• UBI Research is an OLED research company founded in 2001.

• Headquartere in Seoul, Korea, we have offices in the United states, Japan, and China.

• There are also agencies in Taiwan and Japan.

• The business of UBI research consists of OLED report sales, OLED related consulting business,

conference, OLED professional media, OLEDNET.

• There are 10~15 types of OLED report annually.

• And we held 2 types of international conference in Korea: OLED Korea and Industry forum

High-speed OLED Market-1• Let me first tell you about the entire OLED market.

• OLED shipments are 5.35 million units with sales of 25 billion US$ this year.

• However, 5 years later, in 2021, it is a expected to grow to about 1.7 billion units shipment and 69

billion US $ market.

• You can see that the OLED market will increase very rapidly

• OLED is produced in four Asian countries including Korea.

• Currently, the OLED market is maintained by Korean companies, and their sales volume are expected

25 billion US$ this year.

• Five years later, 2021, Korean companies will have sales of 58 billion US $, and Chinese companies

expected to sell 8 billion $ OLED panel and module.

• OLEDs are produces in variety of sizes, but the flagship product that forms the market is the 4 to6

inch panel used in smartphones.

High-speed OLED Market-2• There are a lot of people who want to know about the market entry time and market size of the

foldable OLED smartphone. People who attend here are also expected to be very interested.

• So I checked Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display’s preparations for foldable OLED smartphone

for this presentation, but I do not see any mass production yet.

• As we expected in the OLED components and materials report for smartphone this year, we expect

foldable OLED smartphones to be released from 2019.

Market according to OLED structure• There are three types of OLED manufacturing methods.

• There are RGB OLED structure and WRGB OLED structure by evaporation method.

• Also there is RGB OLED structure manufacturing by ink-jet printing method.

• This year, the evaporation of RGB OLED market is worth 24 billion US $ and the WRGB OLED market

is 1.5 billion US $.

• It is only 6% of the total OLED market.

• There is no market for solution process OLED this year.

• Of course, JOED has announced that it will produce OLED monitors for the first time in the world as

a solution process, but market size is not at the level shown this figure.

Paradigm shift of TV market• From now on, I will talk about the past changes in the TV market and the future.

• When CRT was the main product of TV and monitor, 1995, LCD was able enter the market because

OFFICE by MS used white background.

• Since the LCD is based on a white background, normal white, the OFFICE program is more suitable

than a CRT.

• PDP entered the 40 inch TV market ahead of the LCD, but due to heavy metals and high power

consumption, it disappeared from the TV market in 2013.

• The reason why LCDs can compete in large-sized TV market is that the higher the resolution, the

more environmentally friendly that the PDP that consumes power.

• However, the emergence of OLED TV is very threatening the LCD TV market.

• OLED is a human-friendly product because it can implement a complete black and has a fast

response time.

Comparison of characteristic between OLED TV and LCD TV• This is a comparison of current technology of OLED TV and LCD TV.

• LCD TVs are still superior to OLEDs at price and resolution.

• However all other factors show excellent characteristics of OLED.

• Large size OLED panel for TV are made by only in LG display.

• And because OLED mass production technology of LG is still low compared to LCD, so it is expensive

to manufacture.

• That is, the yield is still low.

• For this reason, OLED TVs are used only as premium TV displays for over 2,000 US $.

• In the future, these two premium products will also compete in technology to improve color gamut.

OLED TV with hot issue at CES2017• It was OLED TV that became a top consumer electronics product at the CES exhibition.

• LG display unveiled a crystal sound OLED at the private showroom.

• The crystal sound OLED has an actuator on the back of the panel that can make sound on the panel.

• Sony exhibited BRAVIA OLED TV at CES2017, which was created as Sony’s own actuator technology in

OLED provided by LG display.

• The BRAVIA OLED and LCD TV show that there is a sharp difference in the picture quality on the right

side pictures.

Premium TV market forecast• The premium TV market of over 2,000 US $ is forecast to reach 6.7 million US$ this year.

• LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, and Sony are continuing to release high-price TVs, and it is

expected that the market will reach 8.9 million by 2020.

• In the premium TV market, the OLED market is still small.

• In 2015, the market share was only 9%, 400,000 units, and in 2016, 900,000 units were formed.

• This year, it is growing to 23% market share with 1.5 million units, however OLED TV is expected to

make 6 million market and increase 68% market ratio by 2020.

• From 2018, when BOE’s Gen10.5 mass production line is expected to operate, ≥ 65 inch TV is estimated to

dominate premium market.

• Accordingly, it is analyzed that panel companies should consider ≥ Gen10.5 investment or MMG (multi model on

a glass) at Gen8 to mass produce 65 inch panel.

• NHK has revealed 8K commercialization target for 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and 8K TV could also enter the market

from 2020.

• LG display also reviewed Gen 10.5 to mass produce 65 inch OLED panels.

• However due to lack of mass production technology, it is expected that LG display will be able to produce OLED

around 2020 after constructing Gen 10.5 LCD line.

