THOSE WHO CAN, TEACH Andria Zafirakou

In March 2018 Andria Zafirakou was awarded the $1million Global Teacher Prize.   Andria, the daughter of immigrant Greek Cypriot parents, loved art and loved teaching, and always knew this was the career for her. However, nothing could have prepared her for the extreme deprivation and difficulty faced by the children at Brent’s Alperton Community School in London. Andria has been at the forefront of this school’s transformation into one of the most successful in the country, despite the incredible poverty and traumatic background of many of its students.   Andria is filled with energetic common sense, and has reservoirs of compassion, and fundamentally believes that art should be at the forefront of education. Since winning the award she has become a global spokesperson for a new approach to education, speaking to diverse organisations including Harvard, MIT, the Met Museum, the FA and governments worldwide,    THOSE WHO CAN, TEACH is her story and her vision, a poignant homage to all the unsung heroes nurturing the next generation around the world, a testament to the difference an individual can make, and an inspiration to us all.

THE HARDY MILLENNIAL Alice Vincent

The fact that gardening is restorative is well-known to its practitioners. But to those unfamiliar with soil, roots, and growth, gardening’s healing powers are revelatory. THE HARDY MILLENNIAL shows how plants and nature not only shaped one woman’s recovery in the aftermath of a breakup, but taught her how to connect with her past in order to define the person she would grow into.   Alice unpicks her, and her generation’s fascination with plants – despite small, gardenless, rented flats, the craze for planting is growing. We are turning to plants as part of the ‘slow’ movement, for mindfulness, and maybe as we are having children later to fulfil a desire to nurture, or create.   Alice looks at the history of women growing things – botany was both the only science acceptable for women to take an interest in, but also one they were excluded from in professional capacities. Europe’s gardens and landscapes were designed with male sensibilities – Alice rediscovers the many incredible female botanists from around the world and gives them a belated voice.   Full of wonderful facts – did you know ‘pteridomania’ was the Victorian name for the obsessive fern craze which swept middle class drawing rooms, influencing fashion and art, in the 1800s? Or that buddleia thrives in bomsbites – as it loves soil filled with lime mortar from crumbled buildings?  - THE HARDY MILLENNIAL is a pure joy to read, for nature-starved urbanites and keen gardeners alike.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN Zawe Ashton

Zawe Ashton has been acting most of her life. She has taken on many, many roles, from ‘little girl’ to Salome, from Fresh Meat’s Vod to a St Trinian’s schoolgirl, to a Jean Genet maid. An acting life is glamorous, passionate, focussed, and full of camaraderie. It’s also surreal, exploitative, baffling and often just plain hilarious.

To stay sane, an actor must tread a fine line between life and art, fact and fiction. But to do that, Zawe must work out where a character ends, and the real Zawe Ashton begins.

In CHARACTER BREAKDOWN, Zawe scrolls through a version of her life. Or is it a version of her art? Or something in between? In it, she encounters wonders, terrors, absurdities, obstacles and questions like: is a life spent more on appearance than reality any life at all?

WHITE FEATHERS Vanessa Moore

When her husband Paul dies without warning in the prime of his life, clinical child psychologist Vanessa is left reeling from the shock and the agony of knowing that she must face the rest of her days without him. How will she cope with her wrecked life, her teenage children, her dilapidated house, when the one person she has depended on for love and support has disappeared forever?

Plunged into the murky waters of sudden bereavement, Vanessa’s world is reduced to a desolate present and bleak future, until mysterious white feathers start appearing in unexpected places.  Comforted by a sense of Paul being by her side in her darkest moments - whether real or imagined - Vanessa begins to patch her life together.   As she begins to move through her grief, she remembers many of her clinical patients - children with trauma, or disorders who often showed great bravery and resilience - and their stories begin to help her own recovery. She begins to understand her profession from the other side of couch – and tries to pinpoint the ingredients that forge a path to acceptance, hope, and even new beginnings. In a blend of THE EXAMINED LIFE and THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING, Vanessa’s searingly honest memoir makes shines a light on the process of healing from a uniquely both personal and psychological perspective.

