WELCOME

AND SO A WINTER OF DISCONTENT IS PROMISED US, WITH FORECASTS OF NOVEMBER SNOWS AND A BITTER & LENTHY PATH TO SPRING

NEXT YEAR. LUCKILY GALLERY IS HERE TO KEEP YOU ENTERTAINED AND INFORMED WHILE YOU TOAST YOUR FEET BEFORE THE FIRE.

This issue is themed Boys Toys, and we’re letting loose on some of our fantasy gadgetry and self-indulgence. From dapper winter clothing in our fashion shoot and luxury gifts from watches to cars; we’re doing it all in our own unique way. We have a special focus in the fashion & beauty section on Male Grooming, and once we’re decked out in our new clobber and smelling all manly and...stuff...what do we want to do? That’s right! Play computer games! Our feature on Gaming Guides should give the prospective game buyer the information needed to make informed decisions at the tills this winter, whether buying for themselves or for that special man in their life.

And we’re not finished there; not by a long chalk. Gallery always seeks to provide you with a higher percentage of quality, readable and entertaining editorial every month, and November is no different. We’ve got features on: a quality travel piece on the Bolivian Salt Flats; a glance at the Belfast Christmas Market; a Manx snapper doing well in the USA, a very busy Hardware Section; and of course all the regular features you’re growing to love: Me & My Pet, Upload, Paparazzi, and Boardom. Let’s not forget Bonfire Night: be sure to check in on our Things To Do Listings on firework displays. Get wrapped up warm, perhaps with one or two Hot Toddy’s down you, and make your way down to a local display.

Once again, thanks for picking up your copy of Gallery Magazine Isle of Man, and thanks again for all the great feedback we’ve had since the last issue. We’re always looking to improve, and the people of the Island are vital in that process. So, thank you.

SR

Gallery is published eleven times a year as a fresh yet

discerning guide to all that happens on the Island and beyond, not too arty farty

superior or too serious, writ-ten by the people of the Isle of

Man for people everywhere.

We get to put this little logo on because we love the Earth, save

44You’ve got him his 846 pairs of argyle socks (in varying sizes, mysteriously); you picked out the best woollen sweater with the most startling pattern on the front, whose design and purpose remains undecipherable even to the knitter who birthed it. Sitting alongside these, and other gems, is the other prerequisite yuletide gift that you know is – deep down – disappointing: a Lynx Shampoo and Shower Gel Set – purchased in the face of the advertising campaign, because we all know that not even the girls on that advert will ever be good enough for him, in your eyes.

You’re not cruel, you know that he doesn’t want pyjamas or sweaters, and the last thing he needs in his teenage

years is for his mother to be buying him boxer shorts! So why does this happen every year? Why do you always struggle to accompany these vital, functional gifts with that one shining item, that one beacon of understanding that makes Christmas morning what it is? It’s not for lack of trying, you’ve tried asking every year what he wants. We at Gallery understand: if you don’t get an unintelligible grunt, punctuated by pointless shrugs, worst still he answers...and it’s like listening to Japanese backwards. You know it’s something to do with that squalking gogglebox machine he sits in front of for hours on end, but what the hell did he say? Luckily, this year, we’re here to help.

We can just picture the scene; there’s only a half dozen weeks until Christmas and you’re starting to worry a little bit that you haven’t got your boy that special present.

FYI:PEGI Pan European Game Information; this is a European video game content rating system designed to provide parents guidance on making an informed decision when purchasing a game. There are five age ranges: 3, 7, 12, 16 & 18; and eight content descriptors: Violence, Bad Language, Fear, Sex, Drugs, Gambling, Discrimination & Online. These are used to give the purchaser as much information as possible about the content of the game they are buying.

This winter, why not enjoy a good feed and an enjoyable watch at the Patchwork Cinema Supper Club in Port St Mary. The newly licensed cafe will combine a wide variety of independent movies with a home cooked three course supper. So now there’s no need to take the long journey to Douglas and back for your cinematic ‘fix’.

This year there are Best Guy Fawkes and Best Illuminated Lantern competitions available, as well as the traditional fireworks display. Meeting at the Railway on the Promenade at 18:45 with a parade to the Cosy Nook Cafe, where judging will take place at 19:00 – the firework display will then take place at 19:30. There is also the Rocket Express departing Douglas at 17:15 and returning 20:30.

The Capital’s display will get underway at 19:00, with catering vans around the area of the War Memorial from 18:00. This year the display will be launched from a barge in the bay, providing spectacular views from anywhere along the promenade.

This year sees a Best Guy Fawkes competition from 19:00, which is run and operated by Sure. Refreshments will be available at the Lakeside Centre. Parking will be available on Mooragh Promenade and Mooragh Amenity Centre. The display itself fires off (see what I did there?) at 19:30.

Peel Festivities will commence with the lighting of a bonfire on the beach before the display itself at 19:30, fired from the breakwater as in previous years.

Organised by the Friends of Michael School, this local display will be launched from the fields behind the school itself, and is to be held on Friday 4th. There will also be local refreshments available.

Over £350 was raised for charity by Fairbairn Private Bank staff, together with Java Express, at their “World’s Biggest Coffee Morning” event on Friday 30th September; which included a cake baking competition, with Java Express offering its selection of indulgent hot and cold drinks, from flavoured coffees and frappes to decadent mochachinos and frothy hot chocolates, delivered to the office. Staff who ordered a drink had the

chance to win one of several prizes indicated by a gold star at the bottom of their cup.

Picture and caption quizzes were held to raise further funds. The sponsorship support from Java Express enabled the charity committee to retain a portion of the takings from the drinks orders. Macmillan Cancer Support is one of Fairbairn Private Bank’s four staff-nominated charities for 2011.

COMMUNITY

A Fundraising Co-ordinator at The Children’s Centre has earned a Certificate in Fundraising. Mark Eastham is believed to be the first person in the Isle of Man to receive the qualification which is awarded by the Institute of Fundraising. The organisation is the professional membership body for UK fundraisers and its mission is to support fundraisers, through leadership, representation, standards-setting and education, and it champions and promotes fundraising as a career choice.

Mark said, “The course and the qualification are both extremely useful in my role at The Children’s Centre. As with all charities we appreciate that the current economic climate makes it more difficult for individuals and businesses to donate funds. So, the charity fundraiser’s role is becoming more and more professional which means we have to train accordingly.”

Linda Galloway, from Peel, was the lucky winner of the grand prize in Manx Telecom’s Summer of Love promotion, and is off to Liverpool for a weekend with 10 relatives and friends. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Holidays weekend break is the culmination of a summer long series of super prizes given away by Manx Telecom.

Linda said, “We had a choice of destinations, but chose Liverpool because there is such a good choice of places to go and things to do. We’re all looking forward to a great weekend and it will be a chance for us all to celebrate the birthday of one of my cousins, but I can’t tell you how old she is!”

Linda won the competition after renewing her mobile contract, one of many easy ways Manx Telecom customers could enter the Summer of Love prize draw. David Smith, Manx Telecom Director of Marketing, congratulated Linda on her win and thanked Steam Packet Holidays and 3FM for supporting the competition.

Eleven staff from fiduciary and funds firm Abacus have spent a total of seven days working to create a kitchen garden at The Children’s Centre’s Community Farm, which will be open to all of the Island’s community from next spring, and will become an educational resource focusing on experiential learning. Abacus sponsored the kitchen garden and gave a donation of £500 towards the project. But

the company wanted to do more than make a financial contribution so staff rolled up their sleeves and went to work on preparing the soil for planting, putting up polytunnels and creating raised flower beds.

Chrissy Cannell, Farm Development Officer, said, “The Abacus team worked really hard and everyone at the farm appreciates their efforts.”

This is the event’s 48th year – 86 teams participated in 2011. Viking Longboat World Championship Chairman, Nigel Rawlinson, commented: “Once again we had an incredible turnout, both of teams racing in the event and supporters who came along on the day. It is fantastic to see so much money being raised for the sole benefit of Manx charities.

“I would like to thank our sponsor, Royal London 360°, and our media partner, Manx Radio, for their support – without them this event would not be such a success.”

ANIMAL

When the normal cat yoga cleansing ritual becomes a struggle and you regularly hear yourself called ‘Fat Cat’, well that does something to a cat’s confidence! Overhearing the humans say ‘that cat looks like it has swallowed another cat’ although initially a challenge, hit me like a rancid hairball - ouch - maybe I have let my mice catching days pass me by in favour of sleeping, enveloped in my own stomach sleeping bag.

