  Fusion is an Algerian student magazine edited in English; it aims toll the vacuum in the written English productions in Algeria. The idea of themagazine blossomed as a group of university students, teachers and adherentsof the American Corner Constantine decided to launch a magazine thatwould reect their thoughts, dreams and hopes by means of English; theirfavorite language.

  The idea of creating an Algerian magazine that uses English as a mediumof communication would have been unthinkable a few years ago, because sucha project would be submitted to certain linguistic conditions most Algeriansare aware of. Although Arabic is considered the ocial language in Algeria,still French dominates the professional and social life of almost every Algerian.Statistics indicate that the number of newspapers in French is higher than theone in Arabic, as a result the Algerian reader is linguistically inuenced. Someargue that in such a bilingual environment, English cannot impose itself uponthe Algerian society, and it is rather limited to a specic category that includesacademics and students.

  But what this assumption seems to ignore is the fact that Algerians givemuch importance to English not only because it is their academic choice, butalso because it is a language of power, business and prestige. We have noticedthat a number of students from dierent elds of study -even from the scienticones- are attending English classes. Therefore, one should not deem the interestof some Algerians in learning English as an obligation; it is rather a passion forthem. Music, movies and TV shows play an enormous role in attracting many Al-gerians to learn and love English. Nowadays, Algerians’ love for English appearsclearly in social media, such as Facebook, in which a large number of Algerianscommunicate in English, not just with native speakers but even with other Alge-rians. A Facebook page called “I am DZ and I speak English” is a typical example,as it has more than 200 291 fans, most of whom are Algerians.  The virtual sphere is not the only place where Algerians exercise theirEnglish because many of them do use English frequently in real life. That is,they write poetry, short stories and articles in English. Others, mainly universitystudents organize activities where they debate and discuss a multiplicity of is-sues in English. In addition, many Algerian novice singers seem to prefer English,especially new bands that want to share their art with the world, and English iscertainly the best medium.

In such an environment, Algerian editors will denitely guarantee a num-ber of readers who would certainly welcome to read an English piece of wri-

ting produced by another Algerian. In this occasion, we deem it appropriate toacknowledge some previous courageous initiatives, such as “50/Fifty Magazine”which is considered to be the rst English-speaking magazine in Algeria.Fusion comes out, therefore, in the right timing as it is going to be an openspace for the Algerian pen to express a variety of ideas through English. It willalso satisfy the increasing demands of readers to know about their environmentin a dierent language. The other signicant importance of the magazineis the cultural dimension, as it represents probably both the cultural rapproche-ment and the mutual understanding that University Constantine1 andthe American Corner Constantine are trying to reinforce between Algerians

and Americans.

What is an Ameri-can corner (AC)? 

 An American corner is a smalllibrary established by the U.S.

embassy with partnership of a local institutionof a host country. This corner aims to dene theAmerican culture and history for people overseasand to promote mutual understanding betweenAmericans and the people of the host country.

The U.S. diplomacy has established manyAmerican corners all around the world, in whichit targets big cities. In Algeria for instance, thechoice came on Constantine, Oran and Ouargla.

How has the American CornerConstantine beenestablished?

The American corner Constan-tine ACC was inaugurated in June 15th, 2008

by the former ambassador of the U.S. in AlgeriaRobert Ford and the rector of University Constan-tine 1 professor Djekoun. The Corner is located inthe same university as part of the central library.

The ACC is composed of three parts; a rea-ding room, a projection room and a small library.The reading room is the largest room; it givesadherents the opportunity to read and access tointernet. Besides, it is an open space for activemembers to organize a variety of activities. Theprojection room is designed to hold visual activi-

ties such as screening movies and documentaries.The library of the American corner contains morethan 2197 books in dierent domains such as:literature, arts, history, politics and social sciences.

Though the ACC is relatively small in size, itreached almost 4100 adherents. Many of themvisit the Corner every day which helps at creatinga warm atmosphere. Many friendships have beenmade at the ACC between adherents from dif-ferent nationalities; they get to know each other’sculture and lifestyle.

The linguistic aspect is vital at the ACC;most members consider it a space where they can

practice and enhance their English. The cornerfacilitates the learning of this language by provi-ding the members with the necessary materialssuch as books, as well as the opportunity to usethe language regularly through the ‘discussion-based’ sessions.

