The importance of furniture lighting

Your kitchen is, by its very

nature, a multi-purpose space.

The modern kitchen has evolved

into much more than just a work

area - as well as a centre for food

preparation or dining, it can also

be a quiet area where you relax by

yourself; a space where two people

can casually talk and mull over the

day’s events; or it can be used as

the key social space in the home.

This is the room that gets the most

use, both during daylight hours and

well into the evening, so it is important

that the lighting solution works on

different levels, providing both

functional and ambient atmospheres

as appropriate, even creating these

simultaneously if required!

The correct lighting solution is

invaluable to maximising the mood

of your kitchen, no matter what you

use it for; yet despite its importance,

kitchen lighting is often overlooked.

Consider the amount of investment

in other elements of the average

kitchen; cabinets, worktops,

appliances, flooring etc.

Aspects of lighting

Task Lighting

Put simply, task lighting provides appropriate and ample light to allow you to undertake everyday ‘traditional’

kitchen duties such as food preparation e.g. chopping vegetables. It focuses on making the kitchen a working

area. Task lighting is usually situated between the work surface and the person working in the kitchen.

The key to getting a

lighting scheme that is

right for your needs, is an

understanding of the

basic principles of lighting

design and how the

space itself functions.

The kitchen design, the various

functions you need your kitchen

to fulfil and the moods you are

looking to create, are all of utmost

importance when choosing the right

lighting scheme for your kitchen.

To help you select the lighting that

is most suitable for your needs, we

have identified the 3 key lighting

environments for any kitchen; these

are Task, Mood and Convenience.

Using each of these appropriately

and achieving an overall balance to

the room results in the perfect

combination of aesthetics and

function. It is worth noting that,

as it is driven by usage, some types

of lighting will naturally fall into

more than one environment.

Mood Lighting

Also referred to as feature, decorative or accent lighting, mood lighting is used to add dimension and depth

to the room in order to create atmosphere and provide personality. Mood light provides a general all-over

illumination that is fairly soft and unobtrusive. The purpose of mood lighting is to make the kitchen look

attractive. It is a decorative lighting effect, not a functional one. This kind of kitchen lighting immediately

improves the impact of any kitchen, yet it is often the most overlooked.

Convenience Lighting

Convenience lighting has a more specific purpose. It is directional and intended to be focused towards a

specific area or to be used for particular job (making that job more ‘convenient’). It provides light for certain

areas where a light is needed, i.e. in drawers or in cabinets.

Why LED lighting?

LEDs (Light Emitting

Diodes) are an extremely

efficient way of producing

light and have overtaken

the traditional halogen

as the first choice in

modern kitchen lighting

design. Overall, LEDs are

more energy efficient and

are therefore better for

the environment and less

expensive to run.

We are extremely proud

to announce that the

vast majority of Sensio

Lighting‘s product

range is now LED.

LED vs Halogen

��Energy & Cost Saving HD (High Definition) LEDs have a

lens over each diode to make the

emitted light more intense, resulting

in a higher light output per unit

when compared with halogen

fittings. Using this energy efficient

technology each fitting has a low

power consumption, with units

running at 1.7W on average. By

moving from conventional halogen

lighting to LED you can save up to

80% on power consumption and

see considerable savings on your

electricity bills.

��Brightest Light OutputHD LEDs have a high light output -

equivalent to 20W of halogen -

whilst only using a fraction of the

power consumption.

��Long LifeHalogen light bulbs are rated for

approximately 3,000 hours of useful

life, while LEDs are rated for

approximately 40,000 hours

of indoor use. The long life span

of LEDs means they will ultimately

outlive your kitchen - saving you

time, money and hassle with

replacement lamps.

��No Wasted Heat With halogen bulbs, around 90%

of the energy used is converted to

radiant heat. In comparison, with

LED lighting only a fraction of the

energy used is converted to wasted

heat. LEDs do not overheat and have

zero output of ultra-violet radiation

compared to that of conventional

halogen lighting.

