Pre-Confederation Token Collection
Auction Sale #9
BGauctions
This collection sprang from the fascination of Murray Tolmie who, as a thirteen-year-old boy in Halifax, realized that
coins in Canada had earlier sported the names of provinces like Nova Scotia or cities like Saint John. The future historian began acquiring these locally-sourced pre-Confederation tokens which, as he grew older, served as the foundation to his broader collection.
After earning degrees from Dalhousie, Oxford and Harvard, Murray arrived at Mount Allison University in Sackville in 1958, where I also was teaching. We became fast friends but all of our common interests focussed on the university and its affairs and not at all on numismatics. After we both left Mount Allison, he for the University of British Columbia, I for the University of Ottawa, our friendship continued. In 1975 when Murray decided to part with his tokens, I decided to buy them. They made a fascinating new enterprise for me as I plunged into the numismatic literature and began adding substantially to the collection. Murray‘s selection emphasized but was no way limited to Maritime tokens. I was fascinated by the Saint George tokens of Upper Canada (Breton 719-720), also Breton 715 and the blacksmith tokens, among others.
During more than 35 years of collecting, I've been fortunate to make contact with a variety of auctioneers, dealers and collectors, fascinating helpers too numerous to name. But over the long haul, Warren Baker has been an invaluable fount of information, an unfailing source of additional tokens, and a good friend. Even closer to home, Chris Faulkner has been not just a good friend, but a secure source of knowledge about Canadian tokens, which is here demonstrated in this authoritative catalogue of the Tolmie-Thomson collection. I am grateful to him.
Most collectors leave their hoard to be dispatched after they have gone. I thought I would enjoy seeing my collection launched into a new life in the hands of others. The informed precision of Chris‘ catalogue, along with the knowledge that Geoff Bell‘s catalogues are beautifully produced leaves me with no regrets. A sad, yet happy parting.

jop silver dollArs
These five lots below are privately counterstamped JOP Dollars. The initials JOP stand for Joseph Oliva Patenaude of Nelson, B.C. who counterstamped silver dollars from 1935 to the early 1950s.
Due to lack of regular trade we have very little to base these estimates on, and therefore they may be very conservative.

285. 1974 Five Cent Error. 1974 reverse die cap, with an early stage full reverse brockage (capped and struck over a 2nd, previously struck, coin). Cap was subsequently dis-lodged, and struck 30% off-centre by the reverse dies as a uniface strike (over a blank plan-chet) and again capped on the reverse die. This later cap was struck sev-eral times over blank planchets, stretching the original reverse brockage out considerably. Cap was struck once more 90% off-centre, after being dislodged the second time. A complicated but stun-ning error; probably unique in Canadian striking errors.
$2,500-$3,500
286. 1975 Five Cent Error. First struck as an off-centre uniface error (pos-sible reverse brockage), then struck 70% off-centre struck as a reverse uniface strike, then struck multiple times by a reverse cap, with a partial obverse brockage. Simply a stunning error in hand.

Only $2 and $4 notes with this inscription have been record-ed, although corresponding $1 and $5 notes were very likely issued. The attempt to issue notes payable after one year was an act of desperation as the Agricultural Bank was in dire straits at the time, and it finally failed on 24th November of that year. A very low numbered note, in Fine condition but with minor roughness on the top edge, and a historic piece, almost never available to collectors. 669. 1901 Canadian Bank of Commerce $10. CH 75-14-20b, An attractive example of this very difficult note, ex Amon Carter collection. Only six examples are known in private hands, the majority of them graded only VG to Fine. This note appears to be almost VF, pressed, with a few minor holes and a small disturbance on the back at the bottom left. The manuscript signature is partly washed out. S/N:237621/D. $4,000-$4,500
670. 1917 Canadian Bank of Commerce $5. CH 75-16-02-04, The white background $5 with multicoloured seal is a tough note, much rarer than the 1917 $100. Only ten notes are on the register at this time, apart from the example in the National Currency Collection. Very presentable VF condition, with a little softness in the top and bottom edges. S/N:642609/D. $2,500-$3,000

1931 BANK OF MONTREAL $5 “C” TEST NOTE
726. CH 505-58-02c. One of the great rarities of 20th century Canadian chartered bank notes, this is only the second known example of the series C test note issued by the Bank of Montreal. It is also the finest known example, a bright, clean and original VF+, with just a bit of wear seen on the corners. Series C test notes were the “control” test, printed on Crane’s paper from Massachusetts. General Manager W. A. Bog is portrayed at the left and President Sir Charles Gordon at the right, with the arms of the bank in a large green V in the centre, and an old engraving of the Head Office building, unchanged from its introduction in 1904, is seen on the back. Rare test issue with S/N: C1277868.