How can you join the ACC?Access to ACC is for free, and it is open for

the Algerian public and foreigners living in Algeriaregardless of their age or their educational level.The way to subscribe is quite easy: any interestedperson should approach the ACC and present acopy of the identity card and two photos. Thepassport copy is accepted for foreigners.

Hardworking, motivated and competitive arethe qualities that characterize the director of theAmerican Corner Constantine ACC Mrs HassibaBendjaballah. She took the responsibility of theCorner a year ago and since then, Mrs. Hassibahas been showing a great enthusiasm towarddeveloping the ACC.

Many would agree that she is the kind ofdirectors who cares about the quality of workand who is ready to give her best even in criticalmoments. Regardless of her pregnancy, she kept

working and the day she gave birth to her babyboy is a day that she would remember as a longday of hard work at the ACC. The employees atthe ACC said that they didn’t fell her absenceafter giving birth as she calls every day to makesure everything is going well

Mrs. Hassiba has encouraged a lot of activemembers to refresh the ACC through organizingactivities all long the week. Her attempt to makethe ACC a space of creativity is exhibited throughher dedication to the Fusion Magazine whichwas born in her oce.

he dominant opinion about the situa-tion of the Algerian university is that it criesfor a radical change. A glance at UniversityConstantine1- that would presumably repre-sent other universities- shows the discontent

of students mainly about the quality of admi-nistrational services; for instance, it is only inlast October 2013 that a signicant number ofstudents got their diplomas while they weresupposed to have them in June. This delaycaused graduated students who chose to starttheir professional life to lose many opportuni-ties since the graduation certicate is manda-tory in applying for a job. Yet, it is worth men-tioning that the Algerian administration, like the

educational system itself, is witnessing reformswhich include new computing programs, towhich the administrational stas were not su-ciently trained. Moreover, students seem to belost and struggling with the new educationalsystem LMD that is basically made on research.The latter imposed two problems: one of theknowledge- acquiring methodology and the se-cond is about the means to get this knowledge.Students found themselves right in the gapbetween the traditional way of teaching whichwas about receiving the information from theteacher and the new method which requireshim to be a guide to the process of learning.This gap enlarged by the lack of the researchmeans like internet’s academic sources, booksand laboratories ‘equipment in some depart-ments.

These problems and others helped shiftstudents’ attention to the black spot on thecloth rather than the white surrounding. Amidst

these misfortunes -as described by students-there is a blessing in disguise, which is freeeducation from primary school to college. Thestate provides an entire funding to schools,institutions, and in our case, universities. SomeEuropean universities like in Sweden or Den-mark provide free tertiary education, but itdoes not cover more than the academic funds.However, the Algerian educational system isfollowing the policy of indirectly supporting

the students nancially, by covering the feesof accommodation, food, medical-services andtransport and what goes for Algerian studentsgoes for the non-Algerians as well. Studentswho live in provinces which are 50 km far from

the university they study in, have the right toaccess to accommodation in halls of residencethat are built intentionally near universities tofacilitate the students’ mobility and assure theirarriving on time. Transportation is free as well;many buses are devoted to carry the studentsto the closest station to their houses and they

are timely distributed to t their schedules .Inaddition to that, students whose families havelimited resources are granted direct nancialsupport. Moreover, major program grants thebest students opportunities to get scholarshipsoverseas.  It is also worth mentioning that universitiesprovide the students with extra activities likephotography, Taekwondo, basketball, origami,chess, riding, football and others that are meant

to t students’ interests and evolve their talentsunder the supervision of experts, also create akind of interaction between learners of distinctelds and ages. Equally important, conferencesof experts and pioneers of many elds likeastronomy, human development, lawyers, andlinguists are held at universities to introducethe students to post-studies professional life.For instance, University Constantine1 organizedon December 2013 a conference held by bai-lis at the level of the auditorium discussingthe necessity of amending their penal law andstudents were welcome to be present. Also, inKasdi Merbah University, Ouargla, students ofEnglish are provided with trainings at the levelof foreign companies to put what they havelearnt into practice, discover the breaches andcorrect them. In the domain of human deve-lopment, University Constantine1 organizedon May 2012 training by an expert in the eldfrom the Canadian Center of NLP to improve

students’ memory performance and boost theircommunication skills that are mandatory forthe next level that is to say the professional life.

