THIS WEEK: The Dons open the second half of West Coast Conference action while embarking on a three-game road trip this weekend. USF will kick off the trio of games in Santa Clara. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.

LAST OUTING: As the final second ticked off the clock, starter Ashley Boggs held the ball as she was mobbed by her teammates, celebrating their first win of the West Coast Conference season, 66-46 over Pepperdine. The Dons shot well from the field, knocking down 22-of-50 shots (44.0%) and were led by junior guard Vania Singleterry with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and also grabbed 8 rebounds.

LOOKING AHEAD: San Francisco will remain on the road next week, traveling to San Diego and Saint Mary’s. The Dons and Toreros will face off Thursday, February 10 at 7 p.m., before heading to Moraga for a 2 p.m. tip Saturday, February 12.

ALE GOES 10-FOR-10: Last weekend, against Pepperdine, Rheina Ale went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. The perfect showing from the stripe marked the 15th time in program history a Don has shot 1.000 from the stripe, with a minimum of eight attempts. Ale became the fourth member of USF history to be a perfect 10-for-10. The last time a Don went 10-for-10, or better, at the line was in 2003 when Carey Sauer went 10-for-10 against San Diego on March 7.

IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME: USF women’s basketball currently ranks second in the league in attendance for both overall and conference games. The Dons’ have welcomed over 7,000 fans to War Memorial Gym this season, averagin 676 per game. Overall, USF averages 1,421 fans at games - home, away or neutral sites. For league play, San Francisco averages 1,092 fans per contest.

KUSF PROGRAMMING NOTE: KUSF, the official radio home of USF women’s basketball since the 1996-97 season is no longer transmitting on the FM dial at 90.3 and will be shifting to an online-only format, effective as of Tuesday, January 18, 2011. While USF women’s basketball loses its presence over the airwaves, all contests throughout the remainder of the 2010-11 season and beyond will be available online on the official website of USF Athletics, www.usfdons.com, courtesy of Yahoo Broadcast. USF Athletics and Dons Basketball greatly appreciates the longtime support by KUSF.

THREE’S COMPANY, ALMOST: The Dons put on a show from deep against Mount St. Mary’s on New Years Eve, draining a dozen 3-point baskets – eight of which came in the first half. The 12 baskets from beyond the arc fell one short of the single-game program record. The record of 13 baskets was set on Dec. 7, 2008 against Cal Poly. USF has hit 12 baskets on two previous occasions, Mar. 1, 2008 against Pepperdine and Dec. 1 against Massachusetts. Against The Mount, Kelly Jo Mullaney paced USF with five three’s and Katy Keating with four – all of which came in the first half.

DISHIN’ OUT THE GOODS: Against the Academy of Art on Dec. 29, USF dished out 26 assists. The 26 assists marks the highest single-game total for the Dons since the 2001-02 season. On Nov. 11, 2001, San Francisco posted 28 assists as USF defeated visiting Cal State Northridge 95-69 at War Memorial Gym. The school record for assists in a game is 34, set against UC Riverside, Nov. 19, 2000. Against the Knights this season, Rheina Ale and Brittany Brumfield led the charge for the Dons with five assists each.

DENIED!: Dec. 29, against the Knights, USF recorded nine blocks. The nine blocks marks the highest single-game total for San Francisco since the Dons recorded 10 in a 72-52 win at Gonzaga, Jan. 11, 2001. Against Academy of Art, two blocks paced USF from both Donnisha Taylor and Katy Keating. Rheina Ale, Kelly Jo Mullaney, Vania Singleterry, Bailey Barbour and Whitney Daniels each added one. So far this season, Barbour, who has posted 22 blocks, paces USF’s block brigade. Last season, no member of the USF roster recorded more than 11 blocks, while in 2008-09, Katy Keating posted 14. Barbour is the first Don to post more than 20 blocks in a season since Lisa Olden posted 28 during the 2007-08 season.

PACK THE HOUSE VS. THE CARDINAL: Wednesday, Dec. 22, USF hosted No. 8/8 Stanford in the annual “Pack The House Challenge”. That night, WMG hosted 3,441 fans as the Dons fell to the Cardinal, handing head coach Tara VanDerveer her 800th win. The crowd marks a decade long program-high for the USF women’s program, while marking the third time in a dozen years USF women’s basketball has hosted a crowd of over 3,000 for a home game. Last season, USF faced Tennessee on the Hilltop as 3,255 watched on. In the 1999-2000 season opener, USF played Stanford at War Memorial Gym in front of 3,212.

OFFENSE HEATS UP: San Francisco and its opponents scored a combined 175 points in the games with Rhode Island and Sacramento State. That’s just 47 more points than what the Dons scored in the first four games of the season. USF put up 87 points against Rhode Island November 27 as part of the Holiday-Inn Express Midtown Tournament in Albuquerque, just to be bettered by 88 points December 1 at Sacramento State. The 88 points is the most points for USF since the Dons defeated Santa Clara 88-73, Feb. 23, 2008. The program record for points in a game is 105, 101 when playing on the road.

