HE’S GOT THE POWER IN HISHANDSJESSICA LAYT chats with one of the world’s leading hypnotists, Peter

Powers, about his long and interesting career as well as his upcoming show

pain.”This interest in other hypnotic forms

led Powers to an intriguing discovery in the Netherlands, where he was performing therapeutic hypnotism on an 11-year-old boy that didn’t speak a word of English.

“This was for a TV show, and as it was a therapeutic situation they had a monitor [and] all these little electronic sensors all over his scalp, so they could see what was happening to his brainwave activity,” he said.

Powers explained that he managed to hypnotise the boy by speaking a little Dutch, but thought he would need to use a translator after the initial process.

“But, in fact, the reverse was true. What I found from fi lming him for about 40 minutes was that every time I started to speak, his brainwave activity would go down regardless

of what I’ve said. Whereas when my translator spoke, he started to come out of [hypnosis].”

Powers discovered that there was something strange in the hypnotic process that seemed to break down the language barrier.

“I really don’t know what that is and I’ve not read anything about it either, but I found it just from doing it,” he said.

So audiences beware, it seems no-one can escape the hypnotist’s Powers!

“ It’s comedy. It’s absolute comedy,” hypnotist Peter Powers said of his latest show.

“I actually try to make the show as funny as I can from start to fi nish.”

Peter Powers has been a stage hypnotist since the 1980’s and has made regular visits to Australian shores with his unpredictable shows.

Fresh from a run in the UK, Powers is back in Australia and will be performing a show at Blacktown Workers Club later this month.

“I never really know how somebody’s going to react,” he said.

“Even if I’ve done the routine 20 times, I can see 20 different reactions. I keep the routines as sort of a skeleton for the show. I love people just to go where they want with it.”

Familiar to most Australian fans because of his appearances on ‘The Footy Show’, Powers tries to make his TV routines and live shows as different as possible so his live audiences never know what to expect.

“I’ve always been very careful not to do stage material on the TV,” he said.

“It’s like a comedian really – a comedian would never go on TV and do their best material, or do the funniest joke they can tell.”

Powers fi rst discovered his talent for hypnotism when, at the age of 12, he pretended to hypnotise his younger brother by slowly swinging their father’s pocket watch and repeating calming phrases. To his great surprise, he saw his brother’s eyes begin to close and watched his face relax.

“I just thought he was pretending, as indeed I was, but there was just something about the look on his face,” Powers recalled.

“I clapped my hands together and he

nearly jumped out of his skin! He was a bit disoriented.”

The next day Powers went to the library and borrowed a book on hypnotism, jump-starting his life-long obsession. It is this obsession that has seen the Englishman dubbed ‘the world’s most evil hypnotist’ – a moniker he is quite pleased with.

“I prefer to think that it’s evil with a cheekiness behind it,” he explained.

“I’d say some of the most extreme sorts of things [I’ve ever done] was burying somebody alive and pushing somebody out of a plane, which of course was rather evil.”

Another of Powers’ favourite tricks involves hypnotising a person in an infl atable dingy with a couple of paddles on stage to believe they are lost at sea.

“I’ll play the sound of the rescue plane... or the sound of the ‘Jaws’ theme so they think [that] there’s a shark in the water and that kind of thing,” Powers laughed.

“Just watching the reactions when they’re in that boat – I’ve seen some people take their shoelaces out of their trainers and put it on the end of the paddle and try to fi sh! Or make some kind of a hat out of their T-shirt – they take it off and make some kind of a hat to put over their head to protect themselves from the sun, and then they’ll get the shoelaces and start trying to catch a fi sh!”

As well as entertaining crowds, Powers also has a passion for hypnotism’s therapeutic capabilities.

“I’m obviously interested in the comedy side – it’s what I do, it’s my career,” he said.

