King RiceHEAD COACH • NORTH CAROLINA, 1992 • 1ST SEASON • 2-8 OVERALL / NEC RECORD: 0-2

King Rice, a former point guard under Hall of Fame Head Coach

Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina, was named the

head men’s basketball coach at Monmouth University on March 30,

2011. Rice is the fi fth head coach in the history of the Monmouth

men’s basketball program.

A native of Binghamton, N.Y. and a 1992 graduate of North Caro-

lina, Rice has 13 seasons of experience in the collegiate coaching

ranks, 10 of which came with current Vanderbilt Head Coach Kevin

Stallings. For the past fi ve seasons, Rice has been an assistant

coach at Vanderbilt, where the Commodores made the NCAA Tour-

nament four of those years out of the Southeastern Conference.

Rice, 42, served as an assistant to Stallings for fi ve seasons at Illi-

nois State from 1994-98, helping the Redbirds advance to postseason play four times, including

two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Rice helped spearhead recruiting efforts and was

noted for his solid relationships with players.

Prior to his stint in Normal, Ill., Rice began his coaching career as an assistant on Jerry Green’s

Oregon staff during the 1993 campaign. Following his fi ve seasons with Stallings at Illinois

State, Rice was an assistant for two years (1999-2000) at Providence under Tim Welsh.

As a point guard at North Carolina from 1988-91, Rice played for legendary coach Dean Smith,

helping the Tar Heels to a 29-6 overall mark and appearance at the 1991 NCAA Final Four. He

fi nished his career ranked third on the Tar Heels’ all-time assist list with 629, and that mark

ranks 11th all-time in Atlantic Coast Conference annals. Rice, who was a team captain in

1990-91 alongside Pete Chilcut and Rick Fox, earned UNC’s Carmichael-Cobb Award (team’s

outstanding defensive player) as a junior, and as a senior was tabbed the Foy Roberson Award

recipient as the team’s Most Inspirational Player.

Rice, who played in 140 career games for the Tar Heels and once had 13 assists in a single-

game versus Kentucky, earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from North Carolina

in 1992.

Rice also served as head coach of the Bahamian National team for three seasons from 2001-

2004.

Along with UNC teammate Fox, Rice formed CarolinaPros, Inc., in 1998. The service organiza-

tion currently sponsors a variety of community-based events and provides assistance through

mentoring programs, scholarships, skill development and donor education.

Rice also worked as a professional trainer to Fox for fi ve years. Fox played 13 seasons in the

NBA with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers from 1992-2004.

A 1987 McDonald’s High School All-American, Rice is married to Summer and the couple has

a 10 year old son, Alexander, and a newborn son Julian James Rice, born in early November.

HAWKS IN THE PRESEASON COACHES POLLMonmouth was selected tenth in the Northeast Conference 2011-12 preseason coaches poll, based on voting conducted by the league’s head coaches. Defend-ing champion Long Island was picked to repeat as NEC champion by the league coaches, as the announcement was made on November 2nd during a media tele-conference to promote the tipoff of the 2011-12 season, the 31st in the league’s history. The Blackbirds, who won the 2011 NEC Tournament crown with an 85-82 overtime victory over Robert Morris, claimed 10 of the possible 12 fi rst-place votes.

Robert Morris, which just missed a third straight NEC Championship, was tabbed second with the fi nal two fi rst-place votes, followed by Central Connecticut State in third. Wagner and Quinnipiac, last year’s preseason favorite, rounded out the top-fi ve.

Mount St. Mary’s, Bryant, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Monmouth occu-pied spots six through ten, while St. Francis (N.Y.) and Fairleigh Dickinson rounded out the preseason predictions ranked 11th and 12th, respectively.

Conducted annually, NEC coaches have failed to correctly forecast the eventual league champion since selecting Mount St. Mary’s to win it all in 1998-99, and have proven inaccurate in 22 of the last 24 years.

