Examine the ways by which regions suffering from deindustrialisation attempt to revive regional economies. [25]

Plan see – the two Word documents – looking at South Wales in general and Ebbw Vale Enterprise area in particular. Read Waugh handout – regeneration.

Introduction – define Deindustrialisation. Looking at different strategies over time – different levels of government – EU, UK, Wales, LA. Case Studies from - different parts of SW region.

Main part – case studies see Word docs. E.g. inward investment – Continental Teves at EV. LG in Newport – WDA. Cardiff Bay by CBDC. Ebbw Vale Enterprise Artea 2013 – The Works, Penn Pharma, Stuctured by Time going by.Environmental change, tourism, infrastructure (roads) too.

Use the sketch map of south Wales – annotate generally and label your case studies.

Assess how successful different measures have been – as you write about them. Remember to use specialist terms – growing tertiarisation of the economy..

Conclusion – SW a deindustrialised region – traditional heavy industries like iron and steel have gone. Successes in coastal plain e.g. Cardiff Bay but who gained?Still issues in upper Valleys hence EV Enterprise area.WAG responsible now. WDA failed with LG – ever changing global patterns. Environmental success – upskill workforce – ‘Knowledge economy’ of the future not heavy industry.
