Oh How We’ve Grown... In the 15 years the AdVenture program has been with Boise Parks & Recreaon Department we’ve see the parcipaon num- bers increase over 751%! This just shows how important adapve recreaon is to individuals with disabilies and their fami- lies. Without your support these numbers would not be growing like they are. In Fiscal Year ’12 the AdVenture Seeker program was able to offer more programs specifically designed for individuals with physical disabilies. Through the Seekers, we now offer bike rides, raſting, waterskiing, wheelchair basketball, rugby and a ‘Fly In’ camping trip. Also this year we put Boise on the map as the first city in Idaho that offers the sport of wheelchair rugby thanks to a $23,400 grant from the U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Commiee, through funding provided by Veterans Affairs. The popularity of this sport has been incredible. The current wheelchair rugby players are dedicated to grow- ing this sport and they constantly recruit new players. On a personal note, combined, we have been with the City for 17 years and we cannot believe how much support we have seen from the community. It sll amazes us the generosity of all of our volunteers, donors and staff. When the AdVenture program moved from Boise State University to Boise Parks & Recreaon back in 1997 there were two full-me staff, a handful of volunteers and no part-me employees. We sll have only two full-me staff but now we rely on over 23 part-me staff, a student intern, a Service Learning student from BSU and over 175 volunteers. We cannot express how grateful we are for all of our staff, donors, partners and volunteers. Thank you for all you do for the AdVenture program! We look forward to working with you in the future. Oh How We’ve Grown...

In the 15 years the AdVenture program has been with Boise Parks & Recreation Department we’ve see the participation num-bers increase over 751%! This just shows how important adaptive recreation is to individuals with disabilities and their fami-lies. Without your support these numbers would not be growing like they are.

In Fiscal Year ’12 the AdVenture Seeker program was able to offer more programs specifically designed for individuals with physical disabilities. Through the Seekers, we now offer bike rides, rafting, waterskiing, wheelchair basketball, rugby and a ‘Fly In’ camping trip. Also this year we put Boise on the map as the first city in Idaho that offers the sport of wheelchair rugby thanks to a $23,400 grant from the U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, through funding provided by Veterans Affairs. The popularity of this sport has been incredible. The current wheelchair rugby players are dedicated to grow-ing this sport and they constantly recruit new players.

On a personal note, combined, we have been with the City for 17 years and we cannot believe how much support we have seen from the community. It still amazes us the generosity of all of our volunteers, donors and staff. When the AdVenture program moved from Boise State University to Boise Parks & Recreation back in 1997 there were two full-time staff, a handful of volunteers and no part-time employees. We still have only two full-time staff but now we rely on over 23 part-time staff, a student intern, a Service Learning student from BSU and over 175 volunteers. We cannot express how grateful we are for all of our staff, donors, partners and volunteers.

Thank you for all you do for the AdVenture program! We look forward to working with you in the future.

Respectfully,

HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2012

A total of $9,929.77 was donated to the AdVenture program. All money will go towards AdVenture scholarships, unless specified:

Idaho Power and their Employees donated $960.

$3,738 was raised during the ChairHoops Wheelchair Basketball Tournament

$2,907 was raised during the Curt Recla Moonlight Golf Tournament.

$525 was donated by individuals to either the AdVenture scholarship account or the Idaho Youth Wheelchair Sports Camp.

Cecil Andrus Elementary School donated $200 for Ability Team Assemblies.

A doctor who is considered a ‘medical witness’ donated $1,600 that he received in payment from one of his court cases.

Since FY 2000, we have raised over $85,400 from our fundraisers.

We received a $23,400 grant from the United States Olympic Committee to start the Paralympic sport of Quad Rugby. The grant enabled us to purchase 11 new and used rugby chairs.

We received a $1,000 grant from Idaho Power to go towards the Ability Team Assemblies.

The Ability Team offered five assemblies in FY ’12. These assemblies provided disability awareness to over 1,904 elementary age students in Boise and Meridian.

Four area businesses paid $500 to sponsor a team for the Idaho Youth Wheelchair Sports Camp. The businesses were: Sawtooth Orthotics and Prosthetics, Idaho Urologic Institute, Saint Alphonsus- Idaho Spasticity Program, and Idaho Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Cumulatively in FY ’12, 59 area businesses donated prizes for the two AdVenture fundraisers and the AdVenture Holiday Party. The donations have an estimated value of $3,898.

A Teen Summer Camp was offered for the fourth year in 2012. This is a week long day-camp for teens ages 13-17 with disabilities. Due to parent’s requests, we increased the length of the camp from eight weeks to ten weeks.

Scholarships continue to be offered to adults and youth with disabilities to help pay for BPR classes or programs. Participants may receive $250/year. In 2012, over $10,700 was spent on scholarships for adults with disabilities. This is approximately the same amount that was spent in FY 2011.

Our summer intern, Jon Vidovic, from Illinois State University, completed a 14 week Therapeutic Recreation internship with our program. This internship meets the strict guidelines from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.

USOC GRANT

In FY ’12, the AdVenture program was awarded $23,400 from the U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, through fund-ing provided by Veterans Affairs. The grants were provided to facilitate the growth of Paralympic sport pro-gramming for disabled Veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces. We used the money to pur-chase equipment for the sport of wheelchair rugby.

Aside starting a new Paralympic sport in the Treasure Valley, several highlights also occurred due to this grant:

We obtained our goal of offer-ing this opportunity to 10 Veterans.

When this grant was written, we stated that we would hold eight practices during the winter months which would equate to a total of 24 hours. However, in FY ‘12, we far exceeded that and conducted 63 practices which resulted in 157.5 hours of wheelchair rugby.

This grant enabled the "Boise Bomber" semi-professional rugby team to exist. Without this grant, there would not be a semi-professional team in Idaho. Prior to this grant, there were no opportuni-ties in Idaho for wheelchair rugby, this program has changed lives.

Two semi-professional teams from Utah and Oregon traveled to Boise to play this sport against the Boise Bombers. This gives our local athletes the chance to compete at a higher competition level.

This past summer, a 23 year old male with a Spinal Cord Injury trav-eled two plus hours (each way) from Burley to Boise every Thursday to play wheelchair rugby.

We were able to introduce rug-by to the youth involved with the Idaho Youth Wheelchair Sports Camp.

FUNDRAISING PROFITS

As always, volunteer support is vital to our program. Last year, there were 175 volunteers who donated a total of 3,254 hours for AdVenture. For the purposes of this report, we are using an hourly wage of $15.57/hour. The wage is the 2009 Independent Sector hourly value for volunteer services in the state of Idaho, and is the most recent value available. Using this figure, volunteers donated $50,665 worth of services for AdVenture in FY ’12.

The programs with the most volunteer support were:

Idaho Youth Wheelchair Sports Camp – 1,604 hours

Student Internship – 560 Hours

Rafting – 196 Hours

Classes (Fitness, Dance, Drumming and Cooking) – 174 Hours

Waterskiing – 110 hours