DONS FALL JUST SHORT OF SCORING RECORDS: At Sacramento State, the Dons and the Hornets combined to scored 194 points, as USF fell 106-88. The 194 total points fell six points shy of the school record for combined points of 200. USF and BYU combined to score 200 points on Nov. 23, 1984 as the Dons fell 119-81. The 194 points marks the most points scored in regulation since the record scoring game. Against Colorado State in 2007, USF and the Rams combined to score 197 points, but in three overtime periods, as CSU prevailed 101-96. In addition the 88 points scored in the loss Wednesday, marked the most points scored in a loss since San Francisco fell to US International, 93-91, during the 1985-86 season.

2010-11 VIRTUAL MEDIA GUIDE RELEASED: The University of San Francisco women’s basketball team is proud to unveil the 2010-11 USF Women’s Basketball Virtual Media Guide. The guide, which features videos and slide shows, can be accessed at USFDons.com or by visiting the following link: http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/8cf2aeee#/8cf2aeee/1.

JENNIFER AZZI ERA: This season marks the beginning of a new era on the Hilltop, as women’s basketball legend Jennifer Azzi begins her ap-pointment as head coach. Azzi, who was named to the helm of the program in April, brings an unprecedented wealth of basketball experience to the program. The 2009 Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee played five seasons in the WNBA, was a founding member of the American Basketball League (ABL), played overseas and enjoyed an All-American collegiate career at Stanford. Internationally, Azzi was a member of the USA Basketball Senior National Team from 1990-91 and 1993-98. A key member of the United States gold medal-winning 1996 Olympic Team that concluded a perfect 60-0 season with an 8-0 record during the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Azzi played on 13 USA National Teams, compiling a mark of 114-14. She also medaled three times at the World Championships, claiming gold in 1998 and 1990, while earning a bronze in 1994.

GAME #21/WCC #7 RECAP • USF 66, PEPPERDINE 46DONS ROLL OVER WAVES IN FIRST WCC VICTORY

(San Francisco) - As the final second ticked off the clock, first-time starter Ashley Boggs held the ball as she was mobbed by her teammates, celebrating their first win of the West Coast Conference season, 66-46 over Pepperdine.

With a powerful Waves squad (13-8, 4-3 WCC) coming to War Memorial Gym, the Dons (4-17, 1-6 WCC) were staring a winless first half of their WCC schedule in the face. The Dons had lost all six of their WCC games going into Saturday’s afternoon showdown with the Waves, but head coach Jennifer Azzi and her team had some surprises in store.

USF set the tone early that they would out-work the Waves. After sprinting out to a 10-0 lead in the first 3:15, thanks in part to Pepperdine missing their first seven shots, the Dons kept the pressure on and stretched the lead to as many as 15 in the first half.

USF’s quick lead forced Pepperdine out beyond the 3-point line in order to get back into the game, but they were only able to hit 3 of their 15 first-half shots from long range. It wasn’t much better from inside the arc. USF’s hustling defense and quick hands held Pepperdine to just 5-of-20 from inside of the 3-point line in the first half.

Pepperdine’s full court press caused problems for the Dons throughout the game, especially after they ratcheted up their intensity after halftime. But they were only able to set up that great defense after made shots, but they simply didn’t make enough shots. The Dons held the Waves to an icy 16-of-74 (21.6%) from the field for the game, and only 5-of-31 (16.1%) from behind the arc.

Pepperdine made one good run at the Dons in the second half, putting together a 9-0 run to put a scare into the home fans. But Kelly Jo Mullaney responded to the run by coolly knocking down a pull-up jumper in transition and then burying a 3-pointer on the next possession. The Dons then added two more consecutive buckets to stretch the lead all the way back to 15.

USF continued to struggle with the Pepperdine full-court press for the remainder of the game, but with the Waves resigned to shooting 3-pointers for the final 10 minutes, and only making 12.5% of them in the second half, the Dons won it going away, leading by as much as 22 in the final moments.

The Dons shot well from the field, knocking down 22-of-50 shots (44.0%) and were led by junior guard Vania Singleterry with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and also grabbed 8 rebounds. Mullaney had a tremendous game, sharing the ball-handling duties with Rheina Ale against that tight press defense.

Mullaney wound up with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Ale scored 10 with 8 boards. Boggs turned in a solid game in her inaugural start, scoring 8 points and taking in 7 boards.

The win marked the first time since 2008 that San Francisco posted a victory over Pepperdine.

USF will look to build on this win as they take to the second half of their conference schedule.

“No matter what you can’t give up; you can’t quit. Anything can happen if you keep working hard,” Singleterry said excitedly after the game.

The Dons will look to keep the momentum going when they travel down the peninsula and play at Santa Clara next Saturday. The Broncos won the last matchup 69-50 at USF on January 8.
