Costanza Algranti

The project ‘Design of Recovery’ by Italian designer Costanza Algranti was born of reflections on the process of recovery used in the construction of furniture and objects. It is a careful reflection, especially with regards to the use of copper, which will oxidise due to time, water, use and weathering to produce a full visual history. Algranti works with recycled materials, “gathering them, thinking about what they can become”: mainly copper, recycled wood, brass and iron. With these, she builds tables, benches, sofas, kitchen furnishings, objects and lamps. These are unique pieces, with the added customisation of choosing “your” piece of gutter and, in certain cases, even “your” raw material, thereby initiating a constructive transformation. Among Algranti’s recent works is a series of tables one meter by one meter – with the same module repeated for different coatings: iron, aluminium and copper – so the design gives way to matter, vanishing to magnify.

Blu Dot4

Trace 1 Minnesota-based design and production team Blu Dot recently introduced a new hanging lamp called Trace 1. It consists of a subtly-tinted glass shade resting on a copper pendant to create a simple interplay between two materials. Trace 1 made its debut at NYCxDesign 2014 and these unique constructs are available in three finishes: natural copper, or painted in charcoal or white.

Joseph Dirand Le Flandrin Restaurant

Parisian restaurant Le Flandrin has launched with new decor designed by Joseph Dirand. The brasserie menu has also been renewed, and the south-facing terrace is one of Paris’s must. In a continuing collaboration with architect Joseph Dirand, Le Flandrin proprietor Gilles Malafosse sought to recover the smoky glamour of the site’s original époque, “in pursuit of an international clientele, pleasure seekers and business people alike, Parisian or otherwise.“Joseph Dirand’s architectural scheme sees the mezzanines disappear and cascades of pink brick and limestone emerge, restoring the historic arcaded hall, whose rhythmic symmetry re-establishes the integrity of the original building.”The entry, through one such archway, achieves a sense of monumentality, yet the intimate lighting of suspended glass lampshades softens the lively spirit so peculiar to the Parisian brasserie and its traditionally deep volumes. The elemental curves of Eero Saarinen chairs share the floor with the architect’s own designs: polished wood and brass-lipped circular tables evoking the prevailing styles of the 1930s. The lounge is a veritable ode to Czech Cubism, with a smoked mirror ceiling framing an imposing bar in yellow-veined white Calcutta Gold marble and bronze.

Coffee addicts now have something to cheer about. With a blend of science and technology, a new portable coffee maker called the Hey Joe Coffee Mug lets users brew fresh coffee instantly. Designed by Jordan Warren, the Hey Joe Coffee Mug is a travel-sized device driven by a rechargeable battery and operates at three varying temperatures. Users get to brew coffee by simply pressing a button. An important feature of the Hey Joe Coffee Mug is that users get to heat their own lukewarm/cold coffee. The battery that powers the mug is rechargeable, located below the device. The battery transfers energy to various copper coils that are embedded within the heating unit, in the middle of the coffee maker.Copper coils harness the battery’s energy and enable the heating unit to heat water to one of three temperatures set by users. When the water has heated enough, it trickles onto the coffee pod, which brews the coffee.

Cheshire Architects Oud Table Light Cheshire Architects is an Australian practice that works on special projects. Nat and Pip Cheshire run their studio in Auckland city, operating across an enormous breadth of types and sizes, from large-scale architecture to small domestic objects. Oud Table Light is their new desk lamp. Its single, polished brass armature follows a continuous and unbalanced line, concealing all the mechanisms of a warm LED lamp.A sphere of polished crimson marble rests on a brass leg: its diameter is fitted to the palm, a quarter-turn operates the internal switch, and its weight, pushed off the axis of rotation by a skew in the channel, counterbalances the projection of the lamp.