IN SEARCH OF SILENCE Poorna Bell

Poorna Bell was sold the fairytale of life. That love wins the day. That marriage is the rescue to an otherwise unhappy existence. That children are the natural progression of any relationship. But really, is it? Are we actually being honest about the expectations we have set for ourselves? Are we able to distinguish between what we really need from life, from everything that we have been conditioned to want? Because the current rhetoric doesn’t prepare you for the reality of life.In 2015 Poorna Bell became a widow after her husband Rob took his own life on a winter’s night, having battled depression and addiction. Her situation was unusual when compared to a lot of people, but she was left figuring out exactly the same things. Will she ever be happy? Will she find love again? Who will rescue her from her sadness?  Two years on and Poorna is rebuilding her life. And it is from this place – as she works towards choosing what she does and doesn’t want from society, that she will explore a different conversation around fulfillment and self-worth.Cutting across the remote landscapes in India, New Zealand and Britain, Poorna Bell explores the things endemic in our society such as sadness and loneliness, to unpick why we seek other people to fix what’s inside of us.IN SEARCH OF SILENCE is the recognition of the echo chamber we find ourselves in, in terms of what constitutes a successful, fulfilling life. This is a heartfelt, deeply personal journey which asks us all to define what 'happiness' truly means.

And that's when inspiration struck...   Enter Molly, an unloved and unwanted cocker spaniel rescued from a classifieds website. THE UNEXPECTED JOY OF BEING SINGLE Catherine Gray

Single in your late twenties or, hold the phone, in your thirties or beyond? Oh hi! You're in the right place.

Over a third of us are now single. With the single camp growing at ten times the rate of the actual population, it is now the norm to be single well into our thirties - the average marriage age for women is 35 and 37 for men. But nobody seems to have told society, romcom makers, songwriters, marriage-hungry mothers, 'tick-tock' uncles, our mates or us that.

Cue: single anxiety. Love addiction. Spending hours scrolling through dating apps. Being inconsolable when he/she doesn't text. Humming 'Here Comes the Bride' when they do.

Catherine Gray went through all of this. And then some. She took a whole year off dating to get her love-hooked head straight. How do we chill our boots about our single status? Detach from 'all the good ones are gone!' panic? And de-programme from urgent, red, heart-shaped societal pressure to find your 'other half*'? We know intellectually that single is far preferable to panic-settling, yet we forget that almost constantly. Why? Psychologists and neuroscientists tell us. Let's start the reverse-brainwash and locate our happily-single sanity, for good. Are you in?

*Spoiler: you're already a whole person.

SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER 7 BESTSELLER

Ever sworn off alcohol for a month and found yourself drinking by the 7th? Think there's 'no point' in just one drink? Welcome! There are millions of us. 64% of Brits want to drink less.Catherine Gray was stuck in a hellish whirligig of Drink, Make horrible decisions, Hangover, Repeat. She had her fair share of 'drunk tank' jail cells and topless-in-a-hot-tub misadventures.

But this book goes beyond the binges and blackouts to deep-dive into uncharted territory: What happens after you quit drinking? This gripping, heart-breaking and witty book takes us down the rabbit-hole of an alternative reality. A life with zero hangovers, through sober weddings, sex, Christmases and breakups. In The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober, Catherine Gray shines a light on society's drink-pushing and talks to top neuroscientists and psychologists about why we drink, delving into the science behind what it does to our brains and bodies. Much more than a tale from the netherworld of addicted drinking, this book is about the escape, and why a sober life can be more intoxicating than you ever imagined. Whether you're a hopelessly devoted drinker, merely sober-curious, or you've already ditched the drink, you will love this book.

HELP ME! ONE WOMEN’S QUEST TO FIND OUT IF SELF-HELP REALLY CAN CHANGE HER LIFE Marianne Power

Marianne Power was stuck in a rut. Then one day she wondered: could self-help books help her find the elusive perfect life?

She decided to test one book a month for a year, following their advice to the letter. What would happen if she followed the 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE? Really felt THE POWER OF NOW? Could she unearth THE SECRET to making her dreams come true?

What begins as a clever experiment becomes an achingly poignant story. Because self-help can change your life – but not necessarily for the better . . .

Help Me! is an irresistibly funny and incredibly moving book about a wild and ultimately redemptive journey that will resonate with anyone who’s ever dreamed of finding happiness.

Praise for HELP ME!

I love it! Hilarious and thought-provoking! Love! (Fearne Cotton)

A sweet sharp read, and the last chapter made me cry. As someone a bit dubious of self-help books, it’s perfect:…It’s quite a fun journey through the ups and downs of negotiating ourselves through life, but underneath that is a serious, generous message, and it really does feel like you’ve learned something by the end of it. (Jessie Burton, author of The Miniaturist)

Marianne’s writing makes me smile and has moved me to tears more than once. She combines a journalist’s no-nonsense investigative skills with a tenderness and honesty that sets her apart . . . In helping herself, it turned out that Marianne was helping all of us. (Erin Kelly, author of He Said/She Said)

WORK LIKE A WOMEN Mary Portas

By most people’s standards I would say I’ve had a pretty good career. I’ve reached the top of the ‘ladder’ and been lucky enough to have had a damned good life. But at what cost?

