THE GALLEON 9th Lymington Sea Scouts Issue 8 July 2011 Your Sea-Scout Group Needs You! At the moment, 9th Lymington is in desperate need of some adult support. Thankfully, Stephen Gough (Harrison’s dad) has volunteered to continue the fantastic job that Akela and Raksha have been doing at cubs, but there are still many more roles that you could fill. It is unfortunate, that due to pressures at work Karen Simpson has had to step down from Group Scout Leader as of immediate effect, may be this is a role that you would like to volunteer for? Or, if you would prefer something more practical on a section night, I know both the scouts and beavers are looking for helpers and assistant leaders (please contact Anne or Helen directly - numbers on the back page). May be you can volunteer to help on a rota basis, once every 3-4 weeks? May be you can use your skills to come down and help with a badge activity? What about joining the fund raising committee? If you are able to give some of your time to help, it would be very much appreciated, please contact your section leader, or our Chairman - Mike Harris on 01590 623370 - [email protected]

THE GALLEON 9th Lymington Sea Scouts Issue 8 July 2011

Your Sea-Scout Group Needs You! Celebrating History… Did you know that before the RNLI established a lifeboat station in Lymington, sea rescue was

provided by local volunteers. In 1937, the first official rescue service was provided by the 9th Lymington Sea Scouts... by 1963 George Power had formed the Sea Rescue Service and their coxswain was a founding crew member when Lymington RNLI’s inshore lifeboat station opened in 1965! As part of 9th Lymington Beaver’s celebrations this year (we are celebrating 25 years of Beavers) we have been doing 25 good turns each and raising funds to buy some sea safety equipment for the colony and for the RNLI. We were lucky enough to visit the station, watch the RNLI lifeboat launch and try on some uniforms, as well as handing over £45! We have been having a great year so far:

We have had a district birthday party We have made our own flag (see below) Donated tools to “Tools for Self Reliance” Tried Archery Learnt about Lymington’s Smugglers Global challenge day with New Forest National

Park and African Drumming We have tried Chi Kung We have awarded 12 Chief Scout Bronze Awards

to Beavers who have truly done their best.

We are delighted to welcome Anne Moxom to the Beaver team – Anne (Pigeon) will be joining myself (Heron), Teal (part time) and Robin, as the Beaver Leaders. We have also welcomed Budgie to the colony – a scout from 1st Lymington and Pennington, who has been helping out for her Community Challenge Badge, and whom has decided to stay! Congratulation to her too – as at 12, she now proudly holds her Chief Scout Gold Award. A huge achievement!

Heron The Beaver Disco Most of the beavers in the New Forest went to a beaver disco on the 24 of January. We made our own hats we could wear and we came in silver home clothes. When we had finished our snack the big county beaver came and danced with us after that he had his own cake and blew out the candles. The best bit was when beaver danced with us. For snack we had a hot dog, a bag of crisps and a piece of cake.

Dear Akela and Raksha,

Thank you very much for all the activities you have arranged for us and all the camps and places you have taken us. I really enjoyed the kayaking at the sea water baths, diving and shooting at sumer camp last year and going in the biggest fastest boat at rib night last week! Shelter Box was also a fun thing to do going around London for charity. Thank you very much for making cubs such a fun place to be. We’ll all miss you both.

Best wishes

James Doll.

We shall miss you, thank you for all your hard work and being so much fun (especially the cub camps) From Jasmin

Harrison joined Cubs at 8 , and is now 10 ½ so due to move up to Scouts soon, My daughter Molly joined in May and absolutely loves it, even begging me to let her go on Cub Camp this year! Harrison initially joined Cubs alongside a few school friends, all of which have left over the last year through other commitments, but Harrison wanted to stay. He has enjoyed every single moment; especially the Cub Camps and I really believe that this is down to the leaders. I have to say a special thank you to Wendy and Hillary for their kindness, enthusiasm and support over the last 6 months. Harrison and Molly lost their father earlier this year, it has not been easy for them or for me. I have not been in much of a position to provide help at Cubs and I want them to know that this has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. I am so very very grateful. I am mortified that Hillary and Wendy are leaving after so long in service, but obviously wish them both well and think they more than deserve the time off!!! Once again, I can’t thank them enough, and I know that Harrison in particular will miss them both very much. We wish them both all the happiness in the future and hope that their boots, although difficult to fill will be filled well!! Many thanks and all the best, Chandy, Harrison and Molly Rance

