4 FX Input/Output (I/O) Modules – XM07 and XM14

The FX Input/Output (I/O) Modules (XMs) provide additional physical input and output points for FX16X Master Controllers in the Facility Explorer range of products. The modules extend the capability of the connected FX16X Master Controller to monitor and control additional points within its control application. The modules do not perform control functions (see Figure 1).

The FX I/O Module Series also includes models with manual overrides for a number of the analog, relay, and triac outputs. The manual override function is always active when power is applied to the module. The manual override function does not depend on communication with the FX16X Master Controller.

Both support a wide range of temperature sensors and actuating devices. Active sensors for the measurement of humidity, pressure, and other variables are also supported as well as digital (binary) inputs.

The modules communicate with an FX16X Master Controller over its local link bus.

Using the FX Tools software package, you can fully configure and program the FX16X Master Controller and its connected FX I/O Modules for a wide range of commercial Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) applications.

Features The features of the FX Input/Output Modules include:

• expansion of the input and output capability of FX Field Controllers (only FX16X controllers are supported in the first release)

• fully programmable modules as an integral part of the application for the FX16X Master Controller using FX Tools software package

• 18 physical inputs and outputs including relays and triacs, with four digital output overrides and two analog output overrides (XM07 module)

• 31 physical inputs and outputs including relays and triacs, with seven digital output overrides and three analog output overrides (XM14 module)

More than one disconnect or isolation may be required to completely de-energize equipment. Contact with components carrying hazardous voltage can cause electric shock and may result in severe personal injury or death.

! WARNING: Risk of Electric Shock. Install the XM07 or XM14 Modules in an environment relatively free of contaminants like dust, condensation, or chemical agents. A dirty or damp environment may cause an electric arc across contaminated terminals.

IMPORTANT: Do not use the manual override switches for operations concerning the safety or emergency isolation of monitored and controlled equipment. The output relays of the XM module are controlled by firmware-driven electronic circuits and not directly by the manual override switches.

IMPORTANT: Use this XM07 or XM14 input/output module only as an operating control. Where failure or malfunction of the XM07 or XM14 module could lead to personal injury or damage to the controlled equipment or other property, additional precautions must be designed into the control system. FX Input/Output (I/O) Modules – XM07 and XM14 25

To configure the local link communication card:

1. Remove power from the module and isolate all high-voltage connections to the module for safety purposes.

2. Remove the cover of the module. For the XM07 module, this normally requires that you release the module from the DIN rail to gain access to the tabs that hold the cover to the base. For the XM14 module, remove the cover by releasing the two screws securing the cover.

IMPORTANT: The Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuits in the module and on the communication card are sensitive to static voltage discharges. Take suitable precautions.

3. On the upper DIP switch block (S2), set Switch 1 as follows:

0 = Baud Rate and Local Link (N2) Address set on DIP switches

Note: The XM modules do not support a local display.

4. Set the Baud Rate on switches 4-3-2.

Note: For N2 communication with the FX16X Master Controller, you must select the baud rate at 9600 (factory default setting).

5. Set the Local Link (N2) Address on the lower DIP switch block (S1) in binary format (1 = ON). Examples are:

8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 = N2 Address 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 = N2 Address 3 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 = N2 Address 129 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 = N2 Address 255

Note: The address must correspond to the address assigned to the XM module in the FX16X Master Controller software application. The factory default address is 1.

6. Replace the module cover and remount the XM07 module onto the DIN rail, or secure XM14 module cover with the two screws.

7. Restore power to the module and reconnect any inputs and outputs that were isolated for safety purposes.

IMPORTANT: If changing the Local Link (N2) Address during a bench test with power applied to the module, cycle the power for a new address to become active in the module.

Page 26: FX Input/Output (I/O) Modules – XM07 and XM14 Technical Bulletincgproducts.johnsoncontrols.com/MET_PDF/12011455.pdf · 2014. 6. 9. · Input/Output Technical Details ... program

26 FX Input/Output (I/O) Modules – XM07 and XM14

Connecting the Local Link (N2 Open) Communication Card The XM module cover indicates the Local Link terminals as 1, 2, 3. Connect to the Local Link Bus (RS-485 N2 Open) as shown in Table 4. The connections are polarity sensitive and must be made correctly. If the bus cable has a shield, twist or connect the shields of the incoming and outgoing cables and insulate the exposed metal wires with tape. If the shield is used as the COM wire, connect it to Terminal 1.