Spanish designer Jaime Hayon has created a tableware collection of vessels with copper stands that reference the pottery and architecture of ancient Rome.Jaime Hayon’s New Roman collection for Italian brand Paola C is a series of containers in shapes that reference the forms of ancient carafes, plates and large amphorae storage vessels. It was exhibited at Paola C’s showroom in Brera during the last Milan Design Week.Inspired by the vessels of the Roman Empire, this collection transforms antique references into a celebration of contemporary craft. Each round-bottomed vessel is made from either copper, ceramic or glass and sits on pedestals in a range of metals, creating a contrast of different textures. The largest piece in the collection is Colosseum, a large, silver-plated bowl atop a brushed brass base shaped like the famous amphitheatre in Rome. There are two smaller versions of Colosseum as well as other plates on simpler bases.Titus is a vase that sits on a metal stand with four skinny legs. It is available in pale-coloured glass, silver, copper or ceramic, while the base comes in four types of metal.

Claudio Silvestrin’s interior architecture for Oblix Restaurant, on the 32nd floor of the Shard building in London, is elegantly simple, imbued with warm and powerful natural materials. It is a perfectly serene space in which the experience of dining becomes a unique journey: the feeling of being on top of the world, yet clearly grounded by the interior architecture developed by Italian-born and London-based Silvestrin. The design intends to give customers the feeling of being in a soulful, warm, earthy space, yet suspended on the 32nd floor of the Shard. The emotional qualities of the nourishing, life-giving elements that evolve from water, fire and earth are beautifully composed in pure, clear, decisive geometric forms, thus bonding the abstract space configuration with the physical nature of materials, particularly the stone strength and endurance. The natural materials that have been selected – raw, brownish, yellowish and reddish sandstone and porphyry for floor, walls and counters, copper and bronze, tan leather upholstery and ebony wood – provide the restaurant with a distinguished image of solidity, permanence and timeless luxury, intensified by refectory-like stone tables and totems.

Chris KabelKey Hangers The key hangers for the rooms of the Fogo Island Inn, a high end luxury hotel located on Fogo Island in Newfoundland, Canada range from a lucky snub-nosed cod head to an iron nail stolen from the first European settlers by the native Beothuk Indians and modified to become a spear head. Each bronze-cast object, by Dutch designer Chris Kabel, tells a small or large story that relates to the island. Together, the key tags become the chapters of a book about the present and past daily life on the island and its rough nature. Link: www.chriskabel.com

Striking in its elegance and Art Deco drama, the restaurant everyone’s talking about at the moment is Song Qi in Monaco. Paris-based architects Emil Humbert and Christophe Poyet have created a very sleek design with a contemporary twist on Shanghai’s 1930s golden age for the restaurant. The space is extraordinary in its impact, with refined attention to detail, the use of colour and the combination of materials bringing one of the most exclusive addresses in the world, on the avenue Princess Grace, back to life once again. The ring of chairs upholstered in vibrant green velvet around the central circular table is the main focus of the room. The eye is then drawn up in one seamless sweep along the brass bars surrounding the central table towards the ceiling and back down along the jet-black lacquered walls inlaid with brass frames and ornate rectangular lamps, to the black and white marble pictogram (a metaphor for the Star of Shanghai origami) in the floor. Lining the restaurant, large floor-to-ceiling windows lead the eye outside to the manicured gardens.

Hôtel Vernet in Paris is marking its 100th anniversary with a completely refurbished interior by French designer François Champsaur that celebrates contemporary elegance and French craftsmanship. From the entrance hall to the rooms, the accuracy and precision of the hotel’s design engages in a dialogue with the spirit of the space and its history. The contrast between two different eras creates a dynamic and light-hearted energy. This subtle chemistry rejuvenates the atmosphere without unnecessary ostentation. Other interesting touches include the curvy bar counter designed by Champsaur, which is placed in front of a stunning folded copper screen, as well as the way the room numbers resemble artworks in the corridors, placed on individual pedestals, lit from above. However, Champsaur’s vision for bringing together art and design is nowhere more visible than the hotel’s restaurant, where a minimalist assortment of dining furniture and contemporary art sits beneath a monumental stained glass dome designed by none other than Gustave Eiffel, the mastermind behind Paris’ iconic tower.
