“I have to take 2 buses by myself every morning and night because my family home burnt down and everybody was re-housed. All my brothers and sisters are at a new school except for me as there is no space in class for me. That’s why I am late some days.

No-one bothers to check my homework at home, so I don’t bother to do it. In fact, no-one bothers much with me at all. That’s why I spend most of the lessons under the table. I slept in my school tracksuit last night as it is easier; no-one notices that either.”

Planning Your Event

We’ve put together some pointers to help you keep things running smoothly along the way!

What do you fancy? There are so many exciting fundraisers you could hold for us that it can be difficult know which to choose! A good starter is to think of who you’ll invite and what they’d enjoy. See our A-Z of Fundraising for some Inspiration.

It’s fundraising o’clock! Think about weather and timing:

• Inviting students? Steer clear of morning events!

• Thursdays or Fridays are great for a work event –

everyone is gearing up for the weekend.

• Keep weather conditions in mind for outdoor

events.

• Check to see if there are any similar events

happening nearby at the same time as yours.

Location, location, location!

• Make use of places you can get for free or at a

reduced charity price or bargain the price down -

a community centre, church hall, or campus

coffee shop are good places to start.

• Decorate the room and put up some Place2Be

balloons – add fairy lights and comfy cushions

and even your living room can be transformed

into the perfect venue!

Pennies make pounds

• Have a clear budget and achievable target in the

planning stages.

• Consider how to cut costs, e.g. publicise your

event through Facebook and Twitter rather than

posters.

• Good-will – ask favours from people—musical

contacts to provide entertainment - and donated

goods for raffle prizes/ food and drink for

refreshments. Just make sure to give plenty of

notice and ask us for a letter of authorisation to

show that your event is for charity.

With a little help from your friends

• Ask friends for a helping hand with setting up,

co-ordinating donations, serving food and drink

and providing entertainment.

• Make it a group effort and you’ll have loads of

fun!

Spreading the word

• If your event is open to the public or your

endeavour is unusual or exciting we can help you

contact local press and media to generate

interest. We cannot guarantee coverage but do

get in touch if you would like to give this a go.

• Use social networking sites to invite people and ask for help.

• Invite five friends and ask them to invite five

more.

• Posters in the community hall, local shop

windows, or your work/college notice board.

• Add that you’re doing the event to your signature

on your work and personal email.

Maximising donations

• Ask your employers to match the funds you raise.

• A raffle can be included in any event and is a great

way to convince people to donate as they have a

chance of winning a prize

• Introduce a competitive element to your event –

this will give the fundraising a buzz.

Raising Sponsorship

Here are some top tips on raising sponsorship money.

Personalise Personalise Personalise Personalise the enclosed sponsorship form (e-mail

us if you need additional copies) with details of your

sponsored event or activity.

Set up an online fundraising page Set up an online fundraising page Set up an online fundraising page Set up an online fundraising page on Virgin Money Giving – you can include a message from you, photographs, videos and details about Place2Be. Online fundraising pages work best when you add a personal feel and make people smile! Update your page as you prepare for the event. The unique link to your page will provide you with a quick and easy way to remind people to sponsor you.

What makes your sponsored event stand What makes your sponsored event stand What makes your sponsored event stand What makes your sponsored event stand out? out? out? out? Give it a tagline and add the personal touch. A sponsored silence if you warble in the shower will be a welcome break for your family, or an organised run is an impressive challenge if you only ever run for the bus!

Get somebody generous to sponsor you first Get somebody generous to sponsor you first Get somebody generous to sponsor you first Get somebody generous to sponsor you first

– others will hopefully follow their lead!

Ask your friends or family to tell their friends tell their friends tell their friends tell their friends about your sponsored event – they could take a copy of your sponsorship form into their workplace.

Invite people Invite people Invite people Invite people to come along to your challenge, or promise video/photographic evidence once you have completed the event.

If people are going to sponsor you they will want to

know their money is going to a good cause. a good cause. a good cause. a good cause. We have plenty of case studies and leaflets with information about Place2Be which you can pass on to your friends.

Contact the Fundraising team for stickers and other materials. Make use of balloons and a Place2Be t-shirt

on the day to draw attention draw attention draw attention draw attention to what you’re doing. Where possible take a collection bucket/sponsorship form for any last minute donations or pledges.

Use social networking sites such as Facebook and

Twitter to update people update people update people update people on your training and fundraising and remind them to sponsor you.

Ask everyone you know! Don’t be shy! Don’t be shy! Don’t be shy! Don’t be shy! Do your friends, family or colleagues have useful contacts? Think beyond asking the people closest to you – ask those in your social circles too, such as yoga class, sports club, or the café you frequent. Approach companies for raffle prizes to add an extra element to your fundraising. Many companies have Company Giving schemes, so ask your employer to match the donations you raise.

If your sponsored activity would make a good talking

point we can help you contact local press and local press and local press and local press and

mediamediamediamedia. While we cannot always guarantee coverage we are happy for you to get in touch if you would like to give this a try.

Send sponsorship reminders at key points sponsorship reminders at key points sponsorship reminders at key points sponsorship reminders at key points in the run-up to and after your event:

• Each time you have an update, such as news on how your training is going, photographs, once you’ve reached the half way mark in your fundraising ‘nearly there…etc’

• Ask just after pay day – people will be feeling more generous!

• ‘Two months to go’ email

• E-mail with a case study

• ‘One month to go’ email

• ‘One week to go’ – include information on Place2Be cheering point as an invitation to friends to come along on the day as well as an ask for sponsorship.

