McEwen Shoulders Scoring, Leads MU To Win Entering the start of the second half at Xavier, junior guard Koby McEwen hadn’tscored after missing his first four field goal attempts. He more than made up for the lackof production, however, putting the team on his back late in regulation and overtime. The Toronto, Ontario, native didn’t hit his first field goal until the final minutes of thesecond half, but thanks to his ability to get to the line, he put together a personal eight-to-nothing run to give MU a 61-58 lead with nine seconds left. McEwen continued to carry the offensive load in the first extra session, netting all ofMarquette’s seven points during that time and sealed his scoring with a late free throwin the final moments of the game. He finished the game with 18 points and five reboundsand was 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. In the last three games, McEwen is contributing 13.7 points and 8.3 rebounds pergame, including his first career double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds at Butler).

Howard Joins Elite NCAA Company Senior guard Markus Howard became the 72nd player in NCAA history to reach the2,500 point mark for a career with his eighth point in the win at Xavier on Wednesday. The Chandler, Arizona, native is currently in possession of 2,510 points to rank 68thall-time and he is rapidly approaching his brother Jordan’s total of 2,524 points (CentralArkansas, 2015-18). The all-time leading scorer in NCAA history is LSU’s Pete Maravich, who netted anamazing 3,667 points in just three years and without the 3-point line.

Cain Quietly Making Important Impact Junior forward Jamal Cain has been a valuable member of the bench corps all seasonlong and that role has increased with the injury to Greg Elliott on Jan. 7. The Pontiac, Michigan, native grabbed nine rebounds in the win at Xavier and hit twoclutch free throws in overtime to help secure the 84-82 victory. In the last three games,Cain is contributing 6.0 rebounds per game and has made 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) of hisfield goals.

The 2019-20 cam-paign will mark thesixth at MarquetteUniversity for headcoach SteveWojciechowski, who

has enjoyed a wealth of success in collegiatebasketball as both a player and a coach. Wojciechowski (pronounced woe-ju-HOW-skee) was introduced as the program’s 17thhead coach on April 1, 2014 by MarquetteUniversity President Dr. Michael R. Lovell. From the moment he arrived on campus,Wojciechowski established his “Win EveryDay” philosophy as the foundation for theMarquette program. That approach has beenextremely successful on the recruiting trail, where the MU staff assembled back-to-backnationally ranked recruiting classes in 2015and 2016. MU made its third-consecutive postseasonappearance in 2018-19, earning a No. 5 seed inthe NCAA tournament following a 24-win cam-paign and second-place finish in the BIG EASTConference. The Golden Eagles were rankedamong the top-10 programs in the countryduring the season and concluded the year asone of the most improved defensive rosters inthe nation. MU also finished ninth nationally inattendance in the team’s first year at FiservForum, marking the best finish in program his-tory. The Golden Eagles competed in the post-season for the second-straight year in 2017-18,advancing to the quarterfinals of the NationalInvitation Tournament (NIT). MU finished witha 21-win season and the roster featured all-conference performers Markus Howard andAndrew Rowsey. Marquette’s offensive attackwas one of the top performers in the countryand among the numerous records to fall wasthe program’s all-time 3-point field goals mademark. Marquette returned to the NCAA tourna-ment in 2016-17, thanks in large part to one ofthe most productive offensive attacks in thecountry. The roster featured a pair of all-con-ference honorees (Howard and Rowsey) andthe campaign was highlighted by the pro-gram’s first-ever regular season win over thetop-ranked team (Villanova). The Golden Eagles collected a 20-win cam-paign in 2015-16 under Wojciechowski andadvanced to the quarterfinals of the BIG EASTConference Tournament. The team’s on-courtsuccess was led by Henry Ellenson, the league’sfreshman of the year and first-round NBA Draftselection by the Detroit Pistons. Ellenson wasthe program’s first McDonald’s All-Americahonoree in over 30 years and a top-10 ratedprospect.

The Golden Eagles claimed their first winunder Wojciechowski in the season opener in2014-15. The 79-63 win over UT Martin at theBMO Harris Bradley Center was his first as ahead coach at the NCAA Division I level. Theseason also produced wins over Georgia Tech,Tennessee and Arizona State. Wojciechowski, 42, had previously servedas an assistant coach at Duke since the 1999-2000 season and was promoted to associatehead coach in the summer of 2008. As a playerand coach, he was a part of Duke's winning tra-dition, serving on the coaching staff for twoNCAA tournament champions. During histenure, the Blue Devils posted an incredible441-92 record and competed in the NCAA tour-nament every year. Wojciechowski also served as court coachand scout for the USA Basketball Men'sNational Team. He helped lead on-court dutiesas well as game preparation from 2006-12,including the program's gold-medal perform-ance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012London Olympics. The Olympic teams includedNBA greats such as Marquette alumnusDwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.

Earning national titles In 2001, in his second year as an assistantat Duke, Wojciechowski and the Blue Devilswon the national championship. The team alsocaptured the Atlantic Coast Conference regularseason and tournament crowns and posted a35-4 record. Wojciechowski saw one of his formerteammates and pupils, Shane Battier, earn theconsensus National Player of the Year award in2001 as well as National Defensive Player ofthe Year for the third consecutive season. Wojciechowski achieved repeated successat the highest level with an NCAA title in the2009-10 season as associate head coach. Onthe road to the championship, theBlue Devils also won the ACCTournament, the ACC RegularSeason and NIT Season Tip-Offtitles. Defense and reboundingwere key for the Blue Devils whohad one of the nation's topdefenses, holding opponents to61.0 points per game, and ranked14th out of 334 teams in rebound-ing margin. As a player, Wojciechowski(who was often referred to as"Wojo,") was named the topdefensive player in the country hissenior year, a two-time All-ACCchoice and honorable mentionAssociated Press All-America.