What to do? Take my 3 top tips to feline streamlining! 1. Let your human loose on some kitty toys - encourage them to look stupid, spinning round with your favourite string toy; humour them by chasing it to get that necessary daily cardio. 2. Cut down on those kitty biccies and up that MEAT! Hey, we are carniverous - what crazy person thought that disguising biscuits in the shape of a fish would actually fool us? I think they forget who is the superior species...just because we allow them to feed us! 3. Finally,

as much as it goes against everything that makes me a superior being - if you have a particularly stupid human who just can’t sort the tools for your remarkable transformation then they may need the brains of a V...E...T...suck it up, hold your head up high in your cat carrier and get on a weightloss plan devised by your Visciously Evil Torturer (Vet) - sometimes they know best.

Trust me - in no time you will be back to your svelte, killer self! Why not reward your human’s efforts by catching them a tasty morsel...remember you do the dissection for them and be sure to perform this rite preferably on a cream carpet - I find this gets the best reaction!

Fostering First, the organisation responsible for foster care across the Island, wants to hear from anyone who could provide a home for a child in care. Fostering First was created last year following the signing of a new contract between the Department of Social Care and The Children’s Centre.

Currently 125 children are in care here in the Isle of Man with 57 being looked after by foster families. Of these 57 children, 18 are under five-years-old and 23 are teenagers.

At present, there are 43 approved foster caring families, but Fostering First is looking to recruit more. Between January and September this year there were 52 children needing foster care. Suitable foster carers were found for 34 of these children, but

there were not enough suitable foster carers to find homes for the other 18. Fiona Lassen, Head of Fostering Services at Fostering First, says:

“Right now, there are children in the Isle of Man who need the support of foster carers to help bring some stability into their lives. Foster carers can come from a wide range of backgrounds and we are happy to meet anyone who is interested in finding out more about becoming a foster carer.”

Foster carers must be over 21 but there is no upper age limit. Carers can be married, divorced, single, or co-habiting. It does not matter whether they have their own children or not, or whether or not they own their own home.

Those who are approved as foster carers will receive training to develop knowledge and skills to help them care for children. Fostering First will provide ongoing training packages and financial remuneration to cover the expenses of caring for a child. A Fostering Link Worker will also visit at regular intervals to support carers in their fostering role.

For more information about Fostering First go to www.thechildrenscentre.org.im/fosteringfirst, email [email protected] or call 631947.

Inquiries about becoming a foster carer can also be made by visiting Fostering First’s offices at 17 Village Walk, Onchan.

Rex’s Rant

For example: our beloved roads. I’ve heard a lot of complaints about pot-holes and road works ruining people’s driving experience, but I think there’s something far worse on our transit system: other drivers.

Autumn is approaching, and the nights are drawing in; and while that makes for good hunting in the glen, it means there are longer hours to drive in the dark. Now, with these shiny new cars it’s hard enough to see on the roads at night without being dazzled by bright xenon headlights. Worse still is the fact that these new model cars have a functiony-widge to raise or lower the headlights. This doesn’t mean it’s ok to just jam them all the way up! (I know where I’d like to jam them...)

And it doesn’t stop there! No! Suddenly we’ve got a bloody rash of motoring gits who think it’s perfectly acceptable to put their sidelights on at night, when they have no adequate reason to do so. You know the ones; they’re just below the headlights they should be using in isolation, not illegally blinding other motorists with

their four-lamp, Jean-Michel Jarre-esque Wazuk Lightshow! You’re not a sodding rally car!

Hell, most of the time they’re people carriers! Bad enough that they should ruin the roadways with a car that looks like an egg, but now they romp around like extras from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The bottom line is, as a road user you’ve a responsibility not to blind other drivers. Think of others.

And that’s another thing. You know that triangle button inside your car? Yes, the one that turns on those fascinating, blinking orange lights. Those are hazard lights. They are supposed to be used for all manner of things, like bringing attention to a stationery vehicle near moving traffic. However, that doesn’t mean they’re ‘park where you bloody like’ lights! Stop being so lazy! Find a proper place to park that doesn’t deliberately obstruct other drivers, and then walk the extra seven and a half yards to your destination! The exercise will do you good!

Gadgets and Gizmos

However, in today’s technology-driven world, it is a fact that women’s interest in them has boosted the market. They have grown to depend on a number of different kinds of gadgets. Many of them are home-related luxuries such as the latest coffee machines and time saving items such as super fast washing machines and of course mobile phones and ipads.

Others are beauty-related. But gone are the days when women were considered to be technologically challenged! Now it might just turn out that your girlfriend knows more than you about the latest phones and computers on the market.

Whether it be communication devices, gaming consoles, music systems, sports related or cars, men share a special relationship with gadgets.

Whilst men’s gadgets have traditionally been associated with less cosmetic based products, it appears that grooming has become even more important to the appearance-conscious British male.

The line between men’s and women’s gadgets seems to have blurred in recent years as 1 in 8 British men admit they can’t go on holiday without their trusted hair straighteners along with their hair dryers and travel irons!

The role reversal over the preference of gadgets has not just seen men embracing their feminine side, but has seen women make some shocking revelations as well. Women have admitted to taking a games console abroad with them, and this figure was significantly higher for them than men! These unexpected results have shown that the world of gadgets is changing for both men and women, with new, popular ones replacing traditional items such as books and travel games.

Men like the power and ego-boost that gadgets can provide, with fully loaded cars and the latest phones being status symbols for many. Arm wrestling and drinking competitions are no longer the way to prove masculinity, it’s gadgets that do the trick now. When asked if women are attracted by a man’s gadgets...many men thought that,

as they are the new way to show off wealth, taste, intelligence and status , it could not fail to help impress the ladies!

Both men and women say they take their phones, tablets and laptops with them to keep up with work whilst holidaying, keeping them switched on throughout the duration of the holiday so they don’t miss out on what is happening back at the office!

The ‘go anywhere and do anything’ attitude that both of the sexes have today, ensures that gadgets such as multi-purpose mobile phones provide the sense of freedom they crave. The selection of gadgets we have in our lives now is impressive. We have made unbelievable technological advances in the last 20 years and life will certainly not be the same again.

The question is, what are all these gadgets really freeing us up to do? If our lives are spent handcuffed to our communication device are we really ‘free’?

Words| Manx Kitten

Gadgets and Gizmos are usually associated with men. You will not be surprised to find men’s magazines full of adverts and articles about devices such as the latest iphones, xboxes and Kindle readers.

You’ve got him his 846 pairs of argyle socks (in varying sizes, mysteriously); you picked out the best woollen sweater with the most startling pattern on the front, whose design and purpose remains undecipherable even to the knitter who birthed it.

These are used to give the purchaser as much information as possible about the content of the game they are buying.

FPSThis is a type of gaming perspective wherein the point of view is first person, that being the camera reflecting what the main character is seeing and doing. Usually shooting...but not always. FPS is really about the First Person, not necessarily the Shooting.

SANDBOXArguably the opposite of Linear Gameplay, the Sandbox is ‘where modern online gaming is at’ these days. The player exists in a visceral, organic virtual world that is often evolving or developing around them, and they equally have the opportunity to affect the world around them and then engage in the gameplay in almost any fashion they choose. Sandbox games often have the greatest longevity.

DLC

Downloadable Content is the term that refers to any extra available features that could expand or alter the game to keep it playable long after purchase. Sometimes free but often available for a small price, this DLC can be downloaded directly to the console and installed easily. They could take the form of squad updates for football games following transfer window updates, or extra levels or equipment for RPGs or FPSs.

LINEARAs the name would suggest, this type of gameplay has a defined story which often offers little in the way of opportunity for the player to affect the world around him. You start at A and end at Z. Realistically speaking, once you’ve reached Z the game is over. You can play it through again on a harder difficulty, but it’s essentially the same game.

LAGThis refers to problems with online gaming, wherein gaming servers (that host the game) and the software can sometimes result in glitches or ‘pauses’ in gameplay when online...which is just infuriating.

Lag is bad, we don’t like Lag.

There are many

more gaming

terms, but this

should keep you

going...

RPGThere was a time (when Video Games were called Computer Games) that by and large your options for games were Platform Games, Shoot ‘em ups, RPGs or Simulators. This was a time pre-Doom, and the FPS was yet to explode on the market. Archetypal RPGs like Dungeon Master actually often employed a First Person perspective, and involve developing the main character or your own creation, growing in power as you play the game.

