PAT ON THE BACK FOR THE

    TIMBER INDUSTRY

The government has won the applause of the

British Woodworking Federation (BWF) after it was

announced that a ban on wood waste to landfill

was not to be introduced. After a Defras Call for

Evidence last year revealed that the volume of

material ending up in landfill was smaller than

initially thought, has been declining steadily since

2009 and looks to continue, the decision was

made that at the present time a ban would create

an additional burden for businesses. BWF and the

Timber Trade Federation (TTF) highlighted the

work of the Timber Resource Efficiency Partnershiptowards the goal of reducing the total amount of

waste produced by the timber sector. On the

whole, BWF members are generally supportive of a

landfill ban, with most indicating that they found a

sustainable use for much of their wood waste.

Defra will continue to monitor the situation.

FIRA has welcomed a new Standards and

Regulatory Manager to their team. Tristine

Hargreaves has joined FIRAs team of

experts in technical standards for the

furniture industry, representing FIRA at BSI

    technical committee level. Tristine worked

in the manufacturing sector for 11 years

and, more recently, 7 years in retail, giving

her a wealth of experience of the furnitureindustry. She will represent the industry at

the charity through sales of the Pink Drill and other

activities and Makita is proud to have been involved.

    Fundraising activities included:

The Pink Drill: 5 per unit sold was donated to Breast

    Cancer Care.

SCHATTDECOR + PALIS = INDUSTRIAL DIGITAL PRINTER

Schattdecor, the dcor paper printer, has teamed up with Palis (Padaluma Inkjet-Solutions GmbH), a

digital print specialist, in an exclusive development partnership. For the next 2 years, the companies are

putting a new type of high-performance single-pass digital printer with a 225cm print width into

operation. Printing from roll to roll, the unit will have a working speed of 75-150m/min and be capable of

efficient and economic short run work. Dcor base paper will be used with pigments identical to those

    used in rotogravure printing.

The Palis 750 unit has already shown that single-pass inkjet printers are ideal for the industrial scale

use in the dcor industry and the product series is to be expanded with the new Palis 2250.

Schattdecor has had a strong commitment to digital print dcors since 2009 and provided each of its

worldwide plants with 160cm-wide digital press in 2011. Last year it took a 2m-wide multi-pass digital

printer into operation and the exclusive partnership with Palis shows Schattdecor is keen to push the

    progress of inkjet technology.

BASF ON SHOWBASF presented its broad portfolio of state-of-the-art

products for furniture and flooring coatings at the

European Coatings Show 2013 in Germany.

BASF is tackling the technical requirements of

modern wood coatings as demand is shifting from

solvent to water-based coatings without compromising

product properties. In the furniture and flooring

industry, coatings are used to protect and provide visual

effects for wood-based furniture around the house as

well as many different types of flooring.

For instance, the Laromer UA 9095, BASFs latest

addition to water-based UV-curable dispersions, is ideal

as a primer or topcoat on furniture and flooring. It has

high transparency and good grain enhancement and

can increase the vibrancy of the natural wood colours. With good abrasion resistance, high chemical resistance

Laromer UA 9095 is compatible with many dyes and is a

perfect binder for UV curable stains.

2013 was never destined to find aplace among the truly great ZOW

years. Despite the immeasurablybetter timing of ZOW at the beginningof the year, the sheer size of Interzumdominates the odd years, persuadingthe dcor and printing giants (and most

of the big names in hardware) to holdoff showing new designs until May. Butnot all followed the trend. TheHornschuch stand - which was awashwith visitors poring over the latestdesigns - proved beyond a shadow ofdoubt that buyers still want newproduct early in the year. Launching allits new product at ZOW with fewcompetitors to steal its thunder ratherthan waiting until May could prove tobe a very shrewd move for Hornschuch. The impending turmoil that some arepredicting from the lack of an overlap

between this years Interzum and Lignamay yet see a drop in visitors to theMay shows, as many of those whotraditionally visit both could find theprospect of two dead days between theevents difficult to justify.

