“I’D LOVE TO, but we just can’t” is a common answer to the question “Would you send your children to a private school?”. Yet, sending your bright kids to an independent school is more achievable than you’d imagine.

Decisions about children’s education are probably among the most important a parent will ever make. But independent education is an area wrapped up in myth and enigma that is shielding parents from the many options open to them. Independent school can often be dismissed out of hand as too expensive, too exclusive or too posh, but in reality it’s none of those. And the facts back it up. Time to bust a few myths.

The biggest question is, of course, money. But did you know that more than 5,000 pupils pay no money at all to attend independent schools? More than 40,000 children get means-tested help, and the average amount of assistance is £7,894. Overall a third of pupils in independent schools get help with fees. Even if means-tested help isn’t available, some schools charge less than £10,000 a year. Yes, some traditional boarding schools cost upwards of £30,000 but many boarding schools charge significantly less than this. And let’s remember than just one pupil in eight is a boarder. Day schools are, overwhelmingly, the most common way to educate children. But what an education!

Independent schools offer some of the most thrilling, innovative and stimulating environments for children. Great thinkers, leaders and business people have emerged from independent schools, and don’t expect them all to be from a well-heeled background. Nor do independent schools operate in a silo. 90% of independent schools work with local state schools for the benefit of everyone. Forward thinking teachers and heads have developed beneficial partnerships between schools, local community groups and charities. Three in ten pupils come from an ethnic minority and 5% of pupils are international students.

More and more parents are realising that

educating their children in small classes in independent schools is achievable. For example, there’s been a growth in under-10s educated in independent schools and a 5.1% increase in fee assistance – almost £40 million more than last year.

These figures have come from the Independent Schools Council (www.isc.co.uk) which is a great resource for all kinds of information about sending children to independent schools, and their blog is particularly informative. Alternatively, just call your nearest independent school, they’d be delighted to talk through the options.

Independent education is for families looking for a better future. Sacrifices are made by many parents, but it comes back to the most important thing in the family: the education of children. Next time someone asks if you’d send your children to a private school, be sure to have a look at the options first.

IN 1965 TRINITY SCHOOL, Croydon, moved to its present site from Croydon’s North End to make way for the Whitgift Shopping Centre. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its relocation to Shirley Park, Trinity has launched a campaign to fund 50 new bursaries.

Every year the School receives applications from pupils who meet the entrance criteria and who would thrive there but who, because of personal circumstances, are unable to accept their offer of a place. The new fund will ensure that the School can accommodate more of these pupils than ever before.

The campaign has already attracted donations

from a number of alumni, as well as past and present parents and staff, to the tune £425,250 to date. Headmaster, Mark Bishop, said: “I am very grateful to those who have already given and remain confident that we can meet our target and transform more lives for generations to come.”

Distinguished Trinity Old Boy, and Croydon- based entrepreneur, Dr Barry MacEvoy, said “Education should be needs blind, where tuition is available on the basis of ability and potential, not the capacity to pay.”

A LEVELS BEGIN to change from September 2015, with all exams taken at the end of a two year course. Smart revision tactics have never been more important.

Joe McManners joined Rochester Independent College having already achieved 10 A*s at GCSE and 3 A*s at A level in Maths, English Literature and History at Tonbridge School. Changing direction, in order to aim for medicine, he is now taking one year A level courses in Chemistry and Biology.

Joe says: “I tend work in silence when I’m rote (memorization technique based on repetition) learning, but if I find myself lagging, I’ll get out a bit of ‘Pendulum’ on my iPod and have a 5 minute burst to shake off the cobwebs. It’s really is effective and stops me drinking too much coffee! Sometimes, I’ll stand up and walk around the room incanting chemical equations to myself, so after 20 minutes or so I’ve learnt a whole portion of material.

A really good way to bring less engaging material to life is to work with a friend and run through the book together, asking each other quick-fire questions back and forth like a game of ping-pong. This way, by the time you come to sit down to the work, you are already familiar with the material – the neurological pathways have already been illuminated. It can be high-energy and is much easier than struggling away by yourself.

To keep on track I always write a timetable so I’ve defined my goal parameters for that evening’s work. To prevent distractions, when I’m ‘on’, the phone is ‘off’; Facebook updates, emails and texts I catch-up with during teabreaks. A good way to keep ‘in the zone’ is to go outside during rest times and get some fresh air: I tend to stand in the porch with a cup of tea. Or if it’s too cold outside, I’ll do a few press-ups, to get the blood flowing.

Whenever there’s something I don’t understand I get out my post-it notes and flag up the problem. I then go and see my one of my teachers after a lesson, who are all very happy discuss things.

So no stone is left unturned, and things that once seemed insurmountable boulders in the road looking back now seem more like pebbles.

Studying a complicated subject like Chemistry involves as much interfacing with the material as possible, so I study in the lunch queue and I study on the train. But it’s also good to get totally away from work at times and say, watch a game of rugby, or go to the gym – it’s fun and aids work by helping to keep you balanced.”