These days RPGs function best as Sandbox games, although titles like Dragon Age 2 failed to deliver on this front recently.

It’s a commonly held belief that boys and men of all ages love their toys or gadgets, but is this just an

obvious result of the consumer society we live in and the merchandising machine that tries to pervade our every thought and action nowadays? Or, is it simply an innate calling within all men to see who can pee the furthest?

The first ‘gadget’ that man discovered was over two million years ago, when he took a rock and started to use it as a hammer. This may seem inconsequential to us but if it hadn’t been for this monumental shift in human capability, we would never have developed into the technology and gadget filled society we now live in.

This shift may have started with one small rock, but when that first Palaeolithic man showed his friends what he could do with a rock, it flicked a switch in their uncomplicated brains that would turn on their previously hidden materialistic, consumer and competitive neuro-transmitters.

You can imagine that as they mumbled in appreciation of an object smashed by the rock, inside they were already planning how they could get a bigger and better rock to smash things up!

However, time has moved on, we have travelled to the moon and back, but the call of Palaeolithic man can still be heard from an ancient place, deep inside every man. Only nowadays, the rock has been replaced with the television and these just keep getting bigger and better too.

The speed and pace of technology has seen a leap in TV sizes over the last thirty years; from the once gargantuan 27” analog TV to the monumental 37” cathode set, which reigned until the recent surge in flat screens with an average size now being a whopping 50”. By 2015 some estimates are that 60” will be the average screen size, and who says size doesn’t matter?

But it doesn’t stop there, the choices of technological gadgetry is bewildering; do you want LCD, LED or Plasma? And then you must choose either HD, Blu Ray, 3D or a combination of all three, and that’s before you’ve even considered your online or gaming functions.

As men strive to establish themselves within their group as the Yoda of TV technology, the one who claims to understand the real difference in viewing in 3D, the stakes just get higher and of course, so does the cost of their beloved toy.

The pinnacle of this TV evolution is universally acknowledged as having been reached when a man casually drops into conversation that everyone is welcome at his house to watch the next big match. And that this will be watched in nothing less than his home cinema, the ultimate in the TV hierarchy.

Even though home cinemas are fast becoming the latest trend in house additions or DIY developments, don’t feel your TeVolution is stunted, Bose have made this more accessible for the masses by turning your TV into a cinema experience. Their recent launch of their VideoWave® system provides built-in sound technologies so there are no speakers to wire up and precariously position. Plus Blu-rays, Sky or game consoles can all connect to one console and can be controlled from anything from a digital video recorder to your ipod with a single remote. Enough to move anyone off the couch and to the shops, even if it is for the next goggle box.

(So from the humble rock we have hewn, what to most men is the ultimate toy, the TV but have TVs reached the end of their evolution? Perhaps the iPad 3 will be the next generation’s boy’s toy.)

TRAVEL

Crossing Bolivia’s salt desert, a blinding white sheet of tightly-packed salt crystals formed interlocking tiles stretching from one horizon to the other. As we drove, I had to screw my eyes up against the glare to follow the faint, brown tracks left by previous Jeep tyres.

I was on a five day expedition across the Sala de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt desert. The previous day I’d trawled Uyuni town’s tourist cafes loooking for five buddies crazy enough to share a jeep with me as far as the border with Argentina.

We were geared up for hardship so it was surprising when we soon reached a hotel - made completely of salt blocks. We sat on salt chairs around salt tables, drinking coffee and admiring salt ornaments which included a Christmas tree complete with salt baubles.

Outside, a line of low salt piles stretched to infinity. A bicycle was propped against one of them and its owner, a boy wearing a balaclava and sunglasses, was shoveling salt into a new pile. Once he’d finished, he licked his finger and marked the pile with his initials. Our driver, Quintin told us that the boy was one of the salt farmers who cycle daily from Colchani, helping to shovel 10 billion tonnes of salt for export to Brazil.

At the back of the hotel, where Eurpeans might expect a beer garden, we played table football, trying to reassure ourselves that we were still on the same planet we’d woken up to that morning. But the faraway Isla de Pescardores with its carpet of cacti shimmered and floated teasingly on

the midday heat haze. Back in the jeep, 4WDs from competing companies accelerated past us, throwing up clouds of dirt which coated my tongue with red, metallic-tasting dust. Brown, sloping hills rhythmically rose and fell to pan pipe music and the French contingent began to complain that Quintin’s one and only CD was becoming wearing.

Occasionally, we encountered sculptured erratics - desert versions of wind-blown trees which made us feel like we were driving through a Salvador Dali painting. Small lakes appeared ahead and rare James flamingos with shocking-pink wings took flight at the sound of our engine.

That evening, in the village of San Juan, I crept down the main, dirt track to the tiny church, my footsteps startlingly loud. No trees waved their branches here. No birds sang. Untying the chicken wire at the gate, I passed graves with wooden crosses. Some were decorated with flowers; not all were named. Like all the surrounding dwellings, the thatched church was made of adobe bricks. Its tower, no higher than three metres, supported two pottery vases and a crucifix.

From behind me, the sun cast an orange hue and the purple shadows in the crevices of the mountains increased with the fading light. A distant cry intruded as women herded their llamas into stone pens, pulling their shawls tight as the sun finally went down.

Inside our communal hut, the Swiss boy was suffering from altitude sickness. He lay on his straw sack, groaning, his mouth stuffed with

cocoa leaves which Quintin had recommended for nausea. In the darkness of the hut, tinny panpipe music emanated from somebody’s headphones. ‘For God’s sake!’ came exasperated French hisses. I could see my breath in the moonlight. It was minus 20 degrees outside.

The desert defied my senses. Mirages held inverted reflections of hills; lagoons changed their colour as the winds blew. Laguna Colorada appeared red; Laguna Verde’s grey mixed to blue and then to green as the temperature of its minerals rose. Next morning, high at the Sol de Manana, 4,800 m above sea level, the earth squealed scalding steam from geysers; sulphur clouds rose up, enveloping my friends whose silhouettes looked trapped against the early morning sun.

And in the midst of this wilderness, we encountered checkpoints - one of them a camouflaged military camp where the Bolivian flag battered madly in the wind and two soldiers, about 16, stood in tattered uniforms. They allowed the Israeli couple, who had just finished their own military service, to check out their rifles before receiving an angry dressing-down from their commander for handing over their weapons. Meekly, they checked our passports, lifted the road barrier and, returning to the car window, asked whether we had any sweets.

After five days and 870 kilometres, we returned in darkness to Uyuni. The outpost town looked, we agreed, almost welcoming and and the prospect of beers and a hot meal at El Rosedal total luxury. As we ordered, pan pipe music was playing in the background.

Film Reviews

Bridesmaids Available to own on DVD and Bluray from Nov 14th The Hangover for women? No; that’d be unfair. In truth, this film is eminently watchable, with a few unknown (to UK shores) performances that will have you laughing throughout. It’s a little absurd in places, but what yanky yuck-fest isn’t these days? Melissa McCarthy and (especially) Chris O’Dowd are the best things about it.

Green Lantern Coming soon to Rent

We all know the story, we’ve all been there before and can totally relate to it: Test Pilot for the U.S. (of course, because nothing ever happens anywhere else in the world) Air Force gets granted a mystical green ring that bestows all sorts of other-worldly powers and earns him a membership of an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace in the universe. I know, happens all the time. Probably worth a look if you’ve already given up on life.

The Adventures of Tintin Coming Soon to the Palace Cinema Boasting a voice cast of English Heavyweights like Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg and Daniel Craig, this modern retelling of an old Childhood favourite is probably this year’s finest animated production. Before he died in 1983, Hergé was quoted as having said that, should any filmmaker attempt to set Tintin to the big screen, Spielberg was the only man for the job...and that’s precisely what we’ve got. Whether you loved Tintin’s adventures as a child or not, this is well worth a

Art & Culture Events

Well, not any longer. Step forward authors, poets, readers and lovers of all things literary. Your time has come.

The first Manx Litfest will be staged from 27-30 September 2012 – a coming together of fine writing talent from around the British Isles, on a beautiful island which is pretty much smack bang in the centre of the British Isles.

The central hub of the festival will be based around the Villa Marina and Gaiety Theatre, with certain events taking place around the Island.

Who’s in the line-up? It’s still early days, but as a teaser we can reveal that RJ Ellory (www.rjellory.com), the acclaimed author of A Simple Act of Violence, which was named Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year 2010, will be

at the festival, along with Jasper Fforde (www.jasperfforde.com), creator of the ‘Thursday Next’ novels.

