Staff at kitchen manufacturers Magnet have collected NVQs in warehousing and storage, after studying with Darlington College.

The course includes health and safety issues, standard operating procedures and working relationships, in a sector which is the second biggest growth industry after retailing. Darlington College has been working with Magnet for the past two years delivering a range of flexible training on site fitting in with shift patterns. The qualification is designed to boost efficiency, ensure the safety of staff; provide workers with a nationally recognised qualification and a set of transferrable skills which will boost their career prospects.

Magnet stock controller Dave Nelson said “It was a really good course and I felt I learned a lot. It will help us in our day to day work and it has made me much more aware of a range of possible hazards. The company does place a lot of emphasis on training which is great for us all.” Logistics process improvement manager Kevin Jones, added: “This NVQ can be used to good effect on the shop floor but it can also help staff move up the career ladder as it shows commitment and a keen interest in the job.”

Cleveland College of Art and Design has joined forces with the Craft Council, the nation’s biggest craft organisation, in an initiative known as Hothouse North.

The scheme supports up and coming designers who have either graduated within the past two years or set up their own business. The designers receive a six month programme of intensive business skills and creative development which also includes one to one support as well as the opportunity for essential networking with contacts in the industry.

CCAD’s business development manager Melanie Shee said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to be working with the Craft Council to develop partnerships with other industry-led organisations in the North. It is great to think that the Craft Council is looking to us for our expertise.”

National specialist care home provider Potens has put in motion a significant programme of training to be delivered by Redcar & Cleveland College.

At least 70 staff from the Potens group will attend over 300 short courses.

This will help the specialist care home provider meet both business and staff needs and focus on areas that include Challenging Behaviour, Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, Care Planning, Nutrition, Epilepsy Awareness and Health & Safety.

Claire Vowles, Home Manager at Potens, said: “The approach adopted by the College has given us great confidence to establish a long-lasting partnership. This comprehensive and tailored training will ensure service users continue to receive effective and compassionate care, whilst staff will develop their capabilities and the business will be helped to meet its objectives.”

PD Ports has joined forces with Middlesbrough College to deliver a set of training programmes, which will aim to further improve the Company’s already impressive health and safety record, as well as enhance leadership and management skills at Teesport.

Starting in spring 2012, the programme, involving over 70 staff members, will be delivered over a two year period. Once completed, employees will achieve an Institute of Leadership and Management NVQ up to Level 5, as well as an IOSH Managing in the Workplace or NEBOSH Certificate.

Mike Hopkins, Middlesbrough College’s Chief Executive, added: “Middlesbrough College is very proud to be delivering management and health and safety training for such a prestigious company”.

David Robinson, PD Ports’ Group Chief Executive Officer, added: “As we move into 2012, we are looking to engage with the wider industrial community on Teesside to further collaborate on issues such as training and skills, and deliver greater prospects or work, employability and skills development in the area.”

>Success Story:inspectors praise industry relevant training SToCKTon riVErSiDE CollEgE

Stockton Riverside College (SRC) has been praised by the schools and colleges watchdog for making training relevant to industry.

A report, produced by Ofsted in February, says the college uses ‘local labour market information effectively to design relevant short, flexible employability courses’.

Wilton based pallet recovery business RPS has recently benefitted from such a course, gaining staff qualifications in performing manufacturing operations, which was delivered in the workplace.

Owen Hines, RPS General Manager, said: “Having skilled, well-trained staff is vital for any business and never more so than in today’s challenging economic climate. The training was tailored to match the actual operating processes performed in the depot, this proved to be invaluable.”

SRC also highlighted the availability of additional funding, which RPS used towards further staff training. They are currently discussing introducing an apprenticeship scheme.

Mr Hines added: “I’d definitely recommend SRC to other businesses.”

Blaydon based Tegrel Limited saw an opportunity to work with Hartlepool College of Further Education to equip their whole shop floor operatives with a Level 2 in Performance Manufacturing Operations and requested the College to develop and deliver a suitable training programme to up-skill their business and support workforce. The company’s management team recognised there was an opportunity to strengthen the tender process by having the whole workforce accredited with a recognised qualification.

Andrew Steel, Assistant Principal at the College said “The programme has been delivered on a flexible part time basis to suit the needs of the business ensuring staff would learn with a theory classroom approach as well as demonstrating and applying their skills in the workplace.”

Simon Watts, Tegrel Operations Manager said “The broad topics covered by the various modules of the training meant that all employees gained a greater understanding of what factors are important in an effective business as a whole rather than just what happens in their own area.”
