Featured artist for the month of August at Galerie Copper is Tina Moore of Stockton. Tina is presently serving as exhibits chair and president on the board of the Pastel Society of the West Coast. Her genres range from animals to portraiture, landscape and floral. (Pictured is “Working Class”.) Tina is teaching a pastel class at Atelier Copper August 18. Copper Art Club First Wednesday Open Painting Wednesday, August 1—9:30 am 12:30 pm Fourth and fifth Wednesdays are open painting from now on for Copper Art Club members. Come have a cup of coffee and work on your project with friends. No instruction; no cost.
Jay Brackett will be available for help finishing your oil paintings for a $10 fee, but we will still have open painting that day. Oil Eight-week class on Thursday mornings August 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, September 6, 13, 20 9 am to 12+ pm Oil Painting with George Allen Durkee of Mountain Ranch Students will meet once a week at Atelier Copper for instruction and individually tailored weekly assignments. On occasion, students will paint during class time, or en plein air nearby. Emphasis will be on color mixing and paint handling. Some painting experience and minimum level of drawing knowledge are required for this class. Supply list available from Larry. Cost is $300.
Oil Eight-week class on Thursday afternoons August 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, September 6, 13, 20 2 pm to 5 pm Oil Tips and Techniques—A Step-by-Step Approach to Painting Like the Old Masters with Jay Brackett of
Copperopolis. The first painting will include most landscape elements, such as in this photo (which will be provided). Jay will show you both how to compose a good paintings and give you tips and tricks on how to paint trees, rocks, water, etc. You will need the following supplies (all available at Town Hall Arts): a 16x20 canvas, a 6810-66 Connoisseur palette knife, Simply Simmons brushes: ½” flat, ¾” flat, flat shader #6, script #1, spotter #10/0, angle shader ¼”, and a Winsor & Newton Eclipse double thick bright #11. Larry is offering all Winsor Newton brushes at 25% off for any student taking Jay’s class. Paints for Jay’s class include a large tube of Permabla white, and the following landscape colors: burnt umber, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, Thalo blue, cad red medium, cad yellow medium, Payne’s gray, cerulean blue. Optional colors are sap green and Naples yellow. Cost for each session is $15, walk-in; however, if you sign up the week before the class cost is $10, non-refundable. Watercolor Saturday, August 4, 10 am – 12:30 pm Peppers on Parade with Selma Sattin of Copperopolis This is a fun watercolor workshop tailored for beginning artists (those who have been painting 3 years or less). Participants will use their "artist eye" to paint the intriguing shapes and colors of peppers, a mainstay ingredient of many Southwestern recipes. We will paint from life and use re-prints of some of Selma's pepper paintings to spark ideas in composition and technique. Workshop participants will learn how to plan a painting, develop a contour sketch and work out a palette of harmonious colors. Emphasis will be placed on the use of lights and darks to define and enhance form. Participants can expect to complete (or come pretty close) an original 8 x10 or 11x14 watercolor painting by the end of the session. What to bring: two or three peppers (red or yellow only), pencil or pen, and your watercolor supplies to include: 140 # cold-pressed paper or heavier if preferred, 3/4 " or 1 " flat in addition to assorted rounds, sketchbook at least 8x10. We will be using the following pigments: alizarin crimson; a warm red such as permanent red, cadmium red, or scarlet lake; lemon yellow, or cadmium yellow, ochre, French blue ultramarine, and sap green. All materials --except fresh peppers!-- are available for purchase at Town Hall Arts. Class size is limited to 8. Adults and children age 14 and up with some experience in watercolor painting are welcome. Cost: $15 per person. Deposit of $5 will hold place your place.