To sum up, while some students focus oncriticizing the circumstances, ask for a readilyready change and lift the situation to a betterlevel, others prefer to move “slowly but surely”,be grateful to what they have been granted,use what they have now and get the necessaryknowledge to put their gratitude to Algeria into

practice in the coming days.

As future teachers,we have been taught in TEFL(Teaching English as a ForeignLanguage) that students learnbetter if they are well nou-rished. Eating well aects lear-ning positively; it boosts thememory power and increasesconcentration as well. Howe-ver, it's not the case at Uni-versity Constantine1 wherestudents are suering froma lack of nutrition. Whilesome students in developedcountries are buying lunch

with their ngerprints; Alge-rian students' are still sue-ring and waiting to have a reallunch time.

The Carnegie MellonUniversity in the U.S. is a goodexample in which students arebuying lunch with their nger-prints. Like any student, fourseniors had problems with

nding their student-ID cards.Instead of complaining, theycame up with a brilliant idea:PayTango. This idea of buyingfood using only ngerprintswas created by Ms. Lau-Keeand three classmates, and it isalready used in several loca-tions on the Carnegie Mel-lon campus. This shows theimportance of school lunch.Moreover, students in theU.S, often write articles aboutschool lunch such as: bene-

ts of eating lunch, negativeeects of skipping it and goodlunch choices. They havealready started taking thewhole process of school lunch

to the next level by creatingnew ways to improve it.

In Algeria, UniversityConstantine1 as an example,students are not buying lunchwith their ngerprints. Theyare still having serious pro-blems with lunch time for anumber of reasons. First, somestudents don't even have

lunch time. Studying non-stopfor hours aects students'performance. For this reason,I think a lot of students arepassive; they attend their lec-tures and take notes and that'sall, this will certainly create afeeling of exhaustion. Second,there are others who can'talways make it to the collegerestaurant because it can ne-

ver cover the huge numbersof all the students which manyof them consider a violation oftheir rights. Not all studentscan pay for expensive food;they can't buy it from privaterestaurants and cafeterias.This obliges many studentsto become less motivated tocome and spend a long day

at university. And nally, wehave those who don't eat untilthey come back home or so-metimes bring some home-made food. Even if they haveenough money to buy foodfrom private places, they pre-fer to gain time, to stay outfor some fresh air, and spendit with their friends instead of

waiting in long lines.

There are many thingsto say about this particulartopic, but a simple compa-rison like the one above isstrong enough to show themessage of this article. If thislack of food is not taken intoconsideration, many students

will face health problems suchas: weight loss, lack of energy,slow pulse rate, a decreaseof blood pressure and manyothers which will aect theirperformance negatively. The-refore, it's high time to fol-low the path of developedcountries!

Every year, the Islamiccommunity celebrates the bir-thday of the Prophet Moham-mad, peace be upon him whichis called El-Mawlid n’abawi(from Arabic, means the birthof the Prophet). This memorytakes place in the 12th of Rabi’

 Al-awwal, the third month inthe Islamic calendar. All Muslimcountries have their own way ofcelebrating El-Mawlid. Algerians,for example, have a unique wayof expressing their joy on such aspecial day.

Throughout time, Algerianshave known dierent ways tocelebrate El- Mawlid n’abawi.In the past the celebration ofthe Prophet’s birthday wassomehow dierent from thatof nowadays. As Mrs. “Sir-El-Houda”, aged 75 years old, hasacknowledged, ‘people beforehad considered El-Mawlidexactly like Aid El-Fitr and Aid

El-Adha. That is, women cleantheir houses, cook traditionalmeals which are similar to“Couscous”, like “Trida” and“Chakhchoukha”, for dinner,and prepare other things likecandles and henna, a reddish-brown dye used on the hairand skin. Men, on the otherhand, go and prepare com-

petitions for memorizing theholy Quran in Mosques. In theMawlid’s eve, families meet ina house, and have celebratorydinner together. Afterwards,women lighten candles, puthenna, and form groups athome to read Quran, while mengo to the mosque to speak aboutthe Prophet’s birthday, peace be

upon him, remember his lie,contemplate his teachings, rewardthe children who have memorizedthe Quran, and sing some reli-

gious songs (Anasheed). Te dayafer, in the morning, women pre-pare “Bsissa” or “Zrir” or break-ast, which is a sweet meal madeup o ground wheat mixed withhoney and butter, as they used

to do or the newly-born babies’events. Meanwhile, women gatherand go to the cemetery .Aferthat, they make “Korsa” (similarto Crepes) or lunch, and pay a

 visit to their amilies and riends. 

