THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs bolstered their postseason aspirations after registering a huge 31-27 home victory vs. Denver (12/4). Kansas City has constructed a three-game winning streak to improve its record to 8-4 and now embarks on a critical two-game NFC East road trip beginning with a contest at Dallas on Sunday. The Cowboys are in the thick of the NFC playoff chase, but are now 7-5 after a 17-10 loss at the N.Y. Giants (12/4). The road doesn’t get any easier for the Chiefs next week, who will travel to face the Giants in a Saturday contest (12/17). It’s been 30 years since the Chiefs registered their one-and-only regular season victory at Texas Stadium – a 34-31 Monday Night Football win (11/10/75) – but this week’s game is clearly the most significant contest in the history of the KC-Dallas series. KC won the last meeting at Arrowhead in ’98, while the Cowboys prevailed on Thanksgiving Day at Texas Stadium in ’95. Since that ’95 game, Dallas has defeated every AFC team except the Chiefs, Colts and Texans. The only active pair of NFL head coaches who have taken two different squads to the Super Bowl will square off this week. In total, Dick Vermeil and Bill Parcells have combined to guide seven different teams to the playoffs. Remarkably, Vermeil and Parcells have met only once in the regular season as NFL head coaches, with Vermeil’s Rams getting a 30-10 win vs. Parcells’ N.Y. Jets (10/11/98). Although Vermeil hasn’t won in Dallas since ’82, his biggest victory against Dallas came with Philadelphia in the ’80 NFC Championship Game. Kansas City is seeking its first four-game winning streak since December of 2004. KC’s defense has allowed just 16.8 offensive ppg. over the last four games. Offensively, the Chiefs have been pounding the ball with bruising RB Larry Johnson. Last week, KC racked up 168 rushing yards against a Denver defense that entered the game as the league’s top rushing defense. Johnson has registered five consecutive 100-yard games and can establish the longest such streak in Chiefs history should he top the century mark against the Cowboys. THE SERIES The Chiefs are 3-4 all-time in regular season play vs. Dallas. KC hasn’t faced Dallas in the regular season since getting a 20-17 win at Arrowhead (12/13/98). That nearly seven-year span without facing the Cowboys is the club’s longest current stretch against any opponent. KC’s last visit to Dallas resulted in a 24-12 loss on Thanksgiving (11/23/95). KC’s lone regular season win at Dallas was a 34-31 triumph on MNF (11/10/75) under head coach Paul Wiggin. Kansas City is 4-5 in preseason action against Dallas, suffering a 24-20 loss at Dallas (9/2/04) in the most recent meeting between the two squads. KC’s last preseason win vs. the Cowboys was a 32-6 victory in an American Bowl outing in Monterrey, Mexico (8/5/96). The first six preseason meetings between the two franchises all took place between ’70-75. KC won the first meeting of any kind between these two franchises, getting a 13-0 preseason win at Dallas (9/5/70). THE BATTLE FOR BIG “D” – TEXANS VS. COWBOYS After lobbying unsuccessfully in the late ’50s for an NFL expansion franchise for Dallas, Lamar Hunt was prompted to form the rival American Football League. Dallas then became center stage in the AFL-NFL rivalry as both the Texans and the Cowboys called the Cotton Bowl home during their three-year co-existence from ’60-62. The Texans boasted a 15-6 regular season record at the Cotton Bowl and claimed the ’62 AFL Championship, while the Cowboys managed just a 4-12-2 regular season home mark over the same span. But by ’63, it was clear that Dallas could not support two pro football teams and despite the superior record of his club, Hunt opted to move his franchise to Kansas City. In ’66, a series of clandestine meetings between Hunt and Cowboys President Tex Schramm began, ironically, at Love Field in Dallas. Those secret talks eventually set the stage for the AFL-NFL merger as Hunt and rest of the AFL’s “Foolish Club” were officially ushered into the NFL fold for the ’70 season. THE MATCH-UP

The Chiefs bolstered their postseason aspirations after registering a huge 31-27 home victory vs. Denver (12/4). Kansas City has constructed a three-game winning streak to improve its record to 8-4 and now embarks on a critical two-game NFC East road trip beginning with a contest at Dallas on Sunday. THE SERIES The Chiefs are 3-4 all-time in regular season play vs. Dallas. KC

hasn’t faced Dallas in the regular season since getting a 20-17 win at Arrowhead (12/13/98). That nearly seven-year span without facing the Cowboys is the club’s longest current stretch against any opponent. KC’s last visit to Dallas resulted in a 24-12 loss on Thanksgiving (11/23/95). KANSAS CITY AWARDED A FUTURE SUPER BOWL On November 16th, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced

that NFL owners had passed a proposal to bring the NFL’s championship game to Kansas City in a year between 2012 and 2021. The actual date will be at the discretion of the NFL. The announcement was made at the fall session of the league’s annual meeting in Kansas City.

