Car of the Future

Presented by : Ojas Sagroli & Wajid Ali Shahof St.Columba’s School

The Idea

• A Mid-sized SUV-crossover • Seating Capacity – 6• Ideal for city driving conditions your weekend

getaways• More enhanced, practical, and reliable hybrid

solution

Page 3: Future Cars PPT

Chassis

• A Monocoque construction • Light-weight aluminium-carbon fibre to keep

the kerb weight in check + Aid strength & stability.

Technical Aspects

• Power-unit shall be an electrical hybrid powertrain. Unlike a traditional hybrid the duties shall be reversed .

• In traditional hybrids the petrol + electric motor both work together .We propose an idea where the petrol unit only helps in recharging the electrical unit .

• Packaging -not an issue .Since size of petrol motor will be very small .Electric powertrain + petrol motor placed together at front

• Engine mounted transversely and the electrical unit packaged alongside

Page 5: Future Cars PPT

• Batteries stored under the floor-keeping the centre of gravity low--providing better driving dynamics-stability.

• Power shall be brought to the wheels via an automated-manual gearbox because only such a gearbox will be able to handle torque coming from the electric motor.

• We also propose the concept of controlled power distribution to all the 4 wheels of a car.

• The idea is that in normal driving mode the power shall go to the rear wheels only, however in a more demanding setting for an SUV while off-roading the the motor shall automatically channel power to all the 4 wheels independently so that the right amount of torque is being generated by the wheels at the right time for more grip in tricky situations

Page 6: Future Cars PPT

Advantages of Proposed Concept

• Since it is an electric unit, all the torque generated by the engine shall be available to the driver from 0 revs, so no lag in power delivery and the car will thrust forward in any gear at any engine speed with maximum power at all times.

Disadvantages + Solution

• Since only the electric motor is at work most of the time the range of the vehicle will be affected under hard driving.

• To improve this situation we propose the idea of brake-energy restoration system where the batteries get recharged every time the driver brakes or the car is coasting. So this way even if the driver is pushing the car to its limits the batteries will recharge quickly as well.

INTERIORS & SAFETY

• 3 rows of seats with 2 seats in each row• Individual chairs for each passenger instead of a

middle row bench which not only makes it hard to access the 3rd row of any modern SUV but doesn't offer much in the way of comfort for 3 people .

• Fully electrically adjustable individual chairs in all the 3 rows and sideways sliding middle row seats for easier access to the third row, the third row seats can be lowered slightly into the floor and then folded flat to provide a bigger luggage area in case you need it.

Page 9: Future Cars PPT

• Since all the functions inside the car will be electrically operated there is the need for an extra power source so that the electrically operated features don't hamper the range of the main power-unit. To counter this we propose the use of a solar panel on the roof which will charge an extra pair of batteries which will run a small motor placed lower in the boot so that all the lighting and electrical features can run on its power .

Page 10: Future Cars PPT

• This kind of interior packaging not only aids comfort but also gives us the liberty to package a car more efficiently and also enhances the safety factor.

• Since all the six seats are individual chairs and fully adjustable the use of seat-belts becomes mandatory even for middle and third row passengers which as of today is a rule flouted by most Indians if not all.

• We propose to use high-tech safety features in our design to aid safety and infotainment as well.

• The car will have sensors mounted all aroundto monitor every small detail about itself which the driver will be able to access through a touch-screen interface on the dashboard hence eliminating the need for too many buttons on the dashboard making it look more cleaner and uncluttered. This will also free up space for extra storage in the cabin which can be utilised .

Page 11: Future Cars PPT

• The driver will be able to choose from different driving modes and adjust various settings individually for the throttle response, suspension stiffness and gearbox ferosity .

• The car will come with the latest technologically advance safety features which will even connect with other cars on the road with similar technologies and therefore it will be able to communicate with different cars on the road and maintain a safe distance from every vehicle around leaving not too much for the driver to worry at the wheel in traffic conditions.