At the cost of who I truly was.

I played the business game for years, where the rules were set by men for men. I was tough and aggressive. I put in long hours, was competitive and resilient. But I suppressed my natural energy, sensitivity and instinct. I worked like this until I couldn’t any more. And then I changed.

My team and I rebuilt my business on the values that matter: collaboration, empathy, instinct and trust. Values not always associated with leadership or winning, but which have made every one of us feel good.

Now I want to share what I’ve learned through my own experiences, and am still learning, to change the way you work so that female energy and power will be seen as the most valuable currency in today’s new world of work.

It’s time to create an unstoppable force for change. A feminine force.

THE REAL WALLIS SIMPSON Anna Pasternak

Wallis Simpson is known as the woman at the centre of the most scandalous love affair of the 20th century, but in this surprising new biography, bestselling author Anna Pasternak redeems a women wronged by history presenting Wallis as a convenient scapegoat to rid England of a king deemed unworthy to rule.

Now, Anna Pasternak’s THE REAL WALLIS SIMPSON tells a different story: that Wallis was the victim of the abdication, not the villain. Warm, well-mannered, and witty, Wallis never wanted to divorce her second husband or marry Edward. She never anticipated his jealous, possessive nature--and his absolute refusal to let her go.

Edward's true dark nature, however, was no secret; everyone close to Edward knew that beyond his charming façade, he was immature, self-absorbed, and uneducated--utterly unfit to rule. On the night Wallis died, Princess Margaret told a friend, "It wasn't her we hated, it was him.”

Rejecting the sinister schemer at the centre of a dark royal fairytale, Anna Pasternak reveals Wallis Simpson as an intelligent woman, written off by cunning, powerful men and forced into a life she never wanted in a complex, riveting, and tragic true story of manipulation and betrayal.

FIGHT: WIN FREEDOM FROM SELF-SABBOTAGE Hazel Gale

We all do things that we wish we wouldn't in life. We underperform, procrastinate, push people away and say the wrong things. But what if we could find a way to beat our destructive tendencies at their own game? Fight explains the psychology of self-sabotage and offers techniques for taking control of your thoughts, to maximise success and thrive.

Cognitive hypnotherapy understands that the unconscious and conscious minds have different priorities and that the unconscious governs a large percentage of our behaviour. It is this part of the mind that is responsible for self-sabotage and in order to tackle unwanted emotional or behavioural issues, we need to communicate with it. Fight is a one-to-one therapy session with Hazel that will show you how to address the psychological blocks that hold you back, equip you with the tools to manage negative emotions, overcome them and emerge victorious.

You'll learn how to battle those inner monsters and let go of limitations, to reach your true potential and live a happier, more fulfilling life.

WHO’S THAT GIRL Maxine Mei-Fung Chung

The Voices come and go. Like flu. Weather. Weekend shags. I’m unsure how long they’ve been here, or if they intend to stay. I want to say they’re friendly.   Only three people in the entire world know what’s going on in Alexa Wú’s head: her therapist Daniel, her best friend Ella, and her stepmother Anna, a fellow survivor of her father’s abuse. At twenty-four she’s supposed to be sorting things out, starting a new relationship, holding down a restaurant job, finding a toehold in photojournalism. Having dissociative identity disorder - her life moderated by a series of voices and personas she calls The Flock - doesn’t make things easier but she manages. Keeps her other selves in check, only letting them out, letting them take the light, when it suits her. When it’s safe.   But when Ella gets a new job at a high-end gentlemen’s club, The Electra, she catches the attention of its sharklike owner, Navid, and is slowly drawn into its inner circle, Alexa finds herself the unwitting keeper of a nightmarish secret. With no one to turn to and lives at stake, she follows Ella into London’s cruel, abyssal underside on a daring rescue mission. Alone and in danger, she’ll discover whether the Flock is her greatest asset or whether their intentions are darker.    WHO’S THAT GIRL is an omnivorous examination of life with D.I.D and the coruscating trauma of life in a misogynist world. It deftly navigates the swirling confluence of mental health, family history, and the impossible, fracturing weights that young women are forced to carry wherever they go.