“But I’m very, very interested in how the mind works. So I’ve used hypnosis and hypnotic techniques for phobias and removing

PENRITH’S PAVAROTTI RETURNS

D irect from Cologne, Germany, fantastic female jazz composer and performer Christina Fuchs and her quartet No Tango will perform at the

Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre next Saturday, November 10.

No Tango has been described as one of the most lyrical, humorous and innovative ensembles to come out of the renowned Cologne jazz scene in Germany.

During the past 20 years saxophonist Christina Fuchs has developed an instantly recognisable sound as a composer – combining jazz, ethnic and modern compositions that will fascinate from the fi rst note.

Her internationally award winning compositions have been played by numerous large and small ensembles in Europe including the United Women’s Orchestra, the NDR Radio Big Band and the Blue Art Orchestra

Critics from all over the world have loved No Tango’s unique sounds.

Jazz Podium said: “Strong, free grooves… a music full of lightness… It feels as if there is no end to the stories they can tell through the beauty of improvised music”.

Jazzthetik.de agreed by saying: “With No

Tango, Christina Fuchs has created a unique sound cosmos, one that stands apart from, yet incorporates, traditional musical styles”.

And from Antje Kohn, Melodiva: “The combination of woodwinds, percussion, bass and accordion is really fresh, mindful and creative”.

Christina Fuchs and No Tango play live at The Joan next Saturday, November 10 at 8pm. Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 concessions. Book by calling 4723 7600.

A ffectionately known as ‘Penrith’s Pavarotti’, acclaimed tenor, Lorenzo Rositano will perform alongside the crème de la crème of opera’s

emerging artists including Bridget Patterson, Paul Smith and New Yorker Sarah Toth at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Sunday, November 4.

Joined on stage by accompanist Benjamin Burton these talented singers will present a program of operatic favourites and musical theatre numbers.

Their repertoire will include selections from ‘La Boheme’, ‘Rigoletto’, ‘La Traviata’, ‘The Barber of Seville’, ‘Man of La Mancha’, ‘Porgy and Bess’, ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ and many more.

24-year-old Lorenzo Rositano claimed national headlines in 2006 when he was selected by the Australian Olympic Committee to perform the Australian national anthem at the Winter Olympics Games in Turin, Italy.

A graduate of the prestigious Talent Development Project, this program was developed and is directed by Mary Lopez, the former director of the Schools Spectacular.

Lorenzo’s early training was at the

Penrith Conservatorium of Music and he has since completed an Advanced Diploma of Opera at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

This will be one of the rare chances to see one of our locals performing back at home.

Don’t miss ‘Lorenzo & Friends’ at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre this Sunday, November 4 at 3pm. Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for concessions.

F ans of in-your-face action will relish in this week’s cop thriller ‘End of Watch’, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena.

From the writer of ‘Training Day’, ‘End of Watch’ is a riveting action thriller that puts audiences at the centre of the chase like never before. Entertaining, jumpy and exciting, ‘End of Watch’ is a realistic view of cops on the job that happened to stumble into a dangerous situation.

Gyllenhaal and Pena star as young LA police offi cers who discover a secret that makes them the target of the country’s most dangerous drug cartel.

Also starring Anna Kendrick and America Ferrera, ‘End of Watch’ uses the visceral handheld “found footage” technique that churned stomachs in ‘The Blair Witch Project’ and ‘Cloverfi eld’ to great effect.

The “buddy-cop” genre gets a shake-up from director David Ayer here, as Gyllenhaal and Pena deliver powerhouse performances that also add some humour to the drama.

I n line with the plethora of superhero fi lms plaguing our screens in recent years, the webslinger returns in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’.‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ is the

story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfi eld), an outcast high school student who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field).

Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to fi gure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father’s former partner.

While some die-hard fans of the last ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy will miss Tobey Maguire’s innocence and naivety, Andrew Garfi eld is worthy of donning the suit and brings attitude that his predecessor never had. Love interest Emma Stone is also a gem.