Hornschuch was not alone in itsthinking. Senoplast also used theoccasion to launch new product andmany of the edgebanding specialistssaw ZOW as the ideal opportunity toannounce new products and team-upswith major laminate and board

producers. On the Ostermann stand, big news was its alignment to Pfleidererwith absolute matches proudly on showat the entrance to its stand. MKTannounced more new designs than Ican ever recall seeing in one show froman edgebanding manufacturer - and its

Alphatape Flexible could be the answerto the prayers of handleless doormanufacturers who want a product thatworks inside routed profile handles.

The trend towards handleless doorsmust have had many a handlemanufacturer quaking in his boots. Not

Furnipart. Take a look at Maui, a grace-ful handle from Furnipart that capturesthe very essence of the handleless trendbut adds a stylish twist to put beautifulhardware centre stage in the moststylish of modern designs.

    It was never going

to be as big as in

    the years without

    an Interzum butseveral exhibitors

    had turned that to

    their advantage at

    ZOW 2013.

    shrewd launches

Hornschuch used ZOW as its launch pad for countless new

designs - and the stand buzzed with visitors.

Below: The global adhesives specialist, Jowat, used ZOW 2013 as a platform tohighlight the performance of its Jowacoll dispersions, Jowat-Toptherm and

Jowatherm-Reaktant hotmelt adhesives. Jowat claims these products add extra

functionality, such as reduced flammability, a better gloss, improved surface

hardness and sustainability. Adhesives from the Jowacoll range are ideal for the

manufacture of flame-resisting doors while Jowatherm-Reaktant hot melt (the

colourless, transparent, crosslinking version) is designed to enhance the gloss level

Full marks also to Union Knopf fortheir rugged Raw collection. As amajor supplier to the fashionistas of theapparel industry - an industry fromwhich trends tend to filter down -Union Knopf usually has a pretty goodinsight into whats coming up next in

fashionable circles and roughly-crafteddesigns are certainly enjoying arenaissance at the moment.

I have to say, I do enjoy heavy-weight texture - which is why I cannotresist a chance to grab some dramaticphotography on the VD Werkstttenstand. Texture does not get muchmore heavyweight than on VDWsmighty pressed dcor panels and therewere several new designs making theirdebuts at ZOW. Take a look at Blocks,Brickwood and Blockwood. They arejust fabulous for architectural use, or for

dramatic effect in hotel reception areas.ZOW 2013 seemed to be a

statement year for the glass industry. Asfar as I can recall, never have there beenquite so many producers of decorativeglass and mirrors showing laser etched,

printed, painted - and otherwisedecorated glass and mirror products. The message from Polish glass specialistFischmet was send us a picture andwell send you glass panels for wardrobedoors, kitchen doors, bathroomcabinets - whatever you need. Im not

wild about the idea of having giantcarrots emblazoned on my kitchencabinet doors and the two-metreorchids on the stand seemed overkillbut, with a little more subtlety in theinterpretation, imaginative manu-

facturers might well find a way to addvalue and profit to products for the UKmarket by using printed or etched glass.

In all, ZOW 2013 presented 402exhibitors from 27 countries, including60 first-time exhibitors from 15 differentcountries. At around 24,000m2 andwithout Hall 19, it was a smaller than

usual show but provisional figures showthat around 11,800 visitors came overthe four days - a third from outsideGermany. Most exhibitors we talked towere content with results - and that initself made for a good start to 2013.

winning special purpose fabrics andperfectly matching dcors - the verylatest designs shown at an advanta-geously early timepoint in the year.

With few competitors to steal itsthunder, Hornschuch delightedvisitors with new metallic colours inits skai Sorisma EN fabric (back-ground) and matching films.

Rustic lovers will enjoy the newSanremo Oak with natural Legnoembossing, which enhances theruggedness of this dcor. But if rusticis your thing, dont miss Barrique Oakwith its glazed effect reminiscent oflimed finishes. The white pore struc-ture provides an alternative to otherwhite dcor options.

