Poetry: Janet DeBar

48 Mendocino Arts Magazine

In Praise of SourdoughWild captured yeast. Gift from the airWatch flour and water metamorphosizeMy hands do all of the workMy hands do none of the real workYeast, yeast, yeast from the airthe prime mover

Feral once now forced into domestic service It lives in a little glass cageprisoner of the refrigeratorFrom time to time I feed it more flourI give it some waterIt lives; it flourishesCaptive yeast

It makes me its captiveLocked into my house by natural timeOnce the rising starts it locks me into my kitchenBe aware we are always locked in timeThis is one of yeast’s lessons

Then when it has done its work, poor yeast, the oven assassinates it

That little colony living in doughthat great uprising from a single cell breeding and doublinggone. Gone to alcohol that stings my eyeswhen I crack open the ovento see results of yeast’s magnificent sacrifice

How risen! Flour and water swolleninto a new substanceCrosshatch markings spread wideby yeast’s insistent action

This is the bread of angels!Gabriel is a yeast cellannouncing not to the earbut to the nosethat flour and water have truly risenTake, eat. And praise the airPraise yeast that has given its life for youfor me, for all who share this loaf

The Lover of BoneOne woman sets up herself as queen of soulsthe arbiter of the bone’s creationPoor flesh and blood, encumbering bone,Let it go down— the rotting stinking burden.Bone glistens, pure bone after marrow’s suckedHollow bone can be a pan pipe.

One woman sets up herself as arbiter of boneShe ranks the hues of alabasterStanding before the despots’ mountainsskulls towering over hers, she picks the onesthat most delight her by their vacant wisdom

One woman sets up skulls and souls as equal. She gathers counters for her strange equationShe roams the killing fields of Gettysburgto see how flesh cast off may rise up marble.War’s her provisioner, sullen, hardly civilalthough the bones he trades inwhisper flatteries to her

One woman claims she hears bones whisper. She claims them as her intimates, her loversOn moonless nights the breastbone harp strings trembleshrinking her hand’s percussive strike.Frail hollow bones her breath can shattercreep back to mother skeleton.A lover of bone is never gentle

One woman sets up herself for failureShe vows her bones will shine like alabasterHer eyes will never see her bones

She summons scattered bones to rise togetherOne woman claims herself as her own savior

Janet DeBar has written poetry since she could write. She grew up in West Virginia, attended college in Wooster, Ohio, and continued in graduate school at Stanford. She has worked with William Everson at The Limn Kiln Press in Santa Cruz during the production of Granite and Cypress. Janet has now lived for 30 years on the North Coast where she enjoys reading her poems at local venues.