BASEMENT DWELLERIn the last fi ve seasons, Monmouth has been picked ninth or lower in the preseason poll. In 2007-08, Monmouth was picked 10th in the NEC Preseason Poll, which was the lowest in the NEC preseason coaches poll since 1999-2000 when it was voted 11th in a 12-team league. That year, Monmouth was coming off a 5-21 season (5-15 in the NEC), when the Hawks held the nation’s longest losing streak (19 games). The Hawks, after fi nishing 11th last season, were picked 10th once again this year.

DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPSMonmouth annually ranks among the NEC leaders in scoring defense. In fact, MU has led the NEC in the category in 14 of the last 23 years, including three years ago (67.1 ppg). The Hawks fi nished last season ranked second in that category (65.9) - only 0.4 ppg behind league-leading Robert Morris.

LEADING SCORERMonmouth’s top returning scorer is senior forward Mike Myers Keitt (10.1 ppg in 2010-11), who also has the second highest career-point total of all returning play-ers. The senior, who has 664 career points, has started 59 games in the Blue and White, and fi nished 2011 ranked 30th in the league in scoring.

IT ONLY TAKES ONE MORE POINT THAN YOULast season, Monmouth fi nished 5-13 in games decided by fi ve points or less. Eight of Monmouth’s fi rst nine games on the year were decided by fi ve points or less, and Monmouth fi nished the season 1-9 in those contests in NEC play.

MU vs. RANKED TEAMSMonmouth is now 0-18 all-time vs. Top 25 teams in the nation, after its 95-73 loss at No. 22/18 Vanderbilt (11/25/11). Monmouth has faced three ranked Villanova squads recently, as the No. 8 Villanova team bested the Hawks on 12/22/10 in the MAC and on 11/25/08 at the Pavilion. MU took on No. 3 Villano-va in the NCAA Tournament in 2006. In the 2004 NCAA Tournament First Round, the Hawks lost 85-52 to then No. 9 Mississippi State in Orlando. In 2001-02, Monmouth hosted No. 22 Gonzaga, marking the fi rst time that a team ranked in the top 25 had ever made an appearance at Boylan Gym. Monmouth lost the game, 79-54. That same season, Monmouth also lost to No. 2 Maryland, 91-55, at Cole Fieldhouse. At the 2001 NCAA East Regional, the Hawks dropped a 95-52 decision to No. 1 ranked Duke. During the 1999-2000 season, Monmouth lost to No. 25 Miami (Fla.), 67-46 and No. 20 DePaul, 69-62. In 1995-96, Monmouth lost to No. 20 Duke, 69-53, in the regular season and No. 20 Marquette, 68-44, in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawks have also lost to No. 25 St. John’s (85-60 - 11/23/90), No. 18 Iowa (55-46 - 12/30/89), No. 18 North Carolina State (95-50 - 12/27/88), No. 11 St. John’s (98-58 - 12/23/85), No. 17 Georgia Tech (96-66 - 1/17/85) and No. 6 Georgetown (75-54 - 1/9/84).

SIX PACK OF WINSThe Hawks strung together six consecutive winning seasons from 2000-01 through 2005-06, winning three NEC titles. It marked the fi rst time the Blue and White posted six straight winning marks since moving to D-I in 1983-84.

THE OTHER END OF THE SPECTRUMThe Hawks have currently strung together fi ve consecutive losing seasons for the fi rst time in their D-I history (since 1983-84).

IT’S CALLED CHARITY, CUZ THEY ARE “FREE” THROWSThe school season-record for free throw percentage is 77.1%, set during the 1990-91 and 2004-05 seasons. Monmouth fi nished last season connecting on 63.9% (376-588) from the line - a program-low. Prior to last year, the Hawks’ worst-ever showing was in 2001-02 when the team hit 64.9% from the line. Mon-mouth is hitting 62.2% (117-188) after connecting on 21-of-27 from the stripe at Robert Morris (12/3).

