On thE CoVerHK AnneGoose Creek, Rainy Spring45" x 60"Artist's Statement: Artists have long used the landscape as a metaphor for individual's journey through life. I always enjoy Joseph Campbell's passage from The Hero’s Journey,"You enter the forest at the darkest point, where there is no path. Where there is a way or path, it is someone else's path. You are not on your own path. If you follow someone else's way, you are not going to realize your potential."

My exhibit covers my interpretation of the four sea-sons over the span of 2012 through 2015. Hopefully, the viewers will be able to put themselves in these landscapes and be reminded of their own journeys - sometimes the view is murky; sometimes pleasant and colorful; often the view is obstructed; and at other times clear blue, crisp and sharp. H. K. Anne is an American Landscape Artist based in the greater Washington DC area. Her paintings con-tinue in the lineage set by the Hudson River Valley artists of the 19th century, yet record the changing landscape in the 21st century and the emotional connection we have with our environment. The Cabinet Art (see also Uptown/DC):

Raquel Partnoy: Colors of the Tango, Oct 5-30.Tango emerged late in 19th c. urban Buenos Aires in response to immigrant working- class struggles for love and economic viability resulting in a complex culture whose emotions Partnoy embeds in images of clasping, danc-ing couples. The scenes are full of innuendo with social and political overtones, painted in colors of cafes. Drawing on Tango lyrics about young women, Partnoy poignantly exposes the false promises of redemption through café love. Sketches in pastel are also on view.

A painter, published poet and essayist, Partnoy's work can also be seen this month at the Argentine Embassy, in paintings about the experience of survivors of the 13 year Argen-tine “Dirty War” called Packages.

Work on paper in The Cabinet Portfolio features figural subjects in various media by Cabinet Artists.

Langley Spurlock with poet John Martin Tarrat. Secrets of the Elements 4, Time’s Arrows. Einstein thumbs a ride through time as art and haiku meet at the corner of Aluminum and Gold. Opus 4 in this long-running col-laboration takes another look at the good, the bad and the truly nasty of the periodic table.

Diane Blackwell-Tea Time. A series of paintings with playful look at taking tea. By limiting the subject matter to things related to tea, the paintings are free to explore scenarios, colors, and artistic references. "It's the rituals and ceremonies in life that provide structure and comfort."

Lois Kampinsky-Bound and Determined. This exhibition plays with the concept of bind-ing in a panoply of color and complex line. Boundaries can limit, but they also liberate.

Inner/Outer: Solo Exhibition featuring local artist Leslie Nolan, thru October 17. Capturing lone figures caught in a moment of personal awareness, these works shed light on the inner emotions Leslie Nolan's subjects have tried to carefully hide.

Psychology Behind the Paint featuring local artist David Bell, October 23 - November 28. A native of Vermont, David Bell (of David Bell Antiques) has been a creative presence in Georgetown for 25 years. Having always been attracted to surfaces and the way things age, Bell segued into the antiques business, open-ing his eponymous store in Georgetown soon after his arrival in DC . Bell has been providing his bold abstract paintings to savvy designers over the years. While the stylistic range of Bell’s work is broad, there is always a signa-ture strength & earthiness to it.

Susan Calloway Fine Arts specializes in con-temporary art by local, regional, and interna-tional artists, and offers a selection of vintage

and antique American and European oil paint-ings as well. The gallery provides extensive art

consulting services for business and residen-tial clients and collaborates with architecture and design trades. The gallery also specializes in conservation framing using archival-quality materials and techniques.

" Cross MacKenzie Gallery 1675 Wisconsin Ave NW, 202.337.7970 www.crossmackenzie.com

October 14 thru November 12: Sylvania photographs by Anna Beeke and Intersection Photographs by French artist, Lea Eouzan. As a part of the 8th edition of FotoWeek DC festival, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, in partnership with Cross MacKenzie Gallery, present the exhibitions “Sylvania” by Anna Beeke and “Intersection” by Léa Eouzan.

By depicting the confrontation between nature and human society, the visual French-American dialogue between Anna Beeke and Léa Eouzan explores the physical presence of the forest in the contemporary world as a metaphor for the chaotic, yet passionate rela-tionship between human beings and nature. Such an encounter forged the myth of the Universal Forest in our collective imagination, a labyrinth of woods barely marked by human presence.

