2016 CELTIC CROSS AWARD WINNERS Bill and Ellen Babb
Bill and Ellen Babb have been active members of Holy Cross parish since August 1956. When we nominated them as this year’s Gaelic Gala Celtic Cross recipients Ellen was overcome with emotion and kept asking, “Are you sure? Who decided this?” All seven of Bill and Ellen’s children - Susan, Carol, Joan, Mary Ellen, Donna, Gail and Tom – attended and graduated from Holy Cross School. They were involved in various activities throughout their high school years, including many sports. Most of the girls played volleyball in high school, and Joan played in college. It wasn't until a few years ago that Bill admitted to Ellen, “I never really liked volleyball!” Bill and Ellen have used their time and talents in numerous ministries and organizations through the years. Together they have helped with funeral luncheons, the Irish Festival, and participated in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. They also divided and conquered their various parish responsibilities. Bill helped in the school cafeteria and at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, while Ellen taught Religious Education and was a substitute teacher at Holy Cross for 20 years from 1990-2010. Ellen is a member of Altar Society; in the past she served two terms as Vice President and two terms as President. Ellen is still very active – literally! - in the parish attending our weekly low impact aerobics class in St. Ed’s Hall on Tuesday mornings where we’ve been practicing the Cupid Shuffle in preparation for the dance at Gaelic Gala! She is also an EMHC at mass. Bill and Ellen are blessed with 14 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 2 step great-grandchildren and 1 step great-great grandchild!