30 FX Input/Output (I/O) Modules – XM07 and XM14

Detailed Inputs and Outputs Procedures Universal Inputs

The Universal Inputs accept a wide range of analog input signals, either passive or active, as configured in the related Analog Input object in the FX16X Master Controller application using FX Builder. The Universal Input also accepts a potential-free contact input when configured as a Digital Input in the FX16X Master Controller application.

The voltage outputs from the XM07 or XM14 module can supply +15 VDC at 80 mA (total) for active sensors, and +5 V at 20 mA (total) for ratiometric sensors. This may limit the number of active sensors that can be powered by the module. Check the sensor current consumption data before connecting any device.

The ranges of active sensor (voltage and current) inputs are set in configuration parameters within the FX16X Master Controller application software using FX Builder. The HighRange and LowRange parameters define the equivalent values for reading at high (10 V, 20 mA, 4.5 V) and low (0 V, 4 mA, 0.5 V) signal inputs. Voltage inputs from differential pressure transducers can be linearized by a square root function (SQRT), which operates over the complete range of the input.

The passive sensor (resistance) inputs have pre-configured linearization characteristics within the application software. For these sensors, the measurement range is fixed, but you can set the reliability range in software.

The input signal is converted by the XM module according to the related Analog Input object setup configuration. The setup possibilities include the following:

• A99 temperature sensor

• PT1000 Standard and Extended Range temperature sensors

• Ni1000(Johnson Controls) temperature sensor

• Ni1000 Extended (Johnson Controls) temperature sensor

• Ni1000 Siemens (Landis+Gyr) temperature sensor

• Ni1000 DIN temperature sensor

• NTC 2.2k temperature sensor

• NTC 10k temperature sensor

• Ratiometric (0.5 4.5 V)

• linear 0-10 V

• linear 4-20 mA

• digital (binary) input from a potential-free contact

Page 31: FX Input/Output (I/O) Modules – XM07 and XM14 Technical Bulletincgproducts.johnsoncontrols.com/MET_PDF/12011455.pdf · 2014. 6. 9. · Input/Output Technical Details ... program

FX Input/Output (I/O) Modules – XM07 and XM14 31

The measurement unit of the analog value also enables the FX16X Master Controller with its XM modules to transmit the measured value via the network in the appropriate format. Available configurable units include the following:

• temperature

• percentage

• air pressure

• liquid pressure

• flow

• voltage

A configurable filter object is available in the FX16X Master Controller application software for each Analog Input object to reduce signal instability. You can configure an additional anti-spike filter to limit the rate of change of the input value.

Connecting Passive Resistive Sensors The XM07 and XM14 modules provide the power source and linearize the signals from Resistive Temperature Device (RTD) sensors connected to universal inputs to provide a reading in temperature units.

You must configure the analog input object to accept the correct passive sensor type in the control application software loaded into the FX16X Master Controller.

Figure 22 shows the connection between an XM module and a passive resistive sensor.

UIn

XM07/XM14 Passive Sensor (RTD)

Figure 22: A99 Resistive Sensor Connection

IMPORTANT: The two passive sensor leads have no polarity; therefore, it is not necessary to respect any specific order when connecting to the terminal block.

Connecting Active 0-10 V and 4-20 mA Sensors The XM module accepts active temperature, pressure, flow, humidity, and other sensors that provide a voltage signal in the range 0-10 VDC, or a current signal in the range 4-20 mA.

Figure 23 displays the connection between an XM module and a 0-10 V sensor powered by the module at 15 VDC.

Digital Inputs The digital (binary) inputs accept potential-free contacts.

The Digital Input object in the FX16X Master Controller application software provides the interface between the hardware digital input channel and the control logic. A digital input is logically active (true) depending on its polarity setting. The default setting is Normally Open or Direct. This means the input is active (true) when the contact is closed. The LED indicator can be set to show red or green when the input is true. You can set the parameters in FX Builder.

Connecting the Transition Counter Input The XM07 and XM14 modules feature a transition counter on one or more of the digital inputs that samples a pulse signal at 50 Hz maximum, with a minimum ON time of 10 ms, and a minimum OFF time of 10 ms.

