Summer has arrived with a full blast of heat for us all. Hope- fully you and your loved ones are staying cool in some way or an- other. Here at The Scarab Club-.we always have cool minds no matter how high the temperature outside. The heat didn't bother Scarab members attending the Garden Party on June-' 5th and visitors at the Detroit Festival of!Arts Friday, June 10th Sunday, June 12th. Board member Lynn Jovick's hard work organizing the annual Garden Party is much appreciated. Mem- bers enjoyed conversation, food and music while sitting in our lovely garden. During the Detroit Festival of Arts Scarab Club guests enjoyed the Union Street Grazing Station, Iron Ivy in the Garden, our cash bar and Basement Blowout Sale arid Silent Auction. - The Scarab Club raised an estimated $4500 in sales! Many thanks to all volunteers, staff and Board Members who helped make the festival weekend a success! Your volunteer days do not have to end with the festival! Please join us all year long to high- light our club. Call 313-831-1250 if .you would like to be part of The Scarab Club volunteer team. Beginning July 5th talented stu- dents from Detroit area schools will utilize three floors of the club build- ing for dance, music and fine art throughout the month of July. The Scarab Club welcomes these stu- dents as part of an ongoing rela- tionship with the City of Detroit Recreation Department and the Arts Place. Lastly, our thanks to the follow- ing members who have made dona- tions to the utility fund. They join the generous members listed in the last newsletter. Ken Claes Rachael T. Harla Craig Chin Stephen Veresh Charles Winkler The Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors will be fea- tured in the main gallery during July and August in an exhibition titled, A Feminine Perspective. Work from the Scarab Club Art Collection will be shown in the lounge gallery. Don't miss the opening reception on Friday, July 8th from 6-9 pm. After Labor Day we will feature two new exhibitions; In the main gallery, work by Charles McGee and Al Hinton and in the lounge, artwork by the Scarab Club studio holders. Charles McGee has had a tremendous impact in his long career as an artist, teacher and arts activist. We're hon- ored that he will be signing the beam at the opening reception on Friday, September 16th. Scarab club artist news: Araxey and Elizabeth Barsamian will be ex- hibiting their work at the Oakland County Executive Office Building in Pontiac, through August 12th...Scott Maggart will be featured in the Sep- tember issue of The Artist magazine. Be sure to check out the article, show- casing his subtle and richly detailed oil and colored pencil work...You can see an example of SLAW's delightful artwork—right in our own neighbor- hood. His contribution to the Car- tunes fundraiser can be seen on the corner of Warren & John R, next to the Science Center...Special thanks to Donna & Jim Jalosky, owners of Iron Ivy, who donated a lovely trellis—one of their own creations—for the garden. The shows will run in October and calls for entry will be mailed at the end of July. During the last two weeks of August the building is closed. All gal- lery and building hours return to nor- mal after Labor Day. And They're Off!...Guess who is running for Mayor of The City of Detroit? Scarab Club member Senator Hanson Clark recently joined the mayoral race. Now who says art and politics don't mix? Scarab Buzzle...Can you name one club member who has actually wrestled a bear? No? Well, ask Floyd Binns to tell you who won.

Greetings Scarab Clubmembers! Summer hasarrived with a full blastof heat for us all. Hope-

fully you and your loved ones arestaying cool in some way or an-other. Here at The Scarab Club-.wealways have cool minds no matterhow high the temperature outside.