In the present time,however, Algerians have slightlychanged their way o celebrating

El-Mawlid. It is true that almostall the Algerians still consider itan important day, but because othe new liestyle o people, newways o celebration have appearedwhile others have vanished. Wecan notice the Mawlid’s manies-tations 15 days or even a monthbeore. Tis is because whereverwe go, we find street-sellers withtheir tables o fire-crackers and

fireworks. When we asked Mr.“Mohammed”, aged 53 years old,he said that women still cooktraditional meals or the Mawlid’sdinner like beore, prepare Hen-na, lighten candles and even makethe “Bsissa” or breakast, whereasmen are not all o them doingwhat their ancestors used to do,because o work and modern

lie.“Only 20% o men, who trulygo to the mosque to celebrate this

 joyul event, read Quran, singAnasheed, and reward the child-ren who have memorized Quran,while the rest stay at home”,added Mr. Mohammed. Te thirdcategory which is the youth andthe teenagers ofen spends the eveoutside playing and setting off

fireworks which Mr. Mohammedconsidered a crazy, dangerousand harmul way to celebrate

El-Mawlid. Yet, the 13 aged Abd-Ennour sees it as: “a beautiul wayto express our happiness and toshow others that we also know

how to celebrate”

o conclude, in spite otheir modern liestyle, Algeriansare still holding on their identity.Tey still wait or such events ontenterhooks, prepare or themand celebrate them in a diversityo ways. No matter how crazythey are in expressing these ways,but they do it with a remarkableand a beautiul touch whichreflects the spirit o this commu-

nity.

Once Upon a Time ...

CONSTANTINETo many persons, the hardest partin writing does not lie in writingitself, but in the beginning to write… I openly confess that I belongto this category of people; one ofthe clarications I could, perchanceprovide is this piece of a philoso-phical vision: the paper mirrorsour memories and the pen echoesour souls … once I take my pen,magically, all my memories beau-tify themselves to seduce this thininstrument implicitly, at times, andexplicitly at many other times … notsurprisingly, my memories remindme of any lady in love; she mayspend hours and days to choosewhat dress she should put on when

her lover asks to see her: “his eyeshave to see only me!” that’s thecondition that she cannot get outof her head; I smile every time I hearthis story and then I whisper: “sheis acting instinctively!” deep downshe must know that, beauty, as thesaying goes, is not only seen by theeyes, it is also felt by the heart …my pen has “soul!” my memorieswere too vibrant to the point that

they granted my pen with a “soul”! That “soul” which could straight-forwardly feel the predominantplace Constantine has in me … thatconnection made my pen and I de-

cide to write, in few lines, Constan-tine … as our eyes pass through thisbunch of words, our hearing senseperceives a “Nûba” coming fromthe ancient times, and our mindstravel thousands of decades back,to the black and white epoch, tothe black of the “Mlaya” and thewhite of the “Aâdjar” worn by theladies of Constantine, once upon atime …  Olden times armed thatthe gorgeousness and grace ofConstantine captivated a massivenumber of lovers who oered allwhat one can give to make thedesired dream a reality… historywitnessed the painful death of hun-

dreds of admirers in the pursuit oftheir dreams, and the pleasantnessof other devotees chosen by des-tiny to make “her” their own pro-perty… by “her”, I denitely meanConstantine … II have always per-sonied her, and will always do...the grammarians would certainlymake an exception if they felt whatI feel for this extraordinary city …

Thousands and millions

years back, Constantine was reig-ned by the Phoenicians and Ber-bers (1000 – 46 B. C.); she was gi-ven the name “Kirta” which means“the castle” or the “city”. The name

“Kirta” was transformed to “Cirta”when the Numidians took over thecity after the defeat of the Phoeni-cians by the Romains in “The ThirdPunic War”.