Throw into the mix Chris Ewan, Isle of Man-based author of the Good Thief’s Guide novels, and the line-up is starting to take shape.

What we need is the public’s support – follow us on twitter @manxlitfest, search for us on Facebook, follow the blog – manxlitfest.blogspot.com. And if you want to get involved in some capacity, drop us a line at [email protected].

We also want to hear from book/reading groups – get in touch, we want to pick your brains...

Manx Litfest 2012. It’s gonna rock your literary socks off.

For too long, there has been an imbalance in the Island’s artistic force. Recent years have seen audiences lap up talented musicians, singers, actors, artists and others of their ilk – both local names and

those paying a flying visit – but artistic types of a particular inclination have been, in the main, poorly served.

Manx-born Nigel Kinrade was educated at Douglas High School and went on to work at the MEA. During this time he had taken up photography as a hobby when he received his first camera for

his 21st birthday.

During the years he taught himself the art, never receiving any official training. Whilst at the MEA he also performed photography on the side, covering prestige events like the TT, Formula One and the Motorcycle Grand Prix across Europe.

In 1991 Nigel moved to the States with his wife, Nicola, and her family Hardinge. Once there he decided to pursue sports photography as a career, supporting himself with several different jobs until he could afford to do it full time. He entered NASCAR photography later in 1991, just at the time that the motor sport’s popularity and commercial success was booming.

Twenty years, and no small amount of airmiles later, and Nigel is now one of the top sports photographers in America covering NASCAR, Indy-car, Motorcycling and Ice Hockey; as well as providing corporate photography. His clients include race teams, auto manufacturers & websites, magazines and corporate sponsor marketing.

And this month he has achieved one of the highest accolades a sports photographer can by having his photography featured as the front cover and cover story of leading US sports magazine Sports Illustrated. This is a great recognition of Nigel’s ability and we think you’ll agree that he has a great eye for capturing the speed and excitement of big boys toys in the motor sport world.

He wouldn’t buy anything from the internet because he said that was cheating. You had to see the thing and feel it and then decide if you would give it sanctuary or not. It had to be special and only he could see why. He would proudly tell you about his latest find, show every detail, and then despair at your ignorance and lack of passion. He had more toys than the most spoilt kid I’d ever known. They were on display around the house but I had never seen him making jet engine or machine gun noises. I think I would; or maybe he does, but only when no one else is looking. That seems fair. No one would understand.

It is the same if you make guitar noises and strum imaginary instruments playing along to your favourite band, singing all the wrong words loudly and proudly; and you feel such a fool if you get caught.

Back to that awkward child with pent up ambition and so much energy but no idea and no talent and then red

faced stammer and mumble some sort of explanation to your captors. Why not? It is good not to be a sensible adult all the time. Sometimes you should just leap about and have fun.

Children have all the fun of imagination and innocence with no real worries about the outside world. It can be easy to look back with rose-tinted spectacles (I have a pair) and reinvent the past. Perhaps this is what happens. Something that was good becomes special or something bad is reclaimed to be good...then special. Something that was so important that will stay with you for the rest of your life and you need to have around to show people who you are; who you want to be and who you can be in the safety of your own home before you go out into the nasty cold careless outside world. And then be the nobody in a suit that does that job that nobody else understands and nobody cares about but takes up all your time and gives you no real satisfaction but you are too tired to

know any better for years and years and years...

(But beware the man who wears novelty ties because he may be a fool and could have got it so horribly wrong. And please never try to buy a present for anyone who collects things without checking first, because you will invariably get the wrong thing. Trust me it is true.)

A friend once told me the joy of being a grown up is that you can buy all the sweets and toys in the shop and no one can tell you off. He was a career man who worked ridiculous hours doing something very clever and spent his spare time trawling through junk shops, boot sales and toy fairs looking for that missing gem that would make his life worth living. His wife and child seemed to go along with it too.

Hello Boys!Product of the monthClinique Skin Supplies For Men Anti-fatigue cooling eye gelDo you have energetic children? A duvet-stealing wife? A sexually demanding mistress? Inconvenient early-risers as housemates? If black circles have taken up residence under your tired eyes this is an ace product. This eye gel is refreshing and strangely addictive so you can be brighteyed and bushy-tailed and no one will be any the wiser. Also can be combined withDermalogica Redness Relief for a double attack on the after-effects of a night out. You heard it here first... [£17.50]

Gone is the stigma associated with using cosmetics to enhance your looks, it’s now every man for himself. Welcome

news, I’m sure as it is probably getting a bit tiresome sneaking into the bathroom and blindly applying a random assortment of girls’ products to try and heal dry skin and random spots. If you’re working hard and playing hard you might as well utilise some of the great products for guys out there which will help you cheat aging and tiredness. There are some good new scents on the market as well. Here is our guide to a few of the essentials...

1. Sisley Eau d’IkarDo not be put off, this is NOT a perfume. It is a well-known fact that men are far more attractive when they smell good, and if you don’t have time to shower between work and a hot date then this man-fragrance will up the ante with minimum effort and maximum effect. [£50.75 for 50ml]

2. Aveda Men Pure-formance Exfoliating ShampooDandruff is never a desirable look and shoulder snowfall needs to be avoided at all costs. This shampoo gets rid of greasiness and grossness in one fell swoop, and it smells pretty good too. In a manly way, obviously. [£17 for 200ml]

3. Dermalogica Redness Relief SPF 20 UltraCalmingThe mid-week hangover can be the bane of your life, but there is no need for the pain to be made worse by everyone at the office noticing reddened skin. Apart from downing water or trying a hair of the dog, and keeping noise and light to a minimum, this product is vastly helpful in calming your complexion to a healthier-looking state. Do not be put off by the fact that it’s green, it genuinely works. [About £27 for 40ml]

4. Sisley Sisleÿum For Men Anti-Age Global RevitalizerGeorge Clooney is the obvious example of the man who ages well. Unfortunately, this does not hold true for all of us. There’s no need to follow in Shane Warne’s footsteps and go for Botox, this moisturiser will take care of your skin without resorting to needles. [£133.85]

5. Origins for Men Save the Males Multi-benefit MoisturizerSome men can wear a beard, others can’t. The grizzled look simply doesn’t work for everyone. Shaving has its perils, but stop your skin misbehaving by using Save the Males moisturizer to calm any razor-induced or other irritations. [£27 for 75ml]

6. Ted Baker The Right Tools For The Job Antiperspirant DeodorantFor any Casanovas out there who happen to find an unsuspecting female and subsequently don’t quite make it home one evening, this is an office-drawer essential. Effective without being overwhelming, this deodorant also has a rather aesthetically pleasing toolbox-inspired design. [£4.10 for 150ml]

7. Guerlain Homme Eau de ToiletteThis fragrance combines rum, mint and lime. This means it is essentially a mojito. For your skin. Best not to actually drink it though. [£33 for 30ml]

8. Fish Freezer Fishshape Frozen Firm Texturising CreamAn excellently minty product from the range created by Fish Salon in Soho. Very fresh indeed and won’t budge until you wash it out. [£5.99 for 100ml]

9. Origins for Men Skin Diver Active Charcoal Body ScrubRub-a-dub-dub, pass me the scrub. Sounds potentially vicious but really isn’t; and Origins deliver on their promise of “A buff, new bod when you step out the tub.” [£18 for 150ml]

DHI techniques have been studied over numerber of years and the results have come back as conclusive: the follicle implantation technique conveys a far superior success rate compared to the FUE placement technique. The main aim of this new, advanced technique is to increase the survival and growth rate of the hair follicles by diminishing their handling and the time they stay out of the skin, resulting in an aesthetically natural looking head of hair.

DHI has a track record of 100,000 elated clients from over 30 affiliated world wide sites. A true global leader in Hair Restoration Technologies, the past 40 years DHI has shown increasing growth and popularity as an innovative technique in hair restoration. DHI’s founder, K. P. Giotis, is a world-renowned specialist in the treatment of hair loss. The founder opened the first DHI VIP Clinic in Lavrio, Greece, branching out globally to Dubia, India, Japan, US and Europe. Boasting renowned doctors, newscasters and celebrities alike, the clinic remains true to its promise of committing to treat each and every client as an individual VIP of the clinic.DHI are very proud of their excellent client feedback, and I am

proudly one of them. As a dentist, my hair was never of issue, but when it comes to the promotion of a product there is nothing that can counter a visual outcome of a procedure. As a pioneer of the DHI technique, I embarked upon receiving the procedure myself. The results amazed me, and I am a walking testimonial for all those considering the technique. You wouldn’t have your hair cut by a hairdresser with a terrible hair cut, and I apply that ethos to my patients; it worked tremendously for me and I intend to grow my hair longer than anticipated and have further work done. I have personally tried and tested the DHI procedure, achieved phenomenal results and therefore work as the perfect advert, and practitioner, in raising the profile of the procedure.

