For over 60 years, the Humane Society of Sarasota County has been dedicated to saving the lives of homeless pets. Since our inception, we have saved thousands of precious cats and dogs who would have otherwise been euthanized. Although we are the area’s largest no-kill shelter and each year save over 1,000 animals, we barely make a dent in reducing the pet overpopulation problem in this county.

Each year, approximately 8 million stray and unwanted animals are taken in by shelters across the country. Tragically, about 3.7 million — nearly half — of these animals must be euthanized because good homes cannot be found for them. It is a common myth that pet overpopulation means there are “not enough” homes for all the shelter animals.

In reality, there are more than enough homes, but not enough people are choosing to adopt from a shelter.

Nearly 17 million Americans acquire a new pet each year — but sadly, only about 20% choose to adopt their new pet. The rest choose to purchase their animal from a puppy mill, pet store or friend. In the last few months, we have rescued a number of puppy mill puppies who were all in horrendous conditions. One such dog was named Rita. Rita came to HSSC after living 8 very long years in a filthy puppy mill, always pregnant or nursing pups, surrounded by hundreds of other dogs while enduring darkness every day lying in a plywood box with a wire floor.

Thankfully, through an intense rescue operation, we were able to remove Rita from her deplorable living conditions and nurse her back to health. She now lives with two other four-legged siblings in a beautiful home and is experiencing a series of “firsts”. She loves her new name, Hannah Belle; enjoys her own bed, food and the opportunity to run and play; and most importantly, wakes up every day knowing she is safe and loved.

With your help, we can continue to save the lives of homeless pets in need. Miracles like Hannah Belle can happen every day, but it requires significant resources and the support of our community. Help us win the battle of pet overpopulation — consider adoption first and save a life.

On behalf of all our pets, staff, volunteers and Board of Directors, thank you for your continued support.

Warm Regards,

Every dog in our shelter can provide boundless love and companionship and deserves a fur-ever home. But some dogs are better for you and your lifestyle than others. Below are some tips on how you can find your lifelong pal and enjoy your years together to the fullest.

Co n SId er Yo ur LIfe St YLeChoosing the right dog generally means identifying the type of animal who matches your lifestyle. A dog’s size, exercise requirements, friendliness, assertiveness, and compatibility with children and other animals should all figure into your decision. Our trained adoption counselors will help you select a canine who will match your lifestyle.

Learn a b o u t d Ifferent breed S & MIxe S The size, appearance and temperament of most mixed breed dogs can be predicted just as well as pure breeds. After all, mixed breeds are simply combinations of different breeds.

Mixed breeds offer several advantages over purebreds. When you adopt a mixed breed, you benefit from the combined traits of two or more breeds. Mixed breeds are also likely to be free of genetic defects common to certain purebred dogs. In fact, mixed breeds are often considered the more “natural” dog. When you adopt a mixed breed, you adopt a unique companion.

Keep In MInd t Ha t a SHe Lter ISn’ t a d o g ’S Ho MeWhile you’re at the shelter, keep in mind that it is a stressful place for any animal. Quite often, a dog’s true colors won’t show until he’s away from the shelter environment. So even if you walk past a kennel with a dog who isn’t vying for your attention, don’t count him out. He may just be a little scared or lonely. While an active, bouncy dog might catch your eye, a quieter or more reserved dog might be a better match if you don’t have a particularly active lifestyle.

Ho w Mu CH tIM e d o Yo u Ha ve t o t r a In?Young dogs usually require much more training and supervision than more mature dogs. If you lack the time or patience to housetrain your pup or to correct problems like chewing and jumping, an adult dog may be a better choice. Remember that consistency and schedules work. HSSC offers several obedience training courses to help you and your new best friend exceed all your expectations!