In the year 308 C, Constan-tine’s beauty faded away due tothe civil war between emperorMaxentius and usurper DomitiusAlexander. Four years later (311 C)the emperor “Constantin the Great”defeated Maxientius, he got herback, smartened her and namedher after him.  In 432 C, the Vandals were

bewitched by Constantine anddecided to acquire her, a dreamrealized, and a desire achie-ved … but not for so long …Constantine belonged to themfor only one century … the By-zantines, too, could not resist toher charm; they acted so hard toown her, again, a goal attainedand a wish granted … a similarfortune to the Vandals; a cen-tury!

  The fascination and classi-ness of Constantine reached to theArab World … In the 7th century,the Arabs showed their keennessto possess her … and so they didfor their eagerness was too strong… they changed her name to “Qus-santina” … consecutively, “Qussan-tina”, the city, was governed by se-veral “Wali” alternatively dependenton Baghdad coming after the “dy-nasty epoch”; namely the Fatimids,the Zirids, and the Hafsids. toman Empire … the city, then, wasruled by forty one “Bey” (governor).The history of Constantine, in thattime and age, was marked by the“Bey Salah” who ruled the city from1770 on until 1792. His love andadmiration to “Qussantina” weredemonstrated in so many ways andare still visible today, mainly, in thearchitecture of the city.

The French invasion of the Algerianland the year 1830 made AhmedBye protect Constantine ercely…the resistance drained out all theenergy of Constantine … by 13October 1837, France captured thecity and Constantine was 1848 anintegral part of the French mother-land and centre of the “ConstantineDepartment” from the year 1848 onuntil 1962 where Algeria has got itsindependence…Constantine, in fact, is not only aland limited by some curvy lines …Constantine is a lot more than that… Constantine is past, present and,hopefully, future …  My memory and my pen

The above-stated questionsare not a part of test; they don’thave right or wrong answersbut truthful ones, only. Whenchoosing this topic, a lot ofpeople frightened me about

the sensitivity of these ques-tions. They claimed that onlyfew would accept to answer myquestions, and if they ever do,they won’t say the truth. Butagainst all the odds my inter-viewers proved it wrong; theywere very welcoming and com-fortable to share their viewsabout this beautiful feeling thatbinds people’s hearts and souls.

Here, I share with my readerssome views that I have selectedfrom more than 50 interviewswith persons from dierentgenders, ages and social situa-tions.

 ADEL (  40- YEARS OLD - MARRIED )

“Love is the most wonderful thing in life; in factit is the engine of life…the person I love is my air,

  JOHN ( 21 YEARS OLD ) “It is not easy to dene love but it is easy to feel it…loving someone requires being present next to him,trusting and loving him/her endlessly “

THEODORE ( 19 YEARS OLD ) “Love is a profound aection ofliking and caring about someone.Therefore showing emotions and af-fection is a big part of a relationshipthat involves love. The relationshipthat lacks the true real love is stuckin a world of hypocrisy”

  HADJER ( 26YEARS OLD -SINGLE  ) “Love is necessary inlife; we need it to for-give and to forget

I think love uncovers the good side in one’s perso-nality. Faithfulness is denitely the core of life and the key tohappiness in any relationship … I could never imagine livingwith someone who I don’t love, I gave my heart years ago tothe woman I am living with today… she is still the one whoowns it ”

KOUKI (  19 YEARS OLD- IN LOVE  ) “I simply believe in love because I am alreadyin love. I see my lover as the other half of me,the missing piece in my puzzle and the lastnote to my life song”

IMED ( 20 YEARS OLD  –   BREA-KING-UP ) “I don’t really believe in love because mostof girls aren’t serious and they become ‘ma-terialistic’; they are just running after men’spockets. I became convinced with this ‘truth’,after suering myself from a love story … Incase I get to love again, I would be a romanticlover: the kind who tells poetry…”

At last, we may say that love isan important ingredient of a re-cipe called life; it is the light thatappears to guide a lot of peopleto be the best version of them.I would advise those who arein a stable relationship to keepthat stability and avoid hurtingtheir partners .Those who lovesomeone and are ashamed or

afraid to reveal it; life is shortand no one knows what’s goingto happen, so just express yourfeelings before it will be reallylate. To those of you who aresingle or have ended a rela-tionship recently, I would rathersay, don't give up, you will ndyour soul mate eventually.