The Input Counter object in the FX16X Master Controller application software provides the interface between the digital input, acting as a transition counter, and the control application.

Page 34: FX Input/Output (I/O) Modules – XM07 and XM14 Technical Bulletincgproducts.johnsoncontrols.com/MET_PDF/12011455.pdf · 2014. 6. 9. · Input/Output Technical Details ... program

The totalized value is stored in nonvolatile memory during a power interruption to the FX16X Master Controller, and retrieved by the object after power restoration. Any pulses during the power interruption are not counted.

For example, the transition counter counts the number of times an item of equipment is started.

For informational purposes and energy management, you can also use the transition counter as a totalizer for energy consumption measurement. For primary energy billing applications, a separate utility meter approved by local authorities is normally required.

Analog Outputs You can configure the analog outputs as 0-10 VDC (each at 10 mA maximum), or PWM (100 Hz). The Analog Output object provides the interface between the hardware Analog Output channel and the control application.

You can configure the analog outputs for direct- or reverse-acting in the application software. You can limit by high limit (MaxOutput) and low limit (MinOutput) values.

An analog output can be overridden and its value modified via a supervisory system if the control application is configured for this feature. On an XM module with manual override controls, the analog output can be set into manual override mode and its value set by a hardware dial. The manual override has priority over the control application and a supervisory system override, and the manual override status can be monitored by the control application for transmission to the supervisory system.

Connecting the 0-10 V Analog Output The analog outputs are commonly used to drive proportional devices and can be connected to drive any of the Johnson Controls® proportional valve actuators. See Figure 27.

Digital Outputs Digital (binary) outputs are available as relays with heavy or pilot duty, or as triacs, according to the model.

The Digital Output object in the FX16X Master Controller application software provides the interface between the hardware digital output channel and the control application. You can set the parameters in FX Builder.

A digital output can be overridden and its value modified via a supervisory system if the control application is configured for this feature. On an XM module with manual override controls, the digital output can be set into manual on or manual off override mode by a hardware switch. The manual override has priority over the control application and a supervisory system override, and the manual override status can be monitored by the control application for transmission to the supervisory system. An amber LED indicates the manual on status (in place of the green LED in automatic mode).

The Digital Output object for the XM module only provides the On/Off Output mode.

Connecting the Relays

! WARNING: Risk of Electric Shock. Disconnect or isolate all power supplies before making electrical connections. More than one disconnect or isolation may be required to completely de-energize equipment. Contact with components carrying hazardous voltage can cause electric shock and may result in severe personal injury or death.

The XM module features digital outputs with electromechanical relays. See Technical Specifications for details on the number of relays and ratings.

Each relay contact has a separate common terminal. Each relay also has double isolation between the contact and the relay coil and between contacts of adjacent relays. Having a separate common terminal and double isolation allows the connection of the relays to reach different voltage supply sources. See Figure 30.

Operation

Operation Concepts User Interfaces – LEDs and Manual Override

The XM07 and XM14 modules have LED indication on all digital (binary) inputs and all digital (binary) outputs.

Manual overrides are provided on analog and digital outputs as follows:

• XM07 - manual override on two analog and four digital outputs with LED indication

• XM14 - manual override on three analog and seven digital outputs with LED indication

The manual overrides operate as long as power is applied to the module and take priority over any command from the FX16X Master Controller application or supervisory system.

The manual override requires no configuration in the controller application except for the monitoring of the manual override status.

Supervisory Link – FX16X Master Controller Local Link You must define the configuration of the XM modules in the control application of an FX16X Master Controller. The Supervisory Link of the XM module connects to the Local Link bus of the FX16X Master Controller, which uses the RS-485 physical network and the N2 protocol. You can then integrate the FX16X Master Controller into a supervisory building automation system for continuous monitoring of the control system, including the XM modules. Three methods of integration at the FX16X Master Controller level are supported:

• N2 Open

• LONWORKS® Twisted Pair/Free Topology (TP/FT-10)

• BACnet® Master-Slave/Token-Passing (MS/TP)

Application Configuration and Commissioning The XM module design is based on the object-oriented architecture of the FX platform that includes configurable input and output objects. You can create control applications that include XM modules, download them into the FX16X Master Controller, and commission the FX16X Master Controller and its connected XM modules using the FX Tools software package.