Copper Art Club Wednesday, August 8—9:30 am to 12:30 pm California Quail Watercolor with Susie We will be using only three Daniel Smith colors for this painting: French Ochre, a soft, wheat-colored gold that imparts a subtle glow to your watercolor work; Lunar Blue, a moody hue that evokes the mystery of a stormy sky; and Quinacridone Burnt Orange, a warm pigment that brings a bold, yet neutralizing orange to the belly of your bird. (This kit is available at Town Hall Arts.) Plan to paint on
a 9x12 or larger sheet of Arches 140 lb. paper. Bring a small scrap pieces of wc paper for color chart. Look for pictures of backgrounds that you would like to incorporate in you quail painting. Bring your usual watercolor supplies, including paper towels and water containers. Cost is $10 to members, $15 non-members. Kids Saturday , August 11 • 10 am to 11:30 am Southwest Landscape with Carol Earle A fun way to learn perspective! Supplies included. Cost: $15; $10 deposit due July 25. Pastels with Tina Moore A pastel workshop to help you get the most out of the wonderful medium of pastels will be offered by award-winning artist/instructor Tina Moore of Stockton. Learn to put life, depth, and drama in your pastel paintings. Both experienced pastel painters and those new to the medium will be able to make a beautiful painting with plenty of
one-on-one instruction. Participants can make their own choices regarding subject matter. The principles apply whether you are painting a portrait, landscape, or anything else. Stained Glass Mosaic Quail Stepping Stones with Kathie Peery of Copperopolis Saturday: glue pieces in place. Sunday: grout stone and polish (sealer will be given to apply the following day). Kathie will provide a quail pattern and jars and jars of colored glass for your background. All supplies are included for this project. Kathie has been doing stained glass for ten years and has
expanded into mosaics as a means to use all of the scraps from glass panels. You can never have too many stepping-‐stones! Class cost: $20. Deposit of $10 due July 2.
Calaveras Outdoor Paint ing Society Sign-up now for this summer Calaveras Outdoor Painting Society with Sunny Sorensen of Hathaway Pines This new plein air group, lead by Sunny, will paint the beautiful scenes in our county this summer. Joining COPS requires that you paint from life outdoors at least twice a month. Members will be e-mailed a bi-weekly choice of locations and times. All locations will
be in Calaveras County. Members buddy up with a fellow COPS or paint on their own. At the end of summer (September), members meet at a Town Hall Arts to bring and talk about their work. At that time, Galerie Copper will set up an exhibit of COPS summer work. There is no charge to join COPS, but artists must be experienced in plein air as there is no instruction. Monoprint ing Saturday, September 8 • 9-12 noon and 1-3pm
Pour it On with Ken McBride of Oakdale Ken returns to Copper for some fun paint play on the square. In the morning session, we will “pour it on” under canopies on the square. In the afternoon, we will come inside and learn Ken’s finishing tricks to complete our paintings. Cost is $45 for the day, which includes supplies. $20 deposit, check or cash, saves your spot.

Acryl ics Saturday, Sunday, October 13, 14 • 9:30 am to 4 pm All About Acrylics with Priscilla Klass of Half Moon Bay Join well-‐known peninsula artist Priscilla Klass and paint a beautiful autumn still life. This class will emphasize composition and value in developing a painting. Beginning and intermediate students welcome. We will be using Graham gloss medium and Golden Heavy Gel Medium. You will need two 16 x 20 canvases, which may be purchased together in a Value Pack at Town Hall Arts and bristle brushes: #10 bright, 8 bright, 4 bright, and 4 filbert (a good choice to go with the #10 bright is the Princeton Real Value Packet of seven brushes.) Other supplies include a #110 palette knife, a 12x16 resealable palette for acrylics, a bar of conditioning soap for brush cleaning. Priscilla’s palette colors include Liquitex tubes of cobalt blue, ultra marine blue green shade, alizarin crimson hue permanent, cad yellow medium, titanium white, sap green permanent, ivory black, and Graham colors of yellow ochre and cad red medium. Easels are supplied; bring a TV tray to use as a supply table if you have one. This class is limited to ten students. Cost of two-‐day class is $225. Please sign up with a $75 deposit by Sept. 14, non-‐refundable after Oct. 5.

Saturday and Sunday, October 27, 28 • 10 am to 3 pm Wolf Workshop with Gemma Gylling of Valley Springs In Gemma’s Wolf Workshop, you will learn to create realistic animals using colored pencils. By learning to draw an animal’s eye, nose, mouth and fur, you will master the steps needed to create believable looking animals. Gemma will share her secrets on the
best ways to break a reference photo down to small manageable sections rather than viewing the drawing as a whole. You will do this by drawing an animal portrait on suede matboard, which is included in the instructional kit provided by Gemma. If the animal portrait is not completed in the class, you’ll have the step-‐by-‐step instructions along with a photo to take home. Supply list available from Larry. Cost for workshop: $60, which includes one Wolf Kit. Gemma’s other animal portrait kits may be purchased at Town Hall Arts at any time.
