groups to develop innovative programmes that help to prevent hate crime and issues associated with it. Hate crimes are crimes that are motivated by hostility on the grounds of race (including colour, nationality and citizenship, religion, ethnicity and national origin), disability, sexual orientation and transgender identity. The aim of the fund is to work with affected communities to fund the development of projects that:

Preventing hate crime – by challenging the beliefs and attitudes that can underline such crimes

Responding to hate crime in communities – reducing the number of hate crime incidents

Increasing the reporting of hate crime – while there has been an increase in all recorded hate crime, hate crime is still significantly under-reported

Improving support for the victims of hate crime – this is crucial for increasing victims’ confidence to report incidents and enabling them to feel confident that the criminal justice system understands their needs

Building understanding of hate crime – if the drivers of hate crime are understood, all forms of hate crime can be effectively combatted.

The funding can be used for the following revenue costs:

Salaries of project workers, including any extra costs such as pensions, National Insurance and redundancy costs, if applicable, for the project

Salaries of management staff who only supervise project staff, including any extra costs such as pensions and National Insurance for the project

Recruitment of staff who will work on the project

Expenses of project staff and volunteers, including; travel, accommodation, phone bills and stationery

Rent, heating, lighting, maintenance and insurance for office space and buildings only used for this.

The deadline for applications is 7th December 2018 (23:59). Email: [email protected]
