autumn and winter 2011/12 at Gallery II

limitless possibilities…A season of work exploring alternative views and experiencesEarlier this year, we celebrated the success of a bid from the Economic and Social Research Council, to develop a ground-breaking research study by Dr Ruth Bartlett about dementia activism into a touring exhibition. This exhibition explores how we can use art to mediate change. It is a privilege and a pleasure to work with such a great team of people and we look forward to showing you the results. NO LIMITS Re-imagining Life with Dementia hopes to capture some of the powerful and inspirational experiences of men and women with dementia and allows us to question our assumptions about what it’s like to live with this condition.

The Tracker Chronicles, an exhibition which spans Richmond Atrium and Gallery II, looks behind the camera and beyond, to question the truthfulness of the optical machine. The installation playfully asks the questions: Whose truth? For whose purpose? To what end? This is Gallery II’s contribution to an exciting new festival of photography, Ways of Looking, which comes to Bradford in October and is inspired by the theme EVIDENCE.

From November, visitors to Richmond Atrium will encounter the heart of Bradford and the ordinary people who live here through a series of powerful photographic portraits. Bradford Raw captures an essence of the cultural diversity of Bradford’s inner city areas. These portraits are at once confronting and intimate and ask the viewer to stop and consider their own observations.

Gallery II opens its doors in November to an abundance of possible adventures. We will be showing a selection of work made in response to the idea of memory and place, both real and imagined. As part of a whole series of inter-related happenings, we will be lifting the lid on Bradford’s underground scene and playing out with a host of people, with loads of opportunities to make work and make friends.

THE TRACKER CHRONICLES Richmond Atrium & Gallery II 1 – 28 October 2011

Festival launch weekend starts Friday 30 SeptSpecially commissioned work for Gallery II by Simon Ford and Colin Lloyd Showing as part of Ways of Looking, a new photography festival in BradfordUsing surveillance technology, data collection, digital print and re-imagined objects, The Tracker Chronicles plays with an array of information gathering devices, exploring their possible meanings and applications. Live camera feeds and data streams are overlapped and interfered with, movement is mapped across a public atrium space occupied by a CCTV tower and a time travelling chandelier. Meanwhile back in the gallery birds sing, stocks rise and fall, sun spots flare, people watch and are watched and the images and data flow.

The Tracker Chronicles explores the complex connections between looking, listening and reading, in different times and spaces. Who is looking, what for and why? The artists, Simon Ford and Colin Lloyd, are not predicting answers but hopefully provoking thought through poetic digital-image-object interplay.

Before this and as part of the British Science Festival, from 10 – 15 September in Gallery II, we will be showing some of the working process that has gone in to the making of this exhibition.

NO LIMITS Re-imagining Life with DementiaPop Up Art Space, Centenary Square. Bradford 10–15 September 2011 A first-ever national touring exhibition of work which aims to develop an aesthetic of dementia activism.

Developed in partnership with men and women with dementia and in collaboration with artist Shaeron Caton-Rose and filmmaker Anne Milne, it explores the individual and collective strength of people living with this condition. The exhibition brings to life ideas around community, empowerment, and friendship.

The work in this exhibition is grounded in information gathered from a pioneering research study by Dr Ruth Bartlett [University of Southampton] on the campaigning activities of people with dementia and curated by Caroline Hick, University of Bradford Fellow in Visual Arts.

Funded by ESRC and showing as part of the British Science Festival 2011

BRADFORD RAW | John BollotenRichmond Atrium 7 Nov 2011 – 24 Feb 2012Bradford is a richly diverse city home to an estimated one hundred different nationalities. Living in harmony with each other goes beyond notions of race, religion and ethnicity. When we are confronted with the faces of our neighbours, what do we really see? Is it a friend, enemy, or even a threat?

These frank and intimate portraits question what we see and what we might assume. They are all portraits of ordi-nary people who currently call Bradford their home and are a testament to the journeys of photographer John Bolloten. They stand as a truthful account of one person’s exchange with another and challenge us to look again, with an equal and impartial gaze, if this is indeed possible.
