conquer lupus Welcome to the 12th Annual

Walk for Lupus Campaign

Lupus Lupus is a chronic disease with a variety of symptoms caused by inflammation in one or more parts of the body. It is estimated that it affects over 1:1000 Ca-nadian men, women and children. Lupus is not contagious and is not related to AIDS or cancer. It belongs in the family of diseases that includes rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, juvenile diabetes, and scleroderma. The most common type of lupus is SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus). It is a complex and baffling condition that can target any tissue or organ of the body, including skin, muscles, joints, blood and blood vessels, lungs, heart, kidneys, and the brain.

Thank you for participating in the 2013 Walk for Lupus. Not only will you be helping the over 1:1000 Canadian men, women and children living with lupus you will also be helping bring the much needed awareness to the cause. Every time you speak to someone about your involvement another person is better informed about Lupus. This Guide gives you some helpful hints for a successful fundraising Campaign. Lupus Canada in partnership with its Member Offices and Divisions thank you for taking a step to help conquer lupus!taking a step to help conquer lupus!taking a step to help conquer lupus!taking a step to help conquer lupus! Please do not hesitate to contact your Member Organization for further information. The contact information is listed at the back of this Guide.

Try it in the Dark! Why not organize your Walk to take place in the early evening? Photosensitivity, or increased sensitivity to sunlight, is common among people who have systemic lupus erythematosus, or lupus. Sun exposure can cause rashes (including the “butterfly” or malar rash) and lesions or trigger flare-ups of the disease that could affect internal organs. As many as three-quarters of people with lupus are photosensitive. As those living with lupus may find taking part in a walk during the peak sunlight hours difficult, a night walk allows them to participate free from the exposure of the harmful sun rays. Should you wish to organize a night walk please contact Lupus Canada or your local Member Organization. We’d love to share ideas on how you can make your Walk an exciting and fun evening to remember. Think glow sticks and flashlights!!

People can also donate directly online and receive their electronic tax receipt immediately. You can also use this as a way to thank your donors and let them know how the walk went.

After Registering online—Start Fundraising • Set a Goal, track it and share it • Pledge yourself first—be committed—start early • Write or call family members and close friends about your event, whether

by email or mail. Let everyone know why you are involved and how they can help. The people closest to you are a great starting point to get support and donations.

• Make sure to include a link to your web page in your email or letter,

another reason why setting up your own webpage is so important. • Create a potential donor lists and track who has donated to you. A

tracking sheet has been provided for you. • Ask everyone you know to support your event; ask Co-workers,

neighbours, member of your church, members of a cultural organization etc. People will not donate unless you ask!

• Remember to ask your employer for support. Some companies have

matching-gift programs, others may allow for “Lupus” day, or even enter a team in the Walk.

• Ask local merchants to support you, make a list of all the places you

frequent often—— supermarket, dry cleaners, flower shop, pharmacy, fitness club, doctor, church, school, etc.

• This is a great opportunity for merchants to gain advertising potential,

while also making a charitable contribution. • Use online networking ie; Facebook/Twitter to promote the walk and raise

pledges. Social media is a great way to consistently keep Lupus at the forefront.

• Host a Fundraising event. Anything from a bake sale to a Gala, the sky’s

the limit. • Make sure to let them know that donations to the Walk for Lupus are tax-

deductible. • If a donation is not possible, ask if you may leave a poster or flyer about

your event for their customers to see.

conquer lupus Methods of Approach

In PersonIn PersonIn PersonIn Person • Fundraising is usually more successful when you talk face-to-face with a

person. • Keep in mind you are collecting pledges for the over 1:1000 Canadian

men, women and children living with Lupus. • Try and educate your potential donors about Lupus. Go to

www.lupuscanada.org for more information about lupus. • Share your reason for getting involved in the Walk.

By TelephoneBy TelephoneBy TelephoneBy Telephone • If you were unable to speak to the intended donor in person, the next best

step is to contact them by phone. • Be sure you know what you want to say before calling. Do not pressure

people, approach people how you would like to be approached for a donation.

• Share your reason for getting involved in the Walk. • Be sure to thank them for taking the time to listen to you whether they

choose to donate or not.

By Email or LetterBy Email or LetterBy Email or LetterBy Email or Letter • An email can be another very effective and time efficient way to secure

pledges. • Personalize each email, do not send out a mass email. Some people do

not appreciate having their email address exposed to others. • Share your reason for getting involved in the Walk. • If the person decides to support you be sure to send a thank you email. • Be sure to thank them for taking the time to listen to you whether they

choose to donate or not. • The earlier you start your mailing campaign, the more time you will have

to follow up by letter, email or phone. • Always remember to communicate your GOAL to your prospective

donors. Let them know with their support you are that much closer to reaching your GOAL.

Can you raise $1,000 in one week? Can you raise $1,000 in one week? Can you raise $1,000 in one week? Can you raise $1,000 in one week? The following are tips to help you reach your fundraising goals in a short period of time. The key is to be motivated, positive and passionate about raising money to help those with lupus live longer and better. • Don’t be shy! Just go ahead and ask. The worst people can say is no –

and you will be pleasantly surprised with how many say yes! Demonstrate commitment and passion when asking for donations. Take pride in supporting lupus!

• Get out your address books, contact lists (work and personal) and email,

call or write a letter to every contact you have.

• Think big. There is bound to be at least one contact that can give big. All you have to do is ask!

• If you ask for small amounts you will get small amounts. If you ask for

larger amounts you may still get small amounts BUT you may get larger amounts as well. Small donations make it a longer climb to reach your fundraising goals.

• Always prepare yourself with a follow up letter. If your goal is to raise

$1000 in one week you need to send out a follow up letter a few days after your first request. If potential donors are aware of your deadline then they will be more likely to respond to your call to action.

• Always remember you are fundraising for a cause that’s important to

YOU! Your interest and passion in lupus can be infectious….use that to inspire others to give! Give people a chance to support something that is important to you by asking them to make a donation.

• Your goal must demonstrate to your potential donors how committed you

are to fundraising for the cause. For example; if you meet your fundraising goal with plenty of time left before the event, then why not raise your fundraising goal. This shows your commitment AND the need for additional support from other prospective donors. The result is even more money for lupus!

• Never make assumptions on the amount people will donate or if they will

donate at all. Be sure to leave the choice up to them.