The awarding of the Super Bowl was contingent on two key elements according to Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt. Arrowhead Stadium, which opened in ’72 is one of the oldest stadiums in the NFL. Arrowhead must be renovated, including a climate-controlling “Rolling Roof” structure. The awarding of a Super Bowl would also require the city and the team to meet all the bid specifications laid out by the league.

A renovated Arrowhead will feature the largest seating capacity of any modern Super Bowl site and “the state-of-the-art Rolling Roof is unprecedented by the league and the roof structure will be an icon for Kansas City and the entire National Football League,” Hunt said.

“I think it’s a tribute to Lamar Hunt and a tribute, as the Commissioner said, to all of the owners who have visited Arrowhead over the last 30 years and specifically over the last 15, and the support this community has given the Kansas City Chiefs,” added Chiefs President Carl Peterson.

RB LARRY JOHNSON’S RUSHING RAMPAGE Since taking over Kansas City’s starting duties for an injured RB

Priest Holmes vs. Oakland (11/6), Chiefs RB Larry Johnson has been on a rushing rampage. Johnson has racked up five 100-yard rushing games in five starts, tying RB Priest Holmes (five in 2002) for the longest streak in franchise history. In those five games, Johnson has produced 146 carries for 709 yards (141.8 ypg) and seven TDs. KC is 4-1 over that five-game span. Here’s a look at Johnson’s game-by-game stats and the league’s most productive rushers since November 1st, led by Johnson. Prior to joining the Cowboys, he posted a 29-19 (.604) record as head coach of the N.Y. Jets from ’97-99.

Parcells compiled a 32-32 (.500) mark in four seasons with New England from ’93-96, guiding that club to a berth in Super Bowl XXXI. He served as head coach of the Giants from ’83-90, accumulating a 77-49-1 (.610) regular season mark. He served as an assistant with the Giants (’79, ’81-82) and Patriots (’80) after a stint as head coach at Air Force in ’78. Dick Vermeil was named the ninth head coach in Chiefs

history on January 12, 2001 following head coaching stints with Philadelphia (’76-82) and St. Louis (‘97-99). He is one of just four coaches in NFL history to lead two different teams to the Super Bowl and has twice been named NFL Coach of the Year.

The Calistoga, California native began his NFL coaching career with the L.A. Rams (’69, ‘71-73) serving as the team’s special teams, RBs, and QBs coach and offensive coordinator. During his tenure as head coach in Philadelphia (’76-82), he compiled a 54-47 record. In ’78, Vermeil guided the Eagles to their first playoff appearance in 12 years. He then led the ’80 Eagles to a 12-4 record to earn a trip to Super Bowl XV.

Vermeil returned to the sidelines as the head coach of St. Louis for three seasons (’97-99), guiding the Rams to a 13-3 record in ’99, concluding the year with a win in Super Bowl XXXIV. A standout quarterback at San Jose State, Vermeil served as an assistant at Stanford (’65-68) and UCLA (’70) before taking over the head coaching duties for the Bruins from ’74-75. In ’75, he led UCLA to a 23-10 victory over #1 ranked Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

Kansas City’s Defense Seeks to Hold Another Opponent to 21 Points or Less by Pete Moris

The Chiefs Are Traditionally Tough vs. NFC Opponents KC owns a 27-16 (.628) record against NFC opponents dating back to

’95, the league’s third-best mark over that span. The Chiefs have produced a 13-5 (.722) record during the month of December under Dick Vermeil. The Cowboys are 14-8 at home under Bill Parcells, including wins in four of their last five contests at Texas Stadium. However, Dallas is just 2-3 at home and 4-7 overall against AFC opponents under Parcells. The Chiefs are 2-3 all-time in regular season contests against Parcells-coached teams (1-2 vs. NYG, 1-0 vs. NE and 0-1 vs. NYJ). BEST AFC VS. NFC BEST DECEMBER REG. QB Trent Green Typically Heats Up in December QB Trent Green owns a 13-5 record as KC’s starter in games played

in December, including a streak of six straight December wins dating back to 2003. Over that 18-game span, Green has completed 63.9 percent (353 of 552) of his passes for 4,678 yards, good for an average of 259.9 yards per game. Green has also thrown 32 TDs and just 16 INTs in those December games, numbers that translate into a 97.9 rating.

