What are the issues now for Australia and our near neighbours? What does the future look like?

Key Concepts of Public Health

and Tropical Medicine

Public health protects and improves the health of individuals, families, communities, and populations, locally and globally.

The greatest advances in healthcare this century have stemmed from public health initiatives, sanitation, immunisation, infection control, and the management of communicable diseases to name a few.

At this conference, we will not only explore the core concepts of public health and what the issues are now for Australia and our near neighbours we will also investigate what the future will look like. We will gain an understanding of remote health care delivery as we visit our colleagues at various locations in PNG and reflect on the implications for our own practice in Australia.

The Conference is being held aboard the P&O Pacific Aria as we sail to Papua New Guinea. Delegates will have the fabulous opportunity to explore the public health issues facing our near neighbour as we visit our colleagues at a number of health services during the optional shore tours at Alotau, Kitava, Rabaul, Kiriwana Island, and Conflict Islands.

The sessions are provided as a mixture of face to face sessions (FF), self- directed reading material (SD), and recorded webinars (W). The webinars and the self-directed reading material are provided to attendees prior to the commencement of the conference. The attendee can view the webinars prior to the commencement of the conference as a self-directed CPD activity or the session will also be presented at the conference as per the program and the attendee can view the session in the conference room with a course facilitator present.

Presenters:

Gail Aylmer

Dr Margaret Young

After graduating from medical school in 1983, Margaret spent a number of years working in public hospitals in Queensland and Tasmania, then undertook training in general practice. An opportunity emerged to work as a volunteer in Cambodia. One year turned into three, and she discovered a passion for public health medicine, which she describes as the opportunity to marry medical training with the assessment of health and health needs, in order to mobilise resources to improve the health of the community. For the past fifteen years Margaret has worked in public health medicine in Queensland, currently as the Director of the Public Health Unit in Wide Bay.

Gail Aylmer is a registered nurse and works in the Communicable Disease Team of the Wide Bay Public Health Unit. Her role is Public Health Nurse - Immunisation.

In this role, Gail provides advice to vaccine service providers on the QLD Immunisation Schedule, vaccine eligibility, vaccine cold chain management, travel vaccinations, school-based vaccination programs, indigenous flu and pneumo programs, adverse event reporting and follow-up, and developing catch up schedules.

Shona Hubsher

Gail Alymer

Shona is a registered nurse who works in the emergency department in Townsville. She is currently completing postgraduate study in Emergency Nursing and International Public Health. She has a passion for Papua New Guinea and has volunteered on eight outreaches since 2012 with the YWAM (Youth With a Mission) Medical Ship.

The ship primarily works with rural and isolated communities to increase access to basic healthcare services. In addition, Shona was a member of a forward-planning team for future ship activities in Milne Bay province in 2013 and has since returned twice.