Bull Ring

The circle of spectators exploded into

eloquent chants. A chorus of voices thundered from

the throats of thousands of fans. A crescent of sun-

light shined glow fully on the yellow patch of dry

sand. In it, stood two fearful opponents – Taboth,

with rattling teeth – and angrily scratching the

earth, a ierce black Afrikaner bull.

  The days that followed were bad. Taboth`s mind

escaped from the harness of sanity and ran wild

into a land of confusion. He lay sickly in a hospitalbed. The stump of his leg puffed up angrily, drawing

the stitches so tight. It seemed they would tear out

of the swollen lesh. His body jerked in spasms like

a ish off hook.

  The trumpet for the third bull had been sounded

and Taboth was to ight this ferocious beast. Merely

a learner, he could barely gather courage. The doors

lung open, the attendant scampered for dear safety

and the bull bolted out like lightning, snorting like

a steam engine. His eyes burned brightly with rage

like twin ires of hell. 

With untamed bravery, the bull shot out spi-

ritedly, charging towards Taboth, his horns

held at an acute angle. The earth seemed to

tremble violently under his enormous weight.

Defenseless, Taboth could only mutter a little

prayer, awaiting his ruthless death.

  Next, the bull`s horns suddenly lodged them-

selves several centimeters into Taboth`s bellyand tossed him nine yards across the ring,

split his arm and trampled upon him. His eyes

felt like heavy anthracites. His vision blurred

and before he could recollect his nerves, he

fell unconscious.

  Many days later, he woke up in a double bed

in a hospital ward. Defeated with no grace nor

honor, grit nor help.

Youshould do the following: boilaround 1 cup of water, thenput grinded lupine in it and letit the whole morning. At night,strain the lupine, and use onlyits water on your hair. Massageit to your scalp for 10 minutes,and then let it on your hair thewhole night. In the morning,wash your hair and conditionit. Do this once or twice a weekfor 3-4 months, and you willget your long hair back again!

What is good

writing? 

Students, especially of language (s), often ask this

question without realizing that it is one of the most

intricate issues in the world of academia. In fact, even

researchers could not provide a full and clear answer

to such a tricky question. In this article, I will try to

shed some light on this problematic matter to help

students understand the general meaning of ‘good

writing’.

  In their book ‘ the writing process’, Hatcher

& Goddard state that “good writing is like lots of

other intangibles, like beauty or art- we can’t dene

it but we think we know it when we see it”. That

is, although it is very dicult and maybe impos-

sible to dene ‘good writing’, it is still possible to

distinguish it from poor writing because there is arange of qualities that help the reader dierentiate

between eective and bad writing. The following

is a brief account of four important traits of good

writing.

  According to scores of books, the majority

of specialists suggest four major criteria for iden-

tifying good writing, namely; clarity, conciseness,

correctness and organization. To explain more, cla-

rity, in writing, refers to the quality of being unders-

tandable to the readers without any diculty, while

conciseness denotes the act of expressing many

ideas in a few words. Correctness, on the other

hand, means that a given piece of writing is free of

dierent types of mistakes and conforms to some

standard of acceptability. Organization refers simply

to the way in which a set of ideas are arranged in

a given text for a particular purpose. Therefore, to

produce a relatively good piece of writing; student

should avoid vagueness, wordiness and incorrect-

ness.

Coherence and cohesion are, furthermore,

other crucial aspects of good writing. Coherence

in writing refers to the unity of the meaning of

sentences and paragraphs in a given text, while

cohesion denotes the unity of the text by means

of linguistic devices. In other words, coherence is

related to the connection of ideas and cohesion to

the connection of sentences.

 The abovementioned criteria are probably the most

important features of ‘good writing’ which student

writers should pay attention to when producing

any written material. So, dicult questions do havesimple answers and those who write well are cer-

tainly aware of the fact that simplicity is always the

best option.