Clearly, Green has been at his best during the season’s home stretch. Since joining the Chiefs in 2001, Green owns 24 games with a 100.0 rating or better. Nine of those 100.0-rating games have come during the month of December, more than any other month with KC posting an 8-1 record in those games. In fact, Green’s 97.9 rating and (32) TDs are his best totals during any month of the season.

Dallas owns just a 2-9 record under Bill Parcells when allowing a QB with a 100.0+ rating, but hasn’t permitted a passer to achieve that passing plateau this season. The Cowboys have gone 16 consecutive games without allowing an opposing passer to compile a 300-yard game after giving up 414 yards to Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck (12/12/04).

KC’s Pass Defense Continues to Improve, Bledsoe vs. the Chiefs KC’s defense has not allowed a 300-yard passer in five straight

games, allowing an average of just 196.0 net passing ypg over that span. The Chiefs have picked off opposing passers seven times over the last three weeks after racking up five INTs in the season’s first nine weeks.

Cowboys QB Drew Bledsoe owns a 2-4 career record as a starter vs. Kansas City. Bledsoe posted an 0-4 mark at Arrowhead with the Patriots and Bills. His two victories came at Foxboro Stadium with New England in ’98 and 2000. In those six career contests vs. KC, Bledsoe has completed 145 of 236 passes (61.4%) for 1,457 yards with 10 TDs and seven INTs, numbers that translate into an 80.8 rating. Bledsoe has been sacked 14.0 times by KC over that six-game span.

KC’s is the NFL’s Best Squad at Preventing 100-Yard Rushers The Chiefs haven’t permitted an individual 100-yard rusher in 19

contests, the longest active streak in the NFL. KC’s rush defense currently ranks fifth in the NFL, allowing just 91.8 ypg. Over the last nine games, KC’s defense has been even better, giving up just 83.4 ypg, a figure that would rank second in the NFL in rushing defense over the entire year. In fact, over that nine-game span, only one team (Denver, 131 yards at KC - 12/4) has registered more than 125 team rushing yards against the Chiefs.

Dallas owns a 6-1 mark under Bill Parcells when producing a 100-yard rusher. However, only one Cowboys back has topped the century mark this season when RB Marion Barber had 127 yards vs. Arizona (10/30). KC has allowed runs of four or more yards on just 36.2% of opponents’ first-down rushing attempts, the fourth-best mark in the league. Meanwhile, Dallas’ offense has broken runs of four or more yards on just 33.0% of its first-down rushing attempts, the 31st-lowest tally in the NFL. The Cowboys had a string of seven straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher snapped at NYG (12/4) when RB Tiki Barber had 115 yards. Active Streaks, Most Cons. Chiefs-Cowboys Scoring Stats – 21 is the Magic Number Kansas City has won 20 of its last 21 games when holding its foes to

21 points or less, including a 7-1 mark in 2005. KC has held eight opponents to 21 points or less already this season, the club’s best mark since holding nine opponents under that scoring barrier during KC’s last playoff campaign in 2003. The Chiefs held just two opponents to 21 points or less in 2004. The Chiefs have permitted just 16.8 offensive ppg over their past four games. When you exclude opponents’ return scores, KC’s defense has allowed an average of just 20.3 actual offensive ppg in 2005.

The Cowboys are 23-21 (.523) since Bill Parcells joined the club in 2003. Interestingly, Dallas has been held to 21 points or less in 20 of those 21 losses. In other words, the Cowboys are tough to beat when they score more than 21 points, owning a 12-1 (.923) mark dating back to 2003 when scoring 21 points or more, including a 4-0 record this season. Dallas’ only loss under Parcells when topping the 21-point barrier was a 28-24 setback at the N.Y. Giants (1/2/05). Dallas is 7-0 under Parcells when scoring 30 points or more and is 3-6 when allowing 30+ points. Chiefs 12-Game Report – 2005 vs. 2004

Here’s a look at some key areas where the Chiefs defense has improved compared to the 12-game mark a year ago . . .

