Meet the Artists Domain Home Accessories & Gallery will host its next “Meet the Artists” event with a showing of new work by mother and son folk artists, Linda and Matt Worsham, as well as painter Gary Mellenbruch. The event will take place at “& Gallery” (3129 Beach Blvd. S. in Gulfport) on Saturday, April 20th, 6-10 p.m. The artists will be on hand to discuss their work and interact with visitors. Complimentary beverages and hors d’oeuvres will be offered. Linda and Matt Worsham collaborate in their own line of work they call “GypsyCat Creations,” mixed-media folk art sculptures with a strong sense of whimsy and play. Recycled and found materials are the primary ingredients of the pieces, inside and out, with sealed, repurposed fabric on the surfaces creating a finished texture and color. Lighting elements were recently introduced to some of the pieces to create functional art “lamps.” “Critters” of various species, sometimes anthropomorphized with human costumes and characteristics, are the primary subjects of “GypsyCat.” Matt and Linda create pieces individually, though they often collaborate in ideas, techniques and materials. Matt’s creations, including his popular giraffes, are more typically dense and muted in color, while Linda’s pieces are often vibrantly colored and humorous. Matt works as a case manager for adults with developmental disabilities. He developed the basic process for “GypsyCat Creations” while leading art classes for his clients. He began creating more complex forms on his own time and started “GyspyCat Creations” in 2010. Linda is retired from a career in social services. After creating art in many forms in her spare time, she was inspired by her son’s “GypsyCat Creations” and joined him in the creative process. Both are Nashville, Tennessee natives, and after many years in St. Petersburg, both now live in Gulfport. Their work has been offered at “& Gallery” since the fall, and collectors from throughout the country have claimed “critters” of their own. Tierra Verde artist Gary Mellenbruch’s watercolor and designers’ gouache paintings depict

scenes that many local residents will find familiar. Iconic and colorful attractions such as the Don CeSar resort, Mary Pier and the Wharf restaurant in Pass-a-Grille, as well as Gulfport’s own Pia’s Trattoria are among the images that draw on talents Gary has honed in a long career as an architectural illustrator. Originally from Kansas City, he studied industrial design and after becoming an apprentice illustrator, formed his own “Mellenbruch Studios”

in 1969, creating architectural illustrations for clients from around the world. Accompanied by his sailboat, he moved to Tierra Verde in 1998, continuing illustration work, but concentrating on fine arts. He also operates his own art framing business. Attention to details and an emphasis on scale and perspective stem from his years in architectural illustration. The Florida environment also inspires his many depictions of natural maritime scenes.

Gulfport Firemen Rescue Baby DucksCourtesy WTSPGULFPORT, Florida -- A feathered family has been reunited thanks to the Gulfport Fire Department. Tracy Suarez saw a baby duck, alone, wandering around busy 22nd Ave. S. around 52th St. in Gulfport on Sunday afternoon. Then the duckling disappeared. Tracy heard a mother duck quacking, almost screaming and pacing around a parking lot. She looked into a storm water grate and spotted a whole feathered family -- nine babies -- in the drain. The grate was not the kind you can lift up, it was cemented in place and

there was no way out. The drain slats were so narrow there was barely room for an arm to fit in, and the little ones were out of reach. Tracy ran to the Gulfport Fire Department a block away and the fire and rescue team went into action. Bystanders stuck their hands into the drain and shooed the baby ducks down to a waiting firefighter, who found a mound of dirt in the bottom of the drain, making that part of the drain a few inches more shallow than the rest. One by one, Gulfport firefighters and rescue workers gently lifted the tiny ducks from the drain. Then the question arose: what to do with the mother duck? A bystander grabbed a portable dog cage he had

packed away and firefighters and bystanders slowly herded the mother duck into the dog cage with eight baby ducks. But there was one little one left in the drain. It was running back and forth, lost without its brothers and sisters. The baby was so little it was still covered in fuzz, not feathers. The rescuers could feel the baby in the drain hopping against the walls, but unable to lift himself out. They sat the caged mother next to the drain hoping she would call the baby toward her. And, strangely, the mother duck who had quacked nonstop for a half hour, went silent. Patiently, the volunteers and firemen kept their arms buried to the shoulder in the drain when -- pop -- the baby jumped in the firefighter’s hand and the rescue was complete. They took the whole crew a few blocks away to a one-acre pond at 18th Ave. S. and 54th St. It was loaded with ducks and water critters, and everyone guessed that is where the feathered family had escaped from. The firefighters zipped open the dog cage and the family waddled out, a few steps from safety and sunshine and home. The firemen hung around for a few minutes... there were a few backslaps and handshakes. But they were left asking the age-old question: why did that duck cross the road?

Congratulations, Jean! At the annual shuffleboard club picnic at Ft. Desoto Park on April 3rd, Jean Yves Rioux was honored for his accomplishment this past shuffle season. With credit for wins as well as attendance, his total accumulation of points was tops for all Town Shores competitors thus earning his right to have his name added to the "Plaque of Champions" displayed in the trophy case in the clubhouse. Jean Yves has been a club member since 1995 when he was picked as an original board member to assist in bringing shuffleboard back after years of dormancy and lack of interest in Town Shores. Through his efforts along with Nelson Burchat and others, shuffleboard has come back from the doldrums of the early 90s and is now an enjoyable outlet for many Town Shores Shufflers.
