Ideas for reading

Getting started

• Introduce the story to the children by sharing the cover. Discuss the question –

Where could Arthur go?

• Read the title together and ask the children to share their own experiences of

not being able or willing to sleep. How does it feel when this happens? Explain that

Arthur, the main character in this story, feels grumpy about it.

• Read up to and including p11 where Arthur grumbles his speech. Experiment

with reading this aloud with good expression and characterisation, paying

attention to the punctuation.

• Skim through the pages up to p29, and ask the children to follow what is

happening in the pictures, and how Arthur is feeling at each point.

Reading and responding

• Ask the children to read independently and quietly to p29. Observe their

progress and praise good expression and intonation.

• Before turning each page, ask the children to predict what might happen next.

As the story progresses, can they predict how it might end?

• Encourage the children to attempt tricky words by breaking them up into

manageable parts (e.g a-ma-zing).

• Help the children to identify speech, and to attempt different voices for each

character.

46

G3_Volume_C.indb 46 27/07/13 12:21 PM

Page 47: G3 Volume C - mushrifstars.weebly.com · When Arthur Wouldn’t Sleep Reader 9 Workbook 32 Before You Read 33 Key Story Words 34 Key Story Sentences 1 36 Key Story Sentences 2 38

Returning to the book

• Ask the children to select favourite parts of the book and read them aloud with

expression. Praise good phrasing and ask others to comment on the effect of

punctuation when reading aloud.

• Investigate any tricky words that have emerged, and prompt and praise use of

different strategies to decode them.