The DHI treatment is simple: grafts are directly extracted from the donor area and are then placed into the recipient area, follicle by follicle. By optimizing smaller diameter punches and directly implanting the hair follicles, DHI has refined the procedure to become less invasive and therefore achieve higher success rates.

Human error is significantly reduced: the operation is less than three hours, greatly diminishing human fatigue; hair is no longer handled which can increase the

failure rate; survival of the hair follicles is optimal as there is no longer a need for procession under the microscope. There is a reduced risk of infection: the procedure is safe, efficient, with less traumas and less bleeding and the requirement for local anesthesia eliminated. Minimal effort, with maximum results.

It is imperative the placement of the follicles during the procedure is correct: this is what guarantees the client an aesthetically natural looking result. DHI allows the hair to be designed: angle, depth and direction of each single hair is considered, thus creating a fully natural result. Hair growth is almost immediate as the follicles enter the anagen phase. The new hair will continue to grow naturally for life.

DHI is a simple procedure; a technique that eliminates the use of the scalpel, there is no scarring and it is completely pain free. The procedure is popular amongst men with male pattern baldness, but its potential now starting to be realized by women suffering from androgenetic alopecia. Wonderfully natural results are guaranteed in just a single visit to the DHI clinic at Tracey Bell and I stand as the greatest advocate.

This Panasonic version has a bright focused light for precision and accuracy so you can see into the depths of your ear where the real big bad boys are growing. Tidal TreatsOn a small island like ours we get so used to seeing beaches and the accompanying seaweed, so it’s easy to forget that scientists and beauticians the world over use various kinds of kelp to create products like the new Thalgo Nutrition range.

Seaweeds are ‘super-plants’ with exceptional nutritional properties – they absorb all the beneficial nutrients found in seawater and are highly concentrated in vitamins and minerals. Thalgo harnesses the incredible properties of seaweed for their beauty, slimming and well-being benefits, which naturally complement Thalgo spa treatments and products. You can choose from Beauty (Anti-ageing, Moisturising, Hair & Nails), Well-being (to detox your body), Slimming (to give you an extra slimming boost from within), Women 45+ (to combat the effects of the menopause); and Sun (to boost your tan). This kind of therapy is shown to work inside and out, and ideal for a post-holiday detox session!

TweezersThere’s no easy way to say this, but if you have a monobrow and you don’t keep it in check it looks really, really bad. People who go for the monobrow as a lifestyle choice also choose mankinis - they’re a weird bunch, don’t join them. Invest in a good pair of tweezers to save you hacking at your hairs for ages. Tweezerman are super sharp making it easy to grab even the peskiest of hairs.

By mid October this year we’ve already been forecast a harsh and bitterly cold winter, so what better this November than to enjoy your homemade Hot Toddy – whether you’ve a winter sniffle or not! This Cocktail has many different guises in many different cultures, but we’ll stick to the traditional recipe here, with plenty of Healthy Vitamin C, Soothing Honey and Anaesthetising Alcohol.

IngredientsTake a teaspoon of runny Manx honey and a measure of whiskey in a heat-proof glass or mug and then drop in two cloves and half a cinnamon stick. (You can use ground cinnamon and cloves here, but if you do then it’ll be grainy and won’t taste as fresh). Top it off with water that’s just off boiling point. Finally add a good slice of lemon and some of the juice, stirring to balance the sweetness of the honey with the bitterness of the lemon. Enjoy when it’s no longer hot enough to burn!

TipsWhen pouring the hot water into the glass, be sure to have a teaspoon in there. This conducts the heat away from the glass and stops it from cracking. Don’t using boiling water. And don’t be too heavy handed with the cloves, as these impart a slightly medicinal taste if too strong. Don’t be scared to try a little Star Anise either. And remember, this is alcoholic, so don’t mix with medicines.

A couple of reds to sort the men from the boys come from Scala Dei winery in Priorat in Catalonia. A couple of hours drive south west from Barcelona up in the hills, lies an old Carthusian monastery, now the home of this beautiful winery.

The countryside here is stunning with narrow roads winding through the mountains with sheer drops at the side. If you are driving through the area, it’s best to keep your eyes closed unless you are the driver of course!

The climate is dry, protected by the mountains. This contributes to the production of red wines that are big and intense, deep purple in colour, packed full of black fruit, herbal and spice flavours from the old Garnatxa (the Catalan spelling of Garnacha) and Carinena grapes. These have to dig deep into the steep llicorella (brown slate with quartzite) hillsides to get any nutrients. Yields are naturally low as the soil is poor and the rainfall

minimal thus giving massive concentration of flavour.

Negre is the youngest wine and the most approachable style. Made from old Garnatxa vines it is intense and robust with flavours of fig, coffee, chocolate and blackberry fruit and makes a wonderful partner to a rich casserole on a cool autumnal evening. At £14, it is extremely good value for money.

Big brother, the Cartoixa (£30), is produced in smaller quantities and is even more concentrated. A wild blend of Garnatxa, Syrah and Cabernet aged in oak barrels, it has intense flavours of mint, bitter cherry, chocolate, blackberries and cloves, that combine with a minerality, which makes you just take that extra mouthful. This is mind-blowing wine – not for everyday, but for those (boys?!) nights in with a huge fillet steak.

There’s a general notion that the girls drink delicate white wine and the boys drink big reds! Whether that’s true or not, it’s

certainly the time of year to be thinking about the meaty reds rather than the delicate whites.

The Islands’ only commercial mushroom farm decided to dub October; ‘Manx Mushroom Month’. Greeba Farm Ltd., based in Crosby, naturally chose October because it’s a key season for mushrooms. But worry not: the farm grows a wide range of mushrooms all year round in carefully climate controlled growing rooms – so you won’t struggle even after Manx Mushroom Month!

To celebrate the dubbing, Greeba Farm is holding a series of special events and working together with a number of key customers to bring the delights of Manx mushrooms to one and all.

Many of the top local restaurants and caterers choose Manx mushrooms because of their superb flavour and freshness. And in October they got even more creative with one of our most versatile and nutritious foods – mushrooms. Those putting that special effort in to celebrate the first Greeba Farm Manx Mushroom Month in October included: In Ramsey, The Spice of India featured Greeba mushroom dishes each weekend, and had a big focus on mushrooms at the popular end-of-the-month vegetarian evening (27th),

where Kathy Irwin of Greeba Farm cooked together with the restaurant’s chefs. Milntown restaurant also put mushroom specials on during the month.

In Douglas, L’experience icluded mushroom specials on its menus throughout October. Others who created Manx mushroom specials were Fourteen North, The Welbeck Hotel, McFarlane’s, The Courthouse Restaurant, Tanroagan and Portofino.

In the South, The Abbey Restaurant in Ballasalla kept it simple and showed how choosing quality ingredients really shines through, with their heart-warming lunch of Greeba mushrooms on toast.

Meanwhile our local hospital and school dinners also joined in with Noble’s Hospital exploring opportunities to cook up Manx mushroom treats for both staff and patients during October, and the Isle of Man Schools dinner service worked with Greeba Farm to see how they could make the most of mushrooms on school menus to encourage children to eat them as part of a healthy diet. Both organisations are great supporters of local producers and committed to using quality local ingredients.

Shoprite and Robinson’s have been very supportive working with Greeba Farm and were able to do some in-store tastings during the month.

The Talking TV Guide: Ian Sharpe

Isle of Man Entrepreneurs on the sofa

What led to the creation of The Talking TV Guide?

I am visually impaired and had become increasingly frustrated with the inaccessibility of websites. I wanted to create an example of inclusive design that would not only be useful, but would also serve as a reference for organisations interested in improving the usability of their sites and services.

What did you do before creating The Talking TV Guide?

I spent ten years at Sema Group, a global IT services company, working my way up the technical career ladder on projects ranging from Facial Image Recognition for the Home Office to the UK national land administration system for DEFRA.

