President’s Message

Happy New Year! Welcome 2017! Please join me in welcoming our newest member! Tony Wilfley from Centennial, CO. Tony has Black 2003 convertible and he was referred to us by Brent Caswell. Welcome, Tony! Tony’s sister Vicky is already a member of the club, so we have had the pleasure of meeting Tony. Looking forward to seeing you at future club events. Are you wondering when your Membership renewal is due? You can look at the Membership Card that I send you in the mail each year when your dues are paid. Or, if you receive your newsletter in the mail, you can look at the mailing label on the back. Also, I mail re-minder statements and renewal forms at the beginning of the month that your renewal is due. So, if you misplace the reminder, you can find a current renewal form on our website, www.rmtbirds.com, by selecting the Membership link on the left. It is important to note that the current membership application and renewal forms are dated 7/2013. Please throw away any undated or out-of-date copies of the forms. The fees have changed, and the changes are not reflected on the older forms. I guess I really can’t say this enough, remember to wear your name tag at all club events. If you don't have a name tag, or, if you want to switch from a pin closure to a magnetic closure, or, if you just want the updated name tag style, please call me and I'll order one for you. There is an $11.00 charge for each name tag. See you at the Crock Pot Crazy Dinner! Pat Potter RMTC Membership Director

I want to start out THANKING everyone for all the support I received while I was going through my nose surgery and my congestive heart failure. The phone calls, cards, texts and visitations really helped lift my spirits knowing you all were there to support me. My congestive heart failure was caused by the reduction of my kidney function. I had to go on dialysis three times per week (MWF) to clean toxins and remove fluids (40 lbs so far) from my body. I feel like a different person and my energy level is increasing. THANKS AGAIN!! I want to THANK Jim Merritt for running the Dec. board meeting and the Holiday brunch at Mt Vernon Country Club. I have been told that he did a great job and that the 78 people in attendance had a great time. Barb told me that door prize ticket sales and donations to the Wildlife Animal Sanctuary totaled $350 (WOW). Another Thanks goes to the RMTC Officers and Directors for doing a great job during my absence. It is had to believe that 2016 is over and another exciting year is ahead. The 2016 year started out with the Crazy Crock Off (Jan), the lunch at White Fence Farms (Feb) and the tour of the Forney Museum with lunch at the Olive Garden (Mar) then mother nature decided to take over causing the cancellation of the March and April Mystery Cruises and the April tour of the Precious Child Facility. Finally the weather behaved and the RMTC could continue with it's planned events. We had several club events which included: a guided tour of the Pepsi Center, the Bird Bath to Mt. Rushmore, the annual picnic at Bear Creek State Park and the Holiday Brunch at Mt. Vernon. There were five Mystery Cruises to VMCCA Abbey Car Show in Canon City (May), the cruise to Loveland and Masonville (June), the Adam's County Museum (Aug), the Fall Colors Tour to Evergreen over Squaw Pass with lunch in Georgetown (Sept) and the drive to the Boulder CU Campus to tour the museum in the "Old Main" building. THANKS to the Harris's, Mue-hlbauer's and Stambaugh's for helping set up a Mystery Cruise. The RMTC drove cars in four Auctions including the Mecum Auction in July. THANKS to Ed Ryan for organizing the drivers for these money makers. The RMTC participated in the Highlands Ranch Parade (July), the Louisville Memorial Day Parade (Sept) and the Veteran's Day Parade in Longmont (Nov). Thanks to all that brought your T-Birds!! Finally, the RMTC participated in 10 local car shows: the Warbirds at Front Range Airport, the Urology Clinic Show, the Mike Naughton Show, the Havana Cruise, the Lincoln Meadow's Fathers Day Show, the Horsefeathers Show with the Early Mustang Club, the Frank's Pizza Show, the Landmark Lincoln Show, All Ford Day sponsored by the Early Ford Club and the Pumpkin Follies and Goat Show at Reinke Brothers. The RMTC had 29 events total in 2016. AGAIN THANKS to everyone that supported these events!! 2017 will be another eventful year with many exciting activities planned. The Crazy Crock Off is set for Jan 28th. This is always a well attended event so be sure to mark your calendars and plan on attending. The Officers and Board Members are currently planning the events for 2017. If you have an idea for an event or activity PLEASE let one of the Officers know or give me a call at 303-589-2232.

Looking forward to a NEW YEAR,

Don Reinke II RMTC President

ACCELERATOR LINKAGEThrottle support plate, throttle and kick down spring Over the years I have gotten many complaints from 1961-66 Thunderbird owners of a mushy gas pedal, they can not get the kick down to work, it lacks power, and/or the pedal is too close to the floor. Easily about 50% of the hundreds of Thunderbirds that I have worked on have this issue. Granted most of these were daily drivers and not show cars. What the problem? All 1961-66 Thunderbirds have a plate that supports the throttle bell crank and it is called the "throttle support plate," part number 9A853-A or -B. The throttle bell crank is part of the throttle linkage that bolts to the firewall behind the engine and passes through the firewall to the back side of the gas pedal. The throttle bell crank is bolted to the firewall but it is also supported up or rearward by the throttle support plate that is bolted to the transmission bell housing where it bolts to the motor in roughly about the 11 o'clock position looking at the back of the engine from the rear of the car. What happens is the throttle support plate is either missing or the throttle bell crank is positioned in front of the plate and not behind the plate like it should be. This is caused when the engine is removed, the trans is removed or someone is monkeying around with the throttle linkage and didn't position the parts back correctly. If the car is missing the throttle support plate, as so many are (or were back in the day when these were daily drivers), the throttle linkage will sag forward and the gas pedal will feel spongy, there will be very little pedal travel, the car won’t go very fast and you will loose your kick down (passing gear). A high percentage of Thunderbirds are missing this plate or the throttle bell crank is positioned wrong. The rubber bumper on the throttle bell crank fits behind (rearward) and "on" the throttle support plate. This pushes the throttle bell crank back towards the firewall and supports it into position. In some cases the throttle bell crank might find itself forward of the throttle support plate and you will get the same problem as if there were no plate. Many Thunderbirds that are missing the throttle support plate have modified, bent or cut throttle rods because the throttle linkage sags forward and the throttle and kick down rods are now too long and the mechanic didn't know what was wrong or how to deal with the problem so they modified the rods. If your mechanic has modified, cut or bent any throttle rod in an effort to get the throttle linkage to work, then you should know that something is dead wrong and this is probably the reason. Once the parts are in their correct positions, the throttle linkage can be adjusted properly and you will now have full throttle motion with the gas pedal. Throttle and kick down return springs The throttle return spring attaches to a unique spring plate that is bolted to the last intake manifold bolt on the back of the motor on the drivers side. The spring plate is slightly curved and has a hole on the bottom for the throttle spring. The spring plate is bolted to the engine so the spring hole is at its lowest position, below its retaining bolt. The short end of the throttle return spring attaches to the throttle spring plate. The long end of the spring attaches to the kick down adjusting rod attaching bolt where it is attached to the throttle bell crank rod. In-stalled correctly, the spring will sit vertically almost straight up and down. One end of the kick down return spring attaches to the kick down actuating lever bolted to the intake manifold behind the carbure-tor. The kick down rod that goes down to the transmission attaches to this actuating lever. The other side of the kick down spring attaches to a spring plate attached under the left rear carburetor retaining nut. This is the factory hook-up for these two springs. They are frequently hooked up wrong so check out your setup. Submitted by Nick Pepe [email protected]
