Crystal Tyson, FYI Coordinator

At what age does your child get too old to hang out with the “little kids”? Quite often I hear my children say there is nothing to do or that they are bored. The opening of the Fort Gordon Teen Center has changed all that.

The Fort Gordon Teen Center has always been committed to providing quality programming for youth in grades 6-12. It has been a place where teens can go for a safe environment or to simply stay occupied in a positive light – providing ease to the minds of many parents. Until now, there just wasn’t enough space for this great group. On January 20th, the Teen Center opened its doors to over 110 registered CYSS tweens and teens!

There are numerous activities that youth can participate in at this facility. The center is in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA) and 4-H Club. Most of the programming is through the BGCA

Curriculum, covering four service areas daily: Sports and Fitness, Life Skills & Citizenship, Arts & Leisure and Academic Support. Clubs utilize each room in the facility to maximize the potential of our youth.

There is a state-of-the-art, fully functional computer lab, a teen lounge for 9th-12th grade, a middle school lounge for 6th-8th grade, a full-court high school regulation basketball court, a homework lab, a music room with a sound booth and a fully functional kitchen.

Some of the clubs include the Keystone Club, which is an organized leadership program for youth ages 14-18 interested in community service, leadership & development, education & career exploration and social recreation. Torch Club is a program for youth ages 11-13 interested in community service, education, health & fitness and social recreation. Smart Moves is a program

FACILITY FOCUS

Page 9: FYI Magazine - Spring 2015

WWW.FORTGORDON.COM | 7

that encourages positive behaviors, health, well-being and personal success of the youth. 4-H Club is a youth development program that promotes “learning by doing.” Monthly business meetings and weekly 4-H projects are conducted. Other clubs include photography, technology, citizenship, art and cooking classes.

The Teen Center offers an after-school program as well as a busing service from select middle and high schools within the area. The Open Gym hours are 2-7pm Monday-Friday and 12:30-7pm on Saturday.

Although this is a free facility for teen to use during open gym hours, there are day-camps that you can pay for with even more activities. These camps take place during Winter, Spring and Summer break. Camps normally have a theme and offer a weekly field trip away from the facility.

Not only is the facility amazing, but the staff is wonderful. Background checks are done on all staff to ensure the safety of your teen. They genuinely care. The genuine care is apparent in Director, Darrell Butler. He participated in the Teen Center as a teen, and decided to come back to work for – and improve – the program he cared so much for.

The Teen Center hopes to reach the community and increase the number of youth participating in the programs. They also hope to hire a music teacher and chef soon.

If you would like your child to participate, be sure to register with Parent Central Services. Registration is free and you can even schedule an appointment. For more information about the Teen Center, call 706-791-6500.

For a closer look at the new Teen Center, check out our “New Fort Gordon Teen Center” album on www.flickr.com/fort_gordon_mwr.
