    PREFLIGHT INSPECTION

    Pilots' Checklist

    Figure 1NOTE

Visually check airplane for general condition during walk-around inspection. Airplane should be parked in a normalground attitude (refer to Figure 1-1 in the POH) to ensure thatfuel drain valves allow for accurate sampling. Use of therefueling steps and assist handles will simplify access to theupper wing surfaces for visual checks and refuelingoperations. In cold weather, remove even smallaccumulations of frost, ice or snow from wing, tail and controlsurfaces. Also, make sure that control surfaces contain nointernal accumulations of ice or debris. Prior to flight, checkthat pitot heater is warm to touch within 30 seconds withbattery and pitot heat switches on. If a night flight is planned, check operation of all lights, and make sure a flashlight isavailable.

ICING -INADVERTENT ICING ENCOUNTER DURING FLIGHT

    1. PlTOT HEAT Switch. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ON2. Turn back or change alti tude to obtain an outside air temperaturethat is less conducive to icing.3. Pull cabin heat control full out and rotate defroster controlclockwise to obtain maximum defroster airflow.4. Increase engine speed to minimize ice build-up on propeller blades. If excessive vibration is noted, momentarily reduce engine speed to2200 RPM with the propeller control, and then rapidly move thecontrol forward.

NOTE --Cycling the RPM flexes the propeller blades and high RPMincreases centrifugal force, causing ice to shed more rapidly. -Watch for signs of induction air filter icing. A loss of manifold pressurecould be caused by ice blocking the air intake filter. Adjust the throttleas necessary to hold manifold pressure. Adjust mixture, as -necessary, for any change in power settings.Plan a landing at the nearest airport. With an extremely rapid icebuild-up, select a suitable "off airport" landing site. With an ice accumulation of 0.25 inch or more on the wing leading -edges, be prepared for significantly higher power requirements, higher approach and stall speeds, and a longer landing roll.Leave wing flaps retracted. With a severe ice build-up on the -horizontal tail, the change in wing wake airflow direction caused bywing flap extension could result in a loss of elevator effectiveness.Open left window and, if practical, scrape ice from a portion of the -windshield for visibility in the landing approach.Perform a landing approach using a forward slip, if necessary, forimproved visibility.Approach at 80 to 90 KlAS depending upon the amount of the -accumulation.Perform a landing in level attitude.Missed approaches should be avoided whenever possible because -of severely reduced climb capability.