OLED panel structure for TV• The reason why OLED panels for TVs are difficult to produce is in the WRGB OLED structure.

• On the left side picture, LG display has a 21 stacked OLED layers for TVs.

• The right OLED structure is Samsung display’s RGB OLED structure. It use the 14 layers.

• WRGB OLED structure is complicated compared to RGB OLED and its manufacturing process is 30% longer than

RGB’s.

• It is the reason why the yield of WRGB OLED is low.

Why is the solution process required for OLED manufacturing?• Due to manufacturing complexity of WRGB OLED, it seems difficult to reduce manufacturing cost for the time

being.

• In addition, WRGB OLED TV is difficult to get out of the premium market because the investment cost is too big.

• In order for OLED TV to penetrate into the middle-end market, a simple manufacturing process is required.

• Solution process RGB OLED with ink-jet can be solve the large-sized RGB OLED manufacturing problem of

deposition method.

• The merit of ink-jet technology reduce process number and investment cost, and increase material usuage.

• Thus solution process OLED can reduce production cost.

Solution process OLED structure and manufacturable resolution• Basically there are three kind solution process OLED structure.

• All-solution process is made by full ink-jet process from EIL to HIL.

• Ink-jet process uses between emitting layer to HIL in Hybrid structure.

• In super hybrid OLED process, blue layer is evaporation process.

• Anyway, 200 ppi resolution OLED with ink-jet can be made stable.

• It means ink-jet technology can make 4K and 8K 55 inch OLED panel.

Development status of solution process OLED• Many display companies are now developing solution process OLED.

• Among them AUO, BOE, and JOLED shown their technology recently.

• And JOED announced that it will begin mass production of solution process OLEDs.

• LG display has two Gen8 ink-jet machine for developing OLED panels, and Samsung display installed new Gen2

ink-jet machine.

• BOE is also installed Gen8 1/6 ink-jet machine.

Future TV market scenario• Currently, the premium TV market is composed of LCD and WRGB OLED TV.

• And the middle-end TV market is dominated by LCD TVs.

• However, after 2020, depending on the investment direction of LG display, the middle-end TV makert will

decide whether WRGB OELD or solution process OLED will enter the market.

Synergy of Ink-jet Technology in OLED• Ink-jet technology is also used in encapsulation for flexible OLED manufacturing.

• Samsung display uses ink-jet to manufacturing organic films for encapsulation.

Synergy of Ink-jet Technology in OLED• Thus, in large OLED panel manufacturing processes, the ink-jet technology can ne used for both pixel formation

and encapsulation.

• Currently produced bottom emission WRGB OLED of LG display is made by lamination of meal foil and organic

film.

• Ink-jet technology will become a key technology for transparent encapsulation to produce high luminance top

emission OLED in the near future.

OLED evolution-1• The initial OLEDs were PMOLEDs used in small devices under 2 inches.

• PMOLED has been developed through mono color, area color, and full color.

• With the development of LTPS-TFT performances and manufacturing technology, AMOLED has reached the

present stage.

• The improvement of the manufacturing technology of oxide TFT also has a great influence on the

commercialization of large OLED panel for TV.

• Now, sound crystal OLED has evolved.

• OLED picture quality is not affected by speaker vibration.

• So far, I have mentioned OLEDs in the past and present.

• So what will the future OLED and related products look like?

• First, the ink-jet technology and OTFT that are key factors in determining the future OLED appearance.

• Over 80 inch TVs are difficult to transport.

• People living in apartment has difficult putting 100 inch TVs at home.

OLED evolution-2• Humans have a very wide viewing angle.

• If a 2,000 $ 100 inch TV is sold, will not you buy it?

• The problem is how to make cheap 100 inch OLED panels and shipping methods.

• To solve both of these problems, flexible OLES, which can be manufactured and transported in roll form, are

indispensable.

• Of course, ink-jet technology is also required to lower manufacturing costs.

• Once these two technologies are completed, we will be able to have more than 100 inches of wall TV.

• Flexible OLEDs with very small radius of curvature can also be produced with a foldable OLED smartphone.

• In the near future, these two products will be in your pockets and home.

2020

1. In 2017, the OLED market is expected to reach 53.3 billion shipment and US $ 25 billion market

share. By 2021, the OLED market is expected to grow rapidly to 1.7 billion shipment and US $ 69

billion market.

2. The solution process OLED using ink-jet technology is expected to grow to 2.5% of the total

OLED market in 2021, worth US $ 1.7 billion.

3. Future TV will be a human-friendly OLED TV capable of achieving perfect black and white.

4. WRGB OLED manufactured by deposition technology has a complicated structure and high

investment cost, so a low-cost solution process OLED is required to replace the LCD market.

5. In the encapsulation part, it is possible to adopt ink-jet technology, so ink-jet technology can

become a key element technology in large OLED panel manufacturing.

6. And in the near future, flexible OLEDs will bring to the world a foldable OELD smartphone and a

100 inch rollable OLED wall TV.
