What if that love came about as a response to the gifts we have been given by an infinitely loving God? What if we made a special effort to do something kind for a friend or neighbor or stranger, not because we ought to, but because God loves us and asks us to pay it forward? What if we made a special effort to help out at church or one of our favorite charities, not because we ought to, but out of gratitude for God’s generosity and the opportunity to share it with others? Wishing you all a Happy New Year. PASTOR’S REFLECTIONS

In thinking about why New Year’s resolutions are so ineffective, I conclude that one reason is because they become obligations. We make a resolution and then feel obligated to exercise more or obligated to quit a bad habit. And who really feels good about obligations? They become burdens that we all too quickly shed. What if instead of resolutions or obligations, we decided to undertake something new out of gratitude and a deep love? What if that love came about as a response to the gifts we have been given by an infinitely loving God? What if we made a special effort to do something kind for a friend or neighbor or stranger, not because we ought to, but because God loves us and asks us to pay it forward? What if we made a special effort to help out at church or one of our favorite charities, not because we ought to, but out of gratitude for God’s generosity and the opportunity to share it with others? Wishing you all a Happy New Year. And challenging you to ditch the resolutions and instead to examine the differences made in your life by the presence of God’s love and generosity – and then to respond in kind. Pastor Karen

ANNUAL REPORTS will be available on Sunday, January 18. If you are responsible for submitting one of the reports, the deadline for submission to Bonnie is January 6. ANNUAL MEETING - The congregational Annual Meeting will be held after church on January 25th. Among the usual agenda items and a budget approval, there will be updated information regarding our response to the sale of the land behind the church. Please plan to attend. HOLY COMMUNION CLASS Pastor will be holding a Holy Communion class in January for any of our youth in 3rd grade or older. Please let her know by January 4 if your child will be attending. The time of the class will be arranged at the convenience of the families and Pastor. SUNDAY SCHOOL PAGEANT The annual pageant will be held during worship on Sunday, January 4th. It will incorporate the story of Amahl and the night visitors. END OF LIFE PREPARATIONS Most people do not want to think about preparations for dying. And yet, it happens to all of us, prepared or not. In the case of sudden death, survivors are called upon to make decisions at a time of confusion and grief. Unless you have a will, legalities may prevail when it comes to your estate and final wishes. It is wise to plan ahead, relieving your loved ones of that burden while making known your wishes for that time when life has ended. Pastor Karen will be offering a class on Saturday morning January 17 (snow day is January 24) at 10:30. We will look at many aspects of end of life preparations including Advanced Directives/Living Will, details of a Memorial Service/Funeral including hymn and scripture choices, writing an obituary, saying goodbye to loved ones. Even if you have made some of these preparations already, consider reviewing and perhaps updating them. Please let Pastor know if you plan to attend. PAUL’S PALS AND SENIOR SAINTS Will not be meeting or singing in January and February.

THE LIGHT SIDE On my first day of Confirmation, Pastor asked if anyone knew who Martin Luther was. As per usual, my hand

shot up first, and before I knew it I was spurting out, "A Civil Rights leader." My pastor (and class) laughed hysterically. Megan B., California

A Bit from Bonnie

January The days are short,

The sun a spark, Hung thin between The dark and dark.

Fat snowy footsteps

Track the floor. Milk bottles burst Outside the door.

The river is

A frozen place Held still beneath The trees of lace.

The sky is low.

The wind is gray. The radiator Purrs all day.