Contrasting with Sanremo, Yukonis a simple, timeless woodgrain with

finer structure which is accentuatedby slight discolourations. Yukon ismore a collection of the best ele-ments of several timbers, themed to

the current trends, than a specifictimber. Its very effective, nonetheless.

New in fantasy designs was theunashamedly retro Tosca, availablein Sahara, Mocca and Stone Grey.

For something completelydifferent, take a look at skai ColoreMagic. This plain film, with subtleiridescent metallic effects is a high-tech offer with an exciting planishedlook which provides metallic optionsin bronze, copper and steel. Its notdifficult to imagine it combined withskai Sorisma EN to fabulous effect.

ne of the biggest surprises atZOW 2013 was the presence ofColumbus. Available through

Coventry-based Ney Ltd, Columbus hasbeen making membrane presses for thelast 30 years and its range of equipmentencompasses mass production mem-brane presses, foil lamination machines

and machines for forming plastics andsolid surfacing materials.

On show at ZOW 2013 were a coupleof the companys smaller machines, designed for the small to mid-sizeworkshop. Although the machines on thestand had made some pretty complex, deep pressings, the Head of TechnicalSupport & Dev-elopment, ManfredMller, who is in charge of customersupport in the UK, confirmed theCombitherm on show was the standardmachine: But it is really two machines inone: a heating unit and a forming unit,he says. With this machine it is possibleto bend laminate. We also make biggerheating ovens of up to four metres andwe make bigger presses with vertical orswivel movement.

    The entry level Columbus

Combitherm at ZOW had a 2880 x1280mm bed and was capable ofpressing components of up to 500mm inheight. We use a silicon membrane, explains Manfred. It is heat resisting upto 220C, which means it is capable ofbending timber components quite easily,as well as doors and other components.

The top level machines made byColumbus are typically anything up toeight metres in length with a bed widthof two metres, But we are currentlymaking a machine which is fifteenmetres long which offers cycle times ofbetween two and twenty minutes, depending on the glue.

Columbus also makes vacuum bags ofup to 3800 x 1200mm capable of

forming almost 360 around com-ponents. With a silicone vacuum bag andone of our 80m3 pumps , its possible tomake 600 items a day. We have anothersolution which is a seamless volumemembrane which is ideal for a 3880 x1540 table with a height of 600mm.

FunderMax Compact Interior panelsare high-pressure laminate panels(HPL) manufactured to standard EN438. The design of Max Alucompact (42,06) is the same as the Max Compact

Interior panel but Alucompact, as thename implies, has aluminium bandson both sides under the decorativelayers or in the core. This ensures thateven perforated panels are extremelystable. Furthermore, this panel typecan be used as wall cladding withoutrear ventilation. In furniture app-lications, the edges stand out asmodern design elements.

Though similar in form andfunction, Max Compact with WhiteCore is stylistically different: the panelcore remains a pure white. Colour

Hettich's ArciTech drawer systemwas first previewed at Interzumin 2011. Firmly targeted at the

premium segment, it is arguably thebest drawer system ever made andcaused quite a stir. It is now availablein the UK.

ArciTech has been developed togive kitchen and furnituremanufacturers the ability to create

perfect drawers for different segmentsand every consumer need. Theluxurious action of the Actro runneroffers superb running smoothness, stability and soft-closure. The uniqueprism concept provides a profilegeometry which ensures exceptionallateral stability. Synchronised controlguarantees a co-ordinated runneraction and the perfectly-balancedSilent System for soft-closure gentlyshuts drawers while giving themmaximum loading capacity.

    Hettich UK marketing manager Colin

Patterson says: It is appropriate thatHettich, the pioneer of the soft-closedrawer, should take the whole drawersystem concept to a new level. Now thatconsumers have come to expect theirdrawers to slide back in place gently

with barely a murmur, the time is rightto exceed their expectations once more.