C heeky former British boy band member Robbie Williams delivers his ninth studio album today with the appropriately regal ‘Take the

Crown’.His fi rst album in three years, ‘Take

the Crown’ also marks Williams’ fi rst solo venture since rejoining his former band Take That in 2010. Featuring 11 fresh tracks, Williams said on his offi cial website that his main priority with ‘Take the Crown’ was “to write what I consider, and hopefully the world would consider, to be hits”.

Williams notes that “after the Take That reunion – a busman’s holiday, a break from my career which re-energised me in many, many ways – I wanted to come back with a massive solo album”, and he is quite successful with his new offering.

The album includes a collaboration with American folk songstress Lissie, who has had her music featured in such television shows as ‘House’, ‘Veronica Mars’, ‘The O.C.’ and ‘Moonlight’.

Produced and co-written by friend and Take That bandmate Gary Barlow, ‘Take

the Crown’ has already received positive reviews from critics, being lauded as an album full of hits and potential singles.

The album’s fi rst single is ‘Candy’, which Williams describes as a “summer song” in the vein of past smash hit ‘Rock DJ’. ‘Take the Crown’ is released today in both standard and deluxe editions.

M ourvedre is generally regarded as a variety whose roots were in Spain, although it’s also grown widely in France. More recently

it is being grown in New World winemaking countries including Australia – although some of our earliest growers and makers planted the variety here so long ago that we can in fact boast we’ve some of the oldest Mourvedre vineyards in the world.

Generally it is blended here with Grenache and Shiraz to produce the increasingly popular GSMs, although some makers are now bottling it as a straight varietal, including Terra Felix whose vineyards just north-west of Bendigo in Victoria have soils ideal for this late-ripening variety.

And the 2008 Terra Felix 2008 E’Vette’s Block Mourvedre in particular is a lovely drop with a palate that’s balanced and savoury, and has a typically Mourvedre spicy bite, together with a hint of oak. Pour it into the glass and

it has got a spicy cherry and blackberry fruit bouquet, with suggestions of herbs as well.

At around $17-$19 a bottle, depending where you shop, it’s a well priced red to enjoy with almost any barbecued meats, or Greek-style slow-cooked leg of lamb.

One for lunch: Victoria’s Yarra Valley is a consistent producer of exceptional Chardonnay fruit, with major local maker Chandon usually being associated with this fruit that goes into its outstanding bubblies.

But its recently-released 2011 traditional Chardonnay has been blended from fruit from the Upper Yarra Valley that exhibits wonderful citrus fl avours, and other parcels from the lower reaches of the Valley fl oor that have more stone-fruit characters to the fore.

The result is a wine whose aromas refl ect the two blends of fruit, and with fl avours of almond nougat and cashew. Pay $27.95 and enjoy with a creamy crayfi sh risotto.

THE MING

P enrith, in fact no suburb in Sydney, is short of Chinese restaurants, but fi nding a good one can often be a tough task.

Somewhat hidden away in the upstairs area of Panthers World of Entertainment is a Chinese restaurant that sits in the upper echelon of Penrith dining options, providing a great atmosphere, particularly for groups, and more importantly, sensational food.

There’s all your traditional Chinese fare, of course, and you’d be silly not to treat yourself by trying a range of dishes from both the entree and main course menu.

But there’s a few items that need to appear on your ‘must eat’ list.

The fi rst is the tantalisingly good Crispy Beef Peking Style, which I simply couldn’t get enough of – in fact my dining partner and I fought over the last few pieces on the plate.

It’s presented in a tangy Mandarin sauce that is simply to die for – this is without doubt the best of the best on the menu.

If you’re in a large group, defi nitely order two serves – or you’ll be left craving for more.

At $18.80 and on the Chef’s Suggestions main menu, it’s the pick of the bunch.

The Fried Soft Shell Crab with Salt & Pepper is also a winner, with a taste that leaves you wanting more and more.