THE DIVIDED Mai Davies

THE DIVIDED is a political thriller set over the course of 24 hours.  At its heart is the plight of two asylum seekers, Rami and Jalilah, who, fleeing from the immigration authorities, end up hiding on a ledge on the top of a London skyscraper.  There they find themselves caught in a game of cat and mouse between a ravenous 24-hour media and a desperate government minister.   The media finds them and puts them on live TV.  ‘Let them stay or deport them?’ The world starts watching, on every TV,  smartphone and public screen.  We watch as the public’s sympathies turn with each revelation.   With Rami and Jalilah, at the centre of the storm, is hostage negotiator, Chris Jones, who throws out the rulebook to save the lovers. Behind the scenes his estranged wife risks her career to help him. If he saves Rami and Jalilah, can Chris save his marriage and save himself?  His back is against the wall and the world is watching…

HABEAS CORPUS Gary Bell QC

The Inns of Court, London, 2018. Elliot Rook QC is one of the greatest barristers of his generation. An eccentric genius, equally admired and envied by his colleagues. He is also a complete fraud.   Unbeknown to the high society of the Inns of Court surrounding him, Rook is not the Old-Etonian, Oxfordian gentleman he pretends to be. In fact, he is an ex-petty criminal with a conviction of his own and a colourful, impoverished past that he has spent decades keeping secret. Until now…

The body of a young woman has been found on the outskirts of Rook’s home town of Cotgrave in Nottinghamshire. One man alone is suspected of the murder: Billy Barber; and there is only one man whom Barber will allow to defend him: his old acquaintance Elliot Rook QC.   Rook teams up with Zara Barnes, a hijab-wearing, state-school-educated apprentice whom his snobbish legal counterparts have dismissed out of hand but in whom Rook sees a special talent.   Rook and Barnes travel back to Cotgrave, where they encounter shadowy figures from Rook’s former life as well as new threats who will call into question everything that he believes to be true and everything he has fought for.   The truth is there for the finding, as Rook says. But at what cost?

THE VOICES S.K Tremayne

Jo Ferguson is a 33 year old freelance journalist. Recently divorced from her tech specialist husband, she's renting a lovely room in a lovely house in a trendy corner of north London. Her landlord is also her new flatmate (and also her best friend since way back): posh, prosperous TV producer Tabitha Ashbury.

For all her money worries, Jo considers herself happy: she's always been bouncy and optimistic, and she loves the variety of her job, she loves her new, central location in town, she loves all the hi-tech gimmicks in the flat: from the smart TV and smart lighting, to the Home Assistants in every corner of the apartment - Alexa, Google, Apple - telling her what TV to watch, telling her jokes when she's bored...

And then, one silent winter evening, Alexa says something, unprompted, something which chills Jo the core.

From that moment, Jo's "happy-go-lucky" life descends into digital hell, as all the glossy, cutting-edge technology takes over her life: apparently invading her phone and her laptop, destroying her career, taking her money, commanding her to kill herself. Jo is trapped in a hi-tech horror-show and she is the star. But who is doing this to her? Who is manipulating the technology? Who hates her that much?

But Jo has an even darker fear. Her father died of suicide, after developing late onset schizophrenia. The first symptom of his madness was when "the TV started talking to him".

NIGHT RUNNERS Richard Crompton

‘A compulsive whodunnit set in Kenya' Ian Rankin

In the slums of Nairobi there is a place where the fires burn constantly and the stench of decay never fades. Dandora, the city's dumping ground, is filled with shadowy figures the world has left behind. Here too are rumours of the night runners - those said to be possessed by spirits, or the devil.

Detective Mollel understands what it means to be an outsider. Born in a Maasai village and forever at odds with the corrupt ranks of the city police, he is drawn to the case of a Fatima, a young girl who has gone missing in the slum. His search takes him deep into Nairobi's underworld, from rap clubs to voodoo healers, and to the lair of the self-styled overlord of Dandora. He learns that Fatima is not the first person to have disappeared, and to find out what has happened to her, Mollel must open his mind to things he cannot see...

CALIPHATE Raymond Khoury

It's 2018 in Ottoman Paris.

Situated within the edges of the great Islamic empire that has dominated Europe since the dawn of the Ottoman Caliphate, Paris has for centuries been an important and influential Ottoman outpost. The empire, however, is under strain. Political and economic unrest has created a volatile, dangerous climate, and destabilizing terrorist attacks are on the rise.

Kamal Arslan Agha is a patriot. A Special Investigator of the sultan’s Tashkeelat-i Hafiye—the secret police—he is on the frontlines of the empire’s harsh response to the increasing turmoil. But the Caliphate’s efforts to impose law and order spare no one, and soon, Kamal’s own family draws the attention of the Hafiye’s ever-watchful eye.

His brother and sister-in-law have stumbled onto a secret, a piece of knowledge so profoundly dangerous that the Caliphate will do anything to suppress it. With the very foundations of the empire under threat, Kamal’s family has only one choice: they must run. And whether or not they escape the long-arm of the Hafiye will determine not only their own fate, but the existence of the Caliphate itself—its past, its present, and its future.