EmmaCan you believe I lived in a kennel at HSSC for over a year? One day, a nice young couple came to the shelter to see me. They soon fell in love with my sassy attitude and unique personality and decided to finally give me home! We always have a lot of company and I love to travel from lap to lap. It turns out I am quite the socialite! Best of all, I sleep with my Mom and Dad every night and they think I am wonderful!

Fidget It doesn’t get much cuter than me! I am so thankful to be alive because when I was extremely young, I was thrown over a brick wall into an abandoned building and left to die. Thankfully, HSSC rescued me and nursed me back to health. Now I spend my days with my wonderful new family who think I am absolutely purrfect!

Tebow At the ripe old age of 7, I was surrendered to HSSC because my Dad had terminal cancer, and was admitted into hospice and could no longer take care of me. It wasn’t easy for a senior like me to be in the shelter. I was scared, depressed and missed my family terribly. I sat in my kennel longer than most because seniors and bigger dogs are often overlooked. I was so lucky when my new Dad walked in one day and thought we would be a perfect match. He’s a senior too! Now, every day, I wait for my Dad to put on his hat because I know that means we are going on a walk!

BrodyI was always one of those guys who had the worst luck! I had been in and out of shelters for over 6 long years because of circumstances that were completely out of my control. My luck changed forever this summer when I met my new Dad and he took me home. We are already best friends and he told me I will never go back to a shelter! He even sends tons of pictures to the staff at HSSC bragging about me!

Rudy I was first rescued by the Humane Society of the United States from a horrible puppy mill in Mississippi. I spent the first ten years of my life living in the most deplorable conditions imaginable. My rescuers said they have never seen anything like it. Because of space limitations in the Mississippi shelter, I was sent to live at HSSC to hopefully find my forever family. After just a short time there, I was adopted by a loving couple and now live in a beautiful home with all the wonderful comforts of life. I am so thankful to everyone who helped me along the way!

Christine has been a priceless volunteer at HSSC for over 3 years. She is a leader for our Canine Companion volunteer team because of her K-9 training knowledge and innovative approaches to helping our most shy, frightened dogs who have difficulty adjusting to shelter life. Every week, Christine teaches obedience classes for our shelter dogs and trains other Canine Companion volunteers on how to best handle dogs. She has created workshops and instructional videos that focus on training techniques specifically for shelter dogs.

Christine truly loves helping our dogs become well-adjusted, happy and obedient dogs and it shows in everything she does at HSSC! She is also a proud owner of two HSSC alumni!

Christine VickieWe have lost count of the number of our willful dogs who’ve been adopted by loving families thanks to Vickie’s hard work! She has been a Canine Companion volunteer for 4 years and her influence is felt at the shelter every day! Vickie has a special place in her heart for rambunctious dogs — dogs who many would not give a second chance. She is credited with “rehabilitating” every dog she has taken under her wing and each of her four-legged students learns to sit, stay, walk on a leash and so much more!

Knowing that our dogs aren’t their best selves in the shelter, Vickie organizes a weekly trip to Bayfront Park, where the dogs, along with their volunteer handlers, frolic along the beach and even take a dip in the water!

Two Siamese siblings soak in the rays as they lounge together by their new large window.

A brown tabby naps on a bed perched high on a wall shelf.

And when these furry felines get bored, they can wander over to a different cat tree, play with the dozens of toys scattered around, curl up in a comfy cat box or use a litter box in the private bathroom — all while listening to classical music.

This is just a glimpse of what the fabulous felines at the Humane Society of Sarasota County enjoy now that two rooms have been remodeled and converted to free-roaming cat rooms. Our new “community rooms” were made possible through a generous matching grant from the Robert A. Buzzelli Charitable Foundation.

By creating more “feline friendly” housing options for our adoptable cats, we are able to improve their overall health by providing a more natural living space to exercise, play and socialize with other cats and people. We are hopeful these changes will also reduce the stress levels in our felines and increase the number of successful adoptions!

Stop by and visit our furry free-roaming felines! They would love to show you their new digs!