The size of the Ming means it doesn’t look

like the perfect, intimate venue on fi rst look, but the layout enables a table for two to dine without feeling like they’re the entertainment for the evening. It’s group dining where The Ming really shines though.

Unlike many restaurants, The Ming is beautifully set up for parties or functions, meaning there’s no tight squeeze around the table, or Uncle Larry having to sit on the end in a makeshift setting.

There’s a fantastic range of banquets for groups too, starting at just $33.00 per person.

Pick of the bunch though would be the $55.00 per person banquet, which features Peking Duck as an entree, along with San Choi Bao.

The brilliant Crispy Skin Chicken Peking Style and Fillet Steak with Black Pepper make an appearance in the mains along with King Prawns, Scallop with Ginger Shallot, Hokkien Fried Rice, Boiled Rice and Baby Bok Choy with Mushroom.

The Ming is without doubt a leader in Chinese cuisine in Penrith.

A n upcoming performance by the Penrith Symphony Orchestra, entitled ‘The Elixir of Youth’, will feature a range of popular and new works

conceived by brilliant composers under the age of 26.

‘Soirées Musicales’ is one of two orchestral suites by the 20th century English composer Benjamin Britten, based on themes by Rossini. It gives an early glimpse of Britten’s masterful orchestration as well as his witty sense of humour.

George Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, a popular showpiece for piano and orchestra, will be played by Australian virtuoso concert pianist Michael Kieran Harvey.

Originally written for a solo piano and jazz band almost 20 years before the orchestral version that is best known today, ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ was controversial in its day for its fusion of classical and jazz elements, but has become an enduring favourite of the symphonic concert repertoire.

Also on the program is the world premiere performance of ‘Symphonic Movements’ by Sydney-born composer Andrew Howes.

One of Australia’s most gifted young composers, Howes graduated last year from Sydney’s Conservatorium High School and is currently studying composition on a scholarship at London’s Royal College of Music.

This new work is the inaugural commission by the Penrith Symphony Orchestra in a new scheme to commission and perform works by emerging Australian composers.

Alongside these striking, youthful works, the program concludes with Tchaikovsky’s ‘Symphony No. 4 in F minor’, one of the mighty pillars of the Russian Romantic orchestral literature. Dramatic and melodious in character, it is a stirring work that displays the composer’s symphonic genius to the full.

The program will be conducted by the orchestra’s artistic director, Paul Terracini, and can be heard at the Joan Sutherland

Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, November 10 at 8pm.

Terracini will give a free pre-concert talk before the performance at 7.20pm in the Joan’s Allan Mullins Hall, in which he will talk

with the soloist about the evening’s program.Tickets are $35 for adults, $32 for

concessions and $20 for people under 20.To book or for more information call 4723

‘ The Touch of Silk’ by Betty Roland is a hauntingly beautiful drama set in a country town in Australia post World War I. A poignant Australian drama written in the

1920’s by Roland and studied by university and high school students, it has helped shape Australia’s theatre landscape and is a true classic.

The play tells the tale of the life and trials of a returned serviceman and his French war bride. It explores the challenges they face following their return to life farming the land.

Jim Davidson and his war bride, Jeanne, face drought, debt and prejudice. Through their story the audience discovers how the smallest of misunderstandings can result in tragedy and how a little kindness could ultimately make all the difference.

With direction by Allyson Prowse and set and costume design by Leonie Sharpe, this show is sure to please audiences.

The cast has been pulled together from a talented group of actors from across Sydney to

breath new life into this iconic play. The leading lady Katy Cole, playing the

heroine Jeanne, hails from England, and this is her fi rst performance on an Australian stage.

The two leading men have an abundance of experience under their belts. The veteran and tragic hero Jim is played by Jordan Kenyon, who grew up in the theatre industry thanks to his parents and siblings.

Andrew Sheehan, a former Penrith local, plays Clifford Osborne. And last but not least, Annette Emerton, a Blue Mountains local, brings to life the antagonistic and miserable mother-in-law, Mrs Davidson.