O-FER AGAINST THE BIG EASTMU is now 0-39 against teams from the BIG EAST Conference after its second straight loss to Villanova (11/11/11) and No. 8 Villanova (12/22/10). MU gave itself a chance to earn a victory in 2007-08, falling at Seton Hall in OT. MU took Rutgers to overtime in 2003-04, but lost by three. MU has hosted three Big East teams in the MAC in the last two years (Seton Hall, Rutgers, Villanova).

DEFENSIVE AT THE ARCMU, which allowed 35.5% from three-point range to its opponents last season, is surrendering treys at a 41.9% clip so far this year (90-of-215). Conversely, the Hawks are hitting just 27.1% of their own attempts.

CLOSE CALLS ON A NATIONAL SCALEMU led the nation in games decided by fi ve points or less with its

18 close contests (5-13) last season, but was succesful in its fi rst

encounter of this year in a two-point win over Navy (12/6).

TOURING THE GARDEN STATEThis season, the Hawks will face three of the seven Garden State

Division I Basketball programs - Fairleigh Dickinson, Rider and

Rutgers. Facing four of the school’s last season, MU went 2-3 on

the tour.

MONMOUTH ALL-TIME 1,000-POINT SCORERSWhile the Monmouth D-I basketball record books contain 18 members in its 1,000-point club, the all-time 1,000-point scorers include 13 more members that date back to the 50’s. Led by Ron Kornegay’s 2,526 points, MU now has 31 members in this club. Second to Kornegay (Athletic Director at Manasquan H.S., and the only retired number at MU - #22) is Ed Halicki (1969-72), who threw a no-hitter for the San Francisco Giants in his Major League Baseball career.

IT’S A LONG ROAD AHEADIn 2009-10, MU endured a seven-game road swing - the pro-gram’s longest since venturing away from home for eight straight games in 1993-94. The Hawks are slated to open this season with nine straight road contests, and will play 12 of their fi rst 14 games away from the MAC.

HOME WINSThe Hawks’ eight home wins during the 2009-10 season was the

most for the program since the 2006-07 season when MU posted

eight home wins. The school record for home victories is 13, set

during the 2003-04 campaign.

ALL-ROOKIE TRIOMonmouth currently has three players on its roster that have earned NEC All-Rookie Team honors, increasing the program-total to 16 players who have earned All-Newcomer/All-Rookie acco-

lades. Last season, Marcus Ware joined teammates senior Will

Campbell (2009) and junior Ed Waite (2010), on the list.

NEW FACESMonmouth welcomes several new faces to the program this year,

including seven players, and new staff. The Hawks’ newcomers

include Daniel James and Dion Nesmith, who each sat out last

year, and freshmen Khalil Brown, Mykel Harris, Andrew Nich-

olas and Austin Tillotston. The sideline also welcomes a new

staff, as assistant coaches Rick Callahan, Brian Reese and Derrick

Phelps and Director of Operations, Sam Ferry join King Rice in

West Long Branch.

CHRISTENING THE MACAfter 44 years of calling Boylan Gymnasium the home of Mon-

mouth University Basketball, the Hawks opened the 2009-10

campaign in the brand new, $57-million Multipurpose Activity

Center on November 13 and 15, when MU hosted FIU and Seton

Hall. FIU and SHU both made fi rst-time appearances on campus,

while the Pirates’ visit was the fi rst time MU hosted a BIG EAST

team.

ROAD STRUGGLESMonmouth fi nished last year 4-11 away from the MAC, and 2-11 in straight road games. The Hawks went 2-0 in the two neutral site contests at the Basketball Travelers Classic in early Decem-ber. MU’s victory at Bryant (1/22/11) was its fi rst road victory since a 51-49 win at St. Francis on 2/18/10.

In the last fi ve-plus seasons, MU is now 14-68 in road games after

opening this year with eight straight “road” defeats.

QUITE THE COMEBACKMU’s 17-point comeback in the victory over Hartford (12/11/10),

was the Hawks’ biggest comeback win since November 24, 2003,

when Monmouth erased a 19-point defi cit against Hampton in the

Paradise Jam. Monmouth trailed 35-16 with 1:58 remaining in the

half, in a 64-52 victory over the Pirates - which was a PJ record.