��Advanced Technology LED kitchen lighting brings a

whole new set of previously

unimaginable possibilities. Some

of the new technologies you’ll find

within these pages include the

incredible LED Dimming Sensor

(see page 30), which is the first of

its kind in the UK.

Connecting by colour

Right: Each of Sensio's drivers are

fully colour coded, making it simple to

identify and select the correct model

for your chosen lighting product(s).

Sensio's new colour

coding system has been

introduced to make things

just that little bit simpler.

To simplify the process of

selecting the appropriate driver

for your lighting requirements,

Sensio has introduced an easy-to-

use colour coding system. The cable

on the light fitting, the distributor

block on the driver and the outer

packaging for each product all carry

a colour-coded label.

All drivers featured in this brochure

are coded with a small coloured

square. Simply refer to the product

table on page 29 to find the colour

that is correct for your lights.

How to select the right driver for your lights

1. All drivers in this brochure are

colour coded. Refer to the

product table to find the colour

that is correct for your lights.

2. Each driver can run a number of

lights. Simply divide the wattage

of the driver by the wattage of a

single light and this will tell you

exactly how many lights can be

run by the driver.

Example:

15W driver with 3W lights

15 ÷ 3 = 5 lights

3. Some drivers are available in

more than one rating e.g. 15W

and 30W. Simply work out the

best option dependent on the

number of lights you have.

Note: Drivers have a limited

number of ports where lights

are connected. A driver with

12 ports is therefore limited

to a maximum of 12 lights.

of ports.

RGB Colour Changing

SE40570 / SE40571 � RGB Colour Changing Remote Control A stylish and contemporary solution

which enables you to create dramatic

lighting effects. It can be used with

the SE10320 RGB Colour Changing

Flexible Strip and the SE10321 RGB

Colour Changing Surface Light.

Select a slow colour fade or a rapid

colour change through the 7 pre-set

RGB colours. Alternatively, by simply

turning the dial, select one colour.

SE40522 / SE40523 � RGB Push Button Control Offers the same functions for colour

change as the remote control but

with a push button control and

sound indication for the selection

made.

LED Dimming

SE40580 ��

Dimming Remote Control (use with 24V LED products)

SE40581 ��

Dimming Remote Control (use with 12V LED products)

Tailor your lighting system to your

needs. The two Dimming Remote

Controls allow you to change your

lighting effect at the push of a

button. The Dimming Remote

Control has a central dial so you can

manually alter the level of

illumination, as well as a dim button

and full brightness button.

Motion Sensor

SE40517 � Infra Red On/Off Sensor Operated by swiping your hand past

the sensor to switch the lighting on

or off. This product has a maximum

detection range of 5-10cm so

unwanted detection will not be a

problem. It can be used with any

Sensio product (12V, 24V or 240V)

which doesn’t already have an

integrated sensor.

adding one or more of the

products featured here.

Sensio's range includes a

wide selection of advanced

controls that allow you to

create the lighting effects

you desire and manage the

functionality of your lights

with just the simple touch

of a button.

SE40520 ��

Dimming Sensor Switch(use with 12 V or 24V LED products)

This ultra slim and lightweight

product includes three functions:

• Touch dimming - by holding

your hand over the sensor the

connected lights will dim down

and be taken back up to full

brightness. Simply remove your

hand when the light level you

desire is achieved.

• Swipe on/off control - swipe

your hand over the sensor to

switch the connected lights on

or off.

• In cabinet on/off control - the

function of the sensor can be

changed by pushing the button

on the front of the unit. If you

decide you want to use the

product inside a cabinet push this

button and the function will be

changed. Mount the product

inside the cabinet so the sensor

is against the door when closed.

The product will now act as an

on/off sensor for the lights inside

the cabinet when the door is

opened or closed.

Note: Dimming remotes are not

compatible with products which

contain a built-in sensor.

On/Off Control

SE40516 �� Cabinet/Swipe Sensor Switch Designed for mounting on the

underside of a cabinet, or recessed

into the pelmet to act as an on/off

switch by simply swiping your hand

past the sensor to switch. The

detection range is 5-10cm.