The tools available in the FX Tools software package are:

• FX Builder: Use FX Builder to program and configure Facility Explorer controllers and FX I/O Modules using menus, navigation trees, and screens. The application configuration includes the definition of the controllers and modules to be connected, the physical inputs and outputs and data points to be monitored, and the format of the FX16X Master Controller user interface display screens and navigation.

• FX CommPro N2/LON/BACnet: Use FX CommPro N2/LON/BACnet to download and commission Facility Explorer controllers and FX I/O Modules with parameter configuration for control sequence and loop tuning. Three versions of the FX CommPro tool support FX16X Master Controllers on N2 Open, LONWORKS, and BACnet protocol networks.

Application Download You can download applications that include XM module configuration data into the connected FX16X Master Controller. The FX16X Master Controller then communicates with the defined XM modules in the application over its local link bus. You do not have to download any data to the XM module directly.

Digital Input LEDs You can configure each digital input LED in the software application to illuminate green or red when the contact is open or closed. Green is normally used for a status indication, and red is used for an alarm condition.

Digital Output LEDs Digital output LEDs illuminate green when the output (relay contact or triac) is closed and the manual override switch (if present) is in the auto position.

For outputs with a manual override switch, the LED illuminates amber when the switch is in the manual on position.

Manual Override on Analog Outputs IMPORTANT: Do not use the manual override switches for operations concerning the safety or emergency isolation of monitored and controlled equipment. The output relays of the XM module are controlled by firmware-driven electronic circuits and not directly by the manual override switches.

Manual overrides are provided on analog outputs as follows:

• XM07 - manual override on two analog outputs (AO1, AO2)

• XM14 - manual override on three analog outputs (AO1, AO2, AO3)

Each output has a dial marked 0…10 with a push function to enable and disable the manual override mode, which is indicated by an amber LED.

Manual Override on Digital Outputs IMPORTANT: Do not use the manual override switches for operations concerning the safety or emergency isolation of monitored and controlled equipment. The output relays of the XM module are controlled by firmware-driven electronic circuits and not directly by the manual override switches.

Manual overrides are provided on digital outputs as follows:

• XM07 - manual override on four digital outputs (DO1 – DO4)

• XM14 - manual override on seven digital outputs (DO1 – DO7)

Each output has a three-position switch labeled on-auto-off (I A 0). In the on position, the digital output LED illuminates amber to indicate that you have overridden the output to the closed state.

Note: The manual overrides operate as long as power is applied to the module and take priority over any command from the FX16X Master Controller application or supervisory system.

Note: The manual override requires no configuration in the controller application except for the monitoring of the manual override status.

Supervisory Link - FX16X Master Controller Local Link The Supervisory Link of the XM07 and XM14 modules is equipped with an RS-485 N2 Open communication card that you connect to the Local Link bus of an FX16X Master Controller. You can then integrate the FX16X Master Controller into a supervisory building management system for continuous monitoring of the control system. The FX16X Master Controllers support three methods of integration:

• N2 Open network

• LONWORKS TP/FT-10 network

• BACnet MS/TP network.

Refer to the Supervisory Link section of the Technical Bulletin of the FX16X Master Controller that you are using for details of the network connections and capabilities.

Application Configuration and Commissioning FX Builder You can program and configure the XM modules using the menus, navigation trees, and graphic screens of FX Builder. FX Builder is part of the FX Tools Pro software package. The XM module configuration is part of an FX16X Master Controller application that includes the definition of the physical inputs and outputs of the FX16X Master Controller and the XM modules.

You generate applications in a graphic screen environment with features that help you build the application quickly and accurately. The applications are built from standard function modules and control objects that nest in custom assemblies and can be saved for reuse in other applications. FX Builder offers complete flexibility in the generation of custom applications, and has features that enable reuse of existing assemblies and standard applications where appropriate for an economic solution.

The configuration includes the definition of the control logic and data point values to be monitored for supervisory, commissioning, and servicing functions, and the format of the user interface displays.

You can define the communication parameters for supervisory functions and event messaging in FX Builder. You can also define user profiles with passwords to protect the FX16X Master Controller and its XM modules from unauthorized access. You also generate and configure trend logs and time schedules for the FX16X Master Controller in FX Builder.