737. 1837 Phenix Bank $1 Remainder. CH 590-10-02-06R, unsigned and not numbered, check letter B. A very rare spurious bank note from the time of the 1837-39 rebellions. During much of this time specie payment was suspended and a number of phantom banks sprang up to take advantage of the confusion. All notes of the Phenix Bank, issued or remainders, are extremely rare, but remarkably inexpensive in relation to their rarity. This note is new to the registry, and only the fourth known $1 remainder note. It is stained, particularly on the back, but otherwise a nice Fine. $1,500-$2,000
738. 1837 Phenix Bank $3 Remainder. CH 590-10-02-06R, par-tially signed and numbered, 4494/D. This note is, like the previous, a new addition to the registry, and only the sec-ond $3 remainder to be discovered. Considering its extreme rarity, we expect this note to sell at multiples of catalogue value. The note has been signed H. Reed at left but there is no signature in the space at the right. Apart from some top edge roughness and some staining at left, the note is in VF condition. $1,500-$2,000

ROYAL CANADIAN BANK $1 1865
756. Continental Bank Note Co. printing, Payable at Montreal, 2734/A, Charlton #635-12-04-01. The discovery note and only known $1 of this type, we offer this lovely F-VF note with a few insignificant staple holes. (The only other Payable Montreal issued note is a punch cancelled $5 in the Bank of Canada collection.) The Duke of Wellington vignette is at the left, the Royal Canadian Bank seal is superimposed on the Royal Crest at centre, and a blacksmith stands at his forge at the right. The note bears the engraved T. Woodside signature at left, and the bold manuscript signature M. H. Gault (per) at the right. Gault was manager of the Montreal branch from 1866 to 1870, and later became the President of the ill-fated Exchange Bank of Canada. This splendid rarity was discovered in a purse in a secret compartment of an antique desk in England, and first reported in April 2013. All notes of the Royal Canadian Bank are rare, and none are rarer than this. $15,000-$20,000
ROYAL CANADIAN BANK $2 1865
757. Continental Bank Note Co. printing, Payable at Toronto, 7389/A, Charlton #635-12-02-02. A remarkable com-panion to the preceding note. Two of these $2 notes are recorded but only this one is available to the collector, the other note being in the Bank of Canada collection. The note is conservatively graded VG10 by PMG, with internal repairs noted on the back of the holder. Despite moderate staining, the note is quite clean for the grade, heavy wear being confined to one vertical crease the back. The Prince of Wales is seen at the left, the Royal Canadian Bank seal superimposed on the Royal Crest at centre, and a pioneer farmer sharpens his scythe at the right. Signatures are T. Woodside, engraved at left, and Jas. Metcalfe, manuscript at right.

758. 1872 Royal Canadian Bank $10. CH 635-14-08, S/N:5572/D. Another Royal Canadian Bank rarity, this is one of only four known 1872 $10 notes. Two of the four are in the National Currency Collection. Condition is obvi-ously an issue with this note, although it could prove very difficult to obtain a better one. The edges are badly eroded, although some bits have just been rolled in and could be cautiously flattened out again. There is a punch hole can-cel, and worst, the entire lower right portion torn is away, taking out almost all of the Crawford portrait. The note is in decent condition where it exists, with the remaining design quite clear and legible, apart from the manuscript signature being very faint. An inverted black B stamp on the back does not appear to be meaningful. The only other privately owned example grades About Good, with sig-nificant pieces missing, from the Feb. 2002 Torex Sale.

763. CH 750-12-02, S/N:1828/B. A very rare early Newfoundland note, new to the register, with previ-ously unrecorded manuscript date 2 Oct. 1865. This is one of only four known examples of the 1865 one pound, of which three are privately owned. There is a dark stain on the bottom margin at the right, a tiny scuff mark on the frame of the seal vignette, and a few minor edge tears. Optimistically net graded F12 by PMG, but difficult to find any better.

764. 1859 Bank of Upper Canada $5 Rare St. Catharines Overprint. CH 770-22-04-08a, S/N:15007. Overprinted in red, 14 St. Catharines 14, and a discovery note thus, as no 1859 $5 domi-ciled at St. Catharines was previously known. The two manu-script signatures are W. J. Bennetts and C. S. Murray. All $5 notes of the 1859 issues are extremely rare, and this is the only known example with a town overprint to be available to the public. About Good, with tattered edges, tears and holes, but the printing and vignettes are reasonably clear. $2,000-$3,000
765. Lot of Two 1859 Bank of Western Canada Banknotes. Lot includes: $1 CH 795-10-04, VF with small tear at top center, S/N:2119/B; $5 CH 795-10-16, Fine with edge tears, S/N:859/A. Both with “N-N” black stamps on front and back. 2 Pcs. $150-$200
766. 1859 Bank of Western Canada $2 with RARE McMicken signature. CH 795-10-06, AG. This note is extremely rare with the engraved G. McMicken signature at right. Only two other privately owned examples are known, in addi-tion to one held by the National Currency Collection. McMicken demanded that all notes bearing his signature be rounded up and destroyed, and a new printing was completed with the more common Richardson signature. Unfortunately the note is missing upper left and lower right corners, and a tear at the right ends in a hole.