RB Larry Johnson Headlines KC’s Productive Rushing Game When RB Larry Johnson runs well, the Chiefs typically roll. KC is 14-4

(.778) when producing a 100-yard rusher dating back to 2003, including an 8-1 (.889) mark when Johnson rushes for 100+ yards. Johnson has averaged 109.3 ypg in KC’s eight wins in 2005. Johnson’s five-game streak of 100-yard games is tied with RB Priest Holmes as the longest streak in KC history. Dallas is 0-7 under Parcells when allowing a 100-yard rusher. Since Johnson entered the Chiefs starting lineup vs. Oakland (11/6) in place of an injured Holmes, no NFL runner owns more rushing yards over that span than Johnson (709), whose 1,108 total rushing yards in 2005 are already the sixth-highest seasonal tally in KC annals.

If the Chiefs can score a rushing TD against the Cowboys it would likely bode well for their victory chances. KC has at least one rushing score in 23 consecutive victories dating back to a 40-34 OT win at Green Bay (10/12/03), the longest active streak of its kind in the NFL. KC is especially tough to beat when it scores two or more rushing TDs, owning a 22-4 (.846) record in such games dating back to 2003. KC is 7-0 all-time when Johnson has two rushing TDs. Dating back to 2003, no NFL team owns more rushing TDs than KC (80). Over that same timeframe, only four clubs have allowed fewer rushing scores than Dallas (28). Dallas has allowed just seven rushing TDs in 2005, while KC has allowed only eight. MOST RUSHING TDS SCORED FEWEST RUSHING TDS ALLOWED 2003-PRESENT 2003-PRESENT 1. Kansas City 80 1. Tampa Bay 22 2. KC, Dallas Tough to Beat When They Win the Turnover Battle KC is 18-2 (.900) when producing a positive turnover differential dating

back to 2003, including a 9-2 (.818) mark on the road. KC has been even or plus in eight of its 12 games in 2005. KC’s foes have fumbled an NFL-high 30 times in 2005. KC has recovered 13 of those fumbles, five more than all of 2004. Dallas is 19-5 (.792) with an even or positive turnover differential under Bill Parcells, including a 10-2 (.833) mark at Texas Stadium. Conversely, the Cowboys are 4-16 (.200) overall with a negative turnover mark dating back to 2003, including a 2-8 (.200) record at home. Dallas is +12 in its 23 wins under Parcells and -30 in its 21 losses.

Close Calls For the Cowboys and Other Statistical Tidbits Dallas’ five losses in 2005 have come by a combined 20 points (4.0

ppg). The Cowboys have been involved in nine games decided by seven points or less this season, posting a 4-5 record in those contests … Chiefs LB Gary Stills has 143 career special teams tackles, needing five more to surpass LB Greg Manusky (147) for the most in team history … Only Dallas (33:05) ranks better in time of possession than KC (32:27) in 2005 … The Cowboys (70) are tied as the NFL’s least-penalized team.

