Series History•This is the 47th meeting between the Saxons and the YellowJackets dating back to1887.TheUniversityofRochesteristhefirstcollegiateteamAUplayedthatisstill around today (AU played Geneseo in 1896 but Geneseo ended the football program in the early 1900’s).

The Saxons dominated the YellowJackets in 2017 to a 45-7 victory during Homecoming. Maleke Fuentes ‘18 rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns while Nas Smith rushed for 138 yards and a TD on the day. Aaron Griffin found paydirt twice on 60 yards rushing. Quarterback Bryce Morrison threw for 85 yards on 8-of-15 (53.3%) passing and one touchdown.

Defensively, the Saxons were led by A.J. LiCata ‘18 with 13 tackles while Raeaqwon Greer and Cole Reed tallied nine and eight tackles, respectively. Greer and Kyle Moore had a forced fumble each. Nick Milgate had one interception.

The Saxons opened the game with 28 unanswered points on three rushing touchdowns and a touchdown reception by Jayden Gavidia. The YellowJackets finallygotontheboardinthethirdquarterwhenMatt Gallagher found Daniel DiLoreto from six yards out.

Last Game for the Saxons•AU is coming off a disappointing 28-14 loss to St. John Fisher College in Empire 8 play. Had the Saxons won the game (with the Cortland loss) they wouldhavefinishedtheseasoninsecondplaceandearnedaberthtotheNew York State Bowl game. However, following the loss, Cortland clinched the berth for the second consecutive year.

The Saxons opened the game strong, forcing a fumble on the SJFC 17-yard line that was recovered by Nick Milgate. One play later, Nas Smith was scampering into the end zone to give AU the lead.

AU’s next drive was thwarted inside their own red zone before it could get started. An errant punt went out-of-bounds at the Saxons’ 15-yard line, givingSJFCfavorablefieldposition.Threeplayslater,theCardinalswerecelebratingtheirfirsttouchdownoftheday.

SJFC took the lead 14-7 in the second quarter when DeMarre Nelson returned a pick-six from 25 yards out. Only minutes later, the Cardinal defense earned another interception that the offense converted into points, taking the lead 21-7 to the halftime break.

Bob Rankl was appointed head coach of the Alfred University football team prior to the 2014 season after serving 15 years as an assistant for the Saxons. Rankl has led the Saxons to a 38-15recordinhisfiveseasonsas Head Coach, making him the fastest to reach the 25-win mark as head coach in AU history. Rankl,justthefifthheadcoachat AU since 1937, has a winning

percentage of .733, which ranks tops in school history among coaches who have served as head coach for at least 23 games. The 2016 Saxons went 10-0 in the regular season, claiming theEmpire8Conferencecrownandbecomingthefirstteam in Empire 8 history to go through a season unbeaten. The Saxons were the top seed in their region of the NCAA tournament, and hosted three games. AU defeated Bridgewater (MA) State and Western New England in the firsttworoundsbeforefallingtoMountUnioninanElite8shootout at Yunevich Stadium. The Saxons won a school-record 12 games and were named winners of the Lambert Cup as the top Division III team in theEast.Itmarkedthefirsttimesince1971thatanAlfredUniversity team earned the Lambert Cup.

During that 2016 season, Rankl led a group of Saxon coaches who were honored as Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year. Rankl was also named ECAC North Coach of the Year, D3football.com East Region Coach of the Year, and AFCA Division III Region 1 Coach of the Year. During Rankl’s tenure, the Saxons have also enjoyed tremendous success in the classroom. AU has had at least one football player recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-District in each of the past four years (Michael Berardi in 2014 and 2015; A.J. LiCata, Shyheim Wingate and Zach Brinkley in 2016; A.J LiCata 2017). Rankl was appointed head coach of the AU football team in May 2014 after 15 seasons as an assistant coach for the Saxons. He served as the defensive line coach from 1999-2000, before transitioning to coaching the offensive line and coordinating the Saxons’ running game from 2001-2013. Rankl was instrumental in helping the Saxons reach the post-season 10 consecutive years (2004-2013), including six ECAC Bowl Championships, two Empire 8 Championships and appearances in the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, reaching the national quarterfinalsin2010.Duringthattime,AUset19differentschool records on offense.

120 Years of AU Football•2018 marks the 120th year of AU football which began in 1895 (missed three years from 1942-1945 due to WWII). Every AU football player can trace their roots to George Hill and the “Alfred Eleven” that went 0-3 in 1895, playing Wellsville twice and Bradford once. Since its inception to the start of the 2018 season, AU football has won 531-of-948 games (.584).

One Win for History•If the Saxons win today’s game, the senior class will becoming the winning class in program history. Overall they have won 33 games as a unit (8 in 2015; 12 in 2016; 8 in 2017; 5 in 2018). One more will put them at 34 overall wins - setting a new four-year standard in wins.