‘The Touch of Silk’ is now playing at the Henry Lawson Theatre, Werrington County, during the following sessions – November 2, 3, 16 and 17 at 8pm, and November 3, 11 and 17 at 2pm.

Tickets are $21 for adults and $15 for concessions. To book your tickets or for more information call 4729 1555 or visit www.hltheatre.com.au.

I t’s quite ironic that last week Kyle Sandilands had the number one E-book in the country on iTunes yet he’s constantly nominated as the most hated

man in Australia in various polls. It’s no secret that one half of the country

love Kyle and the other, well, don’t. But it’s usually the ones that don’t like him who have never listened to his radio show and heard the real Kyle, who’s actually very funny and genuine.

Instead the only Kyle they know is the one portrayed in the media, as some outlets put it – “a fat slob”.

Kyle is one of Australia’s most successful and highest rating on-air personalities. His career has been riddled with scandal and controversy, yet his breakfast radio show on 2Day FM consistently sits at number one on the FM dial.

Now, in ‘Scandalands’, readers have a chance to get to know the real Kyle, from his diffi cult childhood in Brisbane, his strange

adolescence impersonating police offi cers, through to his steely determination to make it in radio and the successes and failures he’s experienced along the way.

Whether it’s teenage humiliation, his occasionally rocky personal relationships, or full-blown on-air catastrophes, Kyle tells his life story with disarming honesty.

Funny, frank and very revealing, Kyle’s memoirs are a page-turning insight into one of Australia’s best-known and most controversial media fi gures.

‘Scandalands’ by Kyle Sandilands and published by Macmillan Australia is available now in soft cover and E-book format.

FYI has fi ve copies of ‘Scandalands’ by Kyle Sandilands to give away. For your chance to win one, send an envelope with your name and phone number on the back to Weekender Scandalands Competition, Suite 2, 42-44 Abel St, Jamisontown 2750. Entries close Thursday, November 8.

N ovember is the fi nal month of the offi cial ratings season, meaning there’s now only four more weeks before our favourite shows say “bye

byes”…

Channel Ten has announced it will launch fi ve new Aussie dramas in 2013 including the comedic drama ‘Wonderland’ and the epic Australian story ‘Batavia’. Also new are ‘Mr and Mrs Murder’ with Shaun Micallef and Kat Stewart, ‘Reef Doctors’ with Lisa McCune, and ‘Secret & Lies: The Track’. Other engaging new local shows on Ten next year include the live, interactive series ‘Shock of the Now’ and Hamish Macdonald’s ‘The Truth Is’. Ten also has its hands on tennis’ Hopman Cup and the

rugby union featuring the Wallabies. One of their biggest coups is regaining the rights to ‘American Idol’ which FOX8 has had the last few years. Expect the latest season of ‘Idol’ featuring new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban to do great things for Ten.

SBS has also released their plans for 2013 and it’s set to be a great year for the multi-cultural broadcaster. Amongst the highlights include a new drama called ‘Better Man’ starring Bryan Brown, David Wenham and Claudia Karvan. Hilarious comedy ‘Housos’ is back for another season. There will be a new season of ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ which will feature some well-known Aussies including Rove McManus, Michael Caton and Adam Hills. Some interesting docos are on the cards such as ‘Once Upon A Time In Punchbowl’ and ‘Cronulla Riots: The Day That Shocked A Nation’. Old favourites such as ‘Dateline’, ‘Insight’, ‘RockWiz’, ‘Eurovision’, ‘Living Black’ and ‘Mad Men’ will all return.

Channel Seven are now on the hunt for contestants for ‘The Mole: Culture Clash’. If your gut feeling is always right, if you think you can spot a “Mole” at one hundred paces, if you think you are a great judge of character, you could be the one who outsmarts The Mole. Perhaps you can sabotage without suspicion and fl y under the radar – maybe you’d make the perfect Mole. Either way you need to apply to have a shot at winning a huge pot of cash. Applications close November 11. To apply visit www.go.mycastingnet.com/Apply/Show/TheMole.