The Hawks matched the 17-point comeback in a victory against

Bryant (1/3), as MU trailed 27-10 with 3:46 left in the fi rst half.

Monmouth’s largest DI comeback was in the 2001 NEC Champion-

ship game against St. Francis (N.Y.), when the Hawks came back

from 20 points down with 14 minutes remaining.

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASUREMonmouth recorded four double-doubles last season, as center

Phill Wait posted a pair. Wait’s fi rst career double-double came

against Hartford (11 pts, 16 rebs), and was the Hawks’ fi rst dou-

ble-double since Ed Waite posted a 10-point, 17-rebound effort at

Fairleigh Dickinson (2/6/10) the season before.

Wait notched his second career double-double against CCSU

(1/20/11) when he posted a career-best 14 points and 14 re-

bounds for the Hawks, a game before Waite notched a 13-point,

12-board double-double in a win at Bryant. Former guard Jordan

Davis registered the fi nal d-d against Bryant in the MAC.

Ed Waite posted the Hawks’ fi rst double-double of this season

with his 12-point, 11-rebound effort off the bench at Virginia Tech

(11/14/11).

ALLOWING 80+In 2009-10, Monmouth allowed 80+ points to seven opponents, but only allowed it twice last year (both times to Sacred Heart). The most 80-point outings by the opposition came during the 1985-86 season, when 11 teams hung 80+ on the Hawks. The 1991-92 edition had no opponents accompish the feat.

Villanova posted 106 points on the Hawks to open the 2011-12 campaign, and Virginia Tech (91), Albany (85) and Vanderbilt (95) each passed the 80-point mark. The Hawks are surrendering 81.6 ppg after nine games.

CAROLINA ON MY MINDThree members of Monmouth’s coaching staff played for the Uni-versity of North Carolina under the legendary Dean Smith. In King Rice’s four years with the Tar Heels (1988-89 to 91-92), the squad went 102-37 with four NCAA Sweet 16 appearances and a Final Four showing. Assistant coaches and Tar Heel classmates Brian Reese and Derrick Phelps, went a combined 114-27 (1990-91 to 93-94), while winning the 1993 NCAA Championship.

And yes, that was Phelps trapping Michigan’s Chris Webber in the corner during the infamous timeout call in the 1993 National Championship Game.

MONMOUTH FIRST-YEAR HEAD COACHESKing Rice became the fi fth head coach at Monmouth upon his hiring in March. In their fi rst seasons at MU Bill Boylan (1956-57) went 8-4, Ron Kornegay (1977-78) went 8-17, Wayne Szoke (1987-88) went 16-13, and Dave Calloway (1998-99) went 5-21 overall.

KHALIL BROWN DEEMED INELIGIBLE BY NCAAMonmouth freshman forward Khalil Brown had his waiver de-nied by the NCAA and is considered ineligible to start the season due to the “delayed enrollment” legislation from August 2011. The legislation states that a student-athlete must be enrolled in a school within 12 months of their high school graduation.

In the fall of 2010, while at Westwind Academy, Brown and the school principal called the NCAA Eligibility Center and asked about his eligibility for the fall of 2011 and they were told he would be “fi ne.” After his recruitment by other Division I institutions start-ed, Brown was informed by the NCAA in May of his status.

Monmouth will continue to appeal the NCAA’s decision.

HAWKS RECEIVE FOUR NLI’sGuards Jalen Palm (Louisville, Ky./Butler Traditional H.S.) [5-

10, 165 - point guard] and Christian White (Rochester, N.Y./

Aquinas H.S.) [5-10, 175 - point guard], and forwards Tyrone

O’Garro (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter’s Prep) [6-5, 180 - forward]

and Collin Stewart (Scotia, N.Y./Schenectady Christian School)

[6-7, 180 - forward] have all signed National Letters of Intent to

play basketball at Monmouth University in 2012-13, head coach

King Rice announced.