In 2004, I set up my own IT consultancy, Sharpe Solutions, providing strategic and technical support for my primary client, a start-up which became Europe’s leading provider of Tele-Interviewing services for the insurance industry.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve learned?

Life isn’t fair.

What would you attribute your success to?

I like to win - hence 25 years in international sport. Winning is all about commitment, passion and focus, and this carries over into my work. My passion is to make the web easier to use and I think the Talking TV Guide reflects this.

What are your plans for the future?

We’ve created the world’s first interactive, web-based, Talking TV Guide; the world’s first Talking Blog. We’ve also developed Virtual Speech and Virtual Translation technology which can be easily integrated into any website, world-wide. The implications are massive - so watch this space!

Boston Group has announced three key additions to its team: Gary Ormond, Douglas Kelly and Jodie-Lee McFarlane. The business has ambitious expansion plans following the appointment of Greg Ellison as its Chief Executive Officer earlier this year. Gary Ormond joined Boston in July, taking on the role of Assistant Manager. He brings with him a wealth of experience in the provision of trust and corporate administration services. Doug Kelly has been appointed as a Senior Client Accountant. Jodie-Lee McFarlane, who started with Boston in August as a Client Accountant, graduated in 2006 from Northumbria University with a degree in Accounting and Finance. Greg Ellison said, “I am delighted to welcome Gary, Doug and Jodie to Boston Group.”

John Clucas was recently appointed as Business Manager of Orchard Recruitment in early September, and has spent a couple of months meeting with a range of companies. Despite never having worked in recruitment, he is drawing on a vast array of experience to ensure he drives the business forward in a positive light.

“l believe good working relationships are established through honesty and commitment; always under promising and over achieving. Communication is the key that keeps the door to good relationships open. I agree that skills and experience are important. They are necessary in the recruiting process, but the cause of headaches and performance issues goes well beyond being able to do the job, it’s a person’s ability to fit in and being in the role for the right reasons.”

Lieutenant Governor, His Excellency Mr Adam Wood swore in Chief Minister Allan Bell in October after the 27 to 3 majority vote elected him ahead of Mr Karran.

Allan Robert Bell was first elected to the House of Keys as an independent for Ramsey in 1984, and was then appointed Minister for Tourism & Transport in 1986. In 1991 he assumed the position of Minister of Industry until 1996 when he was appointed Minister of Home Affairs until 2001. A nine year spell as Minister of the Treasury followed; until his appointment to the newly created role of Minister for Economic Development in 2010.

Educated at Ramsey Grammar School, the Honourable Mr Bell was involved in both banking and retail before seeking and achieving election in 1984. Speaking to the BBC recently, the new Chief Minister spoke boldly and positively of the present and future:

“The Isle of Man has done incredibly well over the last five years. We’ve ridden the credit crunch, the banking crisis, the world recession, the collapse of Kaupthing and all the problems that have flowed from that. We are one of the few countries in Europe that hasn’t faced recession, we haven’t got external borrowing, and unemployment has stayed very low all the way through this.”

This is absolutely correct, and something we should be proud of.

“We do have a major challenge in rebalancing the books. We will lose in a couple of years time roughly a third of our income; that’s not going to be easily absorbed, no matter how we try to struggle with the current expenditure levels. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to diminish the quality of service that we provide, but it might...mean that we have to provide it in a different way to what people have been used to.”

Any serious shopping list for bigger boys’ toys may include a soft-top Bentley, the latest offering by Learjet or that yacht by Mondo Marine finished in the highest grade Burmese teak supplied from renewable resources. Glossy catalogues displaying the names of Bugatti or Maybach, Bennetti, Cessna or Beechcraft Baron also typically occassion a profoundsense of well being in those fortunate enough to view them. Manufacturers’results appear to indicate that recession notwithstanding the luxury goodsmarket continues to thrive. Clearly luxury toys must still be appearing oncertain Christmas wish lists this year.

Without wanting to be too “bah humbug” however, and with Christmas rightaround the corner, you could do well to remember the remarks of socialiteIvana Trump:“ The second happiest day of my life was when I bought my yacht. The happiest day of my life was when I sold it.”

Considering any large acquisition therefor requires your inner adult to be firmly back in charge. That would include takeing the time to discuss your plans thoroughly beforehand with some suitable professionals, ones of course who are not purveyors of costly toys. It is essential that suitable arrangements are in place well before any expensive purchase is made.

Most often the asset is registered in the name of a company. There are manyadvantages to such an arrangement. If your yacht or car or aeroplane is registered to, and belongs to, a company, the first advantage’ (as so aptly described by Mrs Trump) is the relative ease of disposal.Provided your toy is the only asset held by that company, you are able to simply sell the company owning the asset by transferring the shares of the company to the new owner against payment of the purchase price.

The actual sale transaction is thus relatively easy and inexpensive. Delays and difficulties reregistering the particular

asset to the new owner should be overcome, since it is the company itself which changes hands as opposed to that particular asset registered to it. In addition (and of importance to many) ownership can be quite anonymous if your shares in the company are held in the names of nominees. Corporate Service Providers can readily offer this arrangement.

A yacht can be chartered as well as an aeroplane, and the income stream itgenerates from charter can be a good one.Owners of exotic or vintage carscan also benefit from income derived through commercial hire. Events such asweddings are a ready resource, and indeed film companies may also be interested. Of course expenses will be incurred maintaining your toy, and doubtless will be high. These are a legitimate business expenses however, and are thus set off for tax purposes against the income accruing from any charter or rental arrangement. The potential business prospects also justify the expense of the purchase rather neatly.

Ownership through a company has other advantages too. It is a secure and usually well defined and regulated way to enjoy co-ownership of an asset.

Where two or more people are responsible for the purchase price of the item and will share the maintenance costs the dealings between them require planning and forethought. Everyone is familiar with the rather loosely defined race horse and fishing syndicates, sadly and all-too-oftenresponsible for the end of a number of friendships. Similar difficultiesshould be avoided if the relationship and its affairs are well defined; usually in a shareholders agreement prepared prior to incorporation of the company. In addition, the Memorandum and Articles of a company are designed in such a way, so as to avoid any future doubts as to any particular individual’s rights and responsibilities.

Company ownership can also provide effective estate and successionplanning. With larger and longer term assets such efficiencies are important. When ownership of the asset remains in your own name, that asset forms part of your personal estate and is dealt with by will or intestacy. However, your company shares may be transferred to another at any time in accordance with your then wishes.

In the case of joint ownership of the asset, company ownership can be a realadvantage too, particularly should your co-owner not want to find your share has transferred to another he feels to be unsuitable. He can instead have a pre-emptive right to purchase your share of the company himself. You may also define in general to whom the shares in the company may be offered, so as to exclude anyone the owners may not wish to have an interest.

A company can also offer some legal protection from liability for damagesoccasioning to others while using that car or yacht or aeroplane. This may not help in every case depending on the particular circumstances which occassioned the claim, but any protection you might personally gain from life’s myriad mishaps is worth considering beforehand.

With your affairs in good order you can expect the day your new toy arrivesto be the happiest.

We are already more than three quarters of the way through a year most stock market investors would rather forget. How many times have we read headlines in the newspapers or watched television reports and been left with “Tumbling world markets”, “stock prices slashed”, “millions wiped off” in our minds?

However, it is worth noting that times of extreme stock market volatility do provide potential investment opportunities. There are many companies whose share prices are at relatively suppressed levels at present, offering attractive yields and excellent growth prospects. So maybe you can have your cake and eat it?

What about the opportunities to invest overseas? If we travel a few hundred miles from London to Paris, Frankfurt or Zurich or even further afield to New York or Hong Kong, there are global investment opportunities that are

available to all, whether that be buying shares in companies directly or by gaining regional exposure through an exchange traded fund.

Investing in foreign companies can be an effective way to diversify your portfolio and can be lucrative but the rewards do come with additional risks. The first to consider is exchange rate risk. If you don’t have funds available in the domestic currency, your stock broker will be able to buy or sell shares on overseas exchanges for settlement in your desired “base” currency.

Exchange rate movements between your base currency and the currency of your chosen investment country will impact on the valuation of your holding. Political or economic instability and differences in reporting and taxation of dividends also need to be considered.

With increasing globalization there has been a tremendous up trend in overseas investing as clients look beyond London and become more aware of and more familiar with overseas stocks and the opportunities that they offer. Not only can you own a Hermes Scarf but you could become direct shareholder in the company itself!