Good news for fans of Channel Ten’s ‘Homeland’ as it’s been renewed for a third season by FOX in the US. The third season will consist of 12 episodes, with production set to begin in the US in spring.

Season two of the Tim Allen comedy ‘Last Man Standing’ will be fast-tracked to FOX8 this Sunday, November 4 at 7pm. Another show returning to Arena is ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’. The third season will begin on Tuesday, November 6 at 8.30pm. Lastly the ‘Big Bang Theory’ will return to its 7pm timeslot on Nine as soon as ‘Big Brother’ wraps this Wednesday.

One show I’m loving at the moment is Sci-Fi factual series ‘Hollywood Treasure’ (pictured). The show is a mix between ‘Pawn Stars’ and ‘American Pickers’ and follows Joe Maddalena and his team as they navigate their way through the intricate world of collecting showbiz and pop culture memorabilia. Episodes have featured items such the Wicked Witch of the West’s hat, the vintage ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ car, a Wonka bar from ‘Willy Wonka’ and other unforgettable props and costumes from some of the world’s most famous movies. The show is on every Sunday on the Sci-Fi channel at 8pm, and is also due to start airing on 7Mate soon. Don’t miss it!

P enrith Paceway turned into party central last Thursday night for a special fundraiser aimed at raising more funds for the Penrith Carer Car.

Everybody’s favourite ball of energy, Ross Hutchison from the Ross Hutchison Foundation, hosted the evening, with over 150 guests in attendance.

Apart from enjoying the harness racing on the track, guests were entertained by some fabulous rock and roll music, sensational food and raffl es.

Guests included Penrith Mayor Mark Davies, councillors John Thain, Bernard Bratusa and Greg Davies, Lindsay MP David Bradbury, Liberal Lindsay candidate Fiona Scott, the team from Vintage 87.6 and many more local businesspeople and keen supporters of the Ross Hutchison Foundation.

The night was a huge success, with plenty of funds raised, and there’s no doubt that Rossco will be back to do it all again next year for an even bigger event.

O n Sunday, November 4, Penrith’s most famous river boat, the Nepean Belle, is celebrating its 30th Birthday. And as part of the birthday celebrations the

Belle will be offering children (under 12) free rides with fare paying adults.

The Nepean Belle is a romantic old-world style Paddlewheeler. Refl ecting the grace and charm of yester-year, the Belle’s interiors are beautifully panelled with stained timbers featuring cedar and teak. There is nothing quite like the nostalgia of the paddlewheels churning, the water lapping against the hulls, reliving the romance and excitement of the paddlewheel era.

The Nepean Belle is renowned for hosting special occasions and birthday parties – offering great food, great scenery and a great atmosphere.

The Nepean Belle prides itself on its old-fashioned hospitality, complemented with stunning natural Blue Mountains scenery. On Saturday nights, the vessel’s fl oodlights

illuminate the rugged mountainsides of the spectacular Nepean River as diners enjoy a three-course dinner, music and dancing.

The Wakelings, who own the Nepean Belle, have also launched siblings of the Belle, with the Platypus Cruiser, a cruise boat that can fi t 130 passengers that has been operating since 2000 and the Nepean River Explorer, a taxi style vessel that was built more recently.

The continuous contentment this boat has given not just to the people of Penrith but also to the people of Sydney is testimony to the hard work of Mr and Mrs Wakeling and their children who started the business in 1982. Its popularity has not waned and remains a favourite among local families.

Book now for Sunday, November 4, and mention the special 30th Birthday offer to be eligible for the free child’s ticket.

For cruise details visit www.nepeanbelle.com.au. For ticket purchases, work Christmas parties or private charter information call 4733 1274.
