Help JDRF to find the cure for type 1 diabetes by raising money for our ground-breaking scientific research while having some fun with your friends!

Here are some really easy and fun ways you can raise money for JDRF.

COOKING CHEMISTRY Do you know baking is just a very delicious experiment?

• Why don’t you choose your favourite recipe and cook up some yummy treats (savoury or sweet) for your class mates?

• There are a number of tasty carb counted recipes easily available, which means that those who live with type 1 will know exactly how much insulin they will need to use to enjoy the treat.

• Charge a small amount per tasty treat and raise money to help JDRF find the cure for type 1.

SARTORIAL SCIENCE Why not have a dress up day at school to celebrate how science has

changed our lives for the better.

• You could be a ‘mad scientist’ with glasses and hair standing on end, an astronaut about to explore space, what about a planet, a robot or even a character from your favourite computer game? Let your imagination go wild thinking about something scientific that has got you excited.

• Ask each class member to donate £1 to take part.

MUSIC MADE BY MACHINES Do you know that much of the music you hear on the radio or TV is made by machines?

• Synthesizers, computers, chaos pads…it’s hard to think of any music made today that doesn’t have a helping hand from some clever machines!

• Why not host an Electronic Dance Music party (or EDM for the cool kids!) at lunchtime or after school.

• Ask each class member to donate £1 to take part.

• Let people choose their favourite song for a 50p donation.

COLOURING FOR COPPERS Use the colouring sheets in this booklet to celebrate science and raise

money.

• Collect copper coin donations from your friends to colour and decorate their own colouring sheets.

GAME 2 GIVE The video games you and your friends play are only around because of

some very clever computer scientists. It’s another example of how science makes the world a really fun place!

• Holding a computer games tournament at your school is a really easy way for you and your friends to have heaps of fun and raise money at the same time.

• Hold knock-out tournaments at break or lunch times over the week with a winner crowned each day or at the end of the week.

• Ask each participant to donate £1 to take part.

CALCULATE THE CONICAL

SLIME LAB Why not use the slime experiment in our booklet to create a slime lab for your class mates.

• You can make different colours, add some glitter and really go to town.

• Slime can be taken home in plastic sandwich bags.

• You can run your slime lab over a lunchtime or after school.

• Ask each participant to donate £1 to take part.

OK, OK... this is just ‘guess the number’ with a science spin!

• Simply borrow a conical flask or jar from your school and fill it with whatever you fancy!

• Ask participants for £1 to guess the number in the jar – whoever gets closest to the number wins the contents of the jar or another specified prize.

• If you choose to use sweet treats as your prize you can make the guessing game a little trickier. Work out the carbohydrate content of each treat and ask everyone to guess that too, as well as how many treats.

• You may get told that ‘eating sweets’ causes type 1 diabetes or you ‘can’t eat sweets if you have type 1’. This is not the case. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition and sweets can be very helpful in quickly raising the blood glucose levels during a hypo for those who live with type 1. Knowing the carb content of food is key for those living with type 1 to ensure that just the right amount of insulin can be administered.

Do you have another great idea that will celebrate science and help raise money to support JDRF’s ground breaking work?

Be just like the world’s best scientists – let your mind come up with a fantastically fun way to support JDRF.