QE2 student Nick Corlett, 15, was triumphant in the End 2 End race on Sunday 18th September – taking home the trophy for 1st place in the Junior Category at the End 2 End presentation; an improvement on last year’s second place. Although as a Junior he could only compete up to St. Johns, Nick actually went on to complete the entire course in just over three and a half hours. Local bank Conister have continued their sponsorship of the young Manx sportsman to help support his success, providing funds to help his travel to and from competitions; as well as a specialised ‘Epic’ mountain bike worth £4,500.

Over the season Nick has competed in 9 races in the UK and has placed in the top 10 for all of them, which means that he is now ranked 9th in the UK at a junior level. Closer to home, current under-16 Manx Road Race Champion Nick won the Summer Marathon mountain bike race at Archallagan Plantation; when he was up against 33 adult riders – several of which were in the 2011 Island Games Team.

Nick has applied for entry into the Olympic Development Squad, and hopes to follow in the footsteps of Manxman Mark Cavendish.

Lloyds TSB give away Olympic ticketsLloyds TSB, the exclusive Banking and Insurance partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, surprised children from the Isle of Man Youth Cycling League with tickets to the Olympic test cycling event in February 2012.

Lloyds awarded the tickets at the Isle of Man Youth Cycling League annual presentation on Sunday 9 October 2011, which saw over 425 children come to the Villa Marina with their families to celebrate their sporting achievements over the previous year. Youth cycling is an incredibly popular and successful sport on the Isle of Man

and the Youth League has been encouraging children between the ages of 2 and 16 to participate in the sport for over twenty years.

The tickets were awarded to the top riders from the Under 16, Under 14 and Under 12 racing bikes categories. The lucky winners were Anna Christian, Jake Kelly, Breeshey Cain, Mathew Bostock, Nathan Draper, Eleanor Davies and William Draper, who will all go down to London next February with their parents to see some of the finest cyclists in the world compete in the Olympic Test at the newly-completed London velodrome.

Starting with the 2012 edition - which takes place on Saturday June 23 - the great annual walking event of the Manx calendar will be known as the Manx Telecom Parish Walk.

“The Parish Walk is a wonderful example of the Isle of Man’s passion for sport and community spirit,” said David Smith, MT Marketing Director. “It’s an incredible sporting contest, a great community event, and it generates thousands of pounds every year for Island charities with so many of the walkers raising funds. All of these aspects of the Parish Walk mean that it has become an integral part of Island life, and becoming title sponsor of the event is a natural progression for Manx

Telecom as we have provided timing and results services since 2007. As the Island’s leading telecommunications company we are very proud to sponsor such an important event in the Island’s sporting and community calendar.”

Manx Telecom’s timing services to the Parish Walk allow the friends and relatives of competitors to track their progress around the 85-mile course and receive text updates as they pass checkpoints. The company will continue to provide these services and is working with Parish Walk organisers to look at ways of making further improvements to the event.

Bike BlingPictures & Words| Richard Allen

Straight from the Tour de France to your high street bike shop - amateur cyclists never have long to wait for the latest technology to hit the shelves.

Imagine going into your local car dealership and driving out in a Red Bull F1 car. It’s something petrol heads will only ever be able to dream about. But cyclists (with a big bag of cash) can go into their local bike

shop and ride away with a machine good enough to ride to victory in the Tour de France.

Working at the Bikestyle cycle shop in Bucks Road, Douglas, Gavin Quayle sees amateur riders buying road racing machines costing anything from £500 to £5,000 or more from big name brands such as Giant, Scott, Pinarello and Cervélo. He says: “The average club rider who wants a bike for sportive events or local road races will usually spend anything from £1,000 up to £3,000. For that you will get a really good quality road bike - usually with a carbon fibre frame - and good components and wheels. But if riders want to spend more they can get a bike good enough for a pro rider.”

In fact, because the UCI (the world governing body of cycle racing) has strict rules about the specifications of pro bikes it’s possible for amateur riders to get a racing machine that’s even better than the pros use. For example, the UCI insist that road racing bikes have a minimum

weight limit of 15 pounds - but if you’ve got the money to spend - and choose frames and components carefully - it’s possible to get your local bike shop to build a machine much lighter than this limit. And in cycling, light weight bikes mean more speed up hills.

So, if you shell out a few grand for a top notch road bike, what do you get for your money? What’s so special about these computer designed engineering masterpieces?

Gavin and I arranged to take a look around the Manx Museum’s ‘Our Sporting Life’ exhibition, where on display is Mark Cavendish’s 2008 Tour de France machine which took him to victory on four stages. The Giant TCR Advanced Team bike may be three years old, but examining it in detail is a good way get a close look at the type of bike used by the world’s best riders.

The sleek carbon fibre framed machine is the bicycle equivalent of a Savile Row suit. It’s custom built to suit the rider and made to fit his physique and riding style. From the frame design to the height of the saddle and the length of the cranks and handlebar stem, each component is chosen so that the rider can race hundreds of miles and make sure that every ounce of power put through the pedals is transformed into speed.

In a sprint finish, Cavendish’s profile is unmistakable as he crouches down over the bike with his nose almost touching the handlebars. This style makes him more aerodynamic in a sprint than most of his rivals and is a factor in his remarkable success rate in winning bunch sprints. The Giant bike is built to suit this style with a short head tube and steerer column, but there are other factors which go into designing the bike specifically for the Manx Missile. Gavin says: “As Cav produces a massive amount of power in a sprint finish, the frame is strenghtened around the bottom bracket so that there’s no flex and no loss of power when he’s sprinting.”However, if the frame is too rigid and inflexible then riding 2,000 miles around France in three weeks would be unbearable as every bump in the road would send shock waves through the frame and the rider. So the Giant experts used a special carbon fibre weave to give the frame the perfect balance between performance and comfort.

Electronic gears are one of the biggest innovations in bike technology in recent years. Instead of moving a lever to change gear, the Di2 system is operated by buttons on the handlebars which control electronic motors on the derailleurs to change gear. The Di2 system constantly adjusts the derailleurs so that gear changes are always perfect and, say the manufacturers, therefore eliminates any need for manual adjustments which are required by mechanical systems from time to time.

Shimano’s Dura Ace Di2 components are not cheap - you’ll pay more than £2,000 for a groupset (that’s a complete set of bike components including gears, brakes & cranks, and drivetrain). But for Cycling Nuts that exclusive price tag just seems to make the kit even more desirable - it’s the ultimate in cycling bling for the weekend racers who want to have the same kit as their Tour de France heroes.

So, last year’s Tour de France winning machine will be available for anyone to buy next year. And at the moment - even despite the recession - there’s no shortage of buyers for the latest kit.

In fact, because the UCI (the world governing body of cycle racing) has strict rules about the specifications of pro bikes it’s possible for amateur riders to get a racing machine that’s even better than the pros use.”

HARDWARE MotoringNewsMust have #1:DAILY DRIVEThe first of my three fuel-guzzling boys’ toys must haves is obvious, because you need to get around, right? But I’m not talking about a clapped out small-capacity hatchback. Oh no, you deserve better than that.

Plus who knows, you may even have a dog. Once you’ve sourced a suitable car that is equally at home collecting said canine com-panion from the vet, transporting lady-friends to and from dinner engagements or being thrashed around a racetrack, then you may progress onto one or both of the following items below.

Must have #2: TROPHY TRUCK

Most popular in the USA, trophy trucks are mostly found re-shaping deserts at an unholy rate. Take THAT, Mother Nature!

Often 2 wheel drive, fitted with a large V8 and loosely resembling a mass-produced pickup truck in body style and badging, trophy trucks are pretty much the fastest off-road vehicles going. Forget the stateside specials though, because this contender from Volkswagen that dropped into my inbox (and straight into the ‘never, ever forget this’ section of my mind where vivid images of all the best franken-motors reside) has got to be king of the hill.

Built to compete in both the Baja 1000 and Pikes Peak ‘race to the sky’ hillclimb, and very loosely based on the Touareg and with VAG’s 6 litre V12 TDi powerplant putting out unfathomable amounts of torque, this is what it looks like in ‘naked’ form, underneath its protective, Touareg-esque shell. Personally, I think it looks ten times as mean like this, resembling a pimped-out Kubelwagen. If this had existed in the 90s, you just know Moesha would have had to have one.

Must have #3:FAST BIKE

There are three schools of motoring thought; those who only entertain four wheels, those who like getting cold and wet exclusively on two wheels, and those who prefer to both have their cake AND eat it, regardless of the number of wheels.

