    March 1974Dear Friends ,

We send you our love in the name of Jesus our Lord. The f i r s t months of th isyear have been encouraging ones for us. V.e^ve fel t God. at work in our own l ives, and have also seen Him touching some of those around us. Just now, le t us t e l l youabout our in i t ia l efforts to witness in the kampung- Cslum) areas near us. Then wewill introduce you to a new Moslem friend, Kadir, and ask you to share our prayersabout his struggle with Christianity.

MATERIAIS;*Way back in November I began specific preparation for this evangelistic thrust.First came the tedious task of stamping our address on 25,000 scripture portion t ractsput out by the Indonesian Bible Society. Then I began translating filmstrips, i^ichwill.be used with a battery operated projector in ho^s of those who show muchinterest in the tracts. iJe have two large sets of .films, one on the l ife of Chr.nt/,the other on Acts. Another current project is the translation of a worklK>ok onNew Testament doctrines also for follow up work.TRACT DISTRIBUTION: In the past few months over 2,000 tracts have been ,along the railroad tracks in crowded kampung shacks that nearly touchIMlt doing this I've had opportunity to talk to several * time I ' l l always remember is the day I found ^self in front of .. . ? c'Since many Moslems were coming for their evening hour of _ askedtrouble to giving more tracts there. But .the.:^rd had other p^ns. Onefora tract. Then seeing that it was in their local fhis friends out from the mosque to get free t^cts tooleader of the mosque took one. Although I left praising , laternervous about having to pass the same place ' y return ome. ^ jon a Moslem stopped me there to ask if I was the one He

planned to give more. I said yes. Th^.his reply pf^^' iPnore7piease do ,answered, Those are good tracts. Anytime you want to come to give more, px n another occasion two homosexuals tried to l^e me people.) could have such a big impact on his friends^ and maybe even help to open the kampungfor the Gospel. In fact he*s already been sharing Christian materials with co-workersat the government pharmaceutical laboratory* A few times he s come to our home toget answers to t h e i r questions about Chr is t*

Our f i r s t real ind icat ion of his spiri tual progress came when he carefullyreferred to Jesus as Jesus KeriStus instead of Nabi Jesus (the Islamic phrasefor the Prophet Jesus ). Last week he told me that he and his mfe definitelybelieve Jesus i s God's Son, but yet he*s afraid to leave Islam because of probableretaliation - even physical harm - from family and friends* (Several of his wife sfamily are devout, active Moslem leaders). asked i f there had ever been a Moslembecome a C h r i s t i a n .

Well, w have a taped testinlorty of a former prominent Moslem leader (a teacherof Islamic law) from South Sumatra who recently accepted Christ. Kadir asked toborrow the tape, which he played through three times, checking all. the scripturereferences and vei^ses from the Koran. In fac t he was so impressed t h a t he played thetape again the next day at work. But the people there laughed him to shame when theyheard i t . Asians are very conscious of losing face , so v^en he returned here heacted like a whipped pup . Although he said again that this is a hard decisionwhich may take a .v^ile, he did agree with the tape and does believe Jesus is God'sS o n .

But we know that even the devils belj.eve and tremble, so PLEASE PRAY that Kadirand his wife will also have the courage to accept Jesus as Lord ^ d Saviour. You re i n our prayers t o o .

NEW TESTAMENT EVANGELISM....BRINGING LIGHT INTO DARKNESS

    August 1974Dear Christian Friends,

Do you remember the peace and joy that filled you when you accepted Jesus asyour Saviour? Probably this memory is especially vivid i f you were already an adulton that great day,. Then you can understand how Kadir, our new brother in Christ, canhave such contentment despite the criticism of his wife and parental family. Thankyou for the prayers that we know are being offered dai ly for this usually timid manwho is now eager to share his precious Lord with anyone who will listen. In one sens-^he s very much alone in his new life, but yet he s never before had a friend like Jesyswho st icks closer than a brother. In our las t let ter we told you how Kadir was reading the Word and asking questior.about Christianity, Just after he said he believed Jesus was God's Son but was s t i l lroJuctant to leave Islam, a group of co-workers ridiculed him vdien they realized justow seriously he was taking Christianity, Kadir seemed defeated and confused when he

visited us the next day. So I decided to leave him alone for a time so he could sortou his thoughts and wouldn't feel he was being pushed into a decision he wasn't readjfor, V/e prayed, but the Holy Spirit did the rest . . .~ I finally-^ visited Kadir ov^r two weeks later, he said he wanted to beap ized. Since I d taken so long about coming he'd considered going to another minis er of whom he'd heard, but hesil^ted because that man would e^q ect him to join aenominational church through baptism, Kadir asked, if you baptize me, can I just^ ^ Yes, Kadir Praise GtodI There was then a further delay while hean his wife visited their strong Moslem families in another town to te l l them of thif.ecision and to share what they'd been learning. Their disapproval was so strong that? vafe changed her mind and is upset that he stil l accepted Christ. He says her

probably greatly depends upon what sort of a change Jesus makes in hise. He never fails to ask our prayers for her. So please continue to pray that sheso mil accept Christ, iw e crave for them to know the joy of a Christian marriageas well as of salvation.May 19, Louise, Karen and I (his wife wouldn't go) drove id.th Kadir down to a^ beach nea* Jakarta s harbor, and there he was immersed.

^^ hile this teaching position is ended, my class at the Gereja Jerusalem Pentekostai erusalem Pentecostal Church) took on new hope when we began meeting in the preacher shome rather than in the church building quite some distance away. This seemed thelogical thing to do, since all four students were Preacher David s children. Untilthen David seemed quite uninterested in studying Bible doctrine. At first I didn trealize that now that the class was in their home he and his wife had to attend justto be polite Ever since then things have improved. The group has grovjn, and I feelour rapport is very good. V:e ve had many pleasant visits with Preacher David and hiswife. His teenagers now joke that whatever you teach on Saturday night, Poppy preachesbunday morning . So to some extent these lessons are reaching the whole congregatiorand for that we praise God In the year and a half I ve been teaching there, we vestudied Ephesians and are now going through the Schcme of Redemption.

finally, for the past four months I have been using the Gospel of John to teach^^ish to about 100 Buddhists, the students of a Christian university in Jakarta. Many of the students objected to studying from the Bible, but on their recent testthey expressed some scriptural concepts or beliefs. Even though these Thursday after-noon cesses are probably only a very temporary opportunity for me I hope some of thestudents will become more interested in Christianity as a result. This is the onlyBible class they ve had in three years at the school.

In all thccG fiituahiniiG, we your prayers that I will let God use me to reachtneso penplfi, to His glory. Our love to you al l .