• ‘The event is tomorrow!!!’ email

• Post-event e-mail with an update and last minute reminder to anyone who has not sponsored you yet

Thank people Thank people Thank people Thank people who sponsor you at the time and thank them again once your event is complete. Send them a photograph and a note about how it all went - we’d love to see your photographs and hear your stories too! Let them know they can contact the Fundraising team anytime if they would like more information on Place2Be.

Children’s Stories

A typical day at school?A typical day at school?A typical day at school?A typical day at school? Lucy’s StoryLucy’s StoryLucy’s StoryLucy’s Story

‘Lucy’ was initially referred to Place2Be after her

mum died and teachers noticed a change in her

behaviour. She was getting into arguments with her

peers and her school work was suffering. Lucy was

trying to come to terms with life without mum and

getting used to living with mum’s partner Craig, who

became her principle carer.

It took Lucy many weeks to build up a trusting

relationship with her counsellor. Place2Be room

provided a safe environment for her to explore her

feelings of loss and the changes in her home life.

Together they spent time

discussing the family

dynamics and doing many

different types of creative

work.

Lucy then experienced another change when Craig

introduced his new partner into the family home.

Through the trusting relationship with her counsellor

Lucy safely explored the anger and confusion she

was feeling. A lot of creative work was produced and

stored safely within her box. Quite regularly Lucy

would go through the contents and reflect on some

of the work and discard others.

Lucy recently attended Craig’s

wedding and was able to

contemplate this development

and the differences in her life. She

brought the wedding

photographs in to share with her

counsellor and was confident and

happy about the changes in her

circumstances.

Lucy’s Place2Be sessions have

now ended and she is secure and

well adjusted. Her counsellor told

her she can access Place2Talk if

she needs to talk about anything.

A 12-year-old girl sits in the Place2Be office

crying uncontrollably. In the past few weeks

her attendance has dropped, she’s refused to

come to school, constantly complained of

headaches and mum caught her making

herself sick. She reveals that two girls

have been bullying her and a boy has

been sending abusive text.

A little boy goes to Place2Talk

A 9-year-old girl (who is receiving

counselling from Place2Be) sits in the

classroom and doesn’t think anyone is

noticing as she cuts herself with a piece of

paper.

An 8-year-old girl stands alone in the

playground, watching the others. She is

the main carer for her diabetic mother

who every few weeks slips into a coma in

the middle of the night.

A 9-year-old boy is feeling ashamed and

embarrassed as he arrives late for school

again. His mum finds it really difficult to

leave the house and this means he often turns

up late.

A 7-year-old girl isn’t paying attention. Last

night she was walking through the

estate with her dad when a car pulled

up alongside them and dumped a

bloodied body on the pavement.

A 5-year-old girl had her first school cookery

lesson. When the helper got the silver

foil out, the child asked if it was for

mummy’s crack cocaine.

Kane’s Story

‘The current financial climate

presents a real threat to

community services, particularly

mental health. These services

prevent young people from

entering the criminal justice

system by offering intervention

methods to support and assist

them, offering life skills and

tangible measures to live normal

and safe lives.

Place2Be is making those

early breakthroughs with children

that can define the young people

and adults they become. They

give these children support and

help that would otherwise not be

there. Children do not represent

100% of our population; but they

do represent 100% of our future.

I work with violent offenders in

prisons - mentoring those who

represent the extreme end of

hardened criminality. Although

the work is hugely important it’s

all too late. Place2Be offers a real

opportunity to prevent

youngsters taking the

path to lifetime

criminality, and the

associated

on costs to society.’

Jon Boutcher,

Detective Chief Superintendent Metropolitan Police

Eight-year-old Kane* was often

angry and violent at school. One

day he was so enraged that he

pulled the water fountain off the

wall and hurled it through a

window. After that Kane’s teacher

referred him to Place2Be.

We met with Kane’s mum and

started weekly counselling

sessions with Kane. Mum said she

felt relieved that he could come

to Place2Be, admitting that she

was struggling to cope with his

outbursts and difficult behaviour

at home.

Knowing we were there to help

Kane, his mum felt able to tell us a

bit more about her situation.

Eighteen months ago the whole

family had moved to London

from Ireland. Within a few days of

the move, dad left the family

home - completely unexpectedly

– and never returned. His only

contact was through cards sent

for birthdays and Christmas, with

no return address, so they

couldn’t know his whereabouts.

Kane rejected these cards, which

served only to fuel his anger and

hurt.

Through his counselling sessions

we learned that Kane blamed

himself for his dad leaving. He

was very private and struggled to

talk about his feelings, but his

emotions spilled out into fights

with his sister, mum and children

at school.

On one occasion when he’d felt

really angry at home, he yelled

that he wished he was dead, then

rushed into the kitchen, grabbed

a knife and held it to his chest. It

took many weeks for Kane to

build up enough trust in his

counsellor to share these stories.

Gradually he felt able to talk

about his feelings and express

himself through painting and play.

In time, Kane said he was getting

on better with his mum and sister.

Mum said they were talking a lot

more and she was helping him

understand he was not to blame

for the breakdown of the family.

Recently, Kane discovered that an

aunt was still in contact with his

dad. He asked his counsellor to

help him write a letter expressing

his anger, helping him move on

and feel more in control of his life.

Kane’s mother says that we have

‘saved her child’, and his teacher

says ‘he’s a different boy’,

reporting that he’s much calmer

and not getting into trouble. Both

mum and teacher know that with

Place2Be on-site in their school

there will always be help on hand

for children like Kane.