Vertex is just the sor t of concept tobenefit from ArciTech and we aredelighted to be working with such asinnovative studio as Mascari.

At Interzum, Hettich will display itsfu ll range of furn iture fi tt ings. Theexhibition will also be the launchpad

for new ranges of Hettich's ProDecor

Is it possible to apply a contour edge-banding by hand and get a good glue lineand a strong bond?

It is not possible to control glue tempera-ture at the point when the band is appliedto the panel and edge pressure withmanual machines. The edge force required

is more than a manual operator can applyconsistently. Automated machines are theonly real solution.

With stiffer banding materials, such as2mm and 3mm, the edgebanding has a

natural memory which will not conform tothe shape of the panel. How can manufac-turers avoid loose glue joints on smallradius corners?

The only way is to control the speed andpressure of the application system at cor-ners to ensure that the glue joint is allowed

to flash off while still under pressure. Thismeans specific speeds on corners. It is alsoimportant that the glue unit should beclose to the application point to preventthe glue cooling too much before the bandis applied to the panel. Good automated

    The problems with

    contour edgebanding

    are not as difficult to

    solve as they might

appear. Furniture Journalgets some advice from

systems automatically do this but manualand semi-automatic machines are as yetunable to provide this control, significantlylimiting the complexity of shapes whichcan be performed.

The butt join is a very precise operationrequiring accurate measurement, trim-ming and laying of the band but oftenbutt joints turn out loose. How is it pos-sible to avoid this problem?

A good operator can achieve acceptable

butt joins manually but this requiresconsiderable time - often as much as fiveto ten minutes depending on the operator-and it is difficult in production tomaintain this quality. Good quality auto-matic machines are able to perform thebutt join in 10 seconds and the qualityperfect with tolerance of 0-0.3mm.

How does one avoid the problem ofunsmooth glue application and ensurereliably tight glue line on tight corners?

The gluing system is the heart of anyedgebander but even the best glue systemwill perform poorly if inferior glue is used. The best solution is to use the best qualityglue available. The small extra cost of abetter glue is recovered many times insaved rework, better quality glue line, lowermachine maintenance, on-site replacementof faulty components and more.

What advice wold you give to manufac-turers who have not compromised on gluequality but are still experiencing problemswith adhesion on complex shapes?

The ideal glue system does not leavethe glue heating for extended periodsexposed to the atmosphere where theglue components will evaporate off anddiscolour. When glue components

evaporate off (noticeable by a glue smellin the atmosphere), the glue bond iscompromised and the glue line willdeteriorate and be more challenging oncomplex shapes. In the worst instance, the banding can fall off.

Is it possible to make reliably edgedcurved components on an edgebanderwhere the glue unit is some distance awayfrom the first pressure roller?

The ideal glue system would have the

glue unit as close as possible to the firstpressure roller so as to minimise anycooling of the glue before it is applied tothe panel. If this distance is too long, special long open-time glues are requiredto maintain the glue before it is applied. The disadvantage of such glues is thatthere is a longer time for the glue to setonce it is on the panel and, conse-quently, on tight corners the band willtend to pop at the transition points.

    For manufacturers wanting to automate

the process of applying edgebands tocurved components, whats the return oninvestment likely to be?

Manual and semiautomatic machinesare inexpensive, typically 10,000-35,000. However, output is slow andquality variable. Fully automated CNC-machines are expensive and the compo-nent output means typically these can bejust ified when component value is veryhigh so long cycle times are reflected inthe value of the finished component.Fully automatic non-CNC Vector

machines use a unique process whichenables justification on a ROI basis onmuch lower component cost. They caneven be equipped with lifting systems, such as vacuum lifters, to cope with largeworksurfaces.

Gapping remains a problem with manual

    and semi-automatic machines.

A good glue line and a strong bond.

Butt joins that take 5-10 minutes using manual

methods take 10 seconds with an automated

system and have tolerances of 0-0.3mm.