SPRING/SUMMER 201518

THE POINTER SCHOOL in Blackheath has just achieved the highest marks possible in their recent in depth inspection. The co-educational establishment in Stratheden Road swept the board with the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

A team of four professional teachers visited the school at the start of the Autumn Term as part of a four day statutory investigation into the state of the 64 year old primary school and nursery. Pupils’ work was scrutinized, parents were interviewed and a whole series of lessons were watched. The conclusion of the team was that the school was ‘excellent’ in every aspect. This is the highest grading that any school can achieve.

The Pointer School comprises 341 pupils from Nursery through to Year 6. Recent school leavers have gone on to a wide range of Independent Schools including Alleyns, James Allen Girls School and Eltham College.

Reacting to the report, Headmaster, Mr Robert Higgins said, “The trauma of a full inspection is never pleasant, nevertheless a result like this is a wonderful confirmation of what we do best; teaching and facilitating children to develop an enthusiasm about the wonderful world we live in.”

HEADS UP!MEET THE HEADS FROM SOME OF THE MOST RESPECTED SCHOOLS IN THE AREA…

Trinity is an independent school for boys aged 10–18 with a co-educational 6th Form. Our aim is to achieve excellence both inside and outside the classroom for every individual student. We have a reputation for being exceptionally caring but also very challenging so each boy and girl is able to fulfil his or her potential. The school is relaxed but dynamic; ambitious but not pretentious. Outstanding facilities, small class sizes and, above all, inspirational teachers combine to give students a learning experience that leads not only to academic excellence but also to the development of self-confidence, inter-personal skills and entrepreneurial qualities that prepare them for life beyond school.

At Old Palace every student enjoys a first class academic education. We promote a broader values-based education embracing four dimensions: service, skills and knowledge, courage and emotional intelligence. With this approach, students from a very young age start to learn about who they are and what they stand for.

Old Palace is blessed with a magnificent historical buildings, excellent facilities and an enthusiastic, highly motivated staff. For all who embrace the many opportunities presented, Old Palace will reward them with a happy, memorable and empowering education.

Breaside have been awarded ‘Outstanding’ across all areas, in October 2014. Children and staff are inspired to be part of the school’s great success. Breaside children are polite, well mannered and independent about their own learning. Breaside promotes confident individuals from a very early age. We have a dedicated team of staff who promote the school’s vision that if “children are happy, they are learning”. Our broad and balanced curriculum prepares your child for their senior schools of choice through a tailor made education, from their first days in the Kindergarten through to the age of 11.

INDEPENDENT & SELECTIVE SCHOOLS

Blackheath High School is an exceptional school, characterised by passionate teaching and a warm community atmosphere. In the classroom, our teachers provide the inspiration and individual support that enables students to make outstanding academic progress. Our girls are outward looking and adventurous; participating in a rich array of co-curricular activities that encourage risk-taking and are encouraged to broaden their horizons and cultivate international-mindedness through community projects and expeditions. Blackheath girls have confidence, principles and character. There is no such thing as a ‘typical Blackheath girl’ and that is for good reason. This is a school where individuality is cherished and there is a culture of high expectations and open-mindedness.

IN RECENT YEARS, technology has significantly altered the way we communicate through writing. At Bromley High Junior School, we know that our girls have grown up with a wealth of technology. As part of our progressive pedagogy we work hard to integrate what is familiar in their homes and the world around them.

In the wider world, correspondence is now predominantly directed through emails and texts and keyboarding skills could be seen as taking precedence over pencil skills. In our school, we believe that the link between writing by hand and learning is of great significance to our girls in the early stages of their development. For us, handwriting continues to be a primary tool of communication and knowledge assessment.

Handwriting at Bromley High is about developing a desire to communicate through mark making from an early age and is much more than a paper and pencil exercise. It is a movement skill that improves as each girl develops increased control and coordination over her body in both fine and gross motor skills. The teaching and learning of basic letter formation is firmly embedded in our curriculum with a joined script being taught from the beginning of Reception. We recognise the importance of a consistent style of handwriting throughout the school and the need for all staff to consider themselves as teachers of handwriting, with a clear understanding of the progression of skills. Attention is given to the positive correlation between handwriting, reading, and spelling skills using a multi-sensory approach to help reinforce early achievement across these areas. Early handwriting instruction ensures our girls successfully produce legible, joined writing, at speed and with minimum conscious effort as they progress into Key Stage 1. When handwriting becomes instinctive, there is time to focus on the higher-level aspects of composition and content.

In our progressively digital environment, handwriting continues to be a tool that is used in many curriculum subjects from classroom tasks such as taking notes and completing tests, through to homework. Neat, well-formed handwriting and presentation of written work has a profound effect on individual performance as it encourages a sense of pride, ownership and personal identity.
