The Mauritius Oceanography Institute (MOI), was established in January 2000 by the proclamation of the MOI Act (Act No. 24 of 1999). The need to rationalise and co‐ordinate research and development activities related to Oceanography was the motive for the setting up of the MOI.

Overall Objective:

To promote a more sustainable management of marine and coastal resources by improving decision making process through provision of additional pertinent information to mandated institutions in the East Africa region.

Specific objectives:

• To provide an improved and sustained access to Earth Observation (EO) and in-situ data to stakeholders of East Africa countries.

• To consolidate and develop applications for the Marine and Coastal Areas Services to adequately provide information to policymakers, scientists, businesses and the public.

• To develop a framework for promoting intra-African collaboration and open access to data for the Marine and Coastal Areas Services.

• To contribute to the implementation of the “African Space Policy and Strategy”, in particular on Earth Observation.• To strengthen capacities of national and regional institutions to generate and apply EO-based and in-situ information for

National Meteorological Stations, Fishermen community, National Coast Guards, Operators in the tourism industry, Researchers, Scientific community, Coastal communities, and the public at large

• Expected Results :

By making use of this new sets of data, a more accurate analysis of variations in oceanic parameters will be possible. Fishers provided with information on ocean state to protect lives at sea; data made available to scientific community and relevant stakeholders for decision making such as in case of coral bleaching event, HAB and storm surges amongst others.