Best wishes for the future Barbara, Dominic and Benedict

A huge thank you Akela and Raksha for all that you have done. The “You’ll never guess what we did tonight…!” comments from Corey when he comes home on a Thursday night, say a lot about how much you have given to each Cub. Thank you! Anne Moxom

(Corey’s Mum)

Dear Akaka and Raksha Thank you for all the time and effort you have put in to ensure the Cubs have such an interesting and enjoyable time Love The Middle Family Helen, Steve, Samuel & Oliver

A big Thank You to Hilary for encouraging all of my sons during their time in Beavers (Alexander), then Scouts (Alexander and Ben) and lastly Cubs with Rory. They have been on numerous camps with her, and the memories of those camps will last a lifetime.

Thank you to Wendy too, she has seen all three boys through Cubs, and has watched them transfer on to Scouts, although she sadly will not be there to pass Rory over. They have all benefited from her enthusiasm and belief in them. She has given them all opportunities they would not otherwise have had, and the memory of the Dusty Bin award still creates a good laugh in the Torrens household!

Mike and I wish you both a very happy and well earned retirement.

Jill and Mike Torrens

Sea Scout Swimming Championships

For Royal Navy Recognised Troops

held at HMS Raleigh, Tor Point, Plymouth, 2011 This event comprises 24 teams from the 101 RN Recognised groups nationwide

and has been run annually, broadly in its present form, since 1974. We have previously won the Scout Competition for the Otter Trophy in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1992, 2000 and 2009, but this year we had to settle for 2nd place.

The Scout ‘under 12’ squad - Harry, Max and Henry achieved: Freestyle 3rd, Breaststroke 1st and Backstroke 6th.

The ‘under 14’ squad - Will, Matt and Chris achieved: Freestyle 2nd, Breaststroke 1st and Medley Relay 4th .

When the two age groups got together for the Squadron Relay they produced 3rd place which gave us the ‘runners up’ position in the overall Scout competition. They then went on to win the line throw relay – a first!

Lymington Explorers ‘under 16’ squad - Harriet, Izzy and Alex , with the ‘under 18’ squad - Jack , Toby and Adam achieved Freestyle 5th and 3rd, two Breaststroke 4ths , Backstroke 1st and 6th , Medley Relay 4th, Squadron Relay 3rd and a line throw relay 2nd .

The dedication of the squad and the reserves to weeks of training was most impressive and gained them the results they deserved.

The team was accompanied by Leaders Jean Paton, Simon Bush, Anne Pike and John Sims who spent a busy few days, driving there and back and helping with running the events and activities. Thanks are due to Lymington Recreation Centre Pool Staff and Customers for their help and forbearance. Thanks all, John Simms

Q What can you make with a packet of spaghetti and a bag of jelly babies?

A Loads of stuff!!!!!!

Nick Carter, group president popped into Beavers to see them pioneering with spaghetti and jelly babies! They

made over 25 models from racing circuits and wigwams to catapults and animals.

At the end of the evening, Archie and Evie received their Chief Scout Bronze Award - the highest award in

Beavers. WELL DONE!

Blashford Sailing Regatta

The annual Blashford Sailing Regatta was held at Blashford Lakes on Saturday 9th July. This

is a sailing regatta for Scout Groups who have water activities in their programme. The Scout Troop entered a strong team, 19 in all, with a good mix of experienced sailors, those who had recently completed their RYA Level 2 & younger Scouts in their first regatta. The Explorers entered a smaller, but none the less keen team. The weather was kind, with plenty enough sunshine & generally a reasonably steady F2-3, although varying in direction. A good days sailing was had by all, with many individual wins & places. Once again 9th Lymington triumphed, winning the Single-handed under 14 Picos outright - Well done James - & sharing the honours for Double-handed under 14 Picos - Henry & Harry - with Sandleheath. The team won the 'Scout Overall Competition' taking it from Sandleheath by some 14 points. The Explorers also did themselves proud by coming 3rd overall in their competition. A really good day, the team excelled themselves in representing 9th Lymington to our usual high standards, both in attitude, behaviour & results! Next regatta is Testwood… Anne & Laurence