After a franticly-paced first half full of big plays, it was the Chiefs rugged second-half play that led to a dramatic 31-27 win over the AFC West-leading Broncos. The victory pushed the Chiefs all-time home record against Denver in the month of December to 17-1 and extended KC’s home winning streak in December to a remarkable 17 straight games. RB Larry Johnson pounded the NFL’s top-ranked run defense for 140 yards as well as the game-winning touchdown, while the KC defense slammed the door on fourth-and-one in the game’s final minutes. On the Broncos first possession, QB Jake Plummer lobbed a screen pass to RB Mike Anderson, who turned upfield for a 66-yard touchdown catch and a 7-0 lead. The Chiefs answered when WR Dante Hall slipped behind Denver CB Champ Bailey and caught a 44-yard TD pass from QB Trent Green to tie the game. KC would take the lead on a one-yard run by Johnson, but Denver answered with a one-yard TD run of its own to tie the game at 14-14. The back-and-forth scoring spree went back to the Chiefs favor on a 25-yard pass from Green to TE Tony Gonzalez midway through the second quarter. Denver tied it up at 21-21 just before halftime on a seven-yard QB draw from QB Bradlee Van Pelt. That set the stage for Johnson’s 90 fourth-quarter rushing yards and two Chiefs defensive stands. After an explosive first half that featured 538 yards of total offense, Kansas City returned to old-fashioned football and changed the pace of the game to more of a defensive slugfest in the second half. A minute-and-a-half into the third quarter K Jason Elam’s 40-yard field goal gave Denver its first lead since the early moments at 27-24. Like they had done all afternoon, the Chiefs – more specifically Johnson and offensive line – had an answer. Johnson pounded out 44 rushing yards as the Red and Gold marched 70 yards in six plays to regain the lead at 31-27 lead with 9:58 left in the game. The defense would be called upon twice more to protect the Chiefs narrow lead. First, they forced a three-and-out, then had to toe the line once more. On fourth-and-one from the Denver 47-yard line, the Broncos elected to go for it with 2:11 remaining in the contest. Anderson took the handoff over the right side and was stoned by DE Jared Allen and a host of red jerseys. The initial placement of the ball awarded Denver a first down, but the spot was overturned by a Chiefs challenge and the ball was ruled short of the first down, giving Kansas City the football. After the Chiefs ran the clock down with six straight runs, the Broncos had 0:03 left to try for a miracle. Plummer’s desperation heave was knocked down by S Greg Wesley well short of the end zone and the Chiefs 31-27 win was sealed.

GAME NOTES• Kansas City improved its December home record to 19-1 dating back to ’95, the best mark in the NFL over that span.• RB Larry Johnson registered his fifth consecutive 100-yard rushing game, tying RB Priest Holmes (11/17/02 - 12/15/02) for the longest streak in Chiefs history.• On a four-yard run in the first quarter, Johnson became the eighth player in Chiefs history to register a 1,000-yard rushing season.

Kansas City controlled the clock and the ground game en route to a 20-17 victory over the Cowboys, who would go on to win the NFC East with a 10-6 record. The Chiefs held the ball for 37:20 compared to 22:40 in the time of possession column for Dallas. Kansas City racked up 38 carries for 183 yards, while Dallas managed just 16 carries for 51 yards on the ground. RB Bam Morris was the Chiefs primary workhorse, piling up 27 carries for 137 yards with one TD. After both clubs traded punts to open the contest, QB Rich Gannon guided the Chiefs deep into Dallas territory, thanks in large part to Morris, who ripped off a 25-yard run on the drive. However, a Gannon pass on third-and-five from the seven-yard line fell incomplete, forcing Kansas City to settle for a 24-yard K Pete Stoyanovich FG. The Chiefs would cross midfield on their next possession, but could not convert on fourth-and-five from the Dallas 34, leaving the score at 3-0 entering the second quarter. A 35-yard punt return by RB Tyrone Hughes gave the Cowboys first-and-10 at the Chiefs 32-yard line midway through the second quarter, setting up a 32-yard K Richie Cunningham FG that tied the score at 3-3. The Chiefs blocked a Dallas punt in Cowboys territory with under a minute left in the first half, but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Kansas City put the Chiefs out of field goal range, leaving the score deadlocked at the intermission. Kansas City used a 14-point third quarter to take control of the contest. After the Chiefs defense forced Dallas three-and-out, Gannon led an 11-play, 50-yard drive that culminated when Morris plowed into the end zone from one yard out to give KC a 10-3 advantage. CB James Hasty picked off QB Troy Aikman on the Cowboys next possession, setting the Chiefs up at the Dallas 35-yard line. Six plays later, a nimble nine-yard TD jaunt from Gannon put the Chiefs ahead 17-3. Dallas finally struck paydirt in the fourth quarter when Aikman hit WR Patrick Jeffers for a 28-yard TD pass on fourth-and-10, cutting the KC lead to just seven points. KC responded with an eight-play, 43-yard drive that featured a 43-yard Stoyanovich FG that upped the Chiefs edge to two scores. Aikman then guided the Cowboys on a 12-play, 72-yard march that concluded with an eight-yard scoring toss to RB Emmitt Smith with a little over two minutes remaining as the Chiefs clung to a three-point lead. The Cowboys opted to kick off instead of attempting for an onside kick attempt and never saw the ball again. Runs of 11 and 17 yards from Morris gave KC a pair of first downs, allowing the Chiefs to run out the clock on a 20-17 victory, marking Kansas Cityʼs first win against the Cowboys since ʼ89.