CENTURY MARKIn the season-opening loss to Villanova (11/11/11), the Hawks

surrendered 100+ points for the fi rst time since a 101-78 loss to

Seton Hall on December 2, 2008.

The 106 points allowed was the highest total allowed since giving

up 108 points to Long Island (2/26/98) in the NEC Quarterfi nals.

The program-record for points allowed is 112, to the same LIU

team in 1998, in the regular season fi nale.

TOUGH STARTMonmouth has opened a season 0-8 for the fi rst time since the

beginning of the 1998-99 campaign when the Hawks started

0-19, and had the nation’s longest losing streak at the time.

HOLDING ONIn its fi rst eight contests of the season, Monmouth led for a to-

tal of 8:05 of game action. The Hawks held leads on seven oc-

cassions in that stretch, including twice against Albany. MU led

against Villanova, Albany, Brown and Vanderbilt.

Monmouth increased that time total in the win at Navy (12/6),

adding 17:59 of game action, including a stretch of 9:40 in the

fi rst half. In the win, the Hawks held a fi ve-point lead, their larg-

est cushion of the season, before holding on for the 69-67 victory

in Alumni Hall.

The Hawks led wire-to-wire against Fordham (12/10), leading by

as many as 23 points in the second half.

NEC OPENERSMonmouth is now 16-11 all-time in Northeast Conference open-

ers, dating back to the Hawks’ fi rst season in the league (1985-

86), after its season-opening loss at Saint Francis on Thursday

night. After winning fi ve straight NEC openers, the Hawks have

now dropped six straight. Over that span, the Hawks are 6-6

when they open on the road.

PENNSYLVANIA IS NOT A GOOD HOSTMonmouth has not been victorious in both games of the Pa. swing since the 2002-03 campaign.

ENDING A STREAKMonmouth’s road win at Navy (12/6) broke a ten-game road los-ing streak for the Hawks.

WARE’S DEBUTJunior forward Marcus Ware made his season debut on Tuesday at Navy, after recovering from ACL surgery in the spring. The 2011 NEC All-Rookie Team selection played 12 minutes, adding two rebounds, an assist and a pivotal three-point play with 6:03 remaining in the game.

DISHING IT OUTMonmouth freshman Andrew Nicholas set a career-high, and a team season-best with his six assists at Navy (12/6). Nicholas, who has made seven starts, ranks fi fth on the team in scoring and second in assists after 10 games.

MILEAGE CHART AWAY FROM HOMEBefore having a home game this season, the Hawks opened with nine straight road games, and have traveled a total of 4,652 miles before hosting a game in the MAC.

YOU THOUGHT 9 WAS A MISTAKE??Monmouth head coach King Rice stated, “I’m sorry fans that I was the crazy young coach that scheduled nine straight road games to start the season. We will never do that again.”

But that’s not the longest road streak to open the season in the country this year. Monmouth is tied for the second-longest (9, with fellow NEC member St. Francis [N.Y.]), but the longest road swing to open the year title belongs to both Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mis-sissippi Valley State, which each open with 15 road games. Both of those programs do not have a home game until January 14.

DIVISION I HOME OPENERSSince turning Division I in men’s basketball, the Hawks’ program is now 17-12 all-time in home openers after its 80-65 win over Fordham. Monmouth is 2-1 in home openers in the MAC after de-feating FIU in 2009, but falling to Stony Brook in 2010.

SPREADING THE WEALTHMonmouth had fi ve players score in double-fi gures against Ford-

ham (12/10) for the fi rst time since fi ve Hawks did so in an over-

time win at Bryant on January 22, 2011.

20 ASSISTSMonmouth’s 20 assists in the victory over Fordham (on 31 fi eld

goals) was the program’s fi rst 20+ assist game in nearly two

years. The Hawks dished out 21 assists in an 80-75 victory over

Penn on Dec. 12, 2009.

UP NEXT...Monmouth returns to action after a 10-day layoff on Thursday,

December 22 when the Hawks host in-state rival Rider at 7:00

p.m. in the MAC.