SE40520 �� Dimming Sensor Switch

This can also be used as a swipe on/

off switch along with a dimming

solution.

Touch Control

SE40519 � Touch Switch This can be used with any of our

12V, 24V or 240V products which

have a metal body and do not have

an integrated sensor. When installed

simply touch the product casing to

switch the light on or off.

Cabinet Sensors

SE40515 � Motion Sensor Switch This can be mounted inside a

cabinet unit and will detect once

the cabinet door is opened and will

switch the light fitting on. A delay

of 10 seconds to 3 minutes can

be adjusted to allow for the light

to continue being active once the

sensor has detected the door being

opened.

Radio Frequency (RF) Remote Controls

SE40518 � Cabinet Sensor Switch This can be mounted at the front of

the inside of a cabinet unit, so the

door sits against the sensor when

closed. This product detects the

opening of a cabinet door which

switches the in-cabinet lighting on.

Once the door closes the sensor will

detect this and switch the lights off.

For use with all products (12V, 24V

and 240V) which do not have an

integrated sensor.

SE40670 � Wireless Dimmer (use wih 12V LED products)

SE40675 � Wireless Dimmer Control (use with 24V LED products)

These dimmer controls generate

special effects through a combination

of two or more different channels

and enable you to set the required

light level in your kitchen. The RF

wireless system can work up to a

multiple of 9 receivers per remote

control with either 12V or 24V

lighting products.

SE40682 �2 Channel Transmitter

SE40684 �4 Channel Transmitter

Designed to be used with the RF

wireless dimming system. These

remotes have either 2 or 4 buttons

which act as channels, sending

signals to multiple receivers in order

to either turn the receivers on or

off, or dim selected locations in the

kitchen.

Note: Only suitable for use with products that have a metal casing

and no integrated on/off switch or sensor. Rather than using a rocker

switch, simply touch the casing of the fitting to switch it on or off.

Configuration Multiple Quadra units can be daisy chained

together for synchronised switching.

Operation Once the unit has power the touch sensor

will illuminate blue. To operate, simply touch

the sensor to switch the light fitting on.

To turn off repeat this process.

Note: This product is not to be used in

a series in which a sensor is already

incorporated into the Quadra fittings.

Operation The SE40520 sensor has different functions.

Under cabinet - The lights are activated by a hand

swipe across the sensor and deactivated the same way.

- In this mode, hold your hand in front of the sensor the

dim the lights. The longer you hold the more the lights dim.

In Cabinet - The lights are activated by the opening of

a cabinet door and deactivated once the door closes.

The RF control system has two functions: dimming and on/off. The system consists of a

handheld transmitter and receiver and is compatible with the 12V and 24V LED system

implemented in Sensio products. The RF wireless dimmer can generate special effects through

a combination of two or more different furniture lighting systems. One remote can be used

with up to nine receivers to create different lighting effects and each button can be synched

to a bank of lighting.

The new Sensio connect

cabling system enables

light fittings to be easily

changed without the need

to re-route or remove

existing cabling.

Step 1

The Sensio connect cabling system

is installed in the same manner as

conventional wiring and lighting

lamp housing units placed where

required.

Step 2

Then, simply click together the

special fitting of the LED lamp into

the end of the cable fitting

protruding from the lamp housing.

Step 3

Push the LED fitting into the lamp

housing..

Step 4

..and the lamp is ready for use.

The new Sensio connect cabling

system is unique to Sensio. Currently,

we are the only company in the

industry that offers this solution.

This system makes changing LED

fittings a problem of the past.

Previously, if an LED fitting had been

installed and a problem subsequently

occurred, the electrician or fitter

would need to access the driver to

remove the fitting, potentially

causing damage to units or

decorations. Now, with the new

Sensio connect system, the light

fitting can simply be unplugged

from the connecting cable and

swapped for another fitting.

Changing light fittings couldn't be simpler!
