There is still time to complete the 2020 Census! Completing the Census is safe, secure, takes only a few minutes, and will help the community receive services for the next decade.

As of May 23, the self-reporting rate (SRR) for the City of Galt was 69.7%. The final SRR for Galt in the 2010 Census was only 73%, which means nearly 30% of people were not counted. There is still time to complete your Census survey and make a difference in funding and programs for the city.

Census enumerators will soon start following up with households who have not yet responded. Visit https://2020census.gov or call 844-330-2020 (English)/844-468-2020 (Spanish).

Residential Containers

Location CodeThe City of Galt would like to remind its residents that long-term storage of garbage cans in the street and in public view is prohibited. Per Galt Municipal Code 8.16.150, garbage containers must be placed at curbside or as close as reasonably possible but in no event any distance exceeding ten feet or in the alley if appropriate; not to obstruct any drainage ditch, culvert, waterway, sidewalk, mailbox or regularly traveled footpath. Garbage containers may not be left at curbside, or in any location visible from a public or private street or road, for over thirty hours. This means avoiding storage in front yards and side yards viewable from the street. If a garbage can be seen from the street in a location exceeding 30 hours, it is in violation of the residential containers location code. Please remove garbage cans from the curb in a timely manner and ensure that the storage of garbage cans is not visible from the street.

Galt MarketCommunity PlanThe Galt Market Community Plan (GMCP) marches on, but is in a temporary holding pattern. As you know, the City has been exploring the reuse of the Galt Market grounds and surrounding properties in an attempt to improve Market operations. The City held a public meeting on March 9, 2020 to gather community input on concepts for the market and surrounding properties. The City also had an online survey soliciting input for the project. The next step for the project was to present the ideas from the community along with preliminary design concepts to the public at a meeting on March 30. Then, the coronavirus hit and changed everyone’s plans. As a result of the COVID 19 Stay at Home Health Order, and the inability to hold public gatherings, we put the GMCP on hold until we can conduct a community meeting. The City is sensitive to the importance of this project and will not carry it forward until we are able to meet in person. We appreciate your patience and the participation and feedback we had received on the project. We look forward to jump starting the project once the Stay at Home order is lifted.

Independence Day Celebration UpdateCity of Galt officials were recently forced to make the disheartening decision to cancel the annual Independence Day Celebration, including the parade, fireworks show, Tonn Memorial Run, and associated festivities. This was an incredibly difficult decision for the city and not one made lightly. City officials realize this is a tradition in our community, one that signifies the local pride and small town charm of Galt. Unfortunately, the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 have forced the City to make decisions and take actions that would normally never be considered. This is an ever-changing environment and the current State and County Public Health Orders do not provide any indication that large scale public events will be allowed for several more months. With that, the city felt that there was no alternative but to cancel the traditional Independence Day festivities.

Although the Independence Day celebration was cancelled, the City is planning a family fun event to honor our local heroes with a special tribute to Officer Kevin Tonn. The Lights for Heroes event will be held on June 26, 27, and 28, from 8:30 pm to 10:00 pm each night. This is a drive-through light and photo display being held on the Galt Market grounds.

The City of Galt is considering three separate annexation applications for development projects within the City’s Sphere of Influence (SOI). All three projects are currently in the environmental review process and are expected to be presented for initial review by Planning Commission in July and August 2020.

The Summerfield project totals 58 acres and is located directly north of Marengo Road, with access from Twin Cities Road. Summerfield is planned as a private gated community encompassing 211 single family lots with a minimum lot size of 6,500 square feet. Other site amenities include a 2.2 acre private park, 3.3 acre detention basin and 4.8 acre wetland area.

The East Galt Infill/Notch Annexation totals 338+ acres and abuts the Galt city limits to the north, west and south. Elliott Homes submitted a development plan, called Simmerhorn Ranch, on the 119-acre parcel located south of Simmerhorn Road. The plan includes 429 housing units, an elementary school site, parkland, and detention basins. Development of this area will improve circulation between the City’s new growth in the northeast area and the City’s downtown and Old Town areas to the southwest. The additional housing development in the annex area is important for City commercial development and long range economic development plans. The Notch has been planned for City growth since the 1980’s and is included in the City’s 2009 General Plan.

The Fairway Oaks project is proposed within the existing City limits, but includes an annexation of the County Island as part of the project in order to ensure access to the development site and to provide for more efficient municipal services to those living in and near the County Island properties. The total Fairway Oaks project is 50.6 acres and will include 173 lots (ranging in size from 5,500 square feet to 14,255 square feet) for single family development, and the dedication of 12+ acres of open space along the Dry Creek riparian corridor. Access to the proposed subdivision comes from four different roadways: Glendale Avenue from the north, Cornell Road from the west, and Ranch Road and Chase drive from the south.