20th Century People. “People in prints” by celebrated 20th century American printmak-ers. Creating in a time when the art world was pushing towards abstract expressionism and modernism, these print artists stayed rooted in a sort of inherent figural humanism. With an exquisite ability to convey emotion through the anatomy of the human figure, the artists used their etchers needles , wood-blocks, and burins to capture an arresting gaze, a fleeting moment between individuals, people at work, at play, and deep in thought.

The Old Print Gallery specializes in contem-porary and early 20th century prints, from American and local DC artists. Established in historic Georgetown in 1971, the gallery has become one of the most respected antique print and map galleries in the United States, with an extensive collection in American his-toric prints, botanicals, Currier & Ives, Audu-bon’s, American town views, and maps of the United States. The gallery also specializes in conservation framing, using archival-quality materials and techniques.

Through October 18: Gerhardt Knodel: Let the Games Begin! In Knodel’s latest work, gaming-based strategies provide both a visual and conceptual point of entry.Approached as pure entertainment, games can evolve into unex-pected experiences with both a lighter and a darker side, subtle shifts in expectation rela-tive to outcome. This work leads the viewer to art experiences inspired by thoughts about competition, accumulation and loss, human

relationships, mind manipulation, the end-less repetition of the patterns of life, and the tension between informed authority and self-discovered knowledge.

Blood Mirror, organized by artist Jordan Eagles, seeks to create an open dialogue and effect change around the US Food & Drug Admin-istration's current discriminatory policy on blood donations from gay and bisexual men.

Reflections and Contradictions: five decades. Influential glass artist Mary Shaffer creates a site-specific “tool-wall” installation for her solo-exhibition to feature her fascination with discarded tools. "I take lovingly crafted, hand-forged tools—the epitome of American inventiveness—to preserve and pay tribute to activities and methods of working that have disappeared from our modern lives," she says.

Itinerant Edens: Of Fable and Facsimile. A series of male figures derived from familial models are central to Walter McConnell’s installation.

Lines, Rhythm and Life - Recent paintings by Eunhee Park Dickerson, October 6 – Novem-ber 7. Eunhee Park Dickerson works primarily in abstract oil paintings on canvas. Ms. Dick-erson has an eye for subtle nuance in colors as well as peaceful balance of form in her compositions. She draws inspiration from the unseen realities of daily life, evoking thoughts and emotions that resonate with us all. As an amateur musician, she also draws inspiration from the music that she both listens to and plays. She is most pleased when her reason and inexplicable emotion come together and bring the right balance.

Ms. Dickerson received a BFA from the College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University, and did independent studies and post baccalaureate studies at Wright State University, Ohio, and the University of California, Davis. This is her 10th exhibition and her 4th in the Washington D.C. area. For more information, contact cura-tor Eunhee Dickerson at [email protected] or 301-493-8989.

St. John’s College Campus, Mellon Hall, 60 College Ave. (410) 626-2556. Tues-Sun 12-5, Fri 7-8 pm. www.stjohnscollege.com.

Thru October 11: House Proud: Nineteenth-Century Watercolor Interiors from the Thaw Collection, (Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum), is an exhibition that exam-ines the evolution of the domestic interior in 19th-century Europe. The exhibition was organized by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithson-ian Design Museum, and explores the origins of the modern home through Eugene (St. John’s College, Class of 1947) and Clare Thaw’s generous gift to the museum of these 47 interior watercolors.

The exibition showcases the Thaw’s collec-tion of 19th-century watercolor drawings, which meticulously detail the era’s interior furnishings and document the social, cultur-al, and aesthetic development of European domestic life. The collection includes exam-ples of English, German, Russian, French, Italian, and Austrian domestic spaces.

Chagall: The Early Etchings, October 23 – December 17. In the early 1920s Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard commissioned artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985) to create a set of etchings. This selection of 65 prints illustrate two popular literary works: Nikolai Gogol’s (1809-1852) Dead Souls, an 1842 classic novel, and Fables, Aesop-like tales by French author Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695). This selection of etchings was originally owned by the Italian art historian and critic Lionello Venturi. It was presented as a gift to Rosabianca Skira, wife of Swiss publisher Albert Skira. “Chagall: The Early Etchings from the 1920s” was organized by Contemporary and Modern Print Exhibitions.