With two-wheeled opinions varying so vastly, and despite not being much of a sportsbike kind of guy myself, this is the bike that people just haven’t seemed to stop talking about for the past couple of years: BMW’s S1000RR. 193hp (enough for a car, let alone a bike), stunning looks and breathtaking performance all readily on tap and with extras like anti-wheelie for those of us whose testicles don’t get transported on palletboards; it seems like a winner to me. And if you fancy taking a look at the BMW S1000RR, Jason Griffiths Motorcycles in Castletown is the place to do that.

NEW INTERCEPTOR

Worried at first, having discovered that the people who now own Bowler and are planning to produce the new Spyker range will be responsible for the new generation of Jensen Interceptor, I’m slowly coming round to the idea. Thankfully, the fishbowl rear window will remain. Phew.

THE BRITISH SUPER SUV

Formed by a group of motoring enthusiasts, backed by a selection of in-ternational investors, designed by an engineer who was partly responsi-ble for Jaguar’s XJ220 supercar way back when I was of the age to want a poster of such a vehicle on my bedroom wall, and with former F1 driver Johnny Herbert on board, Eterniti Motors sounds like a party!

Their first offering, the Hemera, sounds a bit like something that could be responsible for a sore bottom, but owing to the docks for two iPads and a drinks chiller in its limousine-inspired interior, that being a reality is rather doubtful. Eterni say that by combining this luxurious interior with performance and space they will be creating a brand new motoring niche, leading me to believe that it’s probably fair to say they’ve never seen a Porsche Cayenne.

THE START OF A NEW ERA?

Having borne the Defender moniker for 21 years and having remained essentially unchanged aesthetically for closer to 31 years, Land Rover have finally hinted at the direction that the original’s successor could be going, in the form of the DC100, seen here.

At its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Land Rover have confirmed that they will release a new Defender model for 2015, citing this as the beginning of a 4 year journey into the development of the new vehicle.

Toys for Big BoysFull of hot air? Then this isn’t for you

If you talk the talk when it comes to winter sports, and still want to walk the walk once you’ve conquered your very own patch of this season’s backcountry you might want to look into investing in one of these. After all, a probe and a shovel are only helpful if at least one rider in your group isn’t buried under tonnes of snow when you’re caught in an avalanche.

Pull the cord to rapidly inflate the airbags contained within the backpack and the manufacturer says you’ll be floating on top of the snow within 2 seconds of it first hitting you, massively increasing your odds of survival. There’s plenty of scientific thinking behind the concept, but rather than bore you with things even I don’t under-stand, I’ve managed to boil the facts, figures and statis-tics down to one simple statement: Buy one of these and you’re less likely to die a snowy death; Easy.

The world’s latest little Wally

If luxury yachts are right up your shipping canal but you haven’t heard of Wally, you must have spent the past few years bobbing about somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle.

From the almost impossibly overbearing monolithic Wally 118, that blurs the lines between a powerboat and a luxury cruiser, with its stunningly con-temporary interior and 17,000hp turbine engine; to sailing yachts that are the epitome of modern seatravel; a range of cruisers; and all the way down to this: the brand new Wally One. The design of these machines couldn’t possibly be described as anything short of breathtaking.

Use it as a tender, for short trips away, relaxing, diving, watersports or any other marine activity that requires either agile handling or a capacious deck area - both of which are attributes of the Wally One.

Of course, agile handling is of little use without the power to fully exploit it. Cue not one, but two Yammar twin-turbo V8s providing over 600 horse-power to the 13 metre carbon fibre hull, designed to pierce the waves and provide a smooth ride whatever the sea state, without ever compromising the luxury that is at the heart of each and every Wally creation.

There’s also a well trimmed double berth below deck and prices range from between 580,000€ to 620,000€. Get saving!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a...Vampire?When jumping out of a plane just doesn’t cut it anymore, or your jumps keep getting cancelled thanks to bad weather, you really need a plan B. No, I’m not talking about a stocky bloke with a surprisingly decent singing voice despite his inability to talk the Queen’s English under normal circumstances, I mean wingsuits.

Jump off anything high enough and be your very own aeroplane. If you’ve not seen these in action then get onto the manufacturer’s website below because some of the footage shown surpasses ‘breathtaking’ and takes you straight to heart-in-mouth craziness. Feeling brave?

Chocks Away Old Boy!Surely, the ultimate boy’s toy and man-project all rolled into one has to be building your very own aeroplane in your very own man-shed?

Building, flying and most probably crashing kit aeroplanes is a big thing over the pond in the United States and there are plenty of kits out there to choose from. You can choose how deeply you’d like to get involved in the build by either buying partly or pre-assembled sections or for extra brag-ging points down the pub (not less than 48 hours before flying though please) choose to build it all yourself down to every last nut and bolt.

With a choice of car or aero-specific engines depending on the kit, it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg either. Which is a bonus, as you’ll want a full set of both to fly it with.

The aircraft below, from Zenith Air, needs a mere 88 metres to take off, will cruise at 112mph up to a maximum ceiling of 16,000ft and will allow you to fly 320 miles in about 6hrs, or twice that if you go for the ‘extended range’ option with larger fuel tanks. Obviously you’ll need a license first, but training can be obtained on island (or should that be ‘above’?) through the Manx Flyers Aero Club.

Surely I can’t be serious? Well I am, and don’t call me Shirley.

PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN & HIT THE STROLL IN THESE...

With all of the hype surrounding Citroen’s DS3 of late, what could be better for any self-respecting hip owner and owner-wan-nabe than the shoes to match?

Citroen have teamed up with Gio-Goi to create a high-top limited edition shoe based on the look and trim of the car - in this case black with orange detailing - and the manufacturers say they’re the perfect complement to each other, making a great driving shoe.

The pattern on the sole is a reflection of the curves seen on the DS3’s alloy wheels, and with only 100 pairs being manufactured (with only a handful of those available to purchase) they’re sure to be a hit on the streets.

If you can manage to get hold of a pair ex-pect to pay around £120. They’ll undoubt-edly sell out fast so checking eBay might be a good plan!

Making Money Mobile

Just when you thought that mobile phones couldn’t pack in any more features, a new one comes along. The developing technology known as Near-Field Commu-nications (NFC) has reached the point of take-off and is coming to a phone near you, very soon.

With NFC all sorts of data can be sent and received, but the application that is getting everyone excited is the use of NFC to make cash transactions. The ques-tion is: Will this make a real difference? Yes, paying for things may become faster, and you won’t need to use your card and PIN; but can it really be transformative?

Mobile marketing

At the 2011 Mobile World Congress Eric Schmidt, Google CEO, explained that the mobile wallet is so powerful because of its links with marketing:

“I’m walking down the street and I need pants [trou-sers]. My phone has an NFC chip. It knows where I am. It tells me about two stores, one to the left with a 20% discount and one to the right with a 30% [discount]. It is programmed to know I am a cheapskate so points me to the right and the store knows what pants I want.”

It is clear how it could become a marketer’s dream, but the industry is far from convinced. Whilst it is acknowledged that the technology works securely, the drive for mobile wallets isn’t coming from customers. Instead, it is the NFC industry itself (phone manufac-turers, card companies and banks) that is pushing the development of this new form of payment.

Critics have pointed out that payment forms which

aren’t customer-focused rarely take off, and the lack of NFC technology in the new iPhone 4S has been viewed as an indication that Apple is sceptical. On the other hand the majority of major phone manufacturers, including Google, are launching NFC enabled hand-sets over the coming year.

Three of the UK’s major mobile networks are work-ing together to speed up adoption of NFC payment technologies. Their SIM-based system locks your wallet within your SIM card, so users can switch NFC enabled handsets without any problems. This would give companies and organisations the ability to cre-ate secure mobile versions of anything from credit or debit cards to loyalty and membership schemes; and allow the customers to pay for almost anything with their phone.

A game of trust

Soon, we will have the means to make mobile pay-ments - because NFC is being packaged with mobile phones - but if there’s nowhere to use it, take up will be limited. A few chains accept NFC payments but, as with the initially slow take-up of online transactions a decade ago, it’s the consumer who will make the ulti-mate choice. Trust will be everything, and at first NFC will be vulnerable to any security failures that catch the headlines and cast doubt upon its integrity. With NFC-enabled handsets hitting the high street now, the next few years will be crucial to the adoption of mobile payments. Not only will shops need to install the technology to read NFC but - most importantly – customers will have to see the benefits and learn to trust that their money is safely stored in their phone.
